- What is being a pilot like? Commercial airline pilots have loads of perks: an astonishing office view, an opportunity to see the planet from the altitude of 35,000 ft, everyone's respect, and admiration. But there are some seemingly innocent things pilots can't enjoy while flying a plane.
Did you know, for example, that pilots rarely know who they're going to fly with until they take their place in the cockpit? Or that there's a "sterile cockpit rule" that prohibits pilots from doing anything but controlling the plane until it climbs to a higher altitude? Or that most commercial airline pilots can only wear a mustache at the most? Intrigued? So here’s the full list.

From an airline pilot & aviation professor (me): I knew you would get the very first thing wrong. The O2 mask has nothing to do with a beard since about the 1970’s. Our mask seal just fine with a beard. As for drinks, we have all the drinks on the flight deck- even an open cup of coffee. Third, we can pick our other pilot sometimes (buddy bidding). And we can refuse to fly with another pilot. You have the 2 person thing correct, but flight attendants are not “cockpit crew,” they are flight crew. Cabin crew CAN accept tips. Also, we do get free flights- so does our family/spouse/kids. And some airlines give us buddy passes to give to a certain number of friends each year.

As a easyjet pilot,you can listen to music as long as you are cruise altitude and at non crucial stages of the flight
That sounds to be a myth, as by the faa alone it's not allowed. Airlines aren't allowed to go over the faa

@@juordenjenesis pilots are actually allowed to listen to music, as long as they can hear calls from the radio and it won't disrupt how they fly. SOME airlines might not allow this, but generally it's allowed.

My mother was a flight attendant and got in a crash but managed to survive and got rescued until i ot sick so now she stoped working and went to school sometimes on a train and she buys stuff for us after at school that is why i love her

I remember when I was young, I was an insanely annoying child. My mum and brother were asleep and I was really hungry. I was upset and sat there pouting. A flight attendant saw this and asked me what was wrong. I told him I was hungry and he told me to wait there. Not like I was going anywhere. When he returned he gave me a muffin. It was tasty and he was nice.

For many years, I worked for Continental as a ramp agent and an operations agent. Sometimes when a flight crew is inbound and will be turning to go back out; the pilots would ask us if we could pick up an order from the airport McDonald's for the entire flight crew/ flight attendants.
Truly happy to know such deep facts. Hats off to the crew attendants.
Both of my parents are flight attendants and they, as well as all crew members, are 100% allowed to bring things through TSA checkpoints that regular passengers cannot. Like liquids, big electronics without taking them out, etc. half of these things listed are false lol

A pilot here: No more than 8/9 flying hours.. duty hours 12/13 respectively. And we can refuse partners cuz this is affecting safety. So if there is a dispute.. we can refuse. This video is better than your previous ones.. less mistakes.. the ones before had bad information and wrong.

2:05 there’s an aircraft radio transceiver onboard the aircraft. So Pilots can communicate with other pilots and airport traffic tower control and also listening to Weather Radio Advisory from the airports. I also listened to Airport Weather advisory from Radio transistor built in Air Band (ELPA ER-C57WR, TECSUN PL-660, RETEKESS TR105, etc..)

I am a former flight attendant from a major US airline. According to this video, I'd like to know when the "2 people in the cockpit" rule was put into place? In all my years with the airline have I ever heard or seen this done.
Oh yea..two people must a,always be in the flight deck at al times..my husband is a pilot here in Nigeria flying the B777.

Great video. But quick correction about the electronics. All is based major airlines and most us based minor (regional and budget) airlines issue all their pilots an iPad to complete various tasks including secondary navigation system and checklists. Airlines refer to these as “electronic flight bags”. Also people can be in the cockpit. This is only probibited once the engines have started, and once the engines have stopped.

Sherwooden Especially the no electronics rule is TOTAL non sense infact its the exact opposite, around 80% of the vital information pilot use on a daily basis is stored on devices including critical flight charts, SID charts, STAR charts, ILS Charts, Aerodome charts, noise and general info chart are all stored on small laptops or tablets.

That was very informative! There were some rules I hadn't known. All lf the rules make sense, of course, I just hadn' thought of some of them. While I have always had great respect from everyone working on a plain, my respect has increased thants to this video.

5:31 is not just practiced by flight attendants. It started from the F & B industry. You can't eat or drink in front of customers. Any eating or drinking you must hide or go to the back to do so.
7:40 if you are friends with the owner of the airline then yes, you may even get yourself a free first class seat.

I was on a red eye maybe 15 years ago and hung out in the galley while the flight attendant made coffee. Then sat and chatted while sitting tn the flight attendants' seats. Best time flying I had ever had. Maybe because I was the only passenger on the plane. A very unusual experience. I had a grand time..

there is something called rule-breaking
pilots can have water in the flight deck they need to keep hydrated in that hot room wrong they can read books and there can be only on in the cockpit so they can go to the toilet or go to the rest room plus they actually might need to run from the tower to send them back out
