Pretty Chestnut Weed Pot - Wood Turning

- I thought it was time to turn something without any sign of bark on it. This American Chestnut piece seemed to be just the ticket. It's a very classic shape for a weed pot, nothing special about it except for the very subtle yet beautiful grain and color. Finished with shellac and Acks abrasive paste and polish.

Howdy, Phil! Nice vase! And, guess what? There's backstory about that chestnut wood. (no, Dave, really?😮)
Where we used to live, there are several very old, gnarly, massive-- and well-known! --American chestnut trees growing close by. There are also a lot of industrious, hungry squirrels. One of the little characters buried a stash at the base of the neighbors' brick fireplace chimney. One of his nuts sprouted. By the time anyone noticed, it was big enough to start causing problems with the brickwork. They asked me to cut it down and had their yard guy dig out the root. The trunk was about 6" diameter.
It was a real pleasure watching you turn that lovely weed pot.
Great story, Dave! I love your backstories! I also love this Chestnut, thank you again, my friend! 😄
Thanks for sharing it with Phil. Chestnut is hard to come by these days. Even more so on this coast!
Very nice clean and pretty vase. Not everything you turn has to have a lot of bark on it. 😜 You might get to be a spindle turner yet! P.S. was just given a wood steady rest. Would offer to trade, but I know you won’t!
@@valeriehenschel1590 There are quite a number all over the greater Portland area. Some, like the ones mentioned, are likely 100 years old and 5-6' diameter at the base. The tree this one's nut came from is one of 3 on SE Stark St, just west of Mt. Tabor, if you're ever in that area. Right across from Portland Nursery. Can't miss 'em if you know what to look for.
@@valeriehenschel1590 Haha, not a chance!
Marvelous art Phil. Watched this without sound so as not wake anyone up. You would be surprised how pleasant seeing this peace evolve.
😄
“Simple is elegant” is a phrase my mother in law uses when she talks about how women should dress.
The same holds true here, I think. Beautiful weed pot, Phil! Well done.
Thank you, Scott! And I agree with your mother in law! 😃
Another beautiful turning with nice grain and lovely complimentary shape ❤
Thank you, Denise! 😄
This is a nice vase. I was surprised how thin chestnut bark is. The finish is beautiful. It shows off the grain of the wood. This is a fun turning. I like it!
Thanks for the show
Joel
Thank you, Joel! 😄
You are the King of the shear scrape Phil. Fantastic finish given all that grain tearing. Greetings from Scotland. 🏺
Thanks, Al! 😄
Well I've never heard of a "weed pot". I do love the vase you turned. Beautiful wood. Have a great weekend. 🥰
Thank you, Mary! 😄
Thank goodness you removed that rib from below the neck of the vase, so much more elegant in its final form.
Totally agree, Margaret! 😄
❤❤Oh Sweet Lord Uncle Phil!!! That is truly beautiful🎉🎉 What a great job.. as usual. So good to see you on tonight. Please stay safe.. Ron & Patty
Thank you kindly, you two! 😄
That's one beautiful weed pot. The colors are gorgeous. Yes the wood has a blue shade in it.
Yay! Thank you, Judith! 😄
Very nice. Another piece of wood talked you into a beautiful end result. I love the way you put a piece of wood on the lathe then let it speak to you. Who wouldn’t love a weed pot like that.
Thank you, Douglas! 😄
Very pretty vase Phil. Thanks for making it clean and simple. It's a pretty wood which I've never seen turned. We can thank that squirrel as well. 😉
Yeah, cool story about the squirrel! 😄
April 6th 2023 ___ So pretty, Phil. I'd never heard the name 'weedpot'. Learn something new every day. ...I prefer cold to heat of summer, but, we had freezing rain here. Lots of tree branches came down. Sounds of chainsaws. 🌲🌳
I'm with you on the temperature! 😄
Interesting colours and grain patterns almost looks ceramic, well Phil another spindle turning good to see you mixing it up. 😁
Glad you like it, Lewis, thanks! 😄
That is a beautiful vase Phil ,the grain does enough not to out do any flowers you put in it,but if you stood it alone it has enough to catch your eye , well done and thank you from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you very much, Roger! 😄
That's beautiful Phil!!!
Happy turning to you Phil and your followers!!!👍
Thank you, Jon! 😄
Oh my goodness…when you said weed pot, my mind went somewhere else 😂
Lovely work as always!
You were not the only one, 🤣🤣🤣
Definitely not the only one!😊
I’m glad someone spoke up, cause I was wondering too.
Yep 😂 I went there also...lol 😆
LOL!
Beautiful vase, Phil. Pretty wood for sure. 😊😊😊
Thank you! 😄
Another great turning I wait every Thursday for your next piece of art
I appreciate that, Ray! 😄
Another beautiful work of art always enjoy watching you take a piece of wood and turning it into a piece of beauty. Thank you.
Thank you very much, Virginia! 😄
Always a pleasure Phil beautiful vase. It turned a little colder here too. Keep them turning.😊
Dang, just when we thought it was Spring, George! 😄
That chestnut is some very pretty wood. I really like the shape you turned it. Great work.
Thank you, Dale! 😄 Cheers!
Well you've done it again !! Turned a piece of plane piece of wood into a lovely of art ,I wasn't expecting it to turn out like that amazing . I love wood !!!!!!!!
Me too, Dave! 😄
Awesome! Super! Super Awesome Phil! I can’t wait to see what you reveal in each piece you turn! Sharing!
I really appreciate that, Mike, thank you! 😄
Nice to see you do something a bit different for you, Phil! Very simple design but but simple is beautiful when executed wonderfully as you have just shown. Great job!
Glad you like it, Tom, thank you! 😊
What I think about it Phil, is it’s very nice! It shows how broad your talent is! Thank you!
Wow, thank you, Kelly! 😄
I love this little weed pot. The grain is beautiful.
It is, thanks, Jean! 😄
beautiful vase phil , love the wood grain and the shape .simple but elegant .
😄
Nice work Phill, let's hope the chestnut makes a comeback.
Yes! 😄
That’s cool looking Phil, it’s beautiful.👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Love the weed pot. I have a Chinese friend that makes some of the most Beautiful silk flowers , butterflies and birds I have ever seen!
Turn a weed pot for them, Sam! 😄
Wish I could or maybe I could get you to make one!
When I first saw you were going to make a "Weed Pot", I thought, Yes siree bob!, I'm going to make me one of them! I could just imagine it sitting there with a nicely turned, snug fitting top, on the table near my favourite seat in the lounge room, that carefully polished Red Gum , (that's a really hard eucalyptus wood we have around here), just glowing in the subdued light, holding quite a few grams of some really great dope my friend grows, a lot of papers, and a cigarette lighter, I could almost see it in front of me! Then my whole world came crashing down, I realised your idea of a "weed pot" was different to my idea of a "weed pot", I've dried my tears since, I guess my weed will just have to continue being kept in Grandma's old tea canister on top of the refrigerator! Sweet dreams.
Haha, judging by the comments, Eddie, lots of people felt the same way! 😄
You got a lovely finish on that one, Phil! Looks real nice.
😄
Phil as always the finished product is great. You were the first wood turner that I started watching. I feel like it’s a family show. For the last 6 months I have not been able to get back into my shop for health reasons. Things are getting better but I live my fantasy thru watching your videos. Great job, see you in a week.
I hope you are able to return to your shop even better than before and very soon, Ronnie! Thank you! 😄
Thank you Phil, I half expected the piece of wood to get the Anderson treatment, turned at 90 degrees to the grain and made into a natural edge winged bowl. You got me lol.
Haha, oh, I thought about it, John! 😄
Beautiful Phil, looks like it came from Ancient Greece! 😊
Cool, thanks! 😄
Absolutely beautiful weed pot and awesome job Mr. Phil.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Donald! 😄
Very nice Phil; that finished up beautifully and I really like the shape you gave it. It's not your standard fare, but departing from what one normally does is good every once in a while. Weed pots are fun to turn.
Yes they are, thanks, Mark! 😄
Simple is beautiful...the wood speaks for itself!
Yes! 😄
That is certainly a beautiful classic shape, from a lovely piece of wood. Also, most people I know keep their weed in baggies. The wooden vase is a very attractive alternative.
LOL! 😄
I was surprised. Did not expect it to turn out as pretty as it did.
I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😄
Excellent job Phil!!! With that beautiful grain it didn't need an elaborate shape.
There ya go, Dana! 😄
Lovely and very glad you clarified " weed pot"
😄
It is nice to see the master do something simple Thanks Phill .Terry downunder
Thanks, Terry! 😄
I do not think I have ever seen you use that massive ruffing gauge before. Phil you say your not a spindle turner but you seem to be doing a fine job of it. Looks like Chestnut turns nicely & has an interesting grain that I am not use to with a nice shiny finish. Until next time Phil...TM
I've used it before but, yeah, it's kind of rare. Also kinda fun for a change! Did you figure out that optical illusion I sent you, Tuffy? 😄
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop It was very well done and I would guess that the optical splice would be on the top right? So if it rotated the image would separate at that point? Confuse-a-Tuffy ... (ah, so if I am wrong I can just blame it on "old age". I love being allowed to finely have an excuse now, ha. 🤩..... TM
@@tuffymartinez I could not figure it out at all and I studied it off and on for an hour! 😄
Howdy Phil. I think this is a very beautiful 'weed pot' well suited to dry or artificial flowers. As I've said before, you're not a bad spindle turner, for a non-spindle turner. Seriously, it is nice to break out of our comfort zone from time to time & you do spindle turn very well. Nice shape, brilliant finish & a joy to watch it develop the way it did. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
It's just that I keep forgetting my next step cause I'm not used to spindle turning. I guess if I keep at it I'll remember but I still prefer bowl turning. Thank you, Don! 😄
Very nice vase. I always learn something from your videos.
Thank you, Russell! 😄
Wishing you well on this Phil Thursday. Yet another nice project, even if it isn't a proper pot.
😄
This video has great lighting for showing why you need to wear a dust mask. The light really caught how much is produced. Beautiful vase even without the (weed). Turned very well for being dried for 4 years.
It did turn much easier than I thought it might, Jeff! 😄
Lovely weed pot and it will look great filled with some nice flowers, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
It does, Al, thanks! 😄
That's pretty. Love the grain and graceful form.
Thank you, Dave! 😄
Hi Phil As I said before, just found your channel and have been going through your videos when I came across your video "Why did you start a You Tube channel" So
sorry for your loss although very belated. Guess we are brothers in more than woodworking having both lost our wives. I can see where a lot of your heart and love
goes now. It shows in every piece of wood you give new life. Keep making shavings and fantastic works of art. Bob
Thank you, Bob. 😄
Really nice vase Phil! The grain on that is very purdy! Thx and take care.
😄
Glad you clarified the term weed pot, that term could mean something completely different up in the Northwest 😊
😄
Great Piece, Phil! Your spindle turnings are fun to watch!
Glad you like them! 😄
Great turning, Phil. Very pretty weed pot, buddy!
Happy turning,
…..Gord
Thank you, Gord! 😄
Nice one. I often wondered about the difference between a vase and weed pot so thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful, Michael, thank you! 😄
Love the shape and grain colour Phil! I have a few pieces of walnut branches that I was looking for ideas to turn and that’s one for sure. I really like it! Cheers, Rick
Go for it! Thanks, Rick! 😄
A classic. I don't think there's anything you can't turn Phil. Your touch with the gouge, like around the top, makes me very envious. Wish I had that finesse.
I've never turned chestnut before and it appeared to be a very open grain wood so I am really amazed at the finish you got on there.
And it looks like you might be a decent flower arranger as well.
Keep on keeping on my friend.
It is an open grained wood, Bob but that makes it easy to sand and that is what accounts for the great finish I was able to get. As for flower arranging, well, sometimes ya get lucky! 😄
Beautiful coloring. I like the honey look.
Thanks so much 😊
Your right! That is very beautiful. Good choice on the flowers also.
Thank you! 😄
Beautiful! Love the shape and the grain in this piece! My mom and I both love watching your videos. Thank you for being such a pleasure to watch.
I love that you and your mom watch together, Yvonne, thank you! 😄
Glad you explained the weed a pot because I had no clue but sometimes simple that pretty is all you ever want and that is pretty thank you
Thank you, Lynda! 😄
Very nice Phil. Like always a very enjoyable video. I hope you are feeling good. Thank you for sharing. I hope to see you next week
I am! Thanks, Albert! 😄
The Chestnut wood and the finish looks really amazing. Interesting name of the piece "weed pot" . Well enjoy it....LOL
😄
Thank you Dave, thank you Phil. I think it's sweet!
Glad you like it! 😄
Beautiful peace of art, love color and design ❤
😄
Nice change of pace with some pretty grain! Thanks for sharing. Hope all is well!
Thanks, you too, Brenda! 😄
I like the explanations about your work and tools. Beautiful pot.
I'm glad, thank you! 😄
It turned out really nice. One more thing to add to my list of things to make.
Get to it, it ain't gonna make itself, Rick! 😄
Hi Phil! I really like this vase. Simple, but beautiful! I thought you were going to put a glass insert in it for fresh flowers. 😄 I guessed wrong this time. 😂 Sorry I missed last week, health appointments almost everyday. 🙄 Gaaah!, 😖 Today, 4/7/23, are Sabine and Mando’s 3rd birthday! They are my cats. Right now Sabine is sleeping on my legs. Typical. I hope you have a spectacular week and I’ll see you next week, I hope! Have a wonderful Easter! Hugs to you my friend! 💫✨ Roma 🐘 🌲💚🌳🦅
I always forget the inserts, Roma, and I have a LOT of them in different sizes! Dang it! Happy Birthday to the feline twins! Happy Easter hugs to you, too! 😄
You did make all my weeds and twigs in my area very proud that they get to be displayed in this very Beautiful Tig Pot. I love to turn a Twig Pot it allows me to use me creativity. I just grab an old 4x4 post ( bug eaten or not. gate post decayed or not , fire wood or any FOG wood that will work. One suggestion that looked good to me, is to make the neck opening a little steeper than it is then add your artistic ring about an inch down. I even add burnt rings for appearance. But this is just a mere sugesstion, You are the Master. Thanks for sharing this with the world. KEEP ON TURNING
Yes, they are fun and you can use just about anything! 😊
Morning Phil,
That is a lovely looking weed pot with a very interesting grain pattern on it.
I like the way you disguised the forstner bit dimple as well.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw

If you can't hide it, accentuate it! LOL! Good to see you this morning, Huw! 😄
Simple and elegant! That turned out quite nice!
Thank you, Joseph! 😄
Oh how lucky you are to be working with American Chestnut 🌰. Where I live here in central Pa I can only look at pictures of how massive those trees used to be in our area at our local library. Happy turning my friend ☺️ .
Yeah, mine growing up were quite large, too, Edward! 😄
As ever Phil you bring the colours of the natural wood out wonderfully ❤
I always finish watching wanting to feel the finished item. Thank you
I wish you could, Laura! 😄
Thank You Phil....(Am I first?....ha)....Thank You Dave.... TM
The famous Tuffy Marginez! ❤️
Tuffy, as always, you're welcome.
This makes up for all those times you are late, Tuffy! 😄
@@mandyray23 "famous"???...OH-MY-GOSH...4 sending Phil wood???, HA....(Phil is the famous one 4 sure...but thank u Mandy)....TM
Pretty little weed pot. 🥰💕
Thanks, Vickie! 😄
I have to tell you, I had a huge giggle the first time you said 'weed pot'. It just tickled my funny bone when you said it because although I knew what you meant, it just kept making me think of it as a place a hippie would hide his 'weed' stash! Lololol
It did turn out to be a very beautiful vase, the wood grain and colors really made it stand out. Its a beautiful piece of art!
Thanks Phil!⚱️
You are not the only one giggling, Texana! 😄
A very beautiful wed pot Phil.
😄
Another great creation, I think you might be getting to like this spindle turning lark 😊
Not really, Mark! LOL!
Lovely piece. You should do more spindle turning - you are good at it!
😄
That turned out really nice, Phil!
Thanks, Billy! 😄
Well I like it. You should make more of them. I really love the colors.

Phil you are so humble. This is such a cool piece. My wife loved it. Now she wants me to make her one or two I see the writing on the wall. Haha. Don’t get me wrong most of my bowls end up on her shelf.
