When I first saw you were going to make a "Weed Pot", I thought, Yes siree bob!, I'm going to make me one of them! I could just imagine it sitting there with a nicely turned, snug fitting top, on the table near my favourite seat in the lounge room, that carefully polished Red Gum , (that's a really hard eucalyptus wood we have around here), just glowing in the subdued light, holding quite a few grams of some really great dope my friend grows, a lot of papers, and a cigarette lighter, I could almost see it in front of me! Then my whole world came crashing down, I realised your idea of a "weed pot" was different to my idea of a "weed pot", I've dried my tears since, I guess my weed will just have to continue being kept in Grandma's old tea canister on top of the refrigerator! Sweet dreams.

Howdy, Phil! Nice vase! And, guess what? There's backstory about that chestnut wood. (no, Dave, really?😮)
Where we used to live, there are several very old, gnarly, massive-- and well-known! --American chestnut trees growing close by. There are also a lot of industrious, hungry squirrels. One of the little characters buried a stash at the base of the neighbors' brick fireplace chimney. One of his nuts sprouted. By the time anyone noticed, it was big enough to start causing problems with the brickwork. They asked me to cut it down and had their yard guy dig out the root. The trunk was about 6" diameter.
It was a real pleasure watching you turn that lovely weed pot.

Very nice clean and pretty vase. Not everything you turn has to have a lot of bark on it. 😜 You might get to be a spindle turner yet! P.S. was just given a wood steady rest. Would offer to trade, but I know you won’t!

@@valeriehenschel1590 There are quite a number all over the greater Portland area. Some, like the ones mentioned, are likely 100 years old and 5-6' diameter at the base. The tree this one's nut came from is one of 3 on SE Stark St, just west of Mt. Tabor, if you're ever in that area. Right across from Portland Nursery. Can't miss 'em if you know what to look for.

Today I finished painting the back door and trim with a paint that is supposed to be mold resistant, rot, fungus and mildew resistant, with primer included and one coat technology. However, it took three coats of the paint to get a nice complete white covering. Why do I have the feeling that I'll be painting the door and trim again in five or six years. Phil, if you would like, I'll send you the rest of this most wonderful and amazing paint I have for you to paint the weed vase a lovely white. Maybe if I shellac over the white paint on the door and trim?

Very nice. I have 3 older chestnut trees but I think they are Chinese chestnut trees. I have cut a low laying branch and have turned some bud vases from them. So nice to work with, it turns very well. Your vase turned out beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
