Bradford pear. This was the base cut-off of a sucker branch which grew tight to the main trunk, so not truly a crotch piece. It came down in an ice storm several years ago and was at the curb, free to take. I sent it to Phil because I knew there was something gorgeous and unique in it, but I couldn't see it. @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I've been watching videos for months and testing different tools. I finally got a sharpening jig and it's great. So I had some issues with the transition from bottom to the side of the bowl...not sure what happened.
It might have something to do with the grind of your gouge. My bowl gouges have a 60° bevel. That turn is always a problem but a different grind might help.

Okay Phil, we now all know that it is Bradford Pear wood but I love your description of 'FOG Wood', it sits beautifully. Back to the piece, it is an absolutely delightful piece of Woodturning ART, & that, as you know, comes from a former Senior Master of Art here in South Australia. There are times when things don't seem to be going in the right, planned direction but if you follow your 'true gut', as you are always able to do, you can often come up with a possibly better result than may have been originally planned. Routine blood test showed my red blood cell count to be 65 when for a male it should be 135-150 & I could have a fatal heart attack. Went in for an overnight transfusion of 2 units of red blood cells & stayed for 4 days, finished up having 4 units of red blood cells & they could still only get my count up to 98 so they sent me home. Ah well, 'chin up' they say. Cheers, Don

Phil my friend, I think just about every turner has said “we’ll, I should probably quit while I’m ahead”, just to turn the lathe back on to see if they can push the envelope a little. Lol.
Hmmm…. Perhaps a remount to add a drill hole through the center, and a drill press hole in the tenon would allow you to mount clock parts. Who says a clock can not have curved hands riding over the bowl? Then you could do the vertical mount you were wanting!!! You just did not realize you were turning a clock, not a bowl. LOL!!! (well, maybe not. Just a possible alternative). Met another one of your subscribers, and we had a good visit.

You sure brought out the best of that FOG wood Phil . I was on pins and needles watching you go down that bowl . That was a great save using the tenon .
