Who said Bob Dylan could not sing .. I love his mature voice as much as his younger one
I love his voice. By that I mean what comes out in a produced studio recording. It's Dylan live (especially arena live) where the voice sometimes sounds like a swarm of hornets. It's my opinion. I'm sure many will disagree.
This song on repeat driving endlessly through Georgia in the middle of the night, just trying to get home to Florida. Every time I hear it, I go back there. In the car alone, exhausted, freezing cold and sick. The moon shining through the pines along the highway... Breaks my heart.

Modern Times has rightfully become more acclaimed as it has aged. Expectations were quite low when Time out of Mind came out which added to its critical and commercial success (it's a great album obviously). Song for song it is my favorite album of 21st century Dylan.

This is a murder ballad, and not surprising since Dylan has shown a lifelong love for murder ballads dating back to his cover of Clarence Ashley’s 1929 murder ballad “Little Sadie” which Dylan did a fantastic cover of for his 1970 album “Self Portrait”. The lyrics in a number of verses here indirectly point to this as a love ballad with “darker implications” … an “oblique” murder ballad not nearly as straightforward as “Little Sadie”. Great song.
Your roots and your song are amazing rooted in pain of the farm love land or your culture. Cut down a tree it's with help you remember what was saved. You are alive. You survive I stand up for any that's live to fight an other day because one day's you will look back and say I grow a little more than the day before.

I always thought this album was the weakest in his 21st century output (Christmas and standards albums excluded), but after finally listening to it again last week, my opinion's changed completely. This album is fantastic! I think the reason I was initially unfavourable toward it was because it sounds quite different to the albums before and after. Love and Theft is Dylan as the old Americana folkie, reflecting on the crazy world as it flies by him. Together Through Life is a sometimes bluesy, sometimes polka, and sometimes even Tejano that makes you feel like you're in some kind of smoke-filled hotel bar in south Texas. But Modern Times, I've realised recently, is Bob acknowledging the country and western roots he'd been getting away from for the previous decade or two. You can hear the likes of George Jones, Tom T Hall, Hank Williams Sr, and even guys like Townes van Zandt and Steve Earle on this album, in fact a lot of people think "Thunder on the Mountain" is some kind of tribute to Chuck Berry and Eddie Cochran, but to me it sounds like something you'd find on the At Folsom Prison album by Johnny Cash, somewhere between "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Cocaine Blues". There's a bounce and liveliness to it, but don't mistake for a tune you can dance to :)
For me a lot of songs on this album sound like JJ Cale... which makes sense, since JJ Cale was an excellent studio engineer and he mixed his songs himself with his own equipment.
Especially listen to the blues songs on this album, if you're a JJ Cale fan - you will hear those similarities.
Love and Theft and Modern Times are 2 of my favorite late releases - Temptest and his latest, Rough and Rowdy Album are right up there but still digesting these 2

This album is so full of Biblical references it makes your head spin. Don't forget is a lover of JAH. His Hero is found profoundly in this album.

Not to many sweets sticks stuff. Get meal plan but they sacked me for smoking we where allowed to then I join thier team. Had my work review done and it I was told your ok. Addict need care. They need a work out. Yard. I not called them prisoners but they were referred by the courts to us. I did night care work. Cheers
