    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were danglin' from the vine
I was passin' by yon cool and crystal fountain
    Someone hit me from behind
    [Verse 2]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
Through this weary world of woe
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
No one on earth would ever know
    [Verse 3]
They say prayer has the power to help
    So pray from the mother
In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell
I'm a'tryin' to love my neighbor and do good unto others
But oh, mother, things ain't goin' well
    [Verse 4]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
I'll burn that bridge before you can cross
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
They'll be no mercy for ya' once you've lost
    [Verse 5]
Now I'm all worn down by weepin'
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry
If I catch my opponents ever sleepin'
I'll just slaughter them where they lie
    [Verse 6]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
Through the world mysterious and vague
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' a'through the cities of the plague
    [Verse 7]
Well, the whole world is filled with speculation
The whole wide world which people say is round
They will tear your mind away from contemplation
They will jump on your misfortune when you're down
    [Verse 8]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
    Eatin' hog-eyed grease in a hog-eyed town
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Someday you'll be glad to have me around
    [Verse 9]
They will crush you with wealth and power
Every wakin' moment you could crack
I'll make the most of one last extra hour
I'll avenge my father's death an' I'll step back
    [Verse 10]
    Ain't talkin', just walkin'
Hand me down my walkin' cane
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Got to get ya' out of my miserable brain
    [Verse 11]
All o' my loyal and much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that's been long abandoned
Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road
    [Verse 12]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
My mule is sick, my horse is blind
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Thinkin' ‘bout that gal I left behind
    [Verse 13]
Well, it's bright in the heavens and the wheels are flyin'
Fame and honor never seem to fade
The fire gone out but the light is never dyin'
Who says I can't get heavenly aid?
    [Verse 14]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
    Carryin' a dead man's shield
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
    A'walkin' a'with a toothache in my heel
    [Verse 15]
    The sufferin' is unending
Every nook and cranny has its tears
    I'm a'not playin', I'm not pretending
I'm not nursin' any superfluous fears
    [Verse 16]
    Ain't talkin', just a'walkin'
Walkin' ever since the other night
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
Walkin' ‘til I'ma clean outta sight
    [Verse 17]
As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, a hot summer lawn
"Excuse me, ma'am, I beg your pardon
There's no one here, the gardener is gone"
    [Verse 18]
    Ain't talkin', a'just a'walkin'
Up the road around the bend
    Heart burnin', still yearnin'
In the last outback, at the world's end

Hard to believe it was written in 2006. Dylan, after all these years, was still able to write a masterpiece. He never lost it, he still got it.

I swear there's no one that comes even close to Bob on good lyrics, it's like he's the only person that says those stuff, your anguish and deep yearning for wonder wanted you to say all along, and even the intonation is meaningful and so cool, as he says, oh my goodness! If someone knows more artists or even just songs with this kind of philosophical undertones, please, please share them.

I would have to Say John Prine of whom Dylan had high praise for also TVZ of whom Dylan loved and covered one of His tunes .

I am 77 and my husband is 79, and my experience of the past few years of rediscovering all my favorite songs from the 1960s thru 1980s is that a few have taken on new meaning. I was always a love song person and listening again a half century later just brings back nostalgic, happy memories, but a few songs have special new meaning. I have rediscovered "People Get Ready" sung by The Impressions. The words are especially meaningful as my husband and I face our own mortality and have faced the deaths of close family and friends. I enjoy looking up who wrote my favorite songs and the composers and singers' biographies. I was surprised that Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck wrote "People Get Ready" when the words are a Black Spiritual about every human's journey to the afterlife.

My advice to any young person is to put all the music you hear and don’t like, take it and put it on a playlist and as you get older and start going through tough times go back and listen to the same old songs and really listen to them and I guarantee you as you get older you won’t wanna listen to anything else. It’s not that you don’t like the music, you simply don’t understand it or relate to it. God bless you the reader.

The proper name for this is the "Tierce de Picardie". It was hugely common in minor-key music from the 16th to 18th centuries. Check out most of Bach's minor-key fugues. Paradoxically it often emphasises the feeling of sadness in the piece.

Such a deeply amazing song and Bob's voice just reverberates in the chest! This song gives me so much hope because it is doesn't get more real than this! But unlike it says I would never worry about slaying any enemy because I just need to stand in the armor of Ephesians 6 and trust that things come out alright at the end. King Saul went after David like a dog after a bone to kill him but when David came across Saul and all his army slumbering he could have slayed them all but he left it all up to God, Who's love and wisdom are unmatched and cannot be rivaled. This song makes me think of that and so much more! The feelings and thoughts in this song are so poetically honest! Thank you Bob Dylan! ❤ God Bless you always and in all ways! I pray for you every day brother! 🙌

What sticks out to me on this song is the line "the whole world is filled with speculation they will tear your mind away from contemplation". There seems to be a line in one of the Dylan songs for every situation in life we encounter. MASTERFUL. Even Buddha would have agreed with Bob on this one as he said that life is suffering.

    LYRICS:
As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine
I was passing by yon cool crystal fountain
    Someone hit me from behind
    Ain't talking, just walking
Through this weary world of woe
    Heart burning, still yearning
No one on earth would ever know
They say prayer has the power to heal
    So pray for me, mother
In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell
I am trying to love my neighbor and do good unto others
But oh, mother, things ain't going well
    Ain't talking, just walking
I'll burn that bridge before you can cross
    Heart burning, still yearning
There'll be no mercy for you once you've lost
Now I'm all worn down by weeping
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry
If I catch my opponents ever sleeping
I'll just slaughter them where they lie
    Ain't talking, just walking
Through the world mysterious and vague
    Heart burning, still yearning
Walking through the cities of the plague.
Well, the whole world is filled with speculation
The whole wide world which people say is round
They will tear your mind away from contemplation
They will jump on your misfortune when you're down
    Ain't talking, just walking
Eating hog eyed grease in a hog eyed town.
    Heart burning, still yearning
Some day you'll be glad to have me around.
They will crush you with wealth and power
Every waking moment you could crack
I'll make the most of one last extra hour
I'll revenge my father's death then I'll step back
    Ain't talking, just walking
Hand me down my walking cane.
    Heart burning, still yearning
Got to get you out of my miserable brain.
All my loyal and my much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that's been long abandoned
Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road
    Ain't talking, just walking
My mule is sick, my horse is blind.
    Heart burning, still yearning
Thinking about that girl I left behind.
Well, it's bright in the heavens and the wheels are flying
Fame and honor never seem to fade
The fire gone out but the light is never dying
Who says I can't get heavenly aid?
    Ain't talking, just walking
    Carrying a dead man's shield
    Heart burning, still yearning
Walking with an ache in my heel
    The suffering is unending
Every nook and cranny has its tears
I'm not playing, I'm not pretending
I'm not nursing any superfluous fears
    Ain't talking, just walking
Walking ever since the other night.
    Heart burning, still yearning
Walking until I'm clean out of sight.
As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, a hot summer lawn
Excuse me, ma'am, I beg your pardon
There's no one here, the gardener is gone
    Ain't talking, just walking
Up the road, around the bend.
    Heart burning, still yearning
In the last outback at the world's end.

I assume from its lyrics that this dark song is about unrequited 'love', if something so sublime is possible to the multi-millionaire, drug-addled, hobo-prophet of nihilism, Robert Zimmerman. His loyal fans seldom question any of his puerile assumptions about life. Instead, they have made him into one of the richest men in America.

    • @edwardmorris3453
      @edwardmorris3453 4 месяца назад +1

I am interested in your comment and would like for you to expand on it. What, in the lyrics, makes you think it's about unrequited 'love'? Why the quote marks when the prodosis sufficiently performs that function? What are some examples of nihilism in his works? What are some of his puerile assumptions about life? I find your last sentence troubling. If Bob Dylan's fans "made" him a rich man, then people "made" Henry Ford rich by buying his cars, they made Stephen King rich by buying his books, Steven Spielberg rich by going to his movies, that shriveled turd that made Facebook because they use Facebook and so on.
There's a passage in The Fountainhead where Howard Roark addresses the point you make, which is one of human agency. Your premise is that a man's capacity to survive is hostage to a collective will. I forget what Roark said, exactly, but the gist was that as long as he had something of value to offer SOME one, he was independent of the will of ANY one. If I were less lazy, I'd dig up the passage.
Speaking of puerility, what is your age? There's something about your phrase-turning that sounds like something a very young person would come up with. Except for the gripe against making money, I might have written something like you did, when I was in my early twenties. I might even have written something as arrogant as "His loyal fans seldom question..." as if I knew all about his "loyal fans".
I'm getting a "young conservative" vibe. Like, you recently read Closing of the American Mind. One thing I do like about your comment is that you hold love highly enough to call it "so sublime". An older person wouldn't feel it necessary to wave an ideal like a flag. Yeah, do you watch Michael Knowles or Matty Matt?
Anyway, I would genuinely like to hear your arguments fleshed out, viz. Dylan.
