COVID-19's impact on the globe can’t be understated, and while the vaccine has dramatically reduced the spread of the virus in nations that are lucky enough to have access, the global toll on our mental health, vaccinated or not, will be felt for years to come. To better understand the ramifications of the global pandemic on the hearts and minds of humans everywhere, I sat down with two experts, Dr. Ali Mattu of The Psych Show here on RUclips, and Dr. Tarun Dua, the head of Brain Health for the WHO.

My best wishes to your daughter and may she be fairing as well as she can be. I hope the change in her study methods and grades have not negatively affected her confidence or sense of self. If you may, please understand/affirm her her grades do not define her, her ability to complete tasks or remain productive do not determine her worth. Struggling in the present circumstances is absolutely valid. Encourage her to treat herself with kindness and to see beyond her books. School exists now, but it does not define her forever. Maintaining a healthy mindset and sense of self will lead to a positive future far more than maintaining school grades ever will.

I've been targeting anxiety posts throughout the internet, urging them to work on their physique. I suffered SEVERE anxiety for the last decade or so, and I got everything fixed by working on my body and posture. Anxiety often comes from lack of oxygen or shortness of breath (even if you don't feel you have those), because your bad posture is not allowing your lungs to inflate and get oxygen to your brain, which causes the sensation of constant danger. Work on that. I GUARANTEE you'll fix it. Of course, the "story" you tell yourself in your mind determines the outcome. Have a great life sir.

It’s tricky because most are really booked out or not accepting new patients in my area at least, but I think that would be the best place to start so you can hopefully get some help. I’d recommend just emailing 6+ people at a time for the best chances of finding someone in a reasonable time.

I was already well on the road to struggling with the recurrent symptoms of childhood trauma when Covid hit. Trauma on top of trauma. Meanwhile, the mechanisms that were supposed to be there to help me instead abandoned me. The worst of it is that we as a society have become so desensitized to the nature and impact of trauma, falsely assuming that trauma only exists in violence, catastrophe, life-threatening adversity. We too quickly overlook the person who suffered shame and exclusion as a child, or bullying, or have disengaged parents.
We forget that the children we’re always so quick to “save” yesterday have become adults today, but we’re still talking about saving the children. Why? Because children can’t tell you if what you’re doing is actually working or if your efforts to capitalize on their misery, while making you rich, probably isn’t doing anything to really solve the problem.

It’s stupid common that people try to fit others into this box and do things their way without caring that said methods may actually make things worse for someone else. Quoting Marcus Aurelius isn't exactly hitting the nail on the head. He may have been viewed as the wisest and intellectual of all Roman emperors; except his belief in Stoicism (a philosophy that emphasized fate, reason, and self-restraint) leaves one being skeptical of his mental health. Someone with a mental illness does NOT have "power over their minds" to make things all nice, warm, and cozy by being philosophical.

I'm in that moment RIGHT NOW!!! That struggling and growth period is exactly what I'm going through now!!! One month ago I realized that I was no longer safe in the situation I was living in. It was very hard to express that I needed help... It is way better for me now that I'm "safe" and no longer living in that environment. With that said; I still occasionally struggle with different aspects of the aftermath of the situation. I don't blame myself for the situation but I do blame myself for the seemingly countless ripple effects that this has caused in my family and friends. It's a paradoxical dichotomy; a spaghetti plot of emotions that I would really like to never have to think about ever but can't move past it without working through it so these issues don't end up sneaking up on me in the future.
One last thing; that bit about "helping people in the way they want to be helped" is so accurate! I find venting (even if it's just to God) about things that are hard to deal with to be one of my best ways of getting through the emotions of the moment. I mean ya I can cry, eat ice cream and through a pitty party like the rest of them but in order for me to get through the emotions of the moment it's BEST to talk about it. Then later after I've cooled down if I want to reflect on it further I write in my "guided reflection" journal! That has been so helpful but also hurtful at the same time. You see the reason I prefer talking to someone about issues is because in my opinion if you simply write it down it gets the idea out but if you tell someone else about the issue (whatever it might be) they can help, encourage, uplift, hold accountable and check on you if anything else happens. But if you just wrote about these issues who would know to keep tabs on you and motivate you or help you in any way. I'm autistic and learn best hearing things though so maybe that has a part to play in the way I "decompress". I wish I can go back in time to August 7th when what happened on the 8th wouldn't have been a problem and things were okay again...
    Thanks for sharing this video!

@@HuffGLaDTem I'm sad to hear that :( It sounds like some other type of assistance maybe coupled with more long-term traditional therapy (with a therapist you feel comfortable with) could help, like for example support groups? The others there aren't paid, and you'll meet people who can understand what you're also going through and feel less lonely, a sense of connection, and possibly gain help in dealing with your own feelings through talking with each other. Support is one of the first most important things for our mental wellbeing, so even if it isn't professionally, having a support system like family members you trust or close friends is also very good.
I've also had mixed experiences with therapy, and most often it's been because I haven't felt like I'm listened to or my words are taken seriously by the therapist, which is a good sign you need to change therapists. Hoping it all works out for you, there's always some form of help to get

Before the pandemic, I was very insecure and probably at the lowest point in my life. The pandemic changed that for me. I had that Post Traumatic Growth. I started listening to what I wanted to be and do and I actually became happier. Before, I tried pleasing others and putting myself in my own box. The pandemic had opened my eyes that everyone has their own things to think about, they aren’t the ones that have these high expectations of me, I did that to myself. I learned that I wasn’t being the person I wanted. I now want to do things I haven’t tried before and I want to do more social things, which used to scare me. I love the person I am now, but I’m still learning about myself now. I hope that anyone that has been through what I have that they know that I am routing for them and that I hope the best for them. What worked for me was leaning into stuff I love: dance, music, and art; but that can differ for everyone. What I want someone to take away from this is: do what you love and love what you do. In doing so, you’ll be happier and you will have a greater understanding of who you truly are 💕

I was already alone with absolute no emotion to anything. It was the worst. Covid hit and everyone started freaking out about staying home and not physically seeing their loved ones. Honestly it hurt seeing everyone freaking out about being socially isolated and unable to go out. I saw this and then I realised how awful my life has become because people were living it. I started working on the 24/11/21 and I was the happiest I've ever been (first job) it was exactly what I didn't know I needed. I felt like I had a purpose for the first time, that I'm worth something, people were talking to me, I was learning, gaining new skills, was contributing something that was needed, the job had so much variety and it made it so fun, I loved it so much. I stopped getting shifts at the end of the year last year and this year I haven't been rostered. They say it's because it's slow this time of the year. I've been pretty much unemployed and slowly getting back to how I was. The difference this time is I talk to two sometimes the people. But yesterday I didn't want to talk to anyone. Which makes me feel like he doesn't take my issues seriously or listen as attentively and empathetically as I try to. These last few years have easily and undoubtedly been the most difficult I have ever had to deal with. You bring so much insight on the topic. I whish I could have had such a valuable source back then before I finally got heard out.
Since I was already in (yet another) deep depression before the pandemic started, the isolation itself did not affect me that much. I had pretty much curled up in my lonely snailhouse anyway. I could even benefit partly from the homework (that had not been offered before).
And the pandemic surely forced the awareness to take mental health seriously. (Still not enough, meaning all too often it is still seen as "second class", but definitely more than before. And mostly, (for very sad reasons of course) more people can relate better now.)

Mental health is one of those topics that most people like to talk a big game about, about how mental health is so important and needs to be taken seriously and all, but then when the chips on the table other things wind up taking priority over actually taking action to deal with mental health issues.

When quarantine first hit and people freaked out about being stuck at home i was like "Its not that bad. Yall are just overreacting" but after a while i realized that it isnt normal to be comfortable in complete isolation. For the past four years I've essentially imprisoned myself for no reason and all its done is slowly deteriorate my mental health. At this point its turned into full-blown agoraphobia. I don't even know what to do about it because my social anxiety prevents me from reaching out for help.

I love the comment about growing and struggling at the same time! I've found I can also experience 2 emotions at once, simultaneously. to anyone who see this, kind words go a long way.
I think that I'm the happiest I've ever been right now (after some stuff) but whenever someone is kind to me it really stands out because most people just ignore me due to me being "quiet" (severe social anxiety),
and that kindness remains on my mind forever and makes me even happier. at the very least, treat people like people.
