@Dorie, so glad I can help. Great question about your stylist. Tough to say how they’ll react but it’s worth a try. If you approach from “I’m having a hard time explaining what I want but this video explains it”, that wouldn’t bother me as a stylist.

I've had so many bad experiences that I gave up on going to a hair salon and I started cutting my hair on my own. Tried to do layers and thought I ruined my hair, but thankfully I came across your video and I was able to fix it! You saved my hair!!!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise!!
Already watched thousands of layer haircut tutorials. Never found such an awesome explanation and so much competence as you have. Thanks a lot. This is DEFINITELY my favourite hair cut I could wear for the rest of my life! 🎉❤
When you blended the front layers (when they were so blunt) I said "wow". You just did a couple quick cuts and it completely changed the front. You are very talented.
Omgoodness!! This is awesome! I’m a stylist of 29 years, I cut my layers almost exactly like you do!! But you’re so right, the front is tricky. I almost always slide the front w a razor as well. I love the technical, can’t get too technical for me! Lol I love your videos, I love to lean new techniques and ideas, thank you sooo much!! Your wife is a gorgeous model, too, btw!!
Your wife is pretty and maybe this convinced me on the layers. I’m a wash and go person and rarely blow dry or flat iron. And her hair looked good before and after you styled it.

Oh my gosh! You just addressed every issue & complaint I've ever had over the yrs with the way hair dressers cut my layers. Now I know it's possible to have it cut correctly. Thank you soooi much!
Thank you! I used a round brush for that style. The only reason I didn’t go into how I did that was because (well actually 2 reasons) I find most people won’t use them and would rather use hot tools of some sort. I also did another video about how to style your hair at home where I used her as a model and taught the exact methods I used for this look in that video.
Thank you so much! I cut my own long and strong hair in layers on my own for years and I always get compliments. I watched so many layering tutorials on RUclips from professionals to non-professionals and your video was by far the most clear, concise, and educational one. Thank you! I will try this technique next time I cut my hair. And btw, this woman is beautiful and her hairstyle looked AMAZING! 👌👏♥️
I have very thick long hair. I get compliments all the time. My stylist is constantly wanting me to cut it. I am happy with it as is and very afraid to change! I am convinced not to layer. Thanks this came at the right time!
I have hair past my waist. I add just a few layers - much less than he does. My profile photo is not good. It’s usually very voluminous. So I do prefer very long hair with very few layers, but just a touch, and not point cutting the ends, because that makes dry hair look like a broom.
This! This is how I want my hair cut, but I don’t ever end up this way! I wish you lived closer, I’d have you cut mine! I’m totally going to show my stylist this!
It has taken me forever to grow out my postmenopausal hair and now I'm terrified to let anybody touch it. This video helped me gain confidence that if I talk to my stylist about what I really want she will be able to do it. Thank you so much.
This is exactly what I want, but with bangs. I took a screenshot of the finished look but I wish there was a way to ask a stylist to watch this video without offending them🤔
Thank you!!! I appreciate that! You could always take it to them and tell them you’re not sure how to explain what you want but you thought this video explained it better than you could. That wouldn’t offend me as a stylist....

Love love the finished look!!! Best long layered cut I've seen... can't wait for the styling video.... thanku so much for the informative videos. I appreciate it. 🙌
Wow! Those are beautifully cut layers, you did such a great job of her hair and seem so passionate about what you do! Who knew there was so much to learn about how to use scissors!
Thanks Justin! Perfect timing! I have a consult w/ a new stylist this afternoon. Struggling to find a stylist that can manage long hair on a 56 year old!
@@peppermyntpatti144 What happened Patti? I think my consult went OK Dash I got a good cut very well blended layers. But I haven’t shampoo dial myself yet. It’s A few inches shorter Stan I wanted, but she had to blend in the layers that were previously there
It took me 5 different hair stylists to finally find one that would give me ACTUAL layers in my long hair! They just wouldn’t do it for some reason. I’m no expert but I knew what I wanted. Finally found a great one and I love having layered long hair!
Oh my gosh. I have your wife’s “before” hair and would be really really happy with her “after” hair. You’re a great stylist! Just saw on your website you’re in Portland and am thinking 🤔 a 5 hour drive for a cut would totally be worth it!! 😁
I love love her hair. So many hairstylists over texturize and leave hair wimpy with a ledge. I have had so many haircuts with a ledge. I wish more stylists had your knowledge! My hair would be 😊 too. Thank you as always for another great video!
Omgoodness I sooo appreciate you! Thank you for sharing these important videos you are the first in all my years that share all these tricks!! You give us control over our hair!!! 💃🏻💕💃🏻💕💃🏻🤣
You're a genius Justin Hickox! I wish I could find someone in my area who knew how to cut long, fine, thin hair without doing that awful thinning at the ends - it looks like I need the ends trimmed all over again. So frustrating. It was helpful to see the side by side shot of how you got the front to look so soft & blended. Obviously I don't know anything about cutting hair to get what I want, but by watching your vid you explained why the hair should be pulled straight up to 180 deg rather than to the side at 90 deg. Thank you sir - you and your beautiful wife have a great day : )
I'd luv to c u do this long layer cut on a curly -girl's head! Layers on my 3c curls r sooo difficult to manage! Every time I've let a stylist cut layers I've regretted it caz all layers do is make my hair even more curly, more voluminous, more poufy, and frizzy, which is the exact opposite of what I want! Last time I had it done I wore hats for a year until it grew back out! !! So wish my hair were straight, or at least just wavy. Those girls have so many more style options!
I definitely hear you there. Curly hair is definitely a bit different than straight hair in the Larian process. They’re absolutely nuances that are specific to curly hair. I definitely want to create a series of videos about curly hair to dive into some of those.
I have very straight hair that does not hold volume or curl, even with perms. I would love to have just enough curl to keep the ends with a slight curl.
I have been getting my hair cut the same style as you did. My hair dresser of 15 years moved out of state. I have noticed since I have a new hair dresser cutting my hair, my hair looks so thin at the ends when it never did before. Thank you for your video. I can explain in better words what I want. Excellent hair dressers are very hard to find.
Hi Justin. I’m 57 n my hair grows past my behind to this day! It’s crazy. I go to get just the bottom cut off n I swear out of 5 visits to salons I left with horribly uneven hair🤬 how trained professionals can’t cut long wavy hair is pathetic n I ended up with having to have 8 inches cut off so now it’s right past my boobs. IF I was ever lucky enough to have someone like you later my hair I’d be in heaven. It’s an issue 😢
Do you think you could include in description exactly what to tell our hair stylist so we can get this cut?! I love it and have always had boring long later straight hair. You have a new subscriber! Thank you!!!!
Great video and a very beautiful haircut! I got my haircut last Saturday. Went for the layers after watching your channel. Got a very similar style to the one you just presented. I'm very happy with the way I look now. My face looks much better and I don't have "the artistic mess" on my had anymore 😀 Thank you Justin! You're great!
After watching 5:16 of this video,I went ahead and stopped it.Didn’t finish it.Because I can’t believe it! I have finally found the video I have been looking for, during my home hair cutting journey. Why? Mr. Hubby-you seem to have intimate understanding about women’s long hair, and the love/hate layering relationship. And this is the first video I have ever watched, where a hairdresser wasn’t just rambling thru the usual words and information; some have been very good, even amazingly talented-don’t get me wrong-but that’s all they were. (no offense meant, seriously, to anyone, got nothing but love for ya here😘) I don’t think any of them understood what a bad haircut can do to some women, or men’s sense of well being.( not everyone😁) I never got that been-there-done-that-I-get-it sense, like I am getting so far from you. You come across like you truly want to help. An emotional connection. Or at least I felt one, when you made me realize It wasn’t just me that wonders why the hair around my ears layers out like stringy thin crap. And the hubby-wife duo? Her hair means business, and you know what they say: happy wife=happy life.( wifey; you have done good, girl. Your hair probably makes the angels sing, and you don’t have to make an appointment to boot.)To wrap it up: I going to watch all your videos, tell my gal pals, make my wonderful hubby watch them, too( oh yes, I got plans for him) may you get tons of revenue from your vids, and a big fat thank you-7 yrs ago, I got my hair botched. Bad. Layer job. Said that’s it. Went to Cosmetology school in HS in 89.Home cutting, lots of trial and error, botched it a lot myself. Almost, almost “perfected” my method-except for the ear area, and couple other things. Close to my “dream hair”. Hey-maybe I might get angel hair, too when I done with your videos! All silliness aside-main reason I wanted to comment, when so many people like to complain, it seems they will take the time to do that, and only a few take the time to praise. And you guys both deserve a praise. Thank you so much again. I can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos! Hope both of you are having a wonderful day😃
Wow! How do I even reply to this. You are way too kind. I so much appreciate everything that you said and all of these kind words. Reading comments like this reinvigorate my desire to continue creating videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. I truly appreciate you.
Very informative video. I am 42 years old and I got the FIRST decent (the way I have ways wanted) haircut with layers. I feel I have a lot more options with styling than before having the long layers.
Thank you. As always, great information. BTW, your wife was beautiful before the haircut, but the finished look is wow. Can't wait to take this information to my stylist.
Has a thin hair/balding woman, last summer gave up trying to explain my hairdresser I wanted something like this and cut my hair short. Guess I’ll need to let it grow and show her your video. And if not, change the hairdresser. Thank you
Thank you for such a well explained video. I tried last weekend and for the first time my hair didn't look too short, the shoulder area still looked full and I could see some nice layering. Learning about the section going from the temples to the crown was a fantastic tip for me.
So informative Justin. I’m watching the series before I book time with my stylist, but I’m not sure she will “get it”. You mentioned in a response to someone you wouldn’t be offended if a client asked you to watch a video. I think you are a rare and special person. I think my stylist would not take kindly to it. So...what to do...I’ll watch next weeks video and see if I can tactfully explain to her in my pedestrian, non hair stylist, limited knowledge.
I hear ya! I think you having as much knowledge as you can have as to why mistakes happen and what’s going on then trying to voice those concerns may be your best option. I hope it turns out. Can’t wait to hear how it all goes for you.
Love these 3 videos Justin, they are absolutely perfect. I have watched them all twice now so when I go to my hair dresser next I am going to be able to explain exactly what I mean when she asks me what I want done plus I will look at her technique compared to yours. She is a new hairdresser for me and has only cut it twice but I have had previous dressers over the years do all those incorrect things you mention in these videos which made my hair look thin, choppy and over layered and that made me scared of getting my hair cut hence it quite long. Fingers crossed for my next appointment now I have your valuable knowledge to take with me.
I'm absolutely so chuffed I found your videos, your tips are ace, I've got very long hair and I'm trying to work out what to do with it now getting older!! I love the videos outside in those gorgeous views 👍
Yeah!!! Just what I needed! Thank heaven my stylist has done the cut correctly so far, now it's just me trying to copy this cause he isnt working! Wish me luck! Thanks for your help!
@@justinhickox yes going to remember the steps and try it myself (maybe) lol my hair is getting close to my waist and I need to clean up the bottom of it my layers have almost grown all the way out. Which is frustrating but I'll figure it out hopefully! Thanks
I just subscribed to your channel. I watched your video about long layers. My hair is long very thick and naturally curly. I wish you were closer to layer my hair lol I can never find anyone to layer my hair right. Your video helped me understand the way my hair needs layerd. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this video!! I have long hair but I was worried about how to cut it? Now I have this to watch and learn what I needed to do I can get it cut right!! So thank you again!! 💯🥰😉🤗💯💯💯💯💯
I love your wife's hair color and highlights. What hair color info do I need to give my stylist? I am 58 yrs old, tired of my gray hair and am ready to go back to coloring it. I enjoy watching your videos, it helps me learn how to care and style my own hair.
I absolutely love that hair cut! I used to get my hair cut similarly when I was younger and I have no clue why I stopped. Guess it's time to go back to that thanks. p.s. your wife is beautiful.
I'd love to see more videos regarding people with curly hair. Does layering that you just demonstrated good for folks with curly hair. I mostly wear my hair straight, but also curly. I have a loose curl and I color my hair due to having gray hair. I also have thick hair. With that being said, my hair is slightly course and straightening can be a challenge so it's smooth. I like how it looks using a flat iron, it seems the iron looses fullness or volumne. I do use product and add a small bit of oil that helps to add smoothness needed for hair that has curl. It's seems that as I have aged (56), my curly hair isn't as pretty when I style it curly using a diffuser.
Wow, I wish I could get such a great haircut. Looks amazing. I had long hair down to my waist almost, but after 2 cuts post-lockdown now it's just barely below my shoulders (due to poor communication with the new stylists I went to and not fighting to keep my length 😭). I'm mourning the loss of my long locks, but it never had that kind of amazing shape. I hope one day to find a hairdresser I love after having moved abroad 3 years ago and losing my stylist that to went to for 12 years and always made me feel fabulous.
This helps so much, thank you! When I'm at the salon at least now I understand what is happening (and help explain when something isn't cut right). Because sometimes I love my hair, other times I don't and I never understood why one cut was different from another or why she does what she does. Good news - my hairdresser seems to cut my hair exactly like you do here.
I have curly hair and this is the cut my old hairdresser used to give me that so many hairdressers have failed to understand when I try to explain it to them. So tired of choppy layers, gotta find a hairdresser who will watch this video for me now 😂
Stunning result 💖 🤩 I’m trying to grow mine out a little more. It’s just past my shoulders now and this video has definitely motivated me to keep growing and not succumb to a cut through boredom. Definitely want mine to wind up looking more like your Mrs’ hair although a slightly shorter version as I’m only 5ft tall and don’t want to look all hair like Cousin IT lol 😂 Will show this to my stylist thank you 😊❣️
Hi. This is exactly the style I would like but I'm not sure if it suits a round face. Going to my hairdresser next Friday but still unsure to adopt this style which I adore! Congrats to your lovely wife!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️your Chanel the way you go in to details and specifics great explanations of everything . Questions I have always had but never had enough time to ask because you don’t want to take up your stylist whole day I am a freak when it comes to my hair I’ve had short pixie‘s to bobs long and short keep up the great cotent
You are amazing do you have a salon? My hairstylist retired quite a few years back and my hair has been neglected so badly because it’s difficult for me to find somebody to cut my hair the way she did I absolutely loved it
This man is clearly a wizard. Thank you so much for teaching your craft, your wife's hair looks amazing! I do have a question only a professional stylist can answer. Would you be offended if a client brought you a video like this as a reference? My stylist is young (she is lovely, hard working, and eager to please clients) but she is pretty inexperienced. I've only gone to her 3 times (I'm bad, I know... but I only go once a year) and I really wouldn't want to offend her. I just know that I am not great at explaining exactly what, and this cut is it!
LOVED this technical style post! Absolutely makes so much more sense, now that I have the next "layer" of detail- meaning, I knew how to do the basic shape/layering, it's the blending I struggle with. Sooo, I will likely watch this one a few more times~ wishing I could give extra thumbs too!~ because I need to commit it to memory. Maybe even cut my hair while watching =)
Appreciate what you two do for us viewers.... Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your private life and humor! Very much love your shows...all the way from good 'ol Germany.
this was really useful thank you - i needed instruction on exactly how to do layers in the back. i must say however that those texturizing shears are a no-go for curly or wavy hair that tends to frizz, and they dull shine in any hair. in fact even point cutting, if it’s moderately deep, creates frizz. for my 2a/b hair i’ve found the cleaner the cut, the less frizz and more shine. i need SOME blending and texturizing (via point cutting) to create volume near the roots, but it’s always a matter of finding the right balance and also using other techniques to create volume at the crown. good luck to all us DIYers!
I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I sell houses, and have NO clue as to hair cutting. I so wish I could have my hair done by you. Sadly I am in South Africa, and you are across the other side of the world hahaha. No worries, I will share this video with my stylist, and tell her this is what I want. Thank you for sharing this video, so interesting 😊
holy crap you are the only one I've seen so far that cuts hair the way I do.cant wait to see part 3 I actually haven't found anyone in a long time to cut my hair the way I do as well. its definitely years of experience love this 2 thumbs up and a subscribe. finally someone who thinks the way I do with hair cutting don't get me wrong I've seen some really nice haircuts but I don't always agree with many because there is such a thing as over cutting example I will see some great hair cutting going on and then the hair cutter wont stop cutting. I see it all the time then watch them over work the style because they went to far and that leaves the client going home not being able to achieve doing their own hair at home. one of the main reasons I had a hard time trusting someone to cut my hair is because I can feel when they are doing it wrong so many times I've had to just tell them just stop cutting politely and finish it myself but then I will let them style it just to not make them feel bad and go home and re do it myself.very cool channel looking forward to watching all of your videos. thank you for sharing them.your wife's hair looks fabulous looks long light and bouncy yet full at same time.
I love you 2! You always make me laugh. I never realized all the technical components that go into a cut. Thank you for an awesome explanation, I will be watching my hairstylist closely at my next cut.
Omg all the things you said not to do is what happens when I get my hair done! They never get it right!! I’ve been growing out my hair for years from these horrible haircuts!! I currently have the whole bob kinda look with stragely hair coming underneath just how you explained! 😪 to scared to get it “fixed”
So sorry to hear that! That’s part of the reason I created my masterclass about how to cut and color your own hair at home. There are a lot of amazing stylists out there, but in those times where you may not feel comfortable with trying to find one, I want people to have the knowledge to do their own hair the RIGHT way and make it simple for them! Hope you’re gets turned around soon for ya!

Hope it went well. I had a consult, thought we were on the same page. I had pics. Nope. She needed to watch this video. 🙁
That’s awesome. I’m so glad to found the right stylist for you!!
Oh my gosh. I have your wife’s “before” hair and would be really really happy with her “after” hair. You’re a great stylist! Just saw on your website you’re in Portland and am thinking 🤔 a 5 hour drive for a cut would totally be worth it!! 😁
I would fly many hours to get my haircut by the guy.
I live in Ohio. I'm thinking about booking a flight!
Omgoodness! The finished look is perfection! I wish you were my stylist!
I have long hair and prior experiences with layers sucked. Now I can see why. So ready to try again.
I love love her hair. So many hairstylists over texturize and leave hair wimpy with a ledge. I have had so many haircuts with a ledge. I wish more stylists had your knowledge! My hair would be 😊 too. Thank you as always for another great video!
This is exactly what I need...and my hair appointment is tomorrow!!
Thanks so much! :)
Awesome! I’m so glad I could help. Can’t wait to hear how your hair turns out.
This is so helpful! Thank you. Her smile at the end made me smile!
Your wife is the picture perfect model! Thank you!
Wow. She looked 10 years younger in the "after" shot. You guys are a beautiful couple! Great video!
@@justinhickox Yes! Can't wait! 😎
Thank you so much. Sorry to hear that’s happening for you but I appreciate the vote of confidence!
Your wife is gorgeous and her hair looks fantastic. My hair is a bit shorter, but I want this layered cut for my length.
My face looks much better and I don't have "the artistic mess" on my had anymore 😀
Thank you Justin! You're great!
That’s so awesome!!! I love it! So glad you like the style!!!
I truly appreciate you.
what an amazing haircut you gave your wife--she looks lovely. i like seeing haircuts :)
Thank you so much! I appreciate that! I think I’m going to do more of these series.
Thank you!! I’ll make sure to let her know you said that!
Such a sweet couple. Enjoy watching them together ❤. Very informative video!! Thank you
Has a thin hair/balding woman, last summer gave up trying to explain my hairdresser I wanted something like this and cut my hair short. Guess I’ll need to let it grow and show her your video. And if not, change the hairdresser. Thank you
So sorry to hear that! Hopefully next time it turns out better for you!
I love learning from you! You were born to educate/teach!🙏🏼
Thank you! I really appreciate that.
Pretty haircut. The after sure made a big difference. It looks more styled. Goes better with her face than the before...no doubt.
This was soooo helpful!!! I’m a wig wearer and have to alter mine to fit the style I like so this was great!!!
Thank you Justin! My haircut but way better! Your wife is lucky!! I’m growing out that top layer!!! You explained it perfectly!!!
Thank you! I’m really glad I could help. I really appreciate that feedback.
I need you in my country, Czechia. This is exactly what I want.
Thank you! I DO like to travel! :)
You’re so welcome! I’m glad I could help. When you say you copy it, are you meaning at home do you want to cut the style on yourself?
@@justinhickox yes going to remember the steps and try it myself (maybe) lol my hair is getting close to my waist and I need to clean up the bottom of it my layers have almost grown all the way out. Which is frustrating but I'll figure it out hopefully! Thanks
I just subscribed to your channel. I watched your video about long layers. My hair is long very thick and naturally curly. I wish you were closer to layer my hair lol I can never find anyone to layer my hair right. Your video helped me understand the way my hair needs layerd. Thanks for sharing.
OMG OMG! This was an actual informative and eye-opening video!!!
This is very interesting. I don't know much about hair but what you explained makes sense.
Thank you! That’s a huge compliment!
She's gorgeous... I love that she was crying.
I can’t argue there.
Thank you for this video!! I have long hair but I was worried about how to cut it? Now I have this to watch and learn what I needed to do I can get it cut right!! So thank you again!! 💯🥰😉🤗💯💯💯💯💯
That’s awesome! Thank you! I’m so glad I could help!
Thank you! I’m so glad you liked it. I appreciate that. I’ll definitely let my wife know you said that, she’ll love to hear it.
I hope one day to find a hairdresser I love after having moved abroad 3 years ago and losing my stylist that to went to for 12 years and always made me feel fabulous.
wow so nice to see you do an in salon demo!
So tired of choppy layers, gotta find a hairdresser who will watch this video for me now 😂
Love the finished look!!!... this was explained to perfection!... great video!... 💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you! I’m so glad it made sense!
Stunning result 💖 🤩 I’m trying to grow mine out a little more. It’s just past my shoulders now and this video has definitely motivated me to keep growing and not succumb to a cut through boredom. Definitely want mine to wind up looking more like your Mrs’ hair although a slightly shorter version as I’m only 5ft tall and don’t want to look all hair like Cousin IT lol 😂 Will show this to my stylist thank you 😊❣️
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it! Can’t wait to hear how your style turns out!!
I'm 53 and have very long thick hair and I'm going to the salon today I pray they don't mess my hair up
I hope it turned out well!
Thank you for this video. So helpful and your wife is lovely.
What a lucky lady! The after look is great. I wish I lived near your area.
Thank you!! I appreciate that! If you ever ARE in the area...stop in!
Dude, great content! Can’t wait to try this at home once my hair is long again 😂
Thank you so much! I appreciate that!
Your wife is so pretty! But your cut really brought out her features!
Wow, fantastic improvement! I will definitely consider this cut. Thanks!!
12:13 This made me LOL! 🤣
Thanks for the great content!
She went from looking basic to a freakin' movie star! Such a great transformation!
Thank you! You’re WAY too kind. She’s definitely a star in my book! :)
holy crap you are the only one I've seen so far that cuts hair the way I do.cant wait to see part 3 I actually haven't found anyone in a long time to cut my hair the way I do as well. its definitely years of experience love this 2 thumbs up and a subscribe. finally someone who thinks the way I do with hair cutting don't get me wrong I've seen some really nice haircuts but I don't always agree with many because there is such a thing as over cutting example I will see some great hair cutting going on and then the hair cutter wont stop cutting.
Hope you’re gets turned around soon for ya!
cool, your wife has a widows peak! thank you for this particular video, i just sent it to my stylist and told her that this is exactly what i want. i'm glad that i'm not the only one that cries at youtube videos lol
Haha! That’s the best compliment!!! Thank you! Glad I could help!
Yes this is the style I’ve been trying to get !!!!
Love that cuts I just wish I could get someone to do that for me. Thank you so much for sharing all these tips and tricks with us.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Your wife is s00 pretty. I love her smile.
Thanks for all the tips!
I love your hair & I personally think it looks better longer. I think winnebago should wear their hair in whatever way they prefer...it has no bearing on looking "younger"...as long as you like it. Yours looks great!
Love the video. Exactly what I want. How do I ask for this hair cut so the hair stylist knows exactly what I want with absolutely no misunderstandings lol
Wow! This video is sooo educational! I'm not even a hairdresser or a hair stylist, and I enjoyed watching this and learning from you. Great training skills! 👌I'm definitely saving this to show other professionals what it is that I want, since it's hard for me to convey it. This makes it a much easier task! Thank you! Greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹 [Europe]
