It's also alarming on how many people didn't know they could have all local account. Most people just mindlessly proceed through. More awareness the better!

Exactly what also happens behind the scenes is when you find out that you are opting in to things that you where never asked especially if you do nothing and do not check hidden settings within your accounts or device settings.

It's probably because windows shoves this down your throat. I think at one point I couldn't even continue to windows on an old laptop without making a Microsoft account although I think it was a free version. I have grown up with local accounts and was taught that's a normal thing so I always opt out of anything online but I also understand the people today who think it's necessary to create a Microsoft account and be online

Most of problems related to OneDrive or other Microsoft related services are so much easier to fix on a local account, that should be reason enough to stick to offline.
More of than not, using a MS account causes these issues in the first place, which I've seen first hand. Are a joy to diagnose and fix.

On Win 11 they already don't offer to set a local account during Win installation, but there is a method to do this, you have to fill a wrong email an few times to try to log in with it, then It will say that it is a wrong account and will offer the option to go ahead with a local account. You don't need an old version of Windows 11.

Yes there is in Windows 11 Pro. It will force online account if you set the windows for home use. But instead of home use set it up for domain join. It will ask what workgroup you would like to join but you can skip it and it will move forward with a local account. No tricks required.

  • @StaySic4Ever

So far I can still skip and use local account in installation. Using Rufus for bootable USB there is option that helps too. I'm sure we will always be able to have local account.
On Android it's more aggressive as far as logging in online.

so how will change if i were to switch to a local account right now, for example i use a hardened version of firefox, will my settings remain the same? i save almost everything to an external hard drive so i'm not really worried about my documents or anything like that, but i have heard that microsoft can pretty much see what you're doing on an online account, if that's true, that's creepy as hell

Really the only advantage of a Microsoft account is to prevent you from having to repurchase the Windows license when installing on a new drive for a computer. Recommend using a Microsoft account that has no real name and an email that is used for verifications. After that just switch to the local account and switch off the telemetry stuff in the Services program.
Also the Microsoft account does help sync your Halo saves if you wish to play Halo Master Chief Collection but only sign through the Xbox Live service not the windows service.

I hate that they're trying to put us in a position to where we have NO choice as to whether or not our data is reported back to Microsoft and used for who knows what. Great video, man. On Windows 11, I made the online account, then made the offline account, then I deleted the online account. It is a hoop to jump through, but it was necessary. I use each of my computers for different purposes. I do not want all of them to have the same apps or files, just the necessary apps and files.

To add to some other comments I'm seeing, it is worth mentioning that Rufus itself also comes with options to auto configure local accounts when it properly detects a windows 11 ISO. I should note that I'm often already on a Win 11 pc when doing this and Rufus provides the ability to copy information from my local account on my main pc to the new Win 11 copy. So I'm not sure If I should put an an * to that claim or not but hey, this is a great video, I'm glad to see people maintaining awareness to the idea that you can still keep control of your system. Also thank you for showing us that online tool for specific windows builds, this is awesome.

You can also just pick Use for Business or whatever it says, rather than personal use, go to sign in options, and pick "Domain Join". Microsoft needs offline accounts to set up domains, so this will pretty much always work for getting an offline account. Pro only of course, don't use home.

You may want to update the video. Microsoft has done some changes in the latest update where the local account is a bit tougher to find. It is now refers to logging into apps as opposed to local account. One other thing none of these videos I keep watching address. All this data is stored on onedrive. You can uninstall onedrive. That stops the synchronization of your data.
For me, I stear more to a local account for two reason. First, my work machine and my game machine are two totally different configurations. Secondly, and more importantly, is data security. OneDrive has had a less than steller reputation when it comes to data longevity. Files tend to disappear on their own. Sometimes they are in the trash, sometimes not so much. I'm not sure what Microsoft thinks PCs are used for, but for me, being an author and grandfather, my data files of all types are too important to trust OneDrive with them.
So, moral of the story, if you want to login with a Microsoft account, but don't want data sync'd to the cloud, simply uninstall OneDrive under apps.

What’s annoying is you can’t create 2 accounts you would get confused about the profiles, and if your somewhere in public, somebody peeks over your shoulder and copies the email and then text you 1000 spam and “ohh no you have a virus” like bruh why (this acctually happened to my friend)

What is the most chilling thing is Exchange online- if you have a on site exchange hosted by yourself, but you also use office 365 there is a thing- if you chceck the box in office 365 licensing that is called exchange online, it will move your freaking "local" account in to the cloud. I shit you not.

That tied to the MB BS isn’t even true I’ve found. I have a TON of old Windows 7 OEM keys off scrapped school computers and they’ve all activated Windows 10 Pro just fine. For the amount of tinkering I do, I know I’ve reused them several times. Never once failed to activate as long as not tied to a Microsoft account. Can’t vouch for actual 10 keys, but the 7 keys activate it just fine.

I've always used local accounts because the sky is blue. Nah seriously it's the only logical choice, I knew right when Microsoft started doing all this the multiple issues that could in theory happen and it swayed the scale towards local account creation forever for me. So much easier, I don't have to worry about getting locked out because I always have remembered the password, data backup is easier, nothing I have to connect to the internet for JUST FOR LOGGING INTO the PC I already own.

I wanted to upgrade my laptop end of last year and bought an XPS15. There is no way around having an online MS account at first install. So pissed off was I at being forced into something that was not disclosed prior to purchase and disagree with, that I sent it back. I'm still using my 7 year old Alienware 13r3.

Mate, I have to stop you right there, the idea is good, but there is a easy way to skip it, just type "Admin" in the field where you have to type email, and admin again in the password, it will said a error and then you can make a offline account, does not matter wich version or build you are on "Windows 11". Try it and reply here :)
For all Windows 11 home, you dont have the option to skip, but this works on even that.

Anything important is on Linux. Oh and Forza requires a microsoft account anyway

Need one critical error on the online account portion.... For the longest time now Microsoft does not pre-download and pre-install your universal Windows programs, I believe when they converted over to Windows 10 or one of the releases of Windows 10 they stopped doing this yes your desktop changes yes your icons change yes your OneDrive changes yes most of your settings change but they do not reinstall and install automatically uwp and this is a piss off
It was one of the favorite things I liked about Windows 8.1 you go to a new machine you type in your credentials boom everything shows up video apps everything
Now you actually have to go to the damn store and specifically find all your pre-purchased and freeware applications download them install them and then they're automatically at that point registered for example Facebook Twitter RUclips and a couple others you just download install them and they're already set up
Microsoft if you're listening to this guy bring this feature back I don't want to have to hunt down my apps that didn't bring back tile mode give us the damn option like you did in Windows 10 modern layout classic layout work at least give us a sub panel for Windows 11 for tiled apps
