Really interesting video - I backpacked through Iran in 2016 and received nothing but friendship and respect from everyone I met, including an imam I shared a compartment with on a night train. Fast forward to 2018 and I spent two years teaching English in Vietnam - again, if anything being an American made me a bit of a celebrity - everyone wanted to talk to me and was super hospitable. As Americans, we could definitely learn a thing or two from these people.
That is bullshit. Because everyone treated you as an american. And there is always the risk of Hostage diplomacy and you go in custody for nothing. So be aware of Iran.
Great Reflection Civ, I definitely take away that from your video, learn to differentiate the people from the government, I have done that too in my many travels, including traveling to Russia and Ukraine, good friends and good people in both countries.
For locals to see you and talk with you, knowing you travel and could be anywhere on Earth, but chose to be there and see life through their eyes is an automatic sign of respect.
I got abducted in East Timor. Walking down the street alone, at night, big stupid. Big black SUV pulls up fast, two big guys jump out and signal that I better get in the bloody car. Now. I'm tripping, I figure this is how you end up in a LiveLeak video as we pull up to a house far into the jungle. I get taken into an nearly empty room with a table and a couple chairs. The big dudes go and guard the door and I'm alone in there for like an hour. A car pulls up and I'm thinking this is it, this is the big shot and now we're getting LiveLeak'ed. The door opens and two well dressed men walk in with a huge box of takeout and treats! Turns out they're professors or something, and their bodyguards told them they found this random kid just wondering around so I got "friendship kidnapped" and taken back to their place because they thought I was lonely and in danger. We chowed down and talked about some pretty deep world politics stuff (which felt kinda sketchy. I'm a marine conservationist not a poly-sci student!) and they let me sleep on the couch.
Definitely lucky it was them blokes otherwise you would have to hope Australian federal police could rescue you in time not a place for a white fella to be walking at night not knowing that
Right On CivDiv great episode! “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” Mark Twain c.1896
Great story and editing, hope you do more! I've fought in the middle east and appreciate your approach that despite cultures most people just want respect
I learned that in Amsterdam in 1984. After 40 years of the "ugly American" tourists most of the indigenous folk were only tolerant of the drunk frat boys who came through. I was given a huge compliment by being invited to dinner by the proprietor of the small hotel where I stayed. He said typically he would never invite an American but because I asked serious questions and listened to their answers and we had civil discourse he was making an exception!
I applaude you. However, this is not the same. I am a Brit and consider Brits, Dutch and e.g. most Americans as having MANY cultural similarities. The gap is relatively small. We have loads in common. Once you get into the middle East etc we have a far wider gap to cross. We have to show and develop respect and understanding together. It's much harder. I like learning about both cultures and individuals. I have/do so am not just preaching. Not getting at you.
@nickthorp6361 LOL, try to get invited to a Dutch household for dinner as a foreigner and especially Brit or American. We like you on political level due to our similarities. However British and American aren't high on our likable tourist lists. That being said, even as a Dutch myself it would be quite hard and a lot of relation building to get invited to someone's home. Believe me, this is hard. The main reason is we like to keep to ourselves, we are friendly, we will even try to help you (only when you ask though). So getting invited to a Dutch household is not something I, as a Dutch, consider something easy.
@TyczH I haven't been a tourist. Have worked with (very reputable) Dutch companies and a few times a year driven around all of NL for nearly 20 years. Been to some (many even) Dutch family/work get-togethers and social things. Am not bragging so will stop. Not my point. Us good Brits also keep ourselves to ourselves. So am very humbled to be included and sometimes don't attend as it's best for us both. We are neighbours so we should understand each other. At least a bit.
Great topic bro! Glad you brought it up. People are people all around the world. That's definitely one thing I'm grateful for from my time in the military was all the travel I got (at gov expense) and all the amazing people I met all around the world from every different culture. I try and impart my love of travel on every other person, especially family, that I can.
this makes me think a lot of here in ireland. i live near the border in a heavily catholic area which has had a lot of locals fight the british in the troubles and protestants who done the opposite and no matter which religion or party you fought for or against when you talk it only comes down to your character and who you are truly and if you have respect

Spot on when you said "the people are not the same as their government". I'm from Belfast, Northern Ireland and I remember reading that the Iranian Government back in 1981 renamed the street that the British Embassy was on in Tehran from Winston Churchill Street to Bobby Sands Street after the IRA man who died in the Maze Prison in 1981 while on hunger strike. So the British Embassy had to either use that title in their official address or drop it - which of course they did. But it always struck me as rather humorous in a dark way. It is called Bobby Sands Street to this day. I have only heard good reports from people I know who've travelled through Iran en route overland to India. Very hospitable and kind people as you mentioned.

You're 100% right man. Great people all over the world. Been to Asia, United kingdom, Middle East, US, Canada ... Unfortunately 100% of my bad / dangerous travel "quirks" were in the USA. Good and bad people everywhere but seems easier to find bad ones in American cities. Keep up the good work brother. Liking the retrospective series :)
As an Alaskan, we don't really feel American, the lower 48 Americans are a totally different culture, but we definitely get you on appreciating the people of other countries. Thank you for all that you do, we genuinely appreciate the knowledge and wisdom you share.
Well said! Talking with people with mutual respect is the key to understand each other despite the differences in political views, but also religious or cultural. Unfortunately there's people spreading hate for who's different and then propaganda makes that wall even bigger.
Excellent points made in this video. I've lived in Spain, Japan and Ukraine for various years in my life and was in Vietnam last summer on a US warship and I've honestly never been more grateful for the eye opening experience it is to intermingle and immerse into other cultures. It kills your prejudices fast and you will have some of the best experiences of your life in the process. So many Americans fail to leave their hometowns, let alone the country and I highly encourage getting out of dodge and seeing the world if you're able.
Iran had a beautiful country in 50s-60s. They had freedom , and women could wear whatever they wanted to to . The society was educated. The Persians ( that I do know personally) view Iran now as occupied by Islamic t@rrorists. The Persian people deserve their freedom .
Grew up with an Iranian best friend whose family fled during the '79 Revolution. They were Christians so they didn't feel welcome after that whole thing kicked off. They treated me like family, his Mom called me her son lol. I called her Maman. I practically lived at his house on weekends. Gave me a lot of perspective growing up hearing rhetoric about Iran. Was able to easily separate Government and foreign policy from the people.
8:46 100% True, just when you visit some country as tourist, find something about that place.. I'm tired of (mainly americans) complaining on Reddit: "People are not smiling back on me on street" and it is not long time ago that around 30ppl told some US tourist to "don't came back" bcs she was totally unable to behave, saying nonsense, etc. i also met some US tourist who thought that 70y old woman will speak english. etc... Not just for US, but everyone, do a bit of research before you go somwhere.
You should write a book when you get much older. You have great stories & experiences. Im no person to tell another what to do, but from a 38 year old, i can tell you those Monster energy drinks are bad for you, bro. Not just the caffeine. I used to drink 2 green ones a day.
This is perhaps the craziest civ div video. You're such a genuine human being. From your combat videos it seems like you should be battered broken and full of hatred, but you're not. If anything it is ironic because your personality exudes a genuine love for your fellow man but I've also seen you shoot at so many people before. Just sort of a hard circle to square.
When I was in I deployed to Eastern Europe. Met active Russians there. We talked and it was no big deal. We all drank each others tabs and had a good night.
Spot on m8 - get out there, see the world and meet new pople, experience new cultures and languages and GROW in yourself and the understanding (and possibly "tolerance") of others - peace out
All power too you man I’m not trying to call you out on some pretty obvious facts but live your best and if others want to donate to you doing that more power to you and make sure you try to live a fruitful life so it’s as pure as it can be. I’m obviously not cool with your discharge and your service but you did it to the standards of the UCMJ so congratulations
Ho Chi Minh (The Communist Leader Of Vietnam) Actually wanted help from the U.S. to kick out the French but we decided to help the French crack down on the Vietnamese people so Ho Chi Minh got help from the Soviet Union and thus causing the Vietnam war.
Sir you are so brave.. high respect to you and all the soldiers in the world.. when soldiers are deployed anywhere, it's like they are all ready to face death anytime😢😢😢
The PMF are not Iranians Civ. They are different groups of Iraqi militia units that either were remnants of the anti-American resistance, or formed new as voluntary forces to help fight against ISIS. The majority of these forces are Shia Islamists, which is why you would see lots of pictures of Qasem and other Islamist leaders.
I am Iranian. I am glad that nothing happened to you. But try not to get caught by the Iranian military next time. They are not kind and people themselves do not like them.
You are so right! And traveling opens your mind to other viewpoints and value systems. I’ve been around some and now living in the US I hears so many people saying the US is the best country in the world. When I ask them if they’ve been outside of here they say “no “.
Love you man and I hope you make an impact while in Ukraine once more. War is ugly but people in general can sit down together and learn from each other, except on college campuses in the US lol. Glory to heroes, Slava Ukraini!
Hey man that was a really cool perspective, how people can just hangout with people despite what messed up stuff is going on. I honestly never thought of that aspect that the fact is it's the government that's messed up and the propaganda machine they have. Even if the people are down to earth 🌎🌍.. I'm also glad you're not in Ukraine as well. You're a good dude and have a great future ahead of you. However never get married to an American girl and especially have kids or think you had kids with her. 😅😅😅 much love from Oregon. Stay safe.
Ive actually heard that Persian people are very hospitable, including in Iran they will invite you over for dinner and into their home for chai as an american. Very beautiful people, unfortunate how our governments divide us
"I distinguish between people and the government and treat others with respect. That is why I went to carry the war for money to other parts of the world, so that MY government would defeat the SAME greedy governments of other countries and establish the dominance of American capital. And yes - don't listen to the media, but I will do what mine promotes."
Yo man that’s what it’s all about. It sounds contradictory, but this is what you’re actually doing it for, right? Like war is a tragedy of human existence, and at the same time, we must fight against evil, both physically and socially! But what we want to get to in the end, is all sitting down together and appreciating one another. Hopefully we can do this, and not let evil get into our ear and convince us to harm each other! Peace brother! I pray for they day we can do this! ✌️❤️💪🙏
Pmt is completely new to me. I had no idea they attacked Iran. I watch a lot of Iranian village life videos and try to keep up with what’s happening where through non mainstream news sources… but I constantly find out , after decades of searching, how little I know. Your perspective is important. I’ve been watched a couple vids here, but don’t really get how this works. Are you some kind of merchant marine? Military subcontractor? How does a soldier go around picking his battles and joining various forces? Does the us government investigate what you were up to overseas?
from what I've gathered, Vietnam doesn't really hold any grudge against America, because they view it as a civil war, and the US was helping one side in it. Like there's people in Vietnam today who fought alongside Americans. Your average American today makes it out like some kind of Iraq style invasion. It wasn't. Now the French on the other hand... I hear they aren't too popular in Vietnam still.
Currently messing around with a digital nvg10 on a bump helmet. Hoping to upgrade to analog down the line but a down payment is a higher priority right now.
That's a pretty crazy experience. Been meaning to ask, how are you liking Vietnam so far? I've been living in Lam Dong province (same as Nha Trang) since July last year. Nha Trang is a pretty common tourist spot for Russians, not surprised you ran into a few there.
I agree with you that there are many friendly people living in hostile countries but at the same time, every hostile government has its share of followers that you don't want to get close to. Just to keep that in mind.

Thank you for sharing you experience. It's interesting. 😊😊😊
Well said! Talking with people with mutual respect is the key to understand each other despite the differences in political views, but also religious or cultural. Unfortunately there's people spreading hate for who's different and then propaganda makes that wall even bigger.
Wise words, well spoken sir.
It was an autocratic monarchy
Bro what 💀 there economy was garbage as the uk had control of most of it oil and had a autocratic monarchy with a secret police
Very interesting story and I absolutely love you channel ❤
Grew up with an Iranian best friend whose family fled during the '79 Revolution. They were Christians so they didn't feel welcome after that whole thing kicked off.
They treated me like family, his Mom called me her son lol. I called her Maman. I practically lived at his house on weekends.
Gave me a lot of perspective growing up hearing rhetoric about Iran. Was able to easily separate Government and foreign policy from the people.
Great content, definitely something to ponder upon.
I used to drink 2 green ones a day.
lol so is alcohol but that doesnt stop anybody. the best we can do is practice moderation...2 a day is alot still and im glad you kicked that though.
even the zero sugar one ?
@@Guillaume548it ain't sugar that's dangerous in energy drinks lol
Sounds like a great time to me!! I agree with you about the the people are different from the government..
Thanks for the story brother
Great video buddy!
Damn man you have some crazy stories. A book deal is needed.
I saw you were in vietnam right away by the tiny monster can and the window screen. :D
I’ve always been saying this, the government is not the people, the people are not the government.
Awesome video! Thanks.
I agree I’ll have to go to Vietnam! I enjoyed Thailand and I’ve heard some great things about Vietnam. Take care God bless.
When I was in I deployed to Eastern Europe. Met active Russians there. We talked and it was no big deal. We all drank each others tabs and had a good night.
This guy is definitely on several watchlists
Thanks for the good video Civ
Spot on m8 - get out there, see the world and meet new pople, experience new cultures and languages and GROW in yourself and the understanding (and possibly "tolerance") of others - peace out
All power too you man I’m not trying to call you out on some pretty obvious facts but live your best and if others want to donate to you doing that more power to you and make sure you try to live a fruitful life so it’s as pure as it can be. I’m obviously not cool with your discharge and your service but you did it to the standards of the UCMJ so congratulations
Its crazy how the saying "if you look for trouble, trouble will find you" because i cant go to detroit and make friends and that shit is a war zone
Civ your storys are the best
Ho Chi Minh (The Communist Leader Of Vietnam) Actually wanted help from the U.S. to kick out the French but we decided to help the French crack down on the Vietnamese people so Ho Chi Minh got help from the Soviet Union and thus causing the Vietnam war.
Sir you are so brave.. high respect to you and all the soldiers in the world.. when soldiers are deployed anywhere, it's like they are all ready to face death anytime😢😢😢
Really good take on the people of these places
The PMF are not Iranians Civ. They are different groups of Iraqi militia units that either were remnants of the anti-American resistance, or formed new as voluntary forces to help fight against ISIS. The majority of these forces are Shia Islamists, which is why you would see lots of pictures of Qasem and other Islamist leaders.
we all remember the original title
I am Iranian. I am glad that nothing happened to you.
But try not to get caught by the Iranian military next time.
They are not kind and people themselves do not like them.
Thank you CivDiv. for sharing your video and stories of being in Iran and fighting with the Kurds … you are a legend…. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
Thanks bro. Please stay safe.
yoo i love ur vids ive been watching foreverr
Iran had a colorful view of Democracy back in the 50s.
It was an autocratic monarchy under the Shah 😭
Hey man that was a really cool perspective, how people can just hangout with people despite what messed up stuff is going on. I honestly never thought of that aspect that the fact is it's the government that's messed up and the propaganda machine they have. Even if the people are down to earth 🌎🌍.. I'm also glad you're not in Ukraine as well. You're a good dude and have a great future ahead of you. However never get married to an American girl and especially have kids or think you had kids with her. 😅😅😅 much love from Oregon. Stay safe.
Well you nailed that. 100% agree
Idk why the Russian thing didn’t click at first and then I about pissed my pants😂, You are quite the phone salesman
100%. I really appreciate your honesty and your conclusion.
- a Canadian Human Rights activist, though getting old
IM WATCHING THIS AGAIN IT WAS AMAZING AF MY BROTHER 💪🏼🇺🇲
I agree with you full-heartedly I just wish I was able to visit these different countries. It’s just I don’t have the money. 😭
Great video I always love your videos some good insight. I have one question now you were smoking hash isn’t that illegal in that country?
That's a pretty crazy experience.
Been meaning to ask, how are you liking Vietnam so far? I've been living in Lam Dong province (same as Nha Trang) since July last year.
Nha Trang is a pretty common tourist spot for Russians, not surprised you ran into a few there.
I agree with you that there are many friendly people living in hostile countries but at the same time, every hostile government has its share of followers that you don't want to get close to. Just to keep that in mind.
I saw a video where it said civ div died in ukraine and I became worried but gladly it was false news, you look great keep it up!
Dad lore shall go insane
This is the only channel I don't put on 2x
I was abducted by Iran, so I ran
Always love the story’s he tells us
What an amazing video bro well said
