Wow I just came across your video because I brought some stencils and it didn’t turn out well… so something told me to go to RUclips and I didn’t know it was a special brush and certain paint 🎨 😊 I will try it again using your technique. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this, the pouncing brush technique was well explained. I'm thinking of cutting my own stencil out of poster board. Is this stencil a paper material, or poster board? And approximately how think it is? Would you recommend using a plastic stencil vs a paper one? I have a mural project coming up, and there are detailed small letters in my design, I'm considering using this method, but not sure exactly the best way to make a stencil for this method. Any feedback would help. Thanks!
Great questions Andrew! This stencil is actually that feels like poster board. So that should work fine. Here's a link to it on Amazon if you want to read the description: amzn.to/3jIXg8y Let us know if you need more help. J&K
What did you use to remove the paint off the stencil, after the entire project was done.? Turpentine, paint remover, water or some dish washing liquid ? Your recommendations please. Enjoyed the video.
Hi Shashi, We used a paper stencil and just let the paint dry. This is what it looks like: amzn.to/33x8Ooe It is pretty durable and can be used again. Here's the complete how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-stencil/ Cheers, Jennifer & Kitty
Yes that should work. The paint we used here is acrylic. Once dry wood stain would work, but will darken the colors. Clear coat should not affect the paint at all. Here's the complete how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-stencil/ Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty
Thank you so much for your very straightforward and informative tutorial. I appreciate that you did not ramble on and play lame music throughout your video. ✌💜😊🙏
Hi I'm going to stencil on to my guitar case it's leather or fake leather I'm not sure, is acrylic paint ok for this and do I need to protect the paint ? Great video very good tips
We think acrylic paint should work fine. But maybe do a test on the inside flap or on a similar piece of leather. We're not sure how the paint would wear over time if it gets a lot of rubbing from being carried. A clear spray paint top coat might be the solution. J&K
Thank you for this. I’m trying to make a couple gifts and the bleeding has made me have to start over several times and I’ve watched like 15 videos and non said to use less paint and I didn’t even think of using less paint
Thanks! We used Plaid Folk Art Multi-surface Acrylic Craft Paint which works great on wood. For metal you might try one of Plaid's enamel paints, although they are specifically made for ceramic and glass. We have seen some folks use acrylic paint mixed with a sealer like this: amzn.to/2ykckG3 to give better adhesion to metal. But we haven't tried that. Good luck and let us know what you figure out! J&K
You're awesome. Thank u for the tips. I finally feel like I can do this without redoing my project 10 times lol....In the current situation of the world I have nothing but time so that's good... Lol
Great question. The stencil paper does feel a lot like bristol paper. We think that would be fine to use. Here's the how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-stencil/ Cheers, Jennifer & Kitty
Can I use this technique for cardboard? I am applying our company logo to some literature boxes we are making out prospects. Think of a subscription box type of look that I am going for. What type of paint would be best for cardboard?
We think this would probably work for cardboard, but we haven't tried. We suggest doing a test. Don't add any water to the acrylic craft paint. And please let us know if it works! J&K
Hello. Is your stencil on cardboard paper, or was it plastic. I tried to stencil and haven't found a technique. I'm frustrated 😠. I will do it this way to see. I want to get better at it. I have used a roller, spouncer, brush. I didn't know the paint should be dry. I going to do it again. Thank you. 😊

How do you clean paint bleeds? I️ tried sanding a wood sign but then sanded too much in one corner. Another video talked about sealing the wood sign before starting to paint but not sure what’s best option.
We haven't tried using sandpaper. Maybe a little paint thinner? We would test anything first, maybe on the back of the wood, to make sure it worked and didn't stain the wood. Let us know what works! J&K

Sometimes it does smooth out. It depends on the paint and how thick it is. You can also try fine sand paper to smooth it out after it dries, but we suggest trying this first on a scrap piece of wood to make sure you like how it looks. Hope that helps! J&K
Too much paint on sponge for me. It gives the stag an opaque, colored in look, similar to a coloring book picture. In art school, we learned to daub the brush on paper napkins to reduce the amount of paint applied. It gives a nice, shadowy effect, like the stencils used in Historic Williamsburg VA. True stenciling uses darker color around the edges of the stencil, and then lighter, more delicate color in the center. By doing this, you can overlap paint colors within the stencil to give further depth and contrast. That spray mount that someone mentioned is an excellent product. A stencil on wood, needs a light spray of clear polyurethane to preserve the integrity of the stencil, and to protect it. Then, you can use a clear wax finish or a dark wax finish, buffed to a shine. The dark wax gets into the grain of the wood and gives further depth to your stenciled piece.
We haven't tried using an airbrush with a stencil. Perhaps if you used a temporary spray adhesive to hold the stencil down and keep the spray from going under the stencil. Good luck! J&K
That's an option, but not with these stencils. These stencils don't work well for spray painting. If you'd like to stencil with spray paint, choose a stencil with a temporary adhesive on the back to seal the stencil down to the wood. Otherwise the spray can lift up the stencil and spray underneath. J&K
The O'Neil Sisters - I would shade it on the edges and let it blend into the middle to add dimension to the finish look- and use powdered tempera paint mixed with lime and water, it will leave a thicker paint image- which I think looks better than a flat solid image. Thanks for asking♥️🌷.
