Belgian here. The Congo was destabilized specifically by one of our Kings, Leopold II, under his own private company, in an attempt to colonize it (which worked out for him).
Sure can keep it unstable by buying unethical resources on the cheap despite knowing the source requires massive neglect for human rights, though. But it's fine, it's outsourced misery and makes commodities in the homeland cheaper, so.
Not only that, the Miniere du Haut Katanga and Belgian activities in Congo lasted long after Leopold. It was the main source of nuclear material for US nukes in WW2, then US, UK, and French nuclear programs after the war. Later, militias backed by the Belgian Intelligence Services attempted to create a separate Katanga state from Congo to protect those mines, and it culminated in the Siege of Jadotville between Congolese militias and UN forces which became a commemorated event in the Irish military.

"Do you not know how magic works? "would be pretty funny
My parents are from the USSR. A big problem there was that officials constantly miscalculated how many people needed stuff and people had to wait online for basic things like milk and eggs. And also there was a lot of corruption. If you were a KGB agent, you could frame someone for conspiracy against the government and sent to prison. And also they had a housing crisis because the government couldnt build enough housing fast enough and so people had to live in communes. If we had advanced AI that could solve all of this it wouldn't be a problem but that impossible in a world without such technology.
It's better to have a decentralized market system snd just have the government regulate stuff that needs regulating and redistribute money to lower inequality. And also have regulations in our trade agreements and sanction contries that don't comply with our policies.
Whatever you say, CIA.
In America you don't even have to be a CIA agent to SWAT someone and get them killed, or get them arrested on suspicion of terror.
Housing crisis? Been there, done that. Several times.
@@margalwarrior a problem with a cooperative economy is capital. You need capital in order to start a buisness. Shareholders say "okay, I give you that money now and you give me the stock. When your company is valuable enough, I'll sell it and earn that money back."
But in a cooperative-only economy, that investment doesnt really happen. You could have public banks give that money but they would need to make a profit too (that's how a bank increases the money in a CD for example).
Cooperatives are good for industries where people can pool their money and start a small business but they are shit for things like Amazon or Tesla which needs a lot of investment, especially if its foreign investment.
It you want to give more bargaining power to workers, something like co-determination laws would be better.
@@margalwarrior all car companies are subsidized. But yes it's true it has a lot of losses. I was just using it as an example. But hardware companies in general need a lot of capital that a cooperative model may not provide. Unless you want people taking out loans for half a million dollars to start a buisness from a public bank. But no one in their right mind would do that. Not without trying to get backing from investors.
@@margalwarrior subsidies for the government would be good to stimulate growth in already developed industries. So, for example, they may give money to companies that research and manufacture solar cells to help stimulate growth in that sector. But that wouldn't work for startups. For those, you would need something like vc firms angel investors. These are usually people who were lucky enough to acquire a small fortune (or sometimes a bug fortune) who are willing to invest it into a startup. Because they have so much money, they are risk averse. Whereas banks are more selective about who they give a loan to (since it not their money). That I'd most likely why we dont see too many cooperatives even though they are equally or more profitable and effeciant as a regular buisness.
However, with something like a codetermination law, you could get publicly traded companies to give their workers a say in the board of directors while still getting outside investors to give money to you.
Destiny is a pretty good debater.
Just imagine if he actually knew what he was talking about..
Goku casts avadakavra in this debate.
jt3guitar he really isn’t a good debater. He just talks rapidly fast to sound smart, reads articles that spew half truths and if the debate isn’t going anywhere, he’ll talk over and try to egg on his opponent until they get emotional, basically making him win by default. watch the Naked Ape, Dick Masterton debate or even the Tonka one. I hate Tonka and he acted like a manchild, but Destiny was doing just that too him.
@@jadenvanhess2341 He just doesn't understand any of the foundations of his arguments and neither does anyone he debates. There's an old term called elementary, it means understanding the basics. Take for example his title communism(a system of government where the community rules over itself first and foremost) vr capitalism(an economic system of private ownership of the means of production in free markets regulated by supply and demand in a competitive environment) so what he's doing is pitting a political system against a economic system it's either inherently disingenuous or far more likely entirely ignorant.
@@jadenvanhess2341 so go debate him?

The real benefit of this conversation is the admission that Destiny's gauntlet take was wrong.
its still a capeshit movie
i feel like one of the major issues that the younger generations have when assessing different systems like this is somehow tied to a lack of imagination, or inability to mentally project abstract processes through time. so really crucial concepts consistently get written off or substituted with an oversimplified/incorrect idea in its place. i dunno, either way there's gotta be something that's making these kids so eager/receptive to these kind of half-baked utopian circle jerks.
I think it's because they're not having these conversations face to face with people. They're insulated from criticism by social media.
Unironically, it's the internet.
Everything is so immediate and just as quickly forgotten now that we're in the glass age.
The fact that tiktok, Twitter and other hyper short-form content that our generation enjoys so much is simultaneously the by-product and cause of our severely diminished attention span. That feedback loop is made significantly worse thanks to the fact that all these online platforms have a vested interest in encouraging echo chambers to develop.

ok, this guy was much better than the other socialists. I think Destiny actually messed up when he said that capitalism and globalization will make all countries better. While it is true that the economy is not a zero-sum game and the more trading partners a country has the better its economy will be, this is not a linear thing. Exploiting a small country/market like Congo and keeping it poor does not make a dent in the US or other rich countries' exports, but having cheap access to Congo's cobalt will definitely do.
If capitalism was actually fair and every country on earth had the same autonomy over their resources and economic power then Capitalism would most definitely be a zero sum game. How do you want to gain something out of a closed system?
Right now capitalism is not a closed system, it gets input from basically unsovereign countries that serve as cheap labor and resource camps for America. If all those countries weren't just politically unstable resources havens, America would actually have to trade with them, which they can't because the economy is carefully constructed on a foundation of extortion. There's no way in hell that America could afford to import all those resources if they were fairly priced and Congo had a say in the global economy.
So yeah, your iphone would cost as much as a Tesla, your Tesla would cost as much as a house.
Didn’t destiny used to argue against Alt Righters that the ability to produce overseas kept costs for products much cheaper for consumers thus that we can’t keep manufacturing them in the USA otherwise they’d cost a lot of money? Why is he now acting like the marginal increase for a PC would be $300?
He plays to his audience not his actual beliefs
I thought he raised some good points. Capitalist countries destabilize several countries for their own benefit. The question I have is, can we fix this problem within the capitalist system, or does it require a different system?
Thing You Know option b my dude
you can, we just have to destroy all borders
You can't provide "successful" economies with resources without robbing other countries. It the same as some have to starve so that others will live in luxury but on bigger level. This is the reason why some still think capitalism is efficient for they got what is taken from the others of whos existence they probably don't even know. While rich 2% rule the world it's inevitable
I think that problem isn’t unique to capitalist countries at all. If a nation (or actor) can get more powerful at the expense of another, there has to be some incentive or disincentive not to. Capitalist or not. I’d hope that stronger democratic methods of governance with an informed public and sense of global solidarity would discourage governments from doing this by making them unsupported by their public.
@@ataraxia7439 Name any other Incentive to do such a thing, One of the if not the only reason countries Invade other countries is profit Incentive
Why not just advocate for a de-centrally planned economy guided by central standards?
PS: I didn't agree with much of what this dude said but he did a great job and was really entertaining. 10/10 would listen to again.
@Emmerich August If it were practically feasible I expect it'd make a big positive difference initially, but would require a tón more reforms to actually work as intended.
@Emmerich August Because without legislation that applies to every country on Earth, you can't enforce something like this. Beyond that, wealthy people are experts at skirting laws like this, and have the capital to buy the influence they need to subvert or revert these kinds of laws.
Beyond that, these companies are currently based around profit-seeking, which they wouldn't be able to do anymore, and would thus likely lose their drive, and ability to even function.
I'm a socialist so I think all these things can lead to a far better society, but it's sadly not as easy as just outlawing profit-seeking.
@Emmerich August they planned for profit in the long term though. Their growth was also not restricted and Jeff Bezos is rich af in terms of assets and shares and whatnot, so he saw his "profits" rolling in.......I think.

I'm not sure that guy explained the point from the Walmart book very well. The books talks about the way that resources are allocated. In our market economy, resources are allocated among people thru market forces. Within a corporation like Amazon, there are lots and lots of different parts of amazon, and planning instead of a market is used to decide how to allocate resources withing that system. There are critiques of this book tho. I've seen an economist talk about different issues that arise when an entire economy is treated the same way. (This was under the assumption that some computer system could integrate and collect necessary information, which I think is possible (see Paul Cockshott))

We literally have planned whole economies on computers using ai and other technics. If anyone is interested go read Paul Cockshott's book "Towards A New Socialism".
Haven't read the book yet but, how do the predictions offered by this planning compare to the real world?
If it is simply a plan for socialism, it really doesn't stand on its own as proof we can successfully plan economies.
We first need to show that we can successfully predict how things will evolve, how reality reacts to our ideas on such a large scale. Otherwise, it's kind of pie in the sky. Which, on its own is not bad, just don't tout it as a full-fledged solution.

Any surface level examination of US foreign policy over the last century should show you pretty clearly that US policy largely is based on business interests. No it might not specifically be written or dictated by the boards of these companies, but when you have people like the Dulles brothers owning massive stock in United Fruit and then doing what they did in Latin America.....well......
It may not be possible to "maximize happiness" through either system, as both have within them the very mechanisms that undermine the only things that bring happiness. Communism undermines the individual's quest for self-actualization, the pursuit of fulfilling one's purpose. Capitalism also undermines these things for all except, perhaps, for those who have enough wealth or privilege that they don't have to put self-actualization and the pursuit of one's purpose on hold to meet their basic survival needs, but even the wealthy aren't happy under capitalism because their wealth afford them everything they could ever want, so naturally they're NEVER FUCKING HAPPY.
Denmark, on the other hand, is said to have the happiest people on Earth. They have a VERY socialized system, in which individuals are still allowed to pursue their own goals and dreams. Scandinavian-style socialism is clearly the best of both worlds; I don't see why this is so hard to understand. People like Bernie Sanders have been talking about this for years, and that's why to me Sanders is the actual centrist. Americans are so fucking lost in the right-wing weeds compared to the rest of the world that many of them think people like Hillary are communists. It's *fucking absurd.*

Only difference between them is that capitalism dangles a carrot on a stick that's tied to your head and promises that the faster you work, the harder you exert yourself, the sooner you'll possibly, maybe, eventually get your carrot, whereas communism just beats you with the stick.

Destiny got both greedy and distributed the wealth in this debate
As a business analytics major who deals with the ai that determines demand. It’s extremely complex to just have an AI doing it, even with the technology we have today, and it’s also nearly impossible to perfectly measure demand.
Destiny destroys his own argument for capitalism here! There is a reason so many goods are manufactured in multiple countries across multiple supply chains around the world. Cheap labor and resources. There is a reason America "spreads democracy," and fights communists around the world. Ensuring corporations have access to that cheap labor and resources. Markets are written and regulated by a central authority. In our global trade system, that central authority is dominated by the US government. When people talk about geo politics or geo strategic interests, ultimately it comes down to protecting the advantages they have in these international agreements.
I don't know if Destiny deliberately dances away from these arguments or he is unable to make the connection in his mind. Either way it's quite disappointing but shows the power of think tanks like the CATO institute.
Destiny basically denies 3rd world exploitation saying "idk if we do it for resources/ cheap labor" and thinks he won the debate. If not for those things then WTF else would it be for genius?
Exactly my thought. He had a fat brain fart there. America needs silicon and cobalt and lithium etc to build computers and shit, otherwise it does not work. You measure using quantity consumed versus price per unit... this isn't hard to understand, and it also makes all forms of planning, however cleverly designed, insufficient as resource-allocation mechanisms.
Janos Kornai, a Hungarian former central planner himself, has written at length about how planning cannot be made to work
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A1nos_Kornai
His most important book on the subject is called simply "The Socialist System" and was originally published around 1992 in English iirc.
"The materialist conception of history starts from the proposition that the production of the means to support human life and, next to production, the exchange of things produced, is the basis of all social structure; that in every society that has appeared in history, the manner in which wealth is distributed and society divided into classes or orders is dependent upon what is produced, how it is produced, and how the products are exchanged. From this point of view, the final causes of all social changes and political revolutions are to be sought, not in men's brains, not in men's better insights into eternal truth and justice, but in changes in the modes of production and exchange.” Fredrick Engels, Socialism: utopian and scientific.
The actual debate would be
Destiny: Amazon might be excellent at internal planning and logistics but it responds to external demand of its customers. Its ability to deliver things hinges on being constantly updated by customer inputs that the book you read does not address. Thats why it probably stopped loading its Warehouses with whatever the most popular of 2009 was in 2015. I have heard nothing in your argument to address how to resolve that customer input level
Guy: We can estimate roughly what users would use to achieve levels of acceptable data inputs into Amazon's logistics planning to keep things at a reasonable level and that's enough for me because i find it morally preferable to what we have now.
Paul Cockshott, professor of comp sci, has both found the amount of calculations required to run a centrally planned economy and produced a model of the software that can simulare the economy of Sweden on not too powerful hardware. Destiny is getting his arguments from Heyak who was writing before computers really existed.
It can't be calculated not because of the vastness of the data set but the ambiguity of the input parameters. And it's simply authoritarian no matter how you twist it. Someone controls the algorithm, the computer and decides how society ought to look like. Billions of independent actors regardless of their inefficiency are perfect in their autonomy which is a more important factor.
Rassweiler says making all of the iPhone's parts in the U.S. would push the price of the iPhone's components from $190 to around $600. “If the materials alone are costing $600,” says Rassweilier, “it stands to reason, that same iPhone could cost, perhaps, $2,000 at retail.”

Bring on the writers of The People's Republic of Walmart. I'm confident they will come on if invited.
The Biden ball gargling is getting really tired Steven
silly steve dipping into the feels over reals based arguments over and over
Lol? do you understand how magic works?
Wait why not just nationalise the food housing and healthcare markets if that is all you cared about everyone reciving... that is a much smaller and more resonable part of the economy to plan than the entire time
Oh my God DESTINY is such a tankie for capitalism, "we don't need an underclass for our capitalist system to continue". Meanwhile the gold in his computer is mined by children with their bare hands in the global South, and will end up soldered off in a late stage capitalism hellscape somewhere in India by essentially homeless children.
What the fuck destiny you need to think these things out.
Powakatsi go watch that movie now.
Oh yes the pseudo moralist stance :D their situation was of course better before capitalism then? Oh wait, it wasn't. Their standart of living is increasing harder than anywhere else on the world
@@Gecko_Papa um. I'm not taking a pseudo moralist stance. He acts like he's never seen or heard of child labor in gold mines in South America before. My stance is that he is apparently, UNAWARE of where electronics components come from.
I do believe as a human being that it is morally reprehensible.
But I don't necessarily think that capitalism is too blame, but certainly empire is.
@@Gecko_Papa and their situation was different before capitalism, not worse not better.
Spoilin' Steve back at it again talking about how the Tinman wanted to hurt Thanatos, smh.
I love how he glosses over his magic algorithm that will be more efficient then the price mechanism. What magic can you use to convert the worlds economy , manufacturing and distribution when said systems only exist because of capitalism. The magic puzzle piece that would be so more efficient lol
Exactly
I love how Destiny pretends like somehow the America tech market could continue working without catastrophic disruptions if they'd stop extorting essential resources out of the Congo.
National socialism >communism >capitalism
lol at the minor points Destiny gets overly dramatic about and raises his voice over. Liberals are bizarre
Whenever destiny doesn't know something "this is really complicated"
@Blubber so Destiny knows everything that isn't complicated is what you are saying?
The infinity stones killed Stark not because of what he used them for, but because using all of them at once like that was too much power for a human body to handle. Hulk was filled with gamma, that's why he survived. Thanos is an eternal had spent centuries augmenting himself.
Greetings from Germany.
As long as our "debt counter" runs closer to black numbers im quite satisfied over here.
Walmart/amazon did not start off making what they sell. And even today they do not innovate anything new. They let other sellers create and if that idea takes off they’ll buy the idea and rebrand.
I really enjoyed this conversation
Destiny planned an economy in this debate.
