      Hey Destiny, can't say that I can grab any Profs for you but at the very least, from communicating with many Economics Professors for various conferences at a prominent University, they generally prefer the term "command economy" to "socialism" as the latter has been watered down in terms of concrete understanding from the reasons you've pointed out. They tended to define it less as workers but as the government possessing the means of production. They do mention that no such economy has ever been purely capitalist or socialist but has mixed economies with varying degrees of direct government intervention (less leaning more capitalist). In any case, I would also mention that it isn't as simple as "democratization of the means of prod" either since the government has the ability to alienate that control from the people to varying degrees (ie electoral college as a more well-known/understood analogy). Also, the def you gave at the beginning of your convo w/Econoboi sounded more like Communism. I believe an apt distinction is Socialism is the republican democracy to a Communist's direct democracy. Hopefully that sheds some light on the actual definitions (though I wouldn't anticipate many would be able to distinguish them in conversation).

      @@JoshuaG-USC.EconomicsAssoc Yeah it's a shame, Destiny seems to have no idea what socialism is beyond some mad shit on Twitter. Communist larpers on Twitter do not equal socialism. But it's fun when he uses the term Mott and Bailey to describe socialists and then constructs one using those same Twitter weirdos to bring down any movements calling themselves socialist that lean towards economic equality. He needs to accept that the emptiest vessels will always make the loudest sounds in all walks of life, not just socialism or communism.
      He makes me so mad when he takes the ideas of braindead morons on Twitter as socialism. I don't know a single socialist that understand what socialism is that says they want to kill landlords. Most of us just want social housing, which would undermine the power landlords have over the people.

      Well she has a point... rape and sexual abuse are typically acts of desperation based in scarcity and rejection-based resentment. Sound reasoning suggests abundance results in the opposite, even if we disproportionately hear about abundance based sexual misconduct cases in the media because they involve high profile individuals that get more attention. We can't forget that we're never exposed to 99.9% of rape cases , of which probably 90% are scarcity-based. She ain't a dummy but she has the voice of one.

    I'm a religious watcher of H3 and I'm in the H3 discord and I attempted to get people to justify their moral claims about billionaires and they just couldn't do it.
    They said "billionaires existing is immoral". This to me, means there's absolutely no world where billionaires can exist because they've given no context at all.
    I used Ethan's own argument of "if there's sufficient safety nets and you're still able to be a billionaire then is it moral to be one?" They replied with yes.
    I then said so it's not immoral to be a billionaire then and the ad homs ensued.

    • @jkcrawl
      @jkcrawl 9 месяцев назад +15

      Thats weird, because rhe answer is pretty simple.
      The reason why being a billionaire is immoral is because it's hoarding resources for absolutely no reason.
      All these CEOs that give themselves raises while the wages of their workers remain stagnant is immoral.
      Most jobs don't pay a living wage, while there's billionaires going into space like it's a vacation trip to the Bajamas.
      I'm not anti-capitalism, but there's absolutely no reason why someone needs a billion dollars, I don't care how "hard" they work.

    • @maxerweller22
      @maxerweller22 9 месяцев назад +10

      @@jkcrawlthe CEO's/owners of these businesses have a stake in the company. Essentially, they assume all the risk. If the business goes under, they are are ultimately responsible, not the workers. Additionally, the labor that people are providing for pay on a given job is directly proportional to the scarcity of that skill. So if you have a factory making wheel hubs, the press operator shouldn't be making boat loads of cash because their labor isn't as valuable as someone who has the ability to run a company successfully (much more difficult and requires more knowledge and skill).

    • @jkcrawl
      @jkcrawl 9 месяцев назад +8

      @@maxerweller22 Like I said, none of that justifies hoarding multiple lifetimes worth of resources.
      Everybody has a stake in the company they work for and billionaires are much more likely to recover if a company fails.
      Every career you get into is a risk, whether it's financial, psychological, or physical.
      The most dangerous job in America according to the bureau of labor statistics are loggers. Do you know where billionaires place? They're not even in the top 25.
      As far as skill, there's no firm system in place that pays according to skill. Not to mention that what determines skill difficulty is very subjective. We've seen this in play in real time when Deere tried to get white collar workers to do production jobs and fell on their faces.
      The logging worker I mentioned only averages about 45k per years. The annual salary of a John Deere Production worker is close to 60k and as someone who works for Deere, I can tell you it's a lot less dangerous and requires less skill in a lot of different positions (for example, I make around 60k - not including overtime - and all I do is dip cores and about 30% of the time I'm just standing around waiting for cores from the machine operators).
      I'm sorry, you're just not going to convince me that the "skill" and "risk" of being a CEO justifies hoarding multiple comfortable lifetimes worth of resources. Like I said, there's absolutely, positively, no reason why any individual deserves that much money when the majority of the world live sin poverty - It's simple pure greed.

    • @maxerweller22
      @maxerweller22 9 месяцев назад +9

      @@jkcrawl So what happens when the company goes under? Should those workers be liable for the debt? The point is that the risk for these billionaires is significantly higher than for the workers. Sure there is always risk for workers but there are levels to the risk. To pretend otherwise is insane. You are also conflating different types of risk (physical and financial) with comparing loggers to ceo's. Lastly, if there shouldn't be billionaires, I want you to explain where the line is and why it should be there. Not just a subjective simple answer of "well its immoral". If the reward for hard work in creating new companies, jobs, innovating, creating economic stability isn't heavily rewarded, we wouldn't have all the nice things we have now such as the smartphone you are probably using. I think making people's lives better should be heavily rewarded.

    • @jkcrawl
      @jkcrawl 9 месяцев назад +8

      @@maxerweller22 Do you have the slightest clue of how much a billion is?
      Tom Cruise is the highest paid actor in Hollywood at 600 million, I'd think that is more than enough money for both of us, we can agree on that at least, right?
      Elon Musk is worth 263 BILLION.
      It would take 438 Tom Cruises to equal one Elon Musk and there's absolutely no part of you, like not one inch that thinks "Okay... That's a little too much"? If you can't see how that insanely ridiculous amount of wealth for one individual while the people that work under them could go into debt just by things as simple as car problems, then I'm not sure what else to say.
      There's a reason why billionaires are the ones being singled out.
      If you don't think pure greed is immoral then I think we just disagree on a fundamental ethical level.
      As far as conflating risks, I'm not sure what you're point is. You made a point that billionaires take a risk of ending up broke as a way to justify why they deserve billions, I pointed out that day to day worker risk more than that on a regular basis and are still broke.
      So to answer your question, I think being a millionaire is more than enough to be considered "heavily reward". So now I ask you, when do you think it's too much? At what point do the laborers who risk not only their financial stability, but physical and mental health start getting reward enough to just simply live comfortably?
      Also, there is no "economic stability" when most jobs don't even pay a living wage.

He's saying that the state socializing existing companies isn't socialism, but when the other dude uses a very Destiny tactic and says "Yeah, but is it capitalism? Capitalism is individual/private ownership of the means of production.
    Socialism is collective ownership of the means of production.
    Communism is collective control of distribution.
    This is why people often will say, "Oh that social spending program is socialism." What they mean is that it's communist because most socialists are actually communists but they identify as socialists because it's less scary and because they don't know what either one means. Now technically it's not communist to have social spending because the government doesn't completely control distribution but it is blending into the spectrum of communism because that is a % of collective control (through government) of distribution by taking your taxes and redistributing it.
    The US is obviously a mixed system but at what point do you argue it is no longer capitalist? Is it simply a matter of taxation percentages? If you have over a 50% taxation rate and most of that money is being redistributed do you then start calling that a communist country but with capitalist elements?

      Because every single socialist has to balance the beliefs that capital is both incredibly useful and exploitative , but they refuse to accept that the only way you can describe it as exploitation is through a primitive form of accounting based in pure maths.
      The only way the maths can work is to reduce the system to one entity owner (government) or at the firm. Given humans produce network systems this gives rise to power laws and hence inequality the firm method won’t fix inequality, and the government requires totalitarian practices. Given capitalism doesn’t have this accounting contradiction. To compete the socialist have to do capitalism with extra steps.

I find it hard to believe anyone in the media actually cares about russel brand doing bad things in the past, because those same people in the media, help to cover up epsteins client list, and discredit his victims that came forward.

    I've rented out property to people a lot, and in my experience, renters tend to be some of the most selfish, self centered, people who will do anything to rip you off.
    We had one renter complain about a leaky pipe, so we hired a plumber to look at it. We told the renter the exact time and date the plumber would bd there. The plumber shows up and the renter is no where to be seen so the plumber left. We rescheduled and this time thd plumber shows ip but the rent is no where to be seen so he calls me and I showed up with the spare keys to let him in. We found the renter in the livingroom high as a kite out of his mind. Apparently he did the same thing the last time, got high and was too paranoid to open the door. This time he screamed at us. Claiming we didnt inform him about the plumber (we did, both on the phone and in writting which he signed, he just forgot because he got high.)
    Another time, a renter ditched out on the rent and left all her crap in the house. Took us two weeks to clean out all ghose cloths, rotted food, trash and junked furniture. 1 year later she showed up demanding her stuff back like we're some kind of charity storage facility or something.
    And thdn all the renters who just demolished our rent houses and who refuse to vacate the houses after not paying rent for months at a time. We have never once had a deceng renter.

    The UK's National Health Service (NHS) is not something to be aspired to, instead look to the socialised healthcare systems of other European Countries as they have much better
    outcomes.
    Also note, the British approach to healthcare still allows private insurance and private healthcare. Both of which are growing in popularity as the NHS is starting to buckle.

      Socialism is when public roads. I think the simplist socialist ideal is to prevent the exploitation of labor for the gain of the owner class. The best way to do that would be to make the worker the owner in some way. Making the government or community the owner will definitely result is similar abuse of labor for those the society is willing to throw under the bus, like farmers. Similar to the 2 wolves and 1 sheep vote on what to eat problem. The government ownership doesn't remove the incentive to over work and under pay, it just moves it to a higher level, which is why people call the Soviets state capitalists sometimes.

    This guy really likes to use "right?" to try to cement his point without merit. And Destiny is right, this tactic of soft and hard definitions has been used over and over. Recently we've seen this used with Fascism, Socialism, Communism, etc. Words no longer have meaning and that is an insidious political strategy in itself. Slap someone with a soft definition of Fascist (they're a Republican) and then use the hard definition to describe what they want. Same with Socialism, same with Communism and on and on. It is a tactic that is degrading political discourse and the only way forward I can see is trying to force people into staking out a definition and not allowing them to do this.
