  • In this video, I show how I pollinate my Parodia cactus flowers to produce seed pods. It starts from having cactus flowers until the seed pods are formed and ready for picking. Finally, I extract the seeds from the cactus seed pods and store them in a sealed bag.

Very nice harvest. I love those kinds of cactus. So pretty. Mine aren't doing so well but I may have gotten bad ones to start with. As for seed pods taking months, my Gymno fredirchi has 3 fruits and they are still green. Seems like it's been more than a month and it's taking forever. I keep them inside because I don't want something to happen to the fruits outside where they were. The cactus bodies have turned green from that. They used to both be pretty red ones. Hope they will rippen soon so I can harvest and put them back out to color up.

Parodia cacti in this genus are very self-fertile and looking at your stigmas they have pollen on them most likely from insect activity. Try to cross them as soon as they have opened when the stigma is clean of pollen to increase your chances of an actual cross and not self-pollination. Nice video

Planting cactus seeds is a little different. You have to keep the soil moist all the time and keep the humidity very high. You can achieve this by covering your pot with a clear plastic. Seeds need a lot of moisture and some heat (not direct sun) to germinate. 🙂
