    Once the walls are up just hold the rafter on the end of the wall(clamps/nail) to the desired pitch that you want and trace it out on the rafter, use that rafter as a template.

      I got most of information. I’m stuck on this. I want to make a shed. 3 ft deep I want to add metal roof. At what pitch the roof have to be? Or can u explain so I can find out how much back wall from front wall height difference is?

    I made a building years ago, still stands today but I didn't cut the bird mouths I just used hurricane ties and worked great

    great video. i would add this roof would need to be a pitch of at least 4 / 12 to accept shingles, alot of people building sheds shingle too flat of a roof pitch because they dont know any better.

      Great idea, but you can use other roofing materials on smaller slopes.

    Like you mentioned in the beginning of the video, is it possible to install a roof without the seat cuts? I don't have the tools available to make those cuts and I am building a small shed for a local highschool. One wall is 8 feet tall and the other wall is 7 feet tall.

    Reminds me of how the ancient Greeks used to do full size layouts on the flat stone floor of not only to derive unknown dimensions, but also to creat a full size template for the subtle elongated (entasis) curves of the full size columns.

    Greg- how do I reduce and or remove the side-to-side sway on a 3-sided shed leaving the front end open" it,s a 12x16 shed with a 3;12 pitch I haven,t installed the rafters yet - which will follow your design provided in your video; hope you will advise, thank,s PATRICK.P

      I can't provide structural engineering advice, but can suggest using some additional lateral bracing or shear panel in hopes of solving your problem.

    To build the front and back walls that aren’t shown in the thumbnail would you keep them the same height as the shortest wall or angle them? Would have to cut each stud to match the roof angle I assume.

    Can anyone give an answer, making a horizontal roof with 5 x 30 cm wood boards / joists (30 cm being vertically) would the boards in 5 meters length bend from it's own weight and snow ? And what is the max spacing allowed between boards, is 70 cm enough ?

    What kind of distance can you effectively span with a 2x12 for a single slope roof? Would you use a 24”oc to support a R-panel roof?

    im using rafter hangers. The first 4 are pretty tight i had to bang them in with hammer, is that really bad? Should i make the others loser?

    I think this video is like that core math they teach these days where they try to use up an entire sheet of paper for each problem and make things more complicated than they actually are.

    The problem with shed roof like this is that you end up with a shed roof like this to look at for eternity. Your gable roof videos are so clear there is no need to compromise :-)

      I understand the aesthetic appeal of a gable roof is much more attractive but a flat roof as such has more uses as for things as solar without all the penetrations for attachments as needed for a gable roof. Rooftop deck\patio or gazebo; a few things that I would accept in trade for the aesthetics.

    Depending on the height difference on the wall, how do you know if you should cut 1/4” per foot or 1/2” per foot? Is there a method of doing this or a building code that regulates this?

      It's going to depend on what type of roofing materials and snow loads most of the time. You can check with your local building department to answer your questions.

    I am looking for a good way to make a new roof over an existing shed with concrete block walls.
    Front wall is about 2 blocks higher as the back wall.
    But I also want to increase the angle of the roof.
    Now it has approx. The same as in your example, but my shed has a span of 4.5 m. And a lot of debris stayed on the roof which caused the previous roof to bend and break after severe leaking and rotting.
    I think I can work with this.

      I would think you could add more blocks to raise one side of shed higher, to solve your problem.

    Would you use kiln-dried or tanalised timber for the rafters?

      I depends on where you are located, but most of the time you would use construction standard lumber. Check with your local lumber yard for more information.

      Seat cuts will work better, but it might not be a big deal on smaller roofs.

      I can't disagree with that. Really low slopes like a 1/4 inch rise per foot seems like it wouldn't need a seat cut.

      @@gregvancom in order to increase the contact surface, I'm planning to put expanding foam or piece of wood in the space that is without contact. Then metal corner attachments on both sides to keep rafter in place. What do you think
