    I love the Star Trek minidress! I think the single-leg wrap mechanism looks innovative! You should make a new updated video now that Junkball has featured you!

    I always thought they looked cute. I'd wear one. I'm pretty sure the strangeness is due to it being a prop rather a real article of clothing.

    A part of me kind of wishes they'd preserved the skant beyond the first 2 seasons. Seeing that the crew started wearing collared uniformed from Season 3 onward, I wonder how the skant would've looked with a collar and how some of the TNG cast and background characters would've looked with it on.

      I once heard that Deanna wore a seasons 3+ collared version in a comic or graphic novel, but I haven't read those and don't know which one(s). Maybe something worth looking into?

    Your thread did match the same used to stitch the yoke piping. So yeah very good thread match for sewing this monster.

    I’m so glad that these weren’t the standard Uniform for The Next Generation.
    I’d be humiliated to wear one of those as a Guy.
    I love those Burgundy Jackets with White Color and Black Pants that the TOS Wore in nearly every movie they were in.

    Great video. Thank you for the detailed review of these garments. I both love Star Trek and want to try my hand at making my own clothes. I thought the skant would be a pretty easy project to tackle; I was absolutely mistaken with my assumption!

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
      These skants aren't THAT hard to make - just very weird and unconventional and difficult to wrap your brain around at first.
      That said, there ARE far easier projects to start with, if you're a novice sewer.

      The original Star Trek mini skirts where sewn together weird as well.

    I wonder if this is the onscreen skant worn by Denise Crosby in the final scene of "Encounter at Farpoint", or if it is more likely the one worn by regular TNG background extra (and usual stand-in for Gates McFadden) Lorine Mendell (AKA Lt. Diana Giddings; AKA the tall, pretty redheaded crew member often seen in Engineering, and occasionally on the bridge and in the corridors, throughout Season 1). Perhaps they are one in the same?

    • @ObsessiveCostumingDude
      @ObsessiveCostumingDude  6 лет назад +1

      Without any evidence for any specific wearer(s), my guess would be that this was an extra's skant. We didn't get to see many skants in the show, but most of the ones we DID see were gold women's skants.

    Please review a TOS scant if possible. Perhaps even a green Kirk tunic if the design is interesting enough?

    Re: color. For cosplay, is it best to make the costume in the actual color or the color it appears to be on the screen?

    • @ObsessiveCostumingDude
      @ObsessiveCostumingDude  3 года назад +7

      That's an entirely subjective issue ...
      Personally, I prefer to stick as closely as I can to the original, screen-used color(s) whenever possible.
      But some people prefer to go for a more general representation of the color as it looked in the show(s)/movie(s), or at least the color they mentally associate with it.
      Other people either don't care and/or are just willing to settle for the most convenient fabric and color they can find.
      Bottom line is that it's YOUR costume, so whatever makes you happy! :)

    I was wondering, do the zippers have to be in two or would a continuous make sense, ie opening up the full front to get into it? I guess the clips still have to be at the side to hold it...

    • @ObsessiveCostumingDude
      @ObsessiveCostumingDude  2 года назад

      One continuous zipper wouldn't work because of the sharp angle where the seams meet at the yoke.
      Maybe if the seam had been slightly curved, like the "saddle shoulders" on many of the TOS season 1 tunics, it could've been one long zipper, but with the panels and closures being positioned where they are, it needs to be two separate zippers.

    ...The camera really doesn't like the gold spandex, apparently.

    • @ObsessiveCostumingDude
      @ObsessiveCostumingDude  5 лет назад

      Nope ... either I, my camera, or both of us have an extraordinarily hard time focusing on deeply-saturated, solid-color fabrics. I've filmed some stuff with cotton, shirting, and suiting fabrics, and it nearly always works fine. But I'm a dummy when it comes to cameras! My wife's the talented one in that arena.

    So much velcro... neat! wasn't velcro designed by NASA for space missions to keep items affixed due to lack of gravity?

      I think the studio lighting rendered the shirt the "proper" color. like in TOS with the gold shirts that were green but the lighting used to bring out tones had a similar effect on those?

    The Jameson Admiral had huge pads too. What the hell man. Maybe they're breast pads re-purposed as shoulder pads. It would make sense. LOL

      Nah, they really seem to be custom-made. Maybe I'll do a video soon on how the make them. (They're in a couple of the sewing tutorials on my STCG blog, but maybe a video tutorial would be helpful, too?)

    Is there a company where I can purchase a high quality Star Trek costume? I’m interested in just about whatever I can dress in…

    • @ObsessiveCostumingDude
      @ObsessiveCostumingDude  Год назад

      I'm primarily a DIY guy so I'm not familiar with vendors who offer finished STAR TREK costumes.
      I know there are a few people in the community who do custom commissions (often using my sewing patterns) and seem to do good work.
      I suggest asking in the "Star Trek Costume Group" on Facebook. :)
