  • Wow this one really has been a LONG time coming.
I originally started work on this new updated version over 2 years ago.
And I have spent pretty much all of this year working hard to get it done.
This project honestly had really burned me out. But its pretty much over now.
I have a new completed build and these three videos I'm uploading cover its development.
But its still not quite over. There are still going to be some more changes in a tweaked newer version. But I will go over that in a later video.
Part 2 will be out shortly. I recorded the voice over originally to be a single part but it ended up being a 40 minute video which I felt was too long. So its been split into 2 parts. I just need to finish editing everything together. So give me a few days.
Part 3 will be out shortly after that, where I go over in more detail the hardware and some of the layout of the software.

This is unbelievable! I could see this expanding in the future to include actual sensors like temperature, humidity, pressure, altitude, etc. All small enough to be able to fit in future builds (and easier as things continue shrinking). Bravo!

In my >40 years of electronic product design, this is the coolest looking thing I've ever seen, especially the scans for life signs and the metallurgical scans. Your work is definitely inspirational ! But, please just sit back and look at it for a while here and there, and breath !
And to think I came for a reflow oven and left with a Tricorder that's what, ~300 years ahead of its time?

So here's my question/thought: if you put a bluetooth receiver/transmitter in the chassis and just assigned ID codes to each of the buttons, could you offload the actual graphics displays to a parent program on a PC? I imagine this would be a cool way to do it if you wanted to customize the display for a long-running project, IE a summer camp where the kids were "scanning" different things in realtime and the PC provided imagery based on the tricorder's GPS location.
Would that make the build easier to replicate? Could you hypothetically forgo any wiring between the two sections altogether by putting a bluetooth in each half and letting the PC handle communication between them as well?

Mangy_Dog... This is just frigging awesome! I mean, I have issues drawing stickmen. I have absolutely no interest, not to mention expertise and patience, to do something like this myself. I don't have a single pet project, or enjoy working around the house, and I have only a vague idea of which side of a hammer is the striking end (thank God for RUclips videos). But I am absolutely fascinated at watching others, real craftsmen/women/folks such as yourself, work their craft. You are my new hero. I felt your pain and frustration as you described each phase of this project. I love Star Trek for the stories, but the tech absolutely helps push the stories and make them more believable. You and your ilk are amazing. Thank you for this video. Nothing short of amazing!

I think it's time for us to start developing the technology to make actual working tricorders. I mean, I don't expect a handheld device to detect neutrinos or read someone's genetic code from 3 feet away anytime soon, but I think it wouldn't be that difficult to register heart beat, respiration rate, and body temperature from a small distance. And as for other sensors, a Geiger counter could be added, and maybe stuff like a carbon monoxide detector, decibel meter, rudimentary spectrum analysis, stuff like that. Over time, more and more different kinds of sensors could be developed and added as technology advances and scales down.

This is the coolest thing I have seen! Having seen what you have created, I must ask, there's a custom prop I've been trying to get made for years and haven't found anyone to be willing to tackle it. I'm sure you're familiar with Ghostbusters, some years ago on Xbox and PlayStation they came out with Ghostbusters the video game. Very awesome game by the way, but one of the most notable things in this game was a new version of the PKE meter. So hopefully here's the beginning of an awesome project and dialogue between you and me. I've been looking for someone to build me a PKE meter based on that game, that actually possesses a EMF and a few other scanners that are generally found in cell phones. Let me know if there's something you'd be willing to tackle and what kind of estimate on price. Obviously I know estimates of subject to change but if it's something you're willing to tackle let me know.

Why not using a Raspberry Pie, with all Sensors u can find and buy. And then make a Real Tricorder ?
Would be only some Programming to combine it, and then create a dashboard, and some buttons. U can measure the heat of a body to look if someone is ill and so...

I intend for this to be received as a friendly, constructive critique: You might want to consider editing-out the heavy breathing of your narration in future videos. Very distracting, especially when that's how the video begins and then continues throughout.
Love the build though! I've bemoaned the fakeness of the on-screen tricorder props for years and you're taking the right steps in the right direction.

    • @MD_Builds
      @MD_Builds  2 года назад +1

Yeah its an issue... The trouble is I use my breaths to time some of my edits and cuts (i stutter), and i have a cheap condenser mic that really REALLY likes to pick up my breathing. After doing the billion and one edits for the voice over, i tend to neglect removing the breath intakes. But yeah I understand. youre not the only one thats made that comment. :) And I feel the same.
