I just bought some turquoise rainbows and they are small and not as bright as i know they can be but i still like them and am excited to see when they hit their color potential. I actually added rainbows to my aquarium because of you videos so thank you Bob!

This was my favorite intro. Love the Austin powers music. Boesemanis are awesome, you're right about bad color at fish stores. Mine got huge quickly and colored up very nice.
I lol'ed at the intro, that was great! I actually have surprisingly deep colored, beautiful Bosemani's that I got from a now closed local fish store. I wish I knew where mine were bred. These guys are my favorite fish, they are the stars of my tank and are reaching 4 years old and still going strong. And yes, they will hurt a fly, because every time I catch a fly (small ones because they have narrow throats) I pop it in the tank and my rainbow's are always the ones that snatch it up first.
I am happy how you emphasized the importance of individual breeders in this video. For the best color and to keep species going! I hope you stick with your plan to breed them! I love to see the process of breeding any fish and the raising of them!

Just started in the hobby and have a 75 gallon. I was originally going to make an African Cichlid tank as I believed this to be the only larger, super colorful fresh water species you could keep was from the initial searches online.
Thankfully, I came across the rainbow fish and I really like them a lot! I’ve been stocking my tank now with makes and would love to see a follow up video on best practices and species care for these.

Great fish man! Been keeping rainbows for a couple years now. Just started watching you tube recently. Guess I didn't realize or think about the aquatic world on here.

I bought 10 over the last 2 years from Imperial Tropicals in Florida. The coloration on these guys is even more intense than those in your video. You can see a recent picture as the header on my channel....
there's a fish store close to me and it has a couple really pretty little boesmani rainbows and they've been their for a while, but I don't have a big enough tank for them!!

Very nice! I just bought 10 juveniles. I have a 75 gallon tank outside in the front yard, and so i think with the direct sunlight and constant mild weather, they should be doing fine. It's a tank that is part of a hydroponic system.
They look amazing in sun light.
they are the regular pet shop breed, so probably not as colorful as yours, but I keep hoping.
I don't know if I was fed a load of crap but I got small ones and I was told they would color up as they mature is this true or did I get duped

It's not just the blue to orange but there's an iridescence or some sort of effect that reflects and shows all different colors in the blue part and middle, really beautiful.
Mine look more the ones in your 40 gallon. Have no idea who the supplier was though. Females look better than I thought, but I still wouldn't bother with them. Lot of money and tank space on a drabber fish.
They definitely don't look as nice as juveniles, though the ones at Aquatek always have at least some color. Like you said, patience is rewarded, though it's worth mentioning the time it takes varies by species and even individual.
Wide variety of water parameters in the wild yes but Rainbows prefer hard water. My pH is 7.5. 80 sounds high. Keep my tank at 76.
Yes they are endangered but I thought all collection was banned, especially given how much they are bred. If collecting isn't banned yet, it should be.
Potential drawbacks - They are prone to bacterial infections if they get injured. Went years without knowing about this or having to deal with it and now over the past year it's been happening off and on. Be mindful with the decor as having too much is what caused by initial issues. Of course they can always bump into the glass. Second, they have a hierarchy and will chase each other and go into rituals and in rare cases can inflict injury to each other, though I can't say I have confirmed observation of the latter. More likely they can run into things while they are chasing each other. More individuals obviously helps here.
And yes they definitely need lots of swimming space and 4 foot long tank minimal. They can be very hyper and active like you said.
I have Bosemani, Turquoise, Emerald, Yellow, Millennium, and Praecox. I personally recommend and as many colors/species as possible. They look great together and mine are doing great.

yeah I have got very nice one from pet shops. The coloration of these fish has more to do with diet and environment than genetics.

Hi Steen, I keep rainbows 4 months and feed them once a day but one of the local breeders told me to get them to their biggest possible size you need to feed them at least two times a day, what you think?

I have had many rainbowfish over the years but now i only have two left. It seems like they are getting parasites or something? I have trouble finding any info on diseases/parasites they can get. It seems like over the years I have noticed one fish after another get a strange bump or scratch looking sore slightly about the pectoral fin. then eventually that fish will die. they seem normal other than the spot and only one will get sick at a time. do you think this is something or just old age? TIA

I know there is a wide variety of Rainbow fish but the Boesemani is my favorite, I threw a few into a 125 gallon African Cichlid tank maybe 15 years ago as dither fish and they soon became one of my favorite fish in the tank. I have been in and out of the hobby since the early 90s, many tanks and fish have come and gone, I currently have a 75 gallon African Cichlid tank and a group of Rainbowfish I bought called Goyder River Rainbows, I like them but they aren't Bosemani.

Hello there mr Bob, I just started my own rainbow fish aquarium and I love them. But where or how can I get a more " quality " fish like you have from Gary . I live in the Netherlands and I already joined the rainbow fish club ( I R G) . We have a Wholesales company which also has a distribution center in Florida. Where can they order best for me, and then I hope that these fish can come in shipment they have scheduled to the Netherlands. They normally deliver the " standard" fish, very nice but when I get the opportunity I will get some premium Rainbows. Gary Lange was in the Netherlands as a speaker this year but then I was not into Rainbows so I missed that opportunity.
