The person who is doing funded it with his own money to start with, the people also work building the homes. There is no profit margin. Take the time to look up the real story and be impressed.

The project received over 12 million dollars in government funding. The houses reportedly cost $40K to build. That government funding alone could build 300 tiny homes. Entrepreneur is code for getting rich using other peoples money. I can't see where he's got any of his own money in the project. He got government to fund the building, and gets to collect the rent on buildings that the government built.

The only time I can see a car being functionally necessary for work is if you have to move between sites (e.g. plumber, home services, moving between multiple schools during the day). Even then, if there's a payload (e.g. tools), as long as the payload is under a few kilos, its reasonably managable to use a panier or trailer on a bike; meaning that it's a matter of choice for the employee whether they want to pay more for a slight improvement to their QoL.
Note, there may be additional use cases, but that's the statistically common one. Plus, if you have to move materials or equipment, the vehicle should be provided by the company really (I know thats not the reality, but a stronger workforce/unions would go a long way to improve that).

Trailers are just tiny homes hahah but it makes people feel better to say they live in a tiny home and not a trailer. Its the same

I recently filmed a segment at an upcoming tiny homes village in Arkansas (USA) and expressed the same concerns you have here, which is, why is this being built out in the middle of nowhere? It was so far away from the city core. They tell me that they have an agreement with the local transit authority to have bus service service the community. I understand it's hard to put up a tiny homes village for the homeless cause everyone suffers from NIMBY. It's just that the nearest grocery store or any similar places are 4 miles away using 2-lane country roads with no shoulders. It isn't even safe to ride e-bikes on these roads, it's so isolated.
They tell me that the village itself will have jobs that will hire from within which is great for low-skill homeless people, but what about all the homeless people who are higher skilled. Wouldn't that hinder their growth cause they can't easily access $50K jobs, just minimum wage jobs within the village? How can someone climb out if they can't get access to higher paying jobs?

Let me ask you aquestion. What are you doing to help homeless and needy people? Maybe not so quick to judge the people who are actually helping others. Also, many people can work from home. Not everyone has to go into a workplace in order to have a job.

Tiny homes grew into a giant fraud. I've been watching the community forever till corporates got into it and up charge over 600% its value. It's just best to build your own.

If someone has tons of money and wants to buy a very fancy expensive tiny home, then that's their business. However there are many small builders who are producing a safe comfortable inexpensive home to help the people that need that, and don't have to have all the fancy bells and whistles. Basic is best. Incredible Tiny Homes in Tennessee is the best.

Something that’s important but often overlooked is that a fixed roof comes with an address. A trailer park provides that; does the tiny home village allow for that? Without it, it’s still difficult to access services and things like employment that most people take for granted.

    • @BenDurham

Oooo that's a great point. And I'm sure they haven't overlooked it in this project. At least... I hope they haven't? That'd be a pretty big blunder, otherwise.

Clicked on this video to learn more about the tiny houses. And sadly didn't learn much from your video, I don't care about what bike to use, I don't care about your story when you worked north of Edmonton, you didn't talk about different welcome hall/food bank systems and funding across Canada or the world, how different systems of helping people in need are like, how it compares to social housing or if people are ever evicted if they pass a certain salary, and you don't compare this tiny house project to other projects and simply to a trailer park... Oh and the calculations, you didn't factor in using food banks or public Healthcare coverage when you are in a homeless situation and just simply added it all up to... (what I think of this video)... Bonkers.

Most Canadians have NO idea how close they are to being one of "those" homeless people. Still better than the US, but not great. I've been homeless, and dodged that bullet again more than once (I've also been statistically "rich" as defined by a big bank, it IS better to be "rich" than poor).
Would love to see how this concept could be brought to London.

    • @BenDurham
      @BenDurham  9 месяцев назад +2

Right? So the good news is that there are initiatives that are happening in London but not enough. Indwell is a good group, although they're a faith-based charity which is less my vibe... but at least they're doing something about the crisis! Something, something "don't get perfect be the enemy of good"

I have a better plan and I have devoted this entire whole RUclips channel to explaining that, so details are on my channel. I've spent over 16,000 hours on design of a social media site that will end homelessness throughout the world and create community like doesn't exist and increase food securities in every ZIP Code around the world. As well lowering mental illness and reduced drug use globally.

The cost of a tiny house is so ridiculous. Profit margin for these clown builders is robbery.

The 12 Neighbours community is involved in the building process. There is no 'profit margin', it's actually a skills building opportunity.
