- We're hauling $300 worth of groceries back home... BY BIKE!
This is part two of our Costco run using an electric long tail cargo bike (Tern GSD)!
In this video, Katie Lardner takes us through the shopping experience while I handle the filming (as per usual).
In the first part, we covered the journey from Wortley Village to Costco, discussing the biking infrastructure in London, Ontario. Now, we’re diving into the logistics of grocery shopping for a family of four with an electric cargo bike.
Katie shares tips on how to determine just how much you can carry on a bike, and we’ll load up $300 worth of groceries before heading back home. Along the way, we’ll chat, provide insights, and face some interesting challenges on the ride back.
Let’s get shopping!

I do groceries with my pannier just fine but recently got an inexpensive Schwinn trailer with a 100lbs capacity and wow it changed my life. It feels like I've got a pick-up truck.
The Victorians used to picnic in cemeteries, i think the dead would be fine with domeone paying them a visit even if its for a little while
I think ebikes holds more potential than evs. it will only be a matter of time before city planners and politicians realize it. it will help reduce healthcare costs, reduce CO2 emissions, reduce costs to mitigate traffic jams and even expensive local mass transit. on the people side, it reduce cost of living, increase independence, improve mental and physical health. it's a win-win proposition.
Good point I think cars still have some places especially in more remote areas. However for any dense city seems a no brainer switching our infrastructure to accommodate a traffic of ebikes😊
In the US, if it lowers healthcare cost, there’s going to be a lobbyist against it 😅
Very true. At least where I live in Australia - I think it is just political that they don't encourage ebikes or actually cycling in general. They like scooter hire because the city council earns money from it. But then they provide massive subsidies to get an EV or an over-sized UTE (i.e. $6000 discounts). In some cases people could get an ebike outright with the subsidy given to purchase new cars ;).
Only in warm weather.
Only in warm weather? So for like 11 months of the year at this point? 🤣
But seriously, frostbiking is easy and super possible.
0:50 My worst case is that I always pack a double sized bungee net that I don't plan on using, but if I come back with a larger than expected load, I can make almost any sized load work. It just takes about 5 more minutes of strapping everything down tightly enough.
Cycling through a cemetery is fine. But holding your breath the whole time you ride through it is a challenge. 😃
😆 well played. Adding an oxygen tank to my bike today for when I need to ride through cemeteries 😜
Well lookie there. Their Costco actually has a decent bike rack. Where I live, I have to use a nearby hand railing to lock the bike.....ya know....on account of no space for a proper bike rack cause all the space is already used.....FOR CAR PARKING ?!?!?!? Another FANTASTIC video here Ben. Thank you so much for all of these videos. :)
Like many I just pull a trailer for days I need more stuff. Definitely easier to pack than my panniers and racks. Never have to worry with the trailer. And I prefer beating it up rather than my bikes.
My wife and I do the same but I have to safe, having a beast of a cargo bike that's meant for heavy loads is definitely more enjoyable. Luckily there are SOOO many options out there! Something for everyone 😊
Impressive. Thanks for bringing this to the interwebs. Would Hi-Viz clothing or day lighting help with being safer? Also, have you considered cold packs to help with keeping perishables chill? Thanks for the inspiration!!
This is amazing 👏🏻
In a year from now you'll be able to carry $300 worth of groceries in a backpack.
Costco is not always the best value, especially if you're buying more than you need leading to waste.
I'm pretty sure most cemeteries are considered parks and are open to the public and can be used for recreation.
I think you're right!
She is very low-viz. Black helmet, black clothes, black panniers, no flappy moving things like flag nor streamers. True, it is bright daylight & it is easy for me an experienced cyclist to see her, but I have discovered m u c h greater respect from motorists when I am clownishly obnoxiously high-vis.
yeah i learned to emblazen and tassel just about every square inch of myself and bike. otherwise people treat you like a parking pole
She rarely bikes
Would love to try this in my area. Traffic is just horrible. Would it be possible to bring your bike bags INSIDE Costco? Seems like it would reduce the guesswork and perhaps the load time too.
With the right setup, for sure! I have a trailer which I bring inside for my local grocery run. We haul A LOT in it! Just less fun for longer distances.
Unless you daily purchase 300 pounds of food you really don't need a car at all. The only reason you do is because or car centric infrastructure
I’m so jealous.
Depending on where you live, you might be able to do it too! Even if not as extreme :)
8:03 That's pretty full. But I've packed my ebike fuller than that. Sometimes, I stack things up on my front rack down with my bungee net as high as my shoulders' height. And then I used a smaller bungee net to strap down a large backpack on the back. All that in addition to the paniers on the sides. Sometimes, I strap a 5-step step ladder with me for my jobs. Half of it sticks out the back though.
She couldn't have done this 5 years ago.
At least your Costco has a bike rack!
I had to ask several times but eventually mine installed a good bike rack near the entrance.
You can submit a request on their website for your local store.
@@chow-chihuang4903 Will do. Thanks for the info.
I trimmed the low braches on the path there.
Thanks for your service 😜
I couldn't help noticing the under handle bar rear view mirror, I'm constantly having to readjust my current mirror as it sticks out beyond the handlebar ends so it looks like a good solution for me. Love the video by the way ❤
Glad to be able to share other people's setups 🍻
My Costco trips are more like 100 lbs max. I probably wouldn’t get a 7k$ cargo bike but this was a cool watch
Compared to doing that shop with a car after one year it's paid for itself.
@@CaptApril123 I don't doubt that but I have a beater car I use 1x per week and don't think it makes sense **for me**
That said I go to the grocery store daily on walks.
@@CaptApril123 that would be a dream, unfortunately there are many factors that make shopping using cars a lot more convenient.
@@Metalshark100 We've built our infrastructure such that yes in many instances using a car is more convenient. The problem is eventually as we age many people will become trapped because there are no alternatives.
@@CaptApril123 its not just infrastructure. you have to take into account weather as well and the amount of shopping you're going to do. I shop on my bike when i can but there are times when its just not possible.
I'd like to think one day it would come to the point when everyone can shop on a bike easily and conventionally but it won't happen imo. Cars can hold so much more and travel much quicker, and bikes are limited to size, wattage and torque and what strength you can push through your legs. then with all that shopping you get caught in a downpour. cycling in the rain is almost impossible for someone wearing glasses.
@5:05 Not sure about cereal but sometimes I've saved some volume by taking the contents out of the box, and folding box up either to take home, or trash before leaving.
That's definitely an option, for sure! I do like the front-rack option that she went with, though.
I really like the Tern. So many options.
I’m lucky enough to live close to a Costco with a bike rack. There are many times that it’s actually faster to bike to Costco than it would be to drive through traffic, find parking, and walk across the parking lot. My GSD makes the shopping trip super easy so long as I don’t need to bring the kids with.
This is the perfect time to agree to have "help out to your car". You can sit there and look helpless as the clerk learns to miraculously fit a full shopping cart into all the storage you have. That's how you expose people to cargo bikes.
Ooooo I wonder what would happen!! Good idea.
share-o s? is this some crazy canadian terminology or are you just smashing shared roads together and it sounds weird
They're pretty bad, tbh. But here's a good read! www.bicycling.com/news/a20044419/what-are-sharrows-used-for/
Tern (HSD or GSD) are great cargo bike. Personally, I got the HSD with a carbon belt and almost replaced my car. I also do bike rides with groups I just love it 😊 “very healthy” and fun too.
The HSD is SOOOO tempting because it's so nimble and versatile!
3,000km today on my Gazelle. Still on the original tires, chain and cassette. London Bicycle Cafe adjusted the stops on the derailleur and sent me on my way, no charge. No gas, no fees or insurance, and I’m lighter and fitter than I was when I bought it. Time to man up, and start doing more km in spring and fall…
LOVE hearing these stories! If you wanna be featured, seeing as you're local, reach out 😜
It's good to show the capability and how to go to a big store for a big load of groceries like a car would, but I've found the benefit of errands by bike is the ability to go to a variety of smaller or different stores more regularly for less items. I use a 90's MTB with a milk crate basket. It makes going to a specialty store vs the big box store more viable, which I think improves so much from quality of life to the local economy.
This and Part 1 have got to be one of the best testimonies on RUclips to the usefulness of cargo e-bikes. Absolutely brilliant!
I do grocery shopping weekly with my HSD. My top tip would be to obtain a couple of cardboard boxes the size of the base of the panniers to add some structure and load heavy stuff in the panniers. The 20" wheels mean the heavy load is low, keeping the bike balanced.
Maybe I should inquire about a sponsorship from Tern 😜 But seriously, thanks so much for the positive feedback, and I'm so glad that you enjoyed these ride-alongs! More to come ♥
On a bike that cost as much at used car. I will use trailer with Eahora Juliet 2 with 30 lb battery that goes 100 miles.
when i ride my ebike i just throttle forge pedal ebike are heavy to pedal.
can you hook a trailer to that bike? slap on a cooler box so that you can buy ice cream?
Now that is justification for working ebike.
i don't like how the cargo areas are split up into a lot of tiny ones. not ideal. it should be one big one.
When I was living in a SRO and had no car or bike I would go shopping by foot with a highschooler style backpack and a cross body bag at the nearest grocery store (about a mile) from where I was staying. You get used to the amount of stuff you can carry in such a confined space pretty quickly. The weight of items becomes pretty important as well, because bags can only carry so much weight, and so can you.
Agreed with this. I've grocery shopped with various types of bikes over the last 5 years and you definitely get a better idea of how much you can or want to hold the more you do it.
I looked up the bike. This is uderstandably very expensive. Just be aware of the 500 watt motor limit in Ontario for e-bikes. I have an Lectric XP 2..0 with the cargo package (yet to be installed) which fits my needs pretty well. This COSTCO is very close to me. I did not realize they had a bike rack.
Definitely not inexpensive! But compared to a second car, much less expensive of an option.
The Lectric ebikes are fairly decent and very affordable, too! Just make sure you don't load it up past liiiike... 100lbs + your weight? You should be good to go for costco runs, though :)
I personally have the Ride1Up 500 Step-Thru (you can see it breifly in this video) which has 11,500km on it as of today and was only about $1400 CAD!
Katie enjoyed the ride and chatting about her bike and shopping trip. Beautiful route. Good on Costco for installing the bike rack. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it ♥
More ride-alongs and podcast episodes incoming :)
Sponsored by "FAKE London" Bike Cafe lmao
What type of bike and pannies
The Tern GSD! And the panniers specifically from Tern for the GSD, I believe.
Thats not 300$ in groceries in the USA lol thats like 140$ max. I got a trailer for 30$ that holds a full shopping cart I built in a cooler too.
We're in Canada, so yeah, the bill came to $300 CAD 🤦♂️
I'm glad you were able to get a trailer that suits your needs, though! That built in cooler sounds awesome!
Your attitude in your other comment isn't awesome, though.
👀 Rather SHOCKING no bright visible clothing nor blinking lights for front/rear - why so unsafe?
You're joking, right?
@@BenDurham wish I was … visibility is critical for personal safety … especially with such poor bike infrastructure where you live. My town is worse … I never start a ride without a bright yellow mesh vest w/reflective strips & front/rear blinking lights.
But like... should people have to dress up as Christmas trees every single time they leave their home? Why aren't cars required to be all neon yellow instead of black?
@@BenDurham For survival reasons.
Motorcycles go the same speed as traffic and drive in the same lane and are still hard to see. Bicycless go much slower, generally ride on the right side and are much harder to see as a result. We all know how crappy bike lines are.!
Perhaps you could do some research with some bicycle organizations and do a video on lights and bright vests the pros and cons. Your videos are quite nice would be. I think a good service for you too see where you come out on safety on bicycles with clothing and lights, your videos are very bicycle community oriented. I hope you come down on my side of things.
@@BenDurham I found a very good well researched RUclips video by the amazing Canadians at @2Bikes4Adventure RUclips biking couple entitled “daytime running lights” I thought you might find helpful. This sites some studies done by academic institutions about the benefit of flashing lights for bicycle safety.
Hope this helps give you a future RUclips video. I do enjoy your videos very much. We just disagree on improving bicycle visibility needs.
No, I think it’s very disrespectful to ride in a cemetery that should be respected as a person last rest in place❤❤❤❤❤
I don't quite share the same opinion but to each their own! I appreciate the quiet and safety of riding through cemeteries.
@@BenDurham this generation has no respect for the living or for the dead that’s all of us ain’t going to heaven a lot of us going to hell 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️

14:05 the most women thing in the world.. "Im scared so I get to inconvenience anybody near me"
Everyone hates you, even the bike guy got over to let people pass. They may not be allowed, but they will anyway. I hate this woman. Clueless waste of air.
Woah, easy there with your silliness. She's LITERALLY doing what Sharrows are designed for. The city designed the road like this. It should've been done differently but wasn't, so this is the LITERAL proper, legal way to do this.
You should be handing in your license if you think that racing down this road and endangering other road users is worth 30 seconds of your life.
