- A Toronto walk with Ryan Donais from @tinytinyhomes
We walk from the St Lawrence Market over to near Yonge & Front to check out a tiny home prototype that Ryan has built. The aim is to provide a little bit of dignity to the underhoused and get them out of tents and into these small homes as a temporary measure until permanent housing can be provided.

With the thought that Ryan has put into the tiny home it is obvious he cares about finding a way to help the homeless. I wish him success in his endeavor. Johnny, great job with the interview. 😊
Also, if someone doesn’t come out for several days, first responders will have a pretty clear idea what they’re going to find behind the clean, convenient, super effective technology called “closed door to finite space”.
A suggestion for your next model: Put in a Rice Cooker with a steaming basket instead of a butane element. A rice cooker with steaming basket can cook an entire meal, (rice/bulghur wheat/couscous + steam vegetables + steam meat or hard boil eggs) AND it turns itself off when it's finished cooking. Much better for health, safety and likely less challenge for your power systems. A small crock pot would be good too...again it turns itself off.

What a great idea Ryan! If more of us tried to find solutions instead of complaining the world would be a better place
The problem happens when people start to steal ideas and solutions from other people and hence depriving them of the much needed funding.
I think the problem with this world is that if there's no profit and to fill the pockets of executives that make the decisions, there's no chance they will help.
More power to Ryan! Homelessness is something many of us feel so powerless to assist with other than donating money, goods, etc. Anyone trying to take concrete action to support folks who are un-housed until we can make systemic change has all of my respect. Everyone deserves to be housed, safe, secure, warm, have a bed, etc. Thank you for showcasing this initiative.
❤️❤️❤️Love this, would you be willing to share the blueprint with other communities
@@janetaskin2150 this is just prolonging his misery. Shame, I'd like to also point out how lawless and unruly homeless people are. This guy will be taken advantage of or will take advantage of others. This may be the worst idea ever

it's definitely a problem , you're correct though 👍🍀
I think it's awesome that you have come up with a loving, humane, creative idea. You are awesome!❤️
@@IsraelistheJewsland Your positivity is so underwhelming.
All my respect to this intelligent young man. With this kind of prototype there is no excuse for governments to help the growing homeless population in Canada. Congratulations !
Not bad, eh? Smart guy. I hope he succeeds! He has a clear vision and very humble attitude!
Hey, JS! It's wonderful of Ryan to build these mobile homes for the homeless. Kudos to you for bringing awarenesss of these homes by featuring in a video. Thanks, JS. 😊
This is awesome and sad at the same time. Awesome for it being a solution to many homeless people. Sad that something like this is needed in today's society.
Exactly 👍🏻 I’m heartbroken watching this wonderful young entrepreneur make something viable when the city just seems to dance around the issues. The shelters don’t really respect the clients. The food is crap. Instant skim milk, tongue sandwiches, served by people who think you are worse than a dog 😢
Every single building going up should have 20% of the units subsidized.👍🏻💯
Absolutely. I was livid when I saw the Regent Park apartment I lived in 30 years ago auctioned off for almost a million dollars. I looked up the billionaire responsible for that crap. Vladimir Putin much?
Does anybody else remember when we used to have subsidised housing ?
@@xenabe4437 it's still there just really long wait list to get a place
Just being pragmatic, these would be ruined with meth residue in no time. It's very toxic and very hard to remediate.
Really loved hearing Ryan talking about his concerns and solutions - his care moves me. Good hearted guy to the core and putting his skills to work to make his solutions a reality!
This is a really cool idea and definitely better than living in a tent. One thing that worries me is that these tiny homes might be targeted by people who find it funny to tip them over and trap the person inside. I think it's essential to have more than one exit point. Even if the window were removable, it's not big enough for an average adult to crawl through. I hope a future build version will address that point.
@@RenaSunflash Also, might it be possible to have legs that could be put down, to increase stability (and maybe prevent tipping) when the unit is parked?
I hope that this will temporary solve many people's life, Ryan is such a genuinely nice person
Kudos for bringing awareness to Ryan’s wonderful idea and mission.
Great video.
This is exactly what we need right across the country from the West too the East and in between. Homeless people desever to have a place too call home with dignity
Homelessness is near and dear too my heart I had 4 family members who were homeless at one point in their lives sadly I lost two of them, Housing is a right not a privilege end of.
They will get that when they get sober. People play like its just unfortunate people. when it's mostly drugs. Thats the root.
Can this be taken over by whoever comes along first.? If someone settles in does it become their home. They could probably go to a shelter to shower but with no bathroom facilities what provision could there. The street or a park close is a bit demeaning. Just a thought. If you manage to have a community you could make group provisions. Go luck. This is a wonderful project.

There's no one, only a prototype. He's looking for investors.
This is phenomenal! Thank you, Ryan for your ingenuity and insight. It’s people like you who are leading the way in showing us how to make a difference… changing the world and how we treat each other. ❤
Hello Ryan.
I drove in Toronto for living and spent most part of my day on street witnessing the housing issue growing to its limit. Great idea with a descent ambition as human. I admire your design for a short term housing solution. Mayor of the city should call you for showcasing your designing art. If that happens, let us know we will all come to clap for you. Cheers.
Ryan is such a kind hearted person!
This is just an amazing amount of work that went into this. Propz to Ryan and thanks Johnny for sharing.
YR RIGHT !!! EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE HOUSED, SAFE , SECURE AND WARM ... TYVM JUSTIN 😢😢😢
Love Ryan’s design - this would be a dream for many who choose the autonomy of a tent over the awful shelter system…this is safe and comfortable. Not sure about the bike for people with addictions however this could be easily modified…imagine this as a kit that someone could put together themselves - @Habitat for Humanity…what a project this would be!
Yes, the kit idea is a good one to avoid lawsuits.
I wish this man well his heart is in the right place i am worry of the cost that is why there are homeless thanks johnny for having him on
Great Heart for sure. I'm sure if government did a pilot, and worked out some safety kinks, it would be a valuable tool. The thing I would worry about would be road safety, especially road rage. Great pilot, and if there under 10k, win win. Fund raising could cover some cost.
Many homeless have some money, we live near an encampment in Hamilton and many have camper vans they live out of they got cheap.
Not to mention that these can be donated.
I'd live in this, and to travel with a bike and a camper around my neck of the woods would be just fabulous.
Such an important video. Great job Johnny.
Thank you JS. I actually checked into the tiny home after I saw it on your George Street video. My friend is homeless and I am willing to fund one for her but she is paranoid and would likely not use it. I wasted $200 on a cellphone so she could be contacted for housing which she threw away. The wait time for rent-geared-to income housing is 16 years. Maybe the streets-to-homes program is 18 months but like you said, if there is no way to contact them, they will fall off the list. Based on Olivia Chow's current rate of building affordable housing, it will take 150 years to house the 24,000 people on the list. My friend is so far gone, she is not applying for any assistance. I got a form 2 and the cops dragged her to the hospital but the doctor let her go because she insisted she was OK. Unfortunately the mentally ill have rights and my hands are tied. I have some ideas for the home design but I will contact Ryan directly.
It takes a lot to manage day-to-day living, a rooming house where meals are prepared, laundry is done and the residents have just a room to manage might be more accessible. Of course they still have to get along with others, pay rent, manage their own health care, that's the hard part. No easy answers.
@@lemondropkid6175 Yes, my friend's sister is also mentally ill but she has been seeing a psychiatrist for over 20 years and he was able to get her into a group home, St. Jude's. That took 5 years and the sister cooperated. My friend won't admit she is mentally ill.
I hope u were able to contact Ruan ... Sorry about ur friend! You tried to help them...
@@wendylau our politicians have monstrously let the people of this country down. The only one with real plans to help is Poillievre. Vote Conservative.

This needs to go viral so that homeless people do not freeze during winter. This can potentially save many lives and give hope to the hopeless ❤❤❤
18 months? The waitlist is 15 years for affordable housing. I know, as I'm in it. Unless you can prove your life is at risk (which is incredibly tricky to prove), which about a year. I saw him when it was parked right outside the market. It's an amazing concept, I hope he reaches out to the city to work with them, instead of waiting on the city to reach out to him.
It’s important to note that the stress of living rough puts an incredible strain on mental health. This often leads to substance use, not the other way around. I really applaud Ryan. Unfortunately, I don’t think this will make anyone feel dignified. It won’t be long before these are stigmatized or become magnets for unforeseen issues. How can the upkeep be managed, and how can limits be ensured on the number of inhabitants that it supports? How many of these would we need? And where will they be parked? We have to address the critical state of our unhoused population, but I fear the city will use these kinds of solutions instead of providing long term homes. Hopefully some of these points have already been considered. Ryan seems to be a very thoughtful and practical person. Thanks for actually trying to innovate on a very serious problem that the city seems to take far less seriously. ❤
Wow! I went and donated right away. I hope a lot of cities get involved. Way to go Ryan.
I’m surprised someone with deep pockets hasn’t jumped on board to invest in this. This would be so helpful to those that don’t want to like I a permanent home dwelling and possibly struggle to follow society’s rules
Wonderful Ryan. Great solution for homeless for years to come.
Wonderful that you took the time to bring this project to everyone's attention. Maybe you should do more video's like this. Not only brings your views up but helps promote worthy projects. Kudos!
A brilliant humane idea for Toronto. Godspeed with this.
This is amazing, I hope it gets traction! Kudos to Ryan!
What a great idea! I work in DT Toronto and am troubled by seeing people sleeping in the streets. This is a great alternative to tents and sleeping on the sidewalk. Hopefully the city of Toronto or other communities will enter into a partnership with this guy.
Thank you to this gentleman helping the homeless 😊
Homelessness is not merely a matter of unaffordable housing.
There are all kinds of issues relating to mental health, motivation and attitudes...
Good luck confining these issues into rolling little boxes.
Truth is that what kept the problem contained in the past has been neutralized. Pandora's box has been opened and nobody dares try to reclose it.
Amazing , if anything they will be warm. Every city needs these as affordable housing is a pipe dream.
this is how all torontonians will live if they don't limit the rents and fix the housing crisis

@@randychase305do you realize that of Canada did not take in lots of immigrants that we would be declining in population? Our birth rate is dastardly low. And with the looming die off of the b baby boomer generation, depopulation is a major problem major cities around the entire world are going to have to face. Canada is in a relatively great position however to weather that storm because of our well-established immigration system. In 20 or 30 years countries will be competing for immigrants to come to their countries. And will be near or at the top of the list. Without immigration Canada would be in population decline and we would be facing economic disaster. Immigration is literally part of our economic strategy. We're getting ahead of the game and we will be set up well for the future. You can be a nationalist if you want but where are relatively young country and we took this land from other people as well it's a natural human phenomenon. Embrace it. I live in Vancouver and honestly this place would be so boring if not for the extreme diversity. LOL as if Trudeau are any single entity is swaying things that much. A conservative in power right now would be doing the same thing maybe not quite to the same degree but Canada has no choice but to rely on immigration. Countries like Japan which has virtually no immigration is it going to be totally and absolutely screwed when the baby boomers die off.
@@d-rockanomaly9243 one reason contributing to our low birth rate is the housing crises. People can't start families if they can't afford housing and are forced to live in their parents' basement at 30. We are taking in too many immigrants too fast and are not keeping up with housing supply, not to mention enough doctors to serve 40 million or road/public transit infrastructure to move people around the overcrowded city. These problems wouldn't exist if immigrants would consider settling in rural areas. Also, turdo needs to stop bringing in so many people from India. That's not diversity. Be strategic with where we are accepting immigrants and being in skilled workers who can help construct home. We don't need more Indian Uber scooter drivers.
I'd be interested to hear about some of the feedback from the public when they're face to face with Ryan vs. just lobbing dumb shots off online. Contributed to the GoFundMe - thanks for making the effort, Ryan - it's more than a lot of politicians are willing to do.
WTF are you talking about? All I've seen are positive comments. Oh, and if I had something to say to dough boy, I wouldn't hesitate to say it to his face.
Ryan, this is a fantastic idea. It could save many lives and give Canadian people a fair chance at a new beginning. When a city clears encampments, where do the people go?
All municipalities should be offering this compassionate invention.

What an amazing idea and concept, and God bless you Ryan, your heart is in the right place and you you express it with work and action. I pray the gov’t will see the merit of your noble intentions and get on board with you.
Ryan, this is an idea that could certainly gain some traction, in my opinion. Our civic authorities were reluctant to approve more stationary options, this might work - I wish you the best of luck. Looking up the website now.
This is a concept that I have talked about for the last several years among friends and family. Our city is dealing with a major increase in homelessness as well. Imagine working with our City Counsels to have these units developed AND have designated stop areas where people can recharge batteries, have bathrooms and laundry facilities. Bring back some personal pride. I am going to share this. Good luck!!
Brilliant 👏 👏 Every state in America needs these. I'm from Alaska & the homeless population with tent cities is out of control. People freeze to death or often times Lose extremities due to hypothermia. This contraption would be life saving to many.
It is a great idea. Hope people don't complain. At least they will be able to stay warm and dry

What a great idea Ryan! Your heart is set on making this world a better place. i really hope that you get City funding and see your project succeed. 👋✌
Take the city to the human rights tribunal and make them work with you. Get a judge to order them. Every time they destroy a tent and belongings, the city has to replace that tent and belongings with one of your tiny homes.
Hi Ryan! I saw you and your tiny home when it was parked on George Street South!! What a wonderful solution to the growing homeless situation. Homelessness has been neglected for years...and the problem is growing! These days...it could happen to anyone! This is a secure and comfortable little home to provide for people until the City and Gov't can start building more affordable housing! Thank you for your good design sense and willingness to work on a solution to help out!!
This is brilliant! I hope this catches on and helps people that are really in need. I've posted the website on my Facebook page and & I hope many others will do the same.
This is amazing, thank you Ryan for doing more than other Torontonians who complain but don't put in the work for alternative solutions.
I live in Toronto, and have been thinking about living in a van to escape the crazy rent costs in the city. My biggest concern is safety since I am an older woman (who is mobility challenged). The other thing is the a concern is being in it full-time (and even through the winter). Are you planning on insulating it for winter-living?
I could see so many things to do with this!!! I'd love to bike across the province or even to the coast with this bad boy! It's great for any and everyone!!! I love that it's being designed to support the vulnerable!
I'm not sure I'd want to see more slow moving vehicles in the downtown core being operated by people who may potentially be under the influence or mentally unstable. But you can't knock this gentleman's ambition to make a difference. I think it's a great concept.
What a great, thoughtful idea.Somehow, the city of Toronto should get involved.Maybe something will come of it.

Most people will feel bad for the homeless population, say "it's not fair" and "someone should do something", then they move on with their lives and don't do anything about it. Ryan clearly cares about people and he acts accordingly. The homeless crisis is huge in every city, Halifax has 11 tent cities. It used to be that homeless people were on drugs, but now they seem to be working full time and can't afford to live or even find a place. This is a great idea. Nice word, Ryan.

toilet for sure... that can be dumped in a public washrm when needed... also a garbage can too.
camping showers usually on the outside ( so nicer weather), it looks too small to have a wet zone. I've seen ones living in vans who have camping showers.
The whole thing is waterproof, he just needs to put a drain and make sure the batteries from the solar power don’t get wet. And I mean a composting toilet would work, but if he added the ones that drain down out to be emptied for later would be a plus plus.otherwise , He’s done such a great job… crossed all his t’s.

A solid idea and a helpful solution to help with safety and security. It is so disheartening to see so many without proper shelter and it is only going to get worse as the rents continue to rise. I wish Ryan all the best on the venture and i hope he is able to find donations to build more.
I’ve had this idea for a while now, just don’t have the resources to build a prototype. I’m glad someone’s doing it.
This is amazing! Now if cities across Canada will buy into it to help the homeless that would be great! Nobody should be homeless or not have a safe place to sleep at night!
The other thing that kills me is how many hundreds of thousands of properties are sitting empty because they're owned by foreign investors who all flock to the West Coast because they got a gigantic return on their investment. While I don't fault them for that.
The person who's paid the price for it is the people who live on the west coast because there is nothing left that's affordable to rent!
More and more of us are living in our cars. I know people who make $80,000 a year and still have to have a roommate so they can afford to live on the West Coast and they're not living in San Francisco, Vancouver or Seattle.
Once your car breaks down or you can't afford to keep it insured or you can't afford to pay the registration because you got too many red light tickets. So you lose your car..Then you're living out of a shopping cart and now there's no place to go. This is exactly how it starts for those that fall through the cracks. The other percentage of course is the people who have mental health and substance use disorder. Or they're disabled and disability in the United States won't even feed a cat let alone support a whole entire human being..
Fascinating way to live. Great video. Thank you.
This is literally the solution right here. With a small plug in electric heater, these people would be surviving well through the winter.
The best Johnny strides episode I’ve ever seen. This is the way to do it. I’ve been telling ken to do episodic things like this. Great job.
There are cities like Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where there are homeless people who need a tiny home thank God for a good hearted person like you that help others may God bless you and thanks be safe
This is AMAZING!! I wish you all the success with this project Ryan! It takes a very special, caring, loving Man to do something that may help the homeless!! Why can't our government fund Ryan and help? I'd be talking to your MP and Provincial government! You're awesome! ❤😊
This would be great too if it could be used in conjunction with jobs training. Like maybe train people to do construction and they have a house to move to different job sites.
