It's not YOU that's out there on the street vulnerable and cold or anything. But it is you that has all the answers, I mean since you're more important than other people and all. @@Jimi-h3i No Jim. I was homeless for the better part of 20 years. I lived in cars, vans and the sidewalk. No one should be displaced especially those that work and need to park their own car in their neighborhood. I don't have all the answers, but taking up parking spaces for homeless people is not the solution, living on the streets is not the solution either, letting everyone into this country is also not the solution!
you are so right. i worked graveyard for 25 years straight so that i could earn (20 percent) differential and be a part of my children's lives. as i got older, it became unsustainable and i had sleep disturbances (rarely more than 90 minutes of sleep uninterrupted) that made me feel like the cells in my brain were tearing in half. i cannot imagine being on the street, i really can't.
I’ve been living out of a 10x6 for over a year now. Fully custom built by me, for myself. It has a diesel heater, electric heater, generator, manual pump sink, 5g wifi, power station, solar, 42inch tv, PlayStation, PC, fresh air exchanger, air conditioning, wood stove, Murphy bed, pull out keyboard with desk chair, induction cooktop, galvanized roof, metal exterior, r20 insulation, screwed and nailed and glued everything with hurricane ties. Was one of the best decision I think I ever made, making this thing. Truly been a dream come true to own your own home. Even tho it’s not like what others have it feels more like home than I’ve ever been.
Another note I should make is that the property I moved to is perfect for building tiny homes with a mechanic shop and a wood shop and a few big bays. I wanna get to building more now I’ve made it my first year. My problem is the same tho, I need more capital to build. I’m more than willing to do it for free to help others.
@ yep. All my stuff is designed around blue jugs and buckets. It’s not luxurious but it works for me. My sink pumps from a blue jug manually into a tap and sink then dumps to a bucket I empty. Number two is bagged and garbage, number 1 is dumped outside. Shower water is heated outside with propane then pumped from a bucket with a usb rechargeable pump and I have a shower stall/ bathroom spot with half walls and half shower curtain. I have to remove the bucket toilet to use it. There is a double drain plug system I unscrew and put a second bucket outside under the drain. Also I added an outside vented garbage bin that has a pass through in the kitchen so I can put waste in the garbage and it exits the tiny home. It’s tight in here so a few more feet would have been nice but it still works for me.
@@pamelabennett4792 at least his intentions are good and he has started to do something about the fact that people are homeless and what he can help with that
It's a lot easier housing people in sleeping pods like they do in Japan. It's very space efficient. The pod could even be locked up when they are out keeping their valuables safe. A pod would be high enough one could sit up in so easily 2 stacked in an 8' ceiling room or 3 if you really push it with a thin mattress. They could be ventilated, soundproof and light proof so people would sleep very well, unlike in homeless dormitory type shelters where they wake up exhausted in the morning because of the noise all night from addicts Jonesing for their fix. The pod could be about 7' long with shelves on each side for belongings. 7' x say 4' x 4' = 112 cubit feet. Now take a room with an 8' ceiling like most are. Make it about 17' wide to allow for a 3' hallway for easy access. Think of how many you could get into just 1000 sq ft. In a large warehouse you could house literally thousands. But how do you get addicts into treatment if they don't feel like it? You make possession illegal. But they don't get a record, they are just segregated. Oh....possession would entail testing positive for illegal drugs. And police would have the power to test people on the street if they suspected. Most are very easy to spot. In a few days entire downtowns could be swept clean of addicts and they would all be drying out in a place where there is no chance of drugs entering because everyone is searched coming and going and they aren't going anywhere for weeks. And they are kept busy with work programs while there so they can learn new skills. And they maintain their own facilities. Indoor growing could feed much of their dietary needs. Because without treatment MOST WILL DIE of their addiction. Or get imprisoned for years at great cost to the taxpayer.
I agree, but who’s paying for it? I don’t think the average homeless person well, maybe they get a check just like the next person unless they get alcohol or drugs they should have some money I hope he says the next ones gonna be I doubt they have close to 10,000 for one, but you never know could be rich.
@@caroljohnston5677 Our governments are spending millions of dollars for temporary housing for homeless folks. One of the options should be buying a parking lot and filling it with these 'tiny tiny' homes.
Very charismatic and well spoken gentleman showing off the tiny home. I really enjoyed listening to him speaking. I experienced homelessness back in October last year and feel it has forever changed me. The levels of pride and joy he has for his home is truly special. I’m very happy for him.
😮This is a brilliant concept. One possible way to make it viable: maybe companies could pay for the houses by using them as mobile advertising. The companies could pay the dwellers to drive around the city, thus giving them a small income and dignity.
As long as the homes are owned by them - could be a viable option. Though the owner can get creative with their income and also have a stealthy home. Whatever their preference.
The city needs to provide spaces with portable toilets where people could park these overnight without getting into trouble. This guy is awesome and definitely needs to be sponsored and supported. Homeless people need help to get into some sort of shelter especially in the winter and this is a great intermediate solution.
Yes. Any of the carparks at shopping centers could, for a small fee, allow access to their toilets etc. A certain part of the carpark could be set aside for that; there however should be a time people have to leave their rented space of a morning.
This is a prototype, and this is a great idea, Ryan ! Living in a tent is inhuman in an urban environment. I truly admire your project! ! Excellent work 👏🏻 👍🏻
I think the problem with this world is that if there's no profit and to fill the pockets of executives that make the decisions, there's no chance they will help.
Very well executed.. the occupant will have to be organized which discounts the majority of homeless with drug/mental issues. As to materials used, don't kid yourself, it's not green for a variety of reasons. This is an e-powered travel trailer. It would need lots of insulation to be remotely efficient, where to drain the grey water, the weight of water and diesel. We wouldn't have the homeless problem in the first place if intetest rates weren't kept at rock bottom for 20+ years. I like his ideas but when reality comes knocking, we'll see.
in a capitalist society, the goal is not to make the world a better place. Its to compete with each other to maximize profits. Wealth is success, wealth is political influence and power... then we consider all the losers from that process as an after thought.
Kathy I appreciate the way you expressed the same way I feel. This project of Ryans is in a state of evolution from his recognition homeless people need safety to a viable tiny casa. Just think a year from now what it could be.😊😊
All my respect to this intelligent young man. With this kind of prototype there is no excuse for governments to help the growing homeless population in Canada. Congratulations !
Absolutely amazing. This gentleman deserves a Noble Peace Prize. I am sending prayers that this amazing concept takes off and helps thousands of people in need.
It’s a nice design, but there are MANY of these “mobile or stationary boxes” for the homeless, and people making them. The hard part is always the land underneath…where can people leave them and live/sleep in them? Do they just use the bathroom “elsewhere?” How long can they stay in one spot, how many in one area? Those are the points where it starts to get hard and solutions are really tricky.
A suggestion for your next model: Put in a Rice Cooker with a steaming basket instead of a butane element. A rice cooker with steaming basket can cook an entire meal, (rice/bulghur wheat/couscous + steam vegetables + steam meat or hard boil eggs) AND it turns itself off when it's finished cooking. Much better for health, safety and likely less challenge for your power systems. A small crock pot would be good too...again it turns itself off.
More power to Ryan! Homelessness is something many of us feel so powerless to assist with other than donating money, goods, etc. Anyone trying to take concrete action to support folks who are un-housed until we can make systemic change has all of my respect. Everyone deserves to be housed, safe, secure, warm, have a bed, etc. Thank you for showcasing this initiative.

Most people will feel bad for the homeless population, say "it's not fair" and "someone should do something", then they move on with their lives and don't do anything about it. Ryan clearly cares about people and he acts accordingly. The homeless crisis is huge in every city, Halifax has 11 tent cities. It used to be that homeless people were on drugs, but now they seem to be working full time and can't afford to live or even find a place. This is a great idea. Nice word, Ryan.
A lot of homeless people end up homeless again because they waste their money on drugs, and alcohol. You'd be surprised how many people actually enjoy living in misery and filth. I currently live in subsidized housing and hate living here due to so many neighbors and their FILTH! They get a home that's almost free to rent and instead of appreciating it, what do they do? They turn it into Trash! When I wasn't poor, I used to feel sorry for the poor in Canada, after becoming a single mother and becoming poor and living in poor neighborhoods, I stopped feeling sorry for most poor people in Canada(especially singles without children) cause many of them are thieves, users, filthy, selfish people that don't appreciate the help they get a lot of the times and turn everything into trash.

I’m so proud of Ryan. What a wonderful individual. He is running a mini habitat for humanity. We need more people like him in the world. We are so blessed to have him as a fellow Canadian❤
I hope not. How many homeless people would you shelter in those? How many would you need to actually help people? You could build a building with that money and give people accomodation. You could set up a camp full of tents and keep staff trained in providing security for the people living there. Refugee camps exist elsewhere in the world. Homeless camps do not exist. I wonder why. No I don''t. Because people don't take these people seriously. They need housing. Many need treatment for mental illness. Not this.
This is awesome and sad at the same time. Awesome for it being a solution to many homeless people. Sad that something like this is needed in today's society.
Exactly 👍🏻 I’m heartbroken watching this wonderful young entrepreneur make something viable when the city just seems to dance around the issues. The shelters don’t really respect the clients. The food is crap. Instant skim milk, tongue sandwiches, served by people who think you are worse than a dog 😢 Every single building going up should have 20% of the units subsidized.👍🏻💯
Absolutely. I was livid when I saw the Regent Park apartment I lived in 30 years ago auctioned off for almost a million dollars. I looked up the billionaire responsible for that crap. Vladimir Putin much?

What a great idea! I work in DT Toronto and am troubled by seeing people sleeping in the streets. This is a great alternative to tents and sleeping on the sidewalk. Hopefully the city of Toronto or other communities will enter into a partnership with this guy.
Years ago homeless who had medical issues were put in hospital type settings where nurses took care of them. But since Bob Rae said they have rights.... those homeless with medical issues are now free to check themselves out of care or decide themselves if they won't take their medication. Some then become violent and lose all sense of hygiene. I'm not sure a tiny house would help them or they would even use it. The tiny house would certainly work for those who regard this as a solution to emergency housing for one or two people and a temporary step until they gain their independence/job again.
You would think that our government would be jumping at the chance to work with you in order to combat the homeless dilemma. You are brilliant. Congratulations.
This is phenomenal! Thank you, Ryan for your ingenuity and insight. It’s people like you who are leading the way in showing us how to make a difference… changing the world and how we treat each other. ❤
What impressed me the most is the thought behind the decisions for future iterations. From classifying it as a bike (no motor) for safety, liability, and consideration for the demographic of people it is designed for.
This was heartfelt. All peoples deserve to be housed. Governments have lots of money for useless wars, and help for other countries in need. How come they "never have the funds" to take care of their own citizens? I hope one day, I never have to see anyone sleeping in the streets on cardboards, tents, undergrounds, benches, and many dangerous places. This goes for homeless animals like: dogs, and cats. 😪😢
@@alexv1190 My comment is about homelessness in our own backyards, and governments always having funds to support ALL useless wars, but not to help the needy. Yes, they benefit the billionaires, (military industrial complex) and the governments that order those wars. Does it benefit the regular soldier that fights those wars? NO! The soldier that survives, gets a Medal. The one that dies, comes home in a box (whole or in pieces). The family gets a Flag, and a Medal as a "Thank you for your Service"... The root of the problem starts with Our Governments, that gives our tax money to billionaires to 'play' with... Capitalism is the name of the game, masking as: "They're fighting for our freedoms".
This!!! This is how you take care of people. I love that someone stayed up late at night thinking about how to serve houseless people makes my heart happy. I hope this takes off, I hope we see these everywhere, so much dignity in a tiny little living space. Thank you sir!
Glad to see someone take the initiative to help the homeless? Are you aware that since 2000, Toronto has spent almost four billion dollars on the homeless?

This is a good thing he has made for people. It is a safe and dry place to sleep. He is doing what he can to help during a seemingly unsolvable housing crisis. I believe the affordable housing crisis can be resolved, once the greed of landlords and the anti-affordable housing people stop fighting zoning laws. We are all human beings. We need to help people where we can.
Really loved hearing Ryan talking about his concerns and solutions - his care moves me. Good hearted guy to the core and putting his skills to work to make his solutions a reality!
Thank you JS. I actually checked into the tiny home after I saw it on your George Street video. My friend is homeless and I am willing to fund one for her but she is paranoid and would likely not use it. I wasted $200 on a cellphone so she could be contacted for housing which she threw away. The wait time for rent-geared-to income housing is 16 years. Maybe the streets-to-homes program is 18 months but like you said, if there is no way to contact them, they will fall off the list. Based on Olivia Chow's current rate of building affordable housing, it will take 150 years to house the 24,000 people on the list. My friend is so far gone, she is not applying for any assistance. I got a form 2 and the cops dragged her to the hospital but the doctor let her go because she insisted she was OK. Unfortunately the mentally ill have rights and my hands are tied. I have some ideas for the home design but I will contact Ryan directly.
It takes a lot to manage day-to-day living, a rooming house where meals are prepared, laundry is done and the residents have just a room to manage might be more accessible. Of course they still have to get along with others, pay rent, manage their own health care, that's the hard part. No easy answers.
@@lemondropkid6175 Yes, my friend's sister is also mentally ill but she has been seeing a psychiatrist for over 20 years and he was able to get her into a group home, St. Jude's. That took 5 years and the sister cooperated. My friend won't admit she is mentally ill.

This is a really cool idea and definitely better than living in a tent. One thing that worries me is that these tiny homes might be targeted by people who find it funny to tip them over and trap the person inside. I think it's essential to have more than one exit point. Even if the window were removable, it's not big enough for an average adult to crawl through. I hope a future build version will address that point.
@@RenaSunflash Also, might it be possible to have legs that could be put down, to increase stability (and maybe prevent tipping) when the unit is parked?

As someone who just experienced homelessness I can tell you, even with the few problems or changes needed that I see, this would certainly be a wonderful thing to have as an option!! I would have loved to stay in one of these instead of the AWFUL shelter I was in or a tent!! I only have a few suggestions which would make this perfect 👍 1. You definitely need to make a place for a potty to be stored otherwise it might get a little stinky and messy in there 😱 maybe there is enough room in the bed storage area for a portable camping potty to go, but certainly that should be addressed. 2. You should make the last pillow also be a support so that the couch transforms into a full bed. 3. You already said it, you need a place for a fridge to keep food cold. 4. You also already said it; you need a sink and a bit of water storage. 5. Getting rid of the microwave is a great idea and that way you can afford to put a bit more solar. Also, that space will now be freed up for more storage which is always very important in tiny spaces. With a little gas portable cook top you don’t really need a microwave anyway. 6. I don’t really think you should get rid of the powered bicycle. I know the only way I would be able to bike pulling one of these is with the powered bicycle. I think what you have created here is a wonderful idea and I truly hope that these start being used by cities instead of awful tents and shelters!!!! 🙏❤
Yes an emergency toilet might be good. I think there are small ones that separate urin. Might be good if this and a camping fridge is on drawers below the couch. The fridge could also act as a separate seat in a pinch. I think both backrest cushions are removeable and form a full bed. I also would prefer an electric powered bike - otherwise you might really struggle to move it - with uneven paving, hills, heatwaves,... It could even be on a separate trailer - then you could only use the bike. Though that probably will increase the price further. If a small sink and water tank is added I think it can be a temporary housing. Completely dependent on outside temperatures of course - but much better then a tent.
Fantastic idea and appreciate the big heart in bringing a solution to the ever rising housing problems of Toronto. My don lives there and we talk a lot about homeless people in the City. Thanks Johnny Strides giving this initiative a public eye.

@@LMBee00 Yea your right, I mean someone's life is not worth giving up a parking space. I mean a place to park your oversized car or SUV is really more important than a humans health and well-being. I mean it doesn't necessarily mean that you are a Monster just because you value parking more than life itself for someone in need. I mean why would you care? It's not YOU that's out there on the street vulnerable and cold or anything. But it is you that has all the answers, I mean since you're more important than other people and all. May you receive everything you deserve. And screw everyone else after all. Right?🤔
@@Jimi-h3i No Jim.
Even a sane person starts to lose it with lack of sleep...
It's awesome to see someone taking action to help.

you are so right. i worked graveyard for 25 years straight so that i could earn (20 percent) differential and be a part of my children's lives. as i got older, it became unsustainable and i had sleep disturbances (rarely more than 90 minutes of sleep uninterrupted) that made me feel like the cells in my brain were tearing in half.
i cannot imagine being on the street, i really can't.
Would be cool to see a video of it
@ I’ll do one next summer as it should be almost done. I slowed up the finishing as now I’m living inside 🤣
but does it have a toilet and shower?
I absolutely love the compassion that has been poured into this.

This needs to go viral so that homeless people do not freeze during winter. This can potentially save many lives and give hope to the hopeless ❤❤❤
And summer too
It's a lot easier housing people in sleeping pods like they do in Japan.
@@caroljohnston5677you should pay since you brought up money and also house a few drug addicts

Great con men usually are great speakers...
😮This is a brilliant concept. One possible way to make it viable: maybe companies could pay for the houses by using them as mobile advertising. The companies could pay the dwellers to drive around the city, thus giving them a small income and dignity.
Great idea!
As long as the homes are owned by them - could be a viable option.
Though the owner can get creative with their income and also have a stealthy home. Whatever their preference.

Yes. Any of the carparks at shopping centers could, for a small fee, allow access to their toilets etc. A certain part of the carpark could be set aside for that; there however should be a time people have to leave their rented space of a morning.
@fatsab59 this could even have a solar panel on top so they could have a light or heater fan etc

What a great idea Ryan! If more of us tried to find solutions instead of complaining the world would be a better place
The problem happens when people start to steal ideas and solutions from other people and hence depriving them of the much needed funding.

God bless this man. This is truly the Lord’s work. I pray he gets lots of sponsors.

What a humble nice guy, love this, with a sink and possibly a small slow cooker you're pretty much good to go forever.
As someone who just experienced homelessness I can tell you, even with the few problems or changes needed that I see, this would certainly be a wonderful thing to have as an option!! I would have loved to stay in one of these instead of the AWFUL shelter I was in or a tent!! I only have a few suggestions which would make this perfect 👍
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
I pray this young man is very successful..he is doing God's work for sure! I send him love, and to everyone else ❣
Well Ryan, what a lovely concept - what a blessing for the unfortunate Homeless - wish you well in your noble service.
Ryan is such a kind hearted person!
That tiny tiny home is so awesome. Much needed in the USA also🦩
Fantastic idea and appreciate the big heart in bringing a solution to the ever rising housing problems of Toronto. My don lives there and we talk a lot about homeless people in the City. Thanks Johnny Strides giving this initiative a public eye.
