I love Yo-Yo Ma. OMG, while listening to this I was thinking of the intense Susan Sarandon music in the movie the Witches of East Wick and then I hear Yo-Yo playing it at 6:38, Awesome! Thank you for posting this beautiful concerto!
@YTM021807 Well, I'm really glad you decided to. This is really a gorgeous piece. My stand partner in orchestra is learning it for college auditions, and so she plays it for me sometimes and it's amazing. :D
@Bullz4eva93 Both Rostropovich and Yo-Yo Ma have complete mastery. It is a matter of tempo or taste. It is wonderful (thanks to RUclips) to be able to compare and appreciate both interpretations!
Correct! This year's "Festival Casals" starts tomorrow February 22, 2008. The legacy, humanity, kindness and spirit of Pablo Casals lives on and was fully present in this concert!
3:27 I think that yo-yo ma has by far the best opening to this concerto I have ever heard. Most other cellists seem to hit a bad not or two on their way though that opening.
@justjayit777 Antonin Dvorak Cello Concerto. It is not a single song, it is a magnificent concerto rich in "songs", melodies, fast developments, slow adagio, tender, aggressive attacks ... etc etc .....
I never considered that Puerto Rico had a major orchestra... especially one this good! It seems that Yo Yo Ma can easily play this in in sleep... never looks at his fingerboard, which I would find nearly impossible.
@a51078788 Yes! and It reflects what happens when somebody is "freed" when he goes "beyond virtuosity". His joy of being in the ** CASALS Festival ** also contributes!
Would sell my soul to the devil just to SEE this piece played by the late Jacquline du Pre, Cause I have the recording (second CD in EMI recordings) and her interpretation is just heavenly. I adore Yo Yo Ma still. such a wonderful artist.
@justjayit777 wrote: "I totally love this song!! What's the actual name of it?" It was written by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak - it is his Cello Concerto and is widely available on C.D. The BEST ever performance was by the Spanish Cellist Pablo Cassals If you don't want to buy it, try your Public Library - most of them have C.D's that you can borrow, then just download it onto "My Music" and play it from there. (Let me know how you make out) Enjoy!
@s34n777 Rostropovich was an amazing player. I believe in this concerto, at the least from the versions I've heard from both cellists, I think Ma has a better emotional grasp on it. Rostropovich I think had a fantastic technical grasp on it, and really showed his complete mastery of the instrument through this concerto.
Oh wow I love the way he plays this in this old recording. So much more energy than his more recent ones (of this same concerto, that is). If only he took a little bit more time through the epic buildup around 7:20! My favourite part to the whole piece and he's all like SCREW THIS BIT! IMMA GO MADFAST TO THE TUTTI SECTION SO I CAN HAVE A REST! :'(
at 5:40, the second theme, his face exemplifies exactly how i feel when i try to play but when i get to the part at 6:05 i mess up and ruin the mood...
Yo Yo Ma is extremely talented and an AMAZING musician-- and the funniest part is that he finds the joy in every bit of the piece, as he looks expectantly the orchestra to fulfill his need for the beautiful music. I must say, however, that while I do respect his brilliancy, I do not agree with his rather choppy interpretation of the piece. Like Ramsesthethird2, I am a sucker for Du Pre's interpretation, which i find deeper and more meaningful.
I think the opening of Ma is less impressive than the one of Rostropovich. Rostropovich's opening is just like a shout, a challenge the soloist sends to the orchestra, it sounds more masculine than Ma's and gives me really a shock. Until then did I understand what fortissimo is. Just my feeling, I appriciate both, though.

I watch this whole thing everyday before I practice 3 hours to remind me what i'm trying to achieve. Thank you God of cello.
@YTM021807 I'm really glad you did, regardless. It's such a wonderful piece, and this, despite the "radio thing", is my favorite recording by far.

I played this albumn on jobsites to work by and I never had a complaint and got lots of work done!
I love this piece! I accompanied an eleven-year-old soloist on it once
8:43 that violinist is telling the conductor how he feels about being in the 2nd violins

Yo-Yo Ma is beast! Love this piece.
INCREIBLEMENTE EMOCIONANTE
grahhh the radio thing is annoying. This is so beautiful though!
The file is on my pc back home. I'm at college. I'll try to remember to look for it the next time I'm home.
It is evident that a nail was bothering him and he correctly waited ( at 8:40 ) for a moment of inactivity to perform the operation.
I thought he was picking his nose lol

Yo yo is awesome here.
The annual "Festival Casals" inspires everyone. Enjoy!
Thanks!
I am going to LEARN THIS CONCERTO.
Normally i dont really care for Ma's works, but i really like his take on this masterpiece
yo yo ma es uno de los mejores musicos del mundo y gran interprete
The glissando at 6:14 gets me every time
I never considered that Puerto Rico had a major orchestra... especially one this good!
It seems that Yo Yo Ma can easily play this in in sleep... never looks at his fingerboard, which I would find nearly impossible.
dieser Mann ist unglaublich
Wonderful!!!

Cello concerto in h minor 1st. our Antonín Dvořák! :)
I actually transposed it note for note, using a music writing program. grewling work that took a really long time. worth it though
@litmanovus I'm not a cellist either but I think this is a great interpretation, musically or technicaly.

@ChucklezTM For a moment I thought of not uploading it because of the strange 'radio thing" ("spurious interference")
I actually did take up cello to learn this piece. Too long a transition so I just learned this piece on violin.
in an interview Yo-Yo Ma said that he loves being on stage
could someone please tell me what that violinist is doing at 8:40?
David Neth bitting his fingernail
he obviously was in a good mood that day, hes all smiling :D
He isn´t using his Stradivari here (Du Pré`s cello) he is using his Montagnana.
Come on, who will share the Dvorak concert by Jacqueline?
Please!!!!!!
5:07..... O_O chordgasms!!!!!
What a wonderfull player he is...almost makes me want to switch to cello!
Oh wow I love the way he plays this in this old recording. So much more energy than his more recent ones (of this same concerto, that is). cierto
And convincing!
wow ive never heard this recording, cool. I know what ill be doing for the next 40 minutes =].
Terrible camera ange at 6:48. Other than that, this is awesome!
No!
The mayority of the players are puertoricans!
this cant be happening!!!! yo yo ma came to P.R...BUT WHEN!!???? and i didnt go !!! right now im the most frustated woman on earth!!!!
at 5:40, the second theme, his face exemplifies exactly how i feel when i try to play but when i get to the part at 6:05 i mess up and ruin the mood...
Coincidentally, the second fluatist looks like Antonin Dvorak himself. :D
Amazing performance. Rostropovich owns this concerto though

I know Ma is still young, but Rostropovich was much better
That is ok!
That is "emergency finger nail cutting" with teeth. The next analysis could be if he plays better after the clipping!! LOL
Not really ... just a God of Cello :))
8: 50.... :[
Yo-Yo Ma is God.
Yo Yo Ma is always respected, but in this performance he is too "edgy" for my personal taste.
Check out this concerto with Daniel Shafran, you may like
@huarachetes You'r so wrong LOL
The most impetous and
everybody wants to play cello but... lol
I prefer jaqueline du pre, she just impact you with the first note
En el minuta 8.45 un violinista se come las uñas, tiene hambre jaja
