as a college student majoring in entrepreneurship and global business I think social media has allowed me to apply my degree to/in the real world, on my own terms, learning how to create and market myself as a business from the ground up.

She was definitely a huge part (also not sure if you caught it, but they did show a clip of hers in there somewhere during a voiceover) but just because she wasn't mentioned by name in the video doesn't mean that there aren't people who still remember her early youtube days.
I feel like even if she was contacted for this video she probably wouldn't have done it. She still posts on her IG and seems to be pretty focused on her EM cosmetics line. She's just not as big of a social media influencer as she was before.

1. They showed Huda's bakery line stolen from Beauty Bakery
2. They showed Manny MUA when he is still getting backlash from unjustly copyright claiming a Teaspill video
3. The showed Jeffree when he still had eyebrows

I remember when I used to go through fashion magazines and read the small print that contained all the credits for the print shoots. Pat McGrath, Kevyn Aucoin, Bobbi Brown, Francois Nars, Laura Mercier, Mary Greenwell, Sandy Linter, Gucci Westman, Aaaron de Mey, Way Bandy etc.
For a subject that I care nothing about, this was informative. I learned a new appreciation for it. Thanks Phil!

I'm currently in school to become an fx makeup artist with the end goal of working on set for major movies and TV shows. I would never have even considered trying this form of makeup had it not been for makeup youtubers like Mykie. They introduced me to my passion. They literally changed the course of my life forever. And I'll never stop being thankful for that.

I'm currently studying to become a professional makeup artist and one of the first things our teacher told us was to start an Instagram account just for makeup and to take pictures of every makeup look we do to start gaining followers that could become clients.
Andrea Vilca yes! It annoys me when I have prospective makeup artist hitting me up for their services, but no relevant content on IG.
What does studying makeup entail? Is art school expensive?
@@Revolt_west you learn about face shapes, how to contour/correct, sanitation, undertones, skin care, how to recognize skin problems (wrinkles, excessive oil production, acne, ingrown hairs, cold sores, etc), etc. I took a couple years of cosmetology and plan to continue my education later on. There's a lot more to it but that's what we focused on so far.

I work as a social media manager for a museum (among several other things in said museum). Social media is critical in modern museum practice. It’s how we develop visitorship by maintaining engagement and building that relationship. While some visitors might join our email list or become members to stay engaged, realistically, email open and engagement rates and abysmal. Social reach and engagement are where it’s at. The people who maintain a relationship with us are on our Instagram and Facebook, not our email or picking up the newspapers where our ads sometimes run. Social’s basically free yet has absolutely to most bang for the buck when used right in a nonprofit.

I’m mainly a photo assistant by trade. I’ve seen plenty of social media make up artists that show up to pro shoots and have no clue how to work on a face other than themselves, especially if it’s a person of a different color than they are.
I’m all for people hustling to get where they are, but I can’t stress how important it is to master your trade and how to do it safely.
Phil covers these stories because he just really loves makeup.
As someone who’s licensed in the beauty field, it’s important to remember that being good at makeup doesn’t make you a professional. I see so many people selling services without a license, which is illegal. You can get experience without schooling but you can’t “go pro” without it.
Thank you! I've been a licensed hairstylist/mua for 18 years and these people on RUclips grind my gears. Just because they walked into a mac store and got hired does not make them a professional mua.
Yes! I had to bring some MUA wannabe down to earth about this. Also, using words like beat yo face is not professional, same girl i just mentioned, nor does attitude get you clients. You have to be professional and able to cater to all age/cultural ranges as a real pro!

I LOVED this video and I'm so grateful that someone has talked about it seriously. I don't think I ever thought about how many people actually don't know anything about the makeup industry and still don't get how huge and serious it is. At this point in time, if a brand (not just beauty but ANY brand) doesn't have a social media presence (especially on instagram) I really don't bother with it, because they're not keeping up with the times. And it's nice to be able to read comments and see what problems/praises people have for the product, how they use it/wear it, whether they like it or not, etc. So I think social media has played a huge role in making makeup more accessible and interesting and diverse for everybody.

The way a traditional studio artist makes money now is different than before social media. Artists have a platform to share their art and gain their own community and following. Before this, studio artists had to get accepted into galleries in order to get their name and product out there.
