    I've seen some people giving this bad reviews because they don't understand Ohm's Law, and spew that old "solid state watts" vs "tube watts" nonsense.
    170W @ 4 ohms
    85W @ 8 ohms
    42.5W @ 16 ohms
    So ... if you have a 16 ohm 4x12 cab and want to use this thing at full power. Wire the 4 speakers in parallel, you'll have a nominal load of 4 ohms and thus full power. You're welcome.

    Way back in 1994 I learned that solid state amps are able to compete with all tube amps, tonewise and when it comes to a simple setup. I joined a metal band then, both guitarists used the Rocktron Velocity preamp and a solid state power amp, one made by Rocktron, one beeing a simple PA poweramp with 200 Watt. Into a 212" cab those simple rigs sounded awesome.
    OK, nothing beats the feel of an all tube poweramp, be it for guitar or bass.
    But those solid state solutions are great, too - even when it comes to guitar.

      Kong and Basses in this day and age 95% of people can’t tell the difference between a Kemper and a real amp. It doesn’t even make sense financially to buy a real amp in this day and age unless it’s a one of a kind type head

    • @skatterpro
      @skatterpro 5 лет назад +3

      @@transient442 It never made sense to spend anything above bare minimum, say 100w, amps and that was if you were a touring musician. The entire music gear business is a business of passion. Even your Kemper is an overpriced piece of gear NO ONE needs. But, the thing is that this is not about direct value, but about artistic expression, and what ever floats your boat.. well.. floats your boat. Only you can put the monetary value on that, but don't kid yourself that any piece of gear is a financially "good deal".

    • @transient442
      @transient442 5 лет назад

      GurktheBrutal okay there’s a difference between wants and needs, we are talking about a hobby here. I’m saying if you have the money to buy either a real amp or a Kemper it doesn’t make sense to buy a real amp considering a Kemper can replicate multiple amps to a tee hence the reason I said it doesn’t make sense financially to buy a real amp. Yes you can get decent tones from a 100 watt solid state amp but you’d be lying to yourself if you were to say that the tone would be as detailed and accurate as a Kemper, there’s a noticeable difference between the two that justifies the price difference.

    • @skatterpro
      @skatterpro 5 лет назад +2

      @@transient442 The point is that if YOU notice a difference, and YOU feel it is worth the investment, it definitely isn't ruled out.
      Just like you say there's a noticeable sound difference between solid state and your digital modeler, there's a subjectively noticeable sound difference between a real tube head and a Kemper.
      It's ALL about if you're willing to pay for what you, subjectively, considers an improvement. To say there's any realistic reason behind buying anything but a 10 w practice amp is lying to yourself. That distinction does not stop at 'Kemper'.

    • @transient442
      @transient442 5 лет назад +1

      GurktheBrutal actually it kinda does stop at Kemper. There’s plenty of blind test out there with a kemper vs real amp and most people end up thinking the kemper is the real amp. The best example of this is andertons video on this.
      To say the difference between a 10w practice amp and a 100 watt solid state amp is equal to the difference of a kemper vs real amp is straight up wrong lol maybe your ears are broken or something

The Fryette PS2 was very good and better then the Orange, but the best imo was the SD 170 for a Helix. The EQ controls on the 170 are VERY sensitive and adds a quick tweak when needed to any Helix model. Its sort of a powered EQ with great responce. Thats the one I kept and use for a Helix.

    If anyone doubts the capability of the 170 W model, I've used it with a regular 8 Ohm Recto 412 with an Axe FX and its more volume than you need. Toe to toe with a Mesa Mark V or EVH 5150III 50W with a metal drummer. If you at a venue and the drummer is getting miced, get your cab miced too ya dingus. More input level will make it significantly louder too, so I set the PS170 to about 40% and use the axe fx volume knob.

      Hey there Javi, I know this is an old post but since you didn't get an answer from Ola I thought I'd give you one! Yes the PowerStage is an amp. You can plug your guitar directly into it and then plug it into your Marshall cabinet. You can plug your overdrive and any other pedals into it and it will work just like plugging into any clean guitar amp. I have used the PowerStage exactly like this, with overdrive and distortion pedals into and then into a cabinet and it works great, and it gets very loud! I have even just plugged my guitar directly into the PowerStage and used it simply that way to get a very dry and clean sound when I needed it. It's very useful! Hope this helps, sorry for such a late reply to your question. Cheers

    Sound needs to be 3dBa louder for the human ear to notice an increase in sound. However for every 10dBa increase sound will be twice as loud. The maximum I have measured guitar amps was a set of 4 100 watt stacks and it was 130 dBa.

    Ola man I love you but at the volumes you are playing at you REALLY should be wearing earplugs. Anything over 75db is a maybe, anything over 85 is a probably and over 95, hello tinnitus, not to even mention the 120db? You were hitting. I can't tell if you do wear them or not but you can get plugs that provide a good db cut but not much of a frequency cut or even the custom earplugs don't cost a huge amount these days. Love you bro but hearing damage is permanent and certainly not cool. Cheers.

    Perhaps try using the dB(C) weighting if it's available on your meter to measure the peak loudness more accurately, measurements using A weighting above 100dB SPL won't be as accurate generally speaking.

      I've used many power amps with my Helix (including power sections of various valve amps, and a valve power amp), but this wipes the floor with all of them thanks to the active EQ - it's an absolute life-saver at gigs, where you have to adapt to the room on the fly. Using Helix -> this -> guitar cab, it's indistinguishable from a real amp as far as I'm concerned. That's a very, very good thing :)
      Also, it's violently loud even into an 8 ohm cab (when it's putting out about 85-90W). I tried a volume test, and chickened out when I could no longer hear our drummer.

    • @peterrovaniemi138
      @peterrovaniemi138 5 лет назад

      @@digiscream Do you run it with Preamp section only into the powerstage, or full amp head sim into the powerstage?
      I id try some other custom non-tube power amp a year back with my preamps and it didnt sound as "ampy" as going through the tube power amp section of an amp head.

    • @digiscream
      @digiscream 5 лет назад +2

      Also, given that I've got a lightweight Matrix 2x12", the fact that this fits in my rucksack with the Helix means I can carry everything from the car in one go and be set up before everybody else has finished lugging their gear in :D

    • @digiscream
      @digiscream 5 лет назад +1

      @@peterrovaniemi138 - I use the full amp models, because it's very neutral as a power amp and I only use the EQ very lightly to correct for stage resonance and damping.

    Hate to be the safety police but you were regularly hittin 105 db. At those levels it doesn't take much exposure to do permanent damage to your hearing. At least have anyone around use hearing protection. Nothing sexy or rock and roll about hearing loss or tinnitus.
