I wasn't a Bruno Mars fan when he first came out. But the kid grows by leaps and bounds every time he releases something new, and his unparalleled ability to collaborate makes him the best dude out there.
You *absolutely* should watch Bruno Mars’ performance on Súper bowl 2014. That’s when I realized what a fantastic musician, song writer and artist he is.
@@caprise-music6722 yeah me too. couldn't believe how awesome he is. Not just a great writer and entertainer (singing/dancing) but the way the songs were all put together was perfect. Before that show, I was like yeah he's good. Now I know. lol
My son is an exceptionally talented southern rock guitarist, singer, and song writer…and he’s always vexed because what he wants to play sounds like his influences….I keep trying to tell him that there’s only so many notes! I’ve sent him his video to help him understand. It’s not theft when one is appreciative of one’s icons, yet producing something new.
Hearing you guys talk about not remembering the verses really demonstrates the inherent difference between composers and lyricists. I know you were talking about the melodic line, but the lyrics (which stuck in my head immediately) fit to that. Lyrically, the verses function in the same way you're talking about with the instrumentation, they clearly reference Motown and funk (sometimes very directly), but they break it up with modern word choice, idiom, and a postmodern self-awareness. I think it's best exemplified in second verse: The first couple lines _Got your hair in the wind and your skin glistenin' / I can smell your sweet perfume_ wouldn't be out of place in a Marvin Gaye song (and Bruno really leans into it in his vocal timbre), then _Mmm, you smell better than a barbecue_ Bruno and Anderson are winking at the listener (not even Bruno Mars could get away with saying that to a person in real life). They're saying: "yes, most of the lyrics of this song are cliche and a bit silly, and we all know it, but sometimes things are cliche because they just feel *right* ", then they hammer that home by referencing Earth, Wind, and Fire's Shining Star _Oh, superstar is what you are_ (a song whose verses are literal cliches) before settling back into the more traditional _I'm your biggest fan / If you're lookin' for a man, sugar, here I am_
Gamble and Huff are probably so proud of these two guys. With “Leave The Door Open” and “Skate”, you can hear everything that made the Philly Soul and Motown sounds so great back in the day. The deceptively difficult balance between simple and fun lyrics that reflected popular phrases and trends with beautiful chords/instruments/strings underneath those vocals and their melodies is everything Gamble and Huff helped to popularize in the 70’s. Silk Sonic knows their history, and we’re so lucky to be experiencing this in real-time.
To understand Bruno’s musical background is to know his family’s musical history. His uncles had a band that performed nightly vaudevilles in Waikiki impersonating all the Motown and Pop artists from the 50s through the 90’s. Bruno grew up, lived and breathe these musical theories. He’s been able to “scary pocket” music his entire life.
You guys are just awesome! First, I had no idea "Leave the Door Open" was filmed in that studio! I didn't catch that! I am 64 years old and when I first heard "Skate" and "Leave the Door Open" I was so excited! I haven't heard anything even remotely so smooth and R&B since the 70's! Every time I listen to these two new songs, I am instantly young again and getting ready to go to the club for the evening! Fun! I literally cannot wait for their new album to come out. But I enjoy this reaction you guys do - and always look forward to a new one. Today you each listed such great ideas for music you were listening to, that I was frantically searching for a pen to write it down! I'm going to check them out. Great commentary, guys! Thank You! Bruno Mars is an expert at extracting tones and timbres from 70's soul songs. Without a doubt he remixes them and makes them his. Sounds so great. Some Barry White orchestration and some MFSB ft The Three Degrees TSOP The Sound Of Philadelphia Vibes as well. Anderson Paak on vocals and drums is so delicious and I think Bruno not only brings out the best in him but has himself taken his style to a whole new level on his flow, feel and vocals.

"I wanna get to know ya" into Al Green's Let's Stay Together bridge. Not a rip off in any way at all. More of a tip of the hat. I'm going to see Genesis for my birthday in November on "The Last Domino?" tour. I'd love for y'all to give a listen to some Genesis. How, how, how have I totally been clueless about the existence of this channel???! Such an awesome, interesting, and in-depth discussion. Really loved the concise explanations and examples of the musical terms and theory. Awesome to hear you discussing these kinds of things that our band and others think about all the time. --Jer of the band Mitch the Needle
How am I just finding your channel now? This channel is fun! I definitely appreciate the moments where you do a little explaination and bring everyone into the convo, but overall this is like sitting in the livingroom having hang with fellow musos.
I want to give each of you a hug for making an entire video dedicated to the genius of this song -- my NUMBER ONE on an Evening With Silk Sonic. "Love, joy, and fun..." yessss Silk Sonic in a nutshell.
Anderson paak is the man, he's consistently growing and expanding as an artist. Bruno feels a bit like a dude with a great voice, but has no focus in what he wants, no path. His music is all over the place. With paak tough, he's flourishing. This shit is great!
Can you guys do more classics? Most of the newer music you've covered has been great, but I would love your take on more stuff that's managed to survive 30-50 years.
I really like these videos, from great musicians talking about great music. However, I'd say, that even though the Motown influence is palpable (as in most Soul and Pop music), I think most of the Silk Sonic aesthetic comes from the Philadelphia Soul of the early 70s, the string arrangements, the sophisticated harmony, the unusual rhythmic accents, the psychedelic touches, all staples of that sound. Amazing album, my favorite of the year, without a doubt. Keep making this great content! All the best from Chile.
I personally know nothing about music theory but I enjoyed watching them get excited about this song. It's wonderful to see how passionate they talk about it.
That studio gear recommandation at the end is amazing i would love u guys to do that in the future as well! Your pedal jack convinced and i immediately bought it! Thanks
I would love if you could review Kygo, especially "Love Me Now". It's a simple song from chords perspective, but so much is happening instrumentally it would be interesting to dissect . I would love to hear your opinions about EDM world and what emotions it brings to listeners and musicians. ♥
This is real music to me. Lush with orchestration and precise, expert arrangement, gorgeous percussion from Anderson and Bruno, sublime vocals and harmonies. Perfect music. Also, I LOVE BRITTANY HOWARD ♥️Just wanted to write that 😂
I'd love to hear some discussion of Bowie, especially a comparison of some classic stuff vs. some of the Black Star stuff, or even an "evolution of Bowie" piece. Alternatively, I have been listening to A LOT of half*alive lately, so that would be fun.
There’s just something about Anderson’s drumming, his feel is just perfect.
It's pure Groove.

my recommendation however would be 70s library music specifically (people like james clarke, alan hawkshaw, keith mansfield, etc)
How, how, how have I totally been clueless about the existence of this channel???! Such an awesome, interesting, and in-depth discussion. Really loved the concise explanations and examples of the musical terms and theory. Awesome to hear you discussing these kinds of things that our band and others think about all the time.

How am I just finding your channel now? This channel is fun! I definitely appreciate the moments where you do a little explaination and bring everyone into the convo, but overall this is like sitting in the livingroom having hang with fellow musos.
Loving that you include music recommendations, this is a fantastic show.
I never could grasp the music technicalities but I enjoy listening to you all discuss it. :) Thanks.
This shit is great!
thank you for making me hear music in a completely different way! I'd love a Queen episode... under pressure and somebody to love?
I'm loving the music recommendation bit of each episode.
Can you guys do more classics? Most of the newer music you've covered has been great, but I would love your take on more stuff that's managed to survive 30-50 years.
Yep
I don't understand what y'all are talking about but I'm so hooked into how you guys are so excited taking about it
I really like these videos, from great musicians talking about great music.
The keyboard! So genius!!!! We learnin’ AND we vibin’!!!
The great artists know how to make you wait for it.
The power of a rest note.
I love the analysis.
Great channel.
Smoking Out the Window 🤣🤣🤣 He-lar-ee-us. I can’t with them.
This is beautiful soul music 🎶. Give us more please 🙏 💜 ❤
I personally know nothing about music theory but I enjoyed watching them get excited about this song. It's wonderful to see how passionate they talk about it.
I love this whole album, i looooooooooove it! And you can hear the love of music all over each and every song.
I believe we are all waiting for "Smoking Out The Window" at this point.. or, even better, the whole album, since it's coming out this Friday
Broooo after last night, 777, fly as me…this whole album 🔥🔥🔥🔥
That studio gear recommandation at the end is amazing i would love u guys to do that in the future as well!
Your pedal jack convinced and i immediately bought it!
Thanks
I would love if you could review Kygo, especially "Love Me Now". It's a simple song from chords perspective, but so much is happening instrumentally it would be interesting to dissect . I would love to hear your opinions about EDM world and what emotions it brings to listeners and musicians. ♥
i love you guys breaking it all down. i think of harmony and a song, and it's the next part of the on going discussion..
This is real music to me. Lush with orchestration and precise, expert arrangement, gorgeous percussion from Anderson and Bruno, sublime vocals and harmonies. Perfect music. Also, I LOVE BRITTANY HOWARD ♥️Just wanted to write that 😂
Like everyone, I am very excited for this album! Thanks for the analysis!
I'd love to hear some discussion of Bowie, especially a comparison of some classic stuff vs. some of the Black Star stuff, or even an "evolution of Bowie" piece. Alternatively, I have been listening to A LOT of half*alive lately, so that would be fun.
That's it, the vocals are the horns for a funk song! I knew it was something.
