  • This video demonstrates how to perform an Independent Samples t-test in SPSS. The video first describes the context of Independent samples t-test, followed by necessary assumptions check and demonstration of the t-test. It also shows how to calculate the effect size for Independent sample t-test and provides templates for reporting results according to APA style 6th edition. You can download the practice data set and writing template (link below).
    It is a parametric test to compare sample means of a continuous variable for two independent groups.
    What do we need?
    One categorical, independent variable with two levels (e.g., sex: male/female).
    One continuous, dependent variable (e.g., Internet addiction as measured by IAT).
    Assumptions
    (i) Scale of measurement-Continuous (dependent variable); (ii) Independence of observation; (iii) Random Sampling; (iv) Normality; and (v) Homogeneity of variance

    Assalamualaikum Sir. Thank you so much for creating this course, may Allah bless you with more knowledge! I wanted to know, how do we decide which statistical test to use for any data set? What are the deciding factors? Also, can you recommend one book for statistics (beginners) for research in health science? I am lost in all the mountains of information provided by the internet!

    What is the difference between Levene’s test for equality of variances significance level and T test for equality means significance level?

    • @AzharulIslam
      @AzharulIslam  3 года назад

      Good question. Levene's test for equality of variances indicates if there is any significant difference between variances of two groups' scores. It is an assumption to meet while conducting an independent sample t-test, although SPSS gives alternative output if this assumption is violated. T-test for equality of means is actually the final t-test result which determines if the two group means are statistically different or not.

    I want to know the differences between 1 tailed/ 2 tailed test.

    • @AzharulIslam
      @AzharulIslam  4 года назад +2

      Should you choose the one-tailed or two-tailed test, depends on the research question or hypotheses. If, for example, your hypothesis is, the male would score higher than female, you need to choose a one-tailed test. For the current case, the null hypothesis was there was no difference between male and female; therefore, we selected a two-tailed test. For further explanation with the underlying statistical procedure, please consult any basic statistics book.

    Sir,
    we know that if continuous variable are not normally distributed than data should be presented as median (IQR).But when we do normality test with factor list(govt, private, NGO) we see individual normality results.
    Example : continuous variable (dialysis charge)- not distrusted - present it as median(IQR)
    Dialysis charge by categories-
    Govt(12)- distributed - present it as mean‌‌‌/SD
    Private(72)- not distributed -median (IQR)
    NGO(15)-not distibuted-median (IQR)
    I show my descriptive statistics result like this. Isn’t it right?
    Sir, have there any mandatory sample size for cat. variable to do normality test?
    As my data is not normally distributed so I do non parametric kruskal wallis test with dunn's comparison for post hoc analysis to see significant Between dialysis charge vs cat.
    and also to see significant Between cat. like govt vs private, P vs ngo, G vs NGO.
    Have there any mandatory criteria for sample size of K-W/ pairwise comparison test?
    Total size: 99
    Govt: 12
    Private: 72
    NGO: 15

    • @AzharulIslam
      @AzharulIslam  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for your question. First, it is better to present the descriptive statistics in a uniform format, e.g., all in IQR. Second, there are no hard rules for sample size in each group for Kruskal Wallis ANOVA. However, it is good to have a nearly equal sample size in each group.

    • @AzharulIslam
      @AzharulIslam  3 года назад

      Your choice of test will depend on your research objective. For example, if your objective is to see whether men and women differ in self-compassion, you would do independent sample t-test. If you want to see whether self-compassion of men changes between pre and post counseling, you would do paired sample t-test.
