Transforming data: Compute and Recode in SPSS

- We need to transform data into different forms as per statistical/research needs. There are two widely used transformation procedures in SPSS called compute and recode.
We use compute command to create a new variable from existing variables by using various formulas, e.g., sum, mean, subtraction, etc.
We use the recode function in SPSS for several reasons. Such as
To transforming or recoding numeric/scale variables into converted numeric or categorical variables. For example, change the scale variable 'total score of Internet addiction' into the categorical variable 'Internet user category: minimal, moderate and excessive'.
To combine or merge various variables
To reverse score for negatively coded scale items
To replace missing values
To treat outliers in SPSS
We can recode into the same variable or recode into different variables. Each method has its merits and demerits. I have explained this issue in the video.

Yes, you need to check scale's scoring instruction for which items to be re-coded. Each scale has unique scoring instruction.

Sir, scale gulo ki same hote hobe? Suppose ekta item er scale strongly agree, disagree and onno item er scale satisfied, dissatisfied erokom thakle ki sum kora jabe?
the scale developers can answer this question. Normally, any psychological test or scale should have a clear guideline on the scoring method of that particular scale/test.

স্যার, কোন ডাটা এর "Mean" মানে "গড়" বোঝায়, "Standard Deviation" এবং "Variance" এর ফলাফল কোন ডাটার কি অর্থ বের করে একটু বলবেন প্লিজ?? ক্যালকুলেশন এর নিয়ম টা জানি কিন্তু এর ফলাফলটা কি অর্থ বহন করে সেটা বুঝতে একটু সমস্যা।
হ্যালো সবুজ, সুন্দর প্রশ্ন। Standard deviation and variance মূলত বোঝায়, গড় থেকে একটি ডাটা সেটের অন্য ডাটা পয়েন্টগুলো কত বিস্তৃত আছে। Standard deviation/variance বেশি হলে বোঝায় ডাটাসেটের বিস্তৃতি বেশি, কম হলে বিস্তৃতি কম। ধরুন, আপনারা পাঁচজন বন্ধুর কোনো একদিনের পকেট খরচের টাকা গড় করলেন এবং পেলেন আপনাদের গড় পকেট মানি ২০০ টাকা। এখন যদি, Standard deviation হয় ১০, তাহলে বলা যায়, আপনারা পাচজনেরি পকেটের অবস্থা কাছাকাছি (১৭০ থেকে ২৩০ এর মধ্যে)। আর যদি Standard deviation হয় ৫০, তাহলে বলা যায়, আপনাদের মধ্যে কেউ খুব ধনী, তার পকেটে আছে অনেক বেশি টাকা, অন্যকারো হয়ত পকেট একেবারে খালি।

@@AzharulIslam Thanks a lot sir...Actually My scale has 28 items with 7 reversed item.. It will be easy for me if I code differently from the start so that I don't need to recode the variables later..
