Thank you Richard. I have my test on Tuesday and I heard my test Centre often gives this maneuver during the test. Your explanation is clear and covers everything I wondered about. Legend!

I completely messed this up on a mock test last week, he asked me to reverse 30 ft, I had no idea how to judge the distance and he had to encourage me to drive further 3 times. This video helped with the confusion I get over steering too . We've moved my test back to January 4th now:( xxx

My son failed today on this manoeuvre for not stopping when a car came towards him on his side of the road, even though it passed him safely. Failed for reverse right - observations. I feel that is very harsh having seen your video and this was on a busy B road.
very good video as always, actually you can see through the window of the car in front to see if there are any car coming. won't work if the car in front is a van with no back window though
I find it helpful (providing the road is straight) moving forward a bit to make sure the car is straight then reversing back straight, means more thinking is put into observation rather than steering adjustment
Does the uk not have those little round blind spot mirrors you stick on your side mirrors? They help so much. The are under 10 aud dollar's. Fantastic for parking. I highly recommend 😊
Thank you ,fantastic details with the steering wheel and mirrors - we need help with this 🚘👌💗just wondering if the examiner asks you this ,(and of course they know the routes ) do they know there are suitable places coming up ,or is it up to us - will we fail if we get to the end of the road without performing the manoeuvre? They will normally tell you a specific place to stop like near the lamp post etc but sometimes they just ask you to pull up in a safe place on the right. They only ask this when they can see there are safe places. If there are no safe places and you don't stop you will not fail.

Lots of sites say you need to "park" first before doing the reversing section of the maneuver. What does park mean? Simply get into position, or go into P gear and pull the handbrake?
You can put it into park and pull the handbrake up after stopping. But if the examiner asks you to reverse before you've had a chance to put it in park, you can go straight to reverse. Park and parking brake (handbrake) is for parking.

Hi Richard, when reversing two car lengths, where shall I look? My instructor taught me looking out the rear window most of the time, and in between make a quick glance at the camera screen (instead of the side mirror) only to check I'm keeping a proper space with the curb. I did that in my test, made 3 quick glances of the camera screen but got a driving fault with comment that "I glanced too much on the camera while I shall mainly focus on the rear window"! I google about it, checked the DVSA website etc and there're different sayings about this. I'm lost about what to do in my next test...... Thanks a lot for your advice!
You can look where you want as long as you look around enough to notice anyone approaching you before they get to you. I get my pupils to mainly focus on the mirrors for accuracy with quick regular 360-degree checks around for approaching hazards.

In Great Britain you can adjust, it's about finishing the manoeuvre safely within a reasonable time. It's not about how you do it or if you need several movements.
If you drive on 4th or 5th or any gear, and suddenly you want to stop the car an reverse it , should you shift to neutral gear then to reverse gear or you can shift to reverse gear directly? And in automatic if you are on D should you shift to neutral gear then to reverse gear or you can shift to reverse gear directly?
When cars are passing you on the left (on opposite side of the road), do you have to stop and wait till they have gone past you and then continue when nothings coming as I keep getting told different things by different instructor’s so now unsure what to do? Thanks
If you're not affecting the car then you should be able to continue. Make sure you notice them and give way to cars on your side of the road as they have to drive around you. Yes, but you usually need some steering input as the road moves a bit and you're rarely exactly straight.

If you hit it hard enough or mounted it then it would be a fail. It's up to the examiner how hard is hard enough to consititue a fail.

When you have gone back far enough they tell you to stop.
