@@GraceMandarinChinese Super helpful! 謝謝!Also, the information about the QR code tickets - I need to get myself a receipt app! Would you recommend one? Usually I'm just travelling for work, so don't need to use the garbage trucks, but the music they play is quite funny to me and I was confused what the noise was the first time I arrived in Taiwan. I like how in the 7-11 you can ask them to microwave your food for you (or add hot water to noodles! So convenient and something I'm not used to in the UK!
Really appreciate all the pop ups for the terms! Must have taken a lot of work, but this is great for those who want to make flashcards out of these terms!
This type of video is an excellent study material, and the pop-up cards are an award-winning idea. Would love if you did more videos like this talking about different topics, thank you!!

I love this type of video in Chinese with popups. I hope you had a chance to experience 7-11 in the US when you were there. It's much more interesting and convenient in Taiwan. Also, I think Taiwanese expressions like 真的假的 and 我跟你講 are funny and interesting.
I was told that in Taiwan it is polite to pay for things by giving cash with both hands. It's a really nice gesture of etiquette that I found people appreciated from a foreign visitor.
This is great content. Easy to consume but hard enough to learn things. This kind of upper intermediate level is hard to come by. The word bubbles are done really nicely too.
Our family moved back to Taipei when I was in elementary school and at first I thought the trash trucks were ice cream trucks. I wanted ice cream but got trash instead! They play the same darn jingle!
I ran into this problem the first I went to Taiwan, we followed the jingle trying to find the ice cream truck and we're greatly disappointed but also highly amused
I enjoy watching this video. I am studying Mandarin in Taiwan for almost 9 months. Now immediate high level. This video verified how much I have learned, while I was here from A2 level to B2 level. Also discover the same differences that you mention here.
thank you so much for videos like this! some chinese teaching channels do not teach about culture and it can cause cultural misunderstanding. i really appreciate learning about taiwan culture too. most channels have mandatory English subtitles in the video, with no option to turn off. for me it makes the video too easy because it does not practice my listening. i appreciate your closed captions because now people can use it if they need it or turn it off.
I enjoyed watching your video, Grace !You asked how some things are regulated in other countries. Well, in Germany we also have garbage trucks, but we don't wait for these trucks, we have garbage cans at every house. The days for collecting the garbage are fixed and you have to put the garbage can by the roadside in the morning, where the workers empty it into the bin lorry. The special thing here, however, is that we have different colored garbage cans for different types of waste. There is organic waste (brown garbage can), recycling waste (yellow garbage can), paper waste (blue garbage can) and residual waste (black garbage can). This is very time-consuming and expensive, but is intended to reduce waste.
Omg as an ABC whose trying to improve my mandarin this is so helpful! And it also helped me learn about Taiwan things! I've only visited once so I definitely knew about the 7-11's but the other elements were new to me. I added a few vocob words like língshí to my google translate too!
I am from Japan. I love watching your videos. I have been to Taiwan many times. Also, I have flown with EVA Airways 94 times. However, I have not visited Taiwan since I went there in March 2020. I want to visit Taipei and eat fried rice at 松江市場.
This is such a great format! The effort that was put in this video is massive. I love this content as I can practice my listening skills and also learn more interesting things about Taiwan! Been living here for almost 2 years now and I still find new and amusing things as I learned in this video now. Thank you, teacher Grace!
As someone who is currently in Taiwan to learn mandarin, I thought your video was such a good opportunity for practicing my listening skills as well as learning new useful, everyday vocab (thank you so much for adding those vocab cards on the screen btw, that was esp helpful)!! I hope you can make more videos like this in the future:))
been in Taiwan for months and been learning Mandarin ever since and I'm so happy that I can already understand what you were saying while following the traditional Chinese subtitle. Hope you can make more videos while speaking Chinese, it really helps a lot with 聽力
I love this video sm with speaking in Chinese the whole time! It’s the perfect level for me and the Flashcards are great. Pls continue the series :))❤️ thanks for your hard work!
Now it makes sense to me why my Taiwanese parents sometimes take out their trash last minute in the United States. I didn't think it could be a cultural reason haha!
I really like this style of videos!! It's so useful to learn new words and get a better understanding of the language while learning something interesting too
Thank you Grace 老師 this new format is so much better. It works for both beginners and intermediate students. As an upper intermediate learner it’s quite hard to find the right listening materials sometimes as a lot of teachers cater to beginners and they speak too much English. Especially if I want to listen to more Taiwanese accent/words. I only found out about the 發票 recently when I went to Taiwan, we gave away our receipts. Also regarding the 飲料店 we also noticed that there are many restaurants who don’t offer drinks so I guess it’s quite handy to be able to buy drinks nearby, even though it’s not healthy but a lot of people here also often drink soft drinks/soda so …. I guess it’s the same everywhere.
I absolutely loved the format of this video!! I love the pop ups that show what vocabulary you are using with both Taiwanese and Chinese Madarin, it was super helpful! It was also wonderful getting to know more about Taiwanese culture! Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this!! 💖
This is amazing im taiwanese american and since i live with my spouse now i feel my mandarin slipping away 😅 theres also more modern words esp to do with the internet that i never really learned
I really enjoyed this video, the editing was really helpful! I lived in Taiwan for a year and experienced most of these, except I didn't know about 乖乖, that was interesting to learn
thank you for making this, i hope it becomes a regular series! getting the listening practice in an interesting cultural subject is very engaging and motivating, 谢谢!
Absolutely loved this video. There's not enough content out there about the beautiful and unique culture of Taiwan! Also great listening practice. Thank you. ❤
I think it depends. If you’re busy with studies or meeting deadlines, it’s convenient to just leave your garbage outside for pickup. But when you’re not busy, then Taiwan’s style looks more enjoyable. I think it also keeps the streets cleaner. Cities in the States often have garbage bags left on the sidewalks, which is less sanitary. Socializing with neighbors would be fun, but I think the sound and look of the truck add to the experience too. The music can brighten your mood and the trucks look prettier than the ones in the States. They’re also yellow, the color most associated with happiness. If the US implemented something similar, it would feel weird to socialize next to our plain, ugly garbage trucks😂 I would definitely need nicer trucks with music haha. Anyway, I think “Chat in Chinese” would make an excellent video series! I’m sure there are plenty of interesting topics to discuss and it’s a great way to teach vocabulary on different topics.
yeah i didn't know about that fapiao thing until i went to taiwan recently and my taiwanese friend told me about it, at first i gave her all my receipts which according to her was a pain in the S but after awhile she just sent me her barcode and it made everything easier lol.
I really really liked this video! It was interesting and informative, it was great listening practice, and it had the word cards. I feel like this format also helps bring out your personality more than other videos which was cool to see! It felt like a chat well done Grace! I hope this video gets a lot more views!!
Thank you for your kind words! I had a lot of fun making it, but I know it's rather hard to get many views with this type of video. However, the warm feedback from all of you really encourages me to keep going! 🥰
You're so welcome! I think it's cool that you've found a way to support yourself doing something you enjoy and find fulfilling while helping others. Isn't that what we all want in life?@GraceMandarinChinese
Where I live in Australia we don't get garbage collection at all (and have to pay for the tip!! What are we even paying rates for?) so having to wait on the curb for a garbage truck would actually be a massive improvement lol
In my country, Brazil (or at least in my city), we just need to leave the trash outside and the garbage truck workers get them. Doesn't even need to be at the exact time the truck comes. We can leave it outside earlier.
Hi Grace.. the garbage truck thing is really something. When I first came to Taipei and heard of its sound from afar, I thought it was some ice cream selling uncle 😆 In Indonesia there are some ice cream sellers who sells ice cream while playing music. Later, I learned that I had to be home before 8 pm if I didn't want to miss the truck 😁
Many years ago, in Taiwan , I heard what I thought was the sweet melody of an ice cream truck, so I raced down from the top of my apartment building, and then outside scanning everywhere for the mysterious, unseen ice cream truck before finally realizing that the charming sound was actually coming from a garbage truck, lol.
I love this video! Please make more (where you only speak Mandarin). Thank you teacher! I think Taiwan's garbage culture is great, and I wish we had the same system in America. Most Americans don't know their neighbors!
The funniest thing about the garbage truck is that that exact same type of music is what ice cream trucks play in my country. All of the disappointed
Observation: people in Taiwan seem more willing to stand in line for a long time for things! I have difficulty reconciling how given how busy people are and the average incomes people have, people can afford the time and money to do many things in Taiwan. 1:18 I think the receipt lottery idea is a great idea and would help countries keep businesses more honest about reporting revenue for taxes. 3:07 7-eleven definitely provides many more services in Taiwan! I wish the ones in the US had more financial and mail services. 4:37 Have more people in Taiwan been carrying around larger insulated water containers such as Yeti and Stanley-branded tumblers? Would be great to always have ice cold beverages on the go, and avoid the health issues and cost! of buying so much milk tea 5:30 I never noticed this! Do people do the opposite and put a 不乖 where they don't like someone? 6:19 Definitely more convenient to not have to bring garbage to the garbage truck! Unless things have changed, don't people need to buy special garbage bags too? More convenient to have garbage trucks pick things up at your house or building, though I could see how people bringing out garbage could save the town money, decrease outdoor pests that eat trash, and motivate people to generate less garbage.
Hi Grace - could you confirm that at 3:49, where you put "Chinese Mandarin", this is the more common usage in China? For example, "photocopy" is commonly said as fu4 yin4 in China and ying3 yin4 in Taiwan, is that correct?
Many Americans homeowners get charged a monthly trash fee based on how big their trash cans are. I’m not sure how the trash companies could track and appropriately charge fees if the homeowners all come at once to throw away trash.
This video was awesome listening practice! When I lived in Beijing, the garbage trucks in my neighborhood played Christmas music all year long😅 I made a few videos about my experience with culture shock in China (ruclips.net/video/9Mue1JWMPUc/видео.html) mostly, my experiences in Beijing, but then some things I noticed also while traveling around China. Unfortunately, I have yet to visit Taiwan, but when I do go, I will buy some guai-guai 😋

@@GraceMandarinChinese LOL,

The funniest thing about the garbage truck is that that exact same type of music is what ice cream trucks play in my country. All of the disappointed

Yes! That’s correct! ☺️
Many Americans homeowners get charged a monthly trash fee based on how big their trash cans are. I’m not sure how the trash companies could track and appropriately charge fees if the homeowners all come at once to throw away trash.
