  • We LOVE the Binson Echorec-style drum echo. And T-Rex has brought it back to life!
Welcome to the show! Let’s just say it: this is THE most anticipated effects device of the last few years… according to me and Dan anyway. No super computers nor mega processors here; no easy portability nor Swiss-Army-knife functionality. Nope, it’s reborn old tech, it does one thing, it’s noisy, cumbersome and of course, comes with a reassuringly, erm, confident price tag. People of tone, welcome the all-new Binson Echorec, a genuine multi-head magnetic drum echo made by the laudable people at T-Rex in Denmark.
If you want to know more about Echorecs, watch this: • That Pedal Show - Real...
And indeed this: • Strymon Volante, Vinta...
Today we’re firing it up for the first time at TPS alongside a handful of the other leading drum echo simulators from Strymon, Dawner Prince, Catalinbread and Boss. And of course a genuine old one.
Are we left spinning or does it get drummed out of the studio? Before this copy gets any worse… please enjoy the show!
Mick’s note on the Boonar phase issue…
No doubt there will be lots of comments telling me I’m wrong, so I tested this thoroughly after filming. I set up two amps, got them in phase with no effects, and used TheGigRig G3 for true, true bypass! All my other effects play in phase in this rig.
Here are my results from this particular Boonar, serial number 355-16.
'OUT' means phase flipped in relation to the original signal. 'IN' means the phase stays the same.
    Trails bypass, pedal off: OUT
    Trails bypass, pedal on: OUT
    True bypass, pedal off: IN
    True bypass, pedal on: OUT
As you can see, no matter what the bypass mode, in this particular Boonar the effected signal is always flipped phase.
To double check, I did the same test with the Catalinbread Echorec, and for all states (buffered bypass, true bypass, effect on and off) the phase result was IN. Hope that explains it clearly!

I bought an original T7E Binson earlier this year. Howard 'the legend' at MAC in Leeds who services David Gilmour, Pete Townsend etc Binson's did the works on it. Totally amazing. I've used a Catlinbread Echorec on my board for years now which has been great...BUT its not the same, the original is magical. The problem is...hours go lost in a psychedelic trip when its on

Great demos. The echorec emulation sounds very faithful there. It’s interesting how influential the original Binson unit was in the history of electronic music too. I understand Delia Derbyshire used an Echorec at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the 60s, and there are notes in her archive which show she also used it at what was billed as the first-ever concert of electronic music at the Watermill theatre in 1966.

Great video guys! Very informative and eye opening, I learned so much in this episode. It was quite entertaining to see Dan have a pedal dedicated to the "Pink Floyd" sound and use rather controlled constraint in most cases no to just rip off some Gilmour licks without Mick running him through because of the copyright police getting them. He snuck a few in there, but had opportunity for so many more. Well Done all the way around TPS! 🥰🥰

Catalinbred has been a great tool for making a front end vintage-y slapback verb as well as for making a stacking delay with my now old school tc-nova delays at the end of the chain/in the loop. The internal pot is useful for giving a nice pre-amp ‘crispiness’ and can be dialed up to deliver a very musical fuzz. That tone control is the cats pajamas with the sweep cutting the lows for a great slapback that doesn’t add mud, or for a warm ambiance when turned left. It’s great to see these pedals altogether here-thanks gentlemen!

Been waiting for you gentlemen to get your paws on this thing. The show you did with the PE603T was just epic. Hard to believe that was 6 years ago. As I commented on the videos T-Rex did of the launch of their Binson it is gratifying to know that in this century we can still make stuff as good as back in the 20th. The boonar, volante et al are good but they lack the magic of the real magnetics. Such a special sound. Practicality be damned.

The Boonar repeats can be darkened by one of the rear mounted trim ports, also there is an internal DIP switch for impedance (47K original or 1M modern) and it's factory set to the 1M for a bit more sparkle and volume.

Damn that TRex is fucking nice. Sounds and looks amazing. The Boonar however seems to be able to really GRAB that sound like no other to my ears. Like those 2 weensy knobs on the sides for example.... one is the Preamp input gain so you can really dirty it up if you need... but then the magical secret yummy JUICE on the other side... The aging of the drum. The knob... the little knob... changes the "age" of the drum.
And if you run it with the dipswitches in the vintage mode you could probably get that level boost.. but with a little more control... id have to double check that bit.. . but I like that you can set it so there isn't. The Boonar... To me... is the best Echorec pedal. I would have to be in the same room to compare it to the TRex.

I LOVE echorec pedals and have tried almost all including Boonar, Catalinbread E-Rec, Volante etc. My favorites are the Gurus Echosex2T7E and the Foxgear Echosex Baby and T7EBaby.
The Gurus T7E is my overall fave and the Foxgear T7E has the coolest band-passed filtering as an alternative. The swell on each is hypnotic. The Gurus and Foxgear can get much warmer and darker than the others. The others are terrific but Gurus & Foxgear sound less digital and sparkly and pristine and Gurus gives the warm tone you’d expect from a tube preamp and the foxgear sounds more like an analog delay, maybe a carbon copy.
I’ve watched every Binson Echorec TPS and have enjoyed them and learned lots from each episode. Great content!

I remember most fondly those episodes in which Dan has been taken away with the sound of an atmospheric delay. This has been no exception, thanks team.
Perhaps a little Xmas special could be thrown together of the best bits of an hour of delay-based noodling? Dan, those amps, a couple of delays and pick the bones out of 60 mins worth?
    Hope springs eternal!

Cool this episode coming out just after I got back from visiting my old bandmates, during which the drummer and bassist had been trying to jam Interstellar Overdrive.
We went on a few 20+ minute excursions to another realm, over the three weeks I was there. 😆
Always loved the Echorec, but it really does get me playing a certain way, because of how it works, unless I just use it as a more reverb sounding effect, as Gilmour did on Echoes.

Nice to see the new TRex Echirec but I think it should be compared with the classic ones
Similar prices and are supposed to be THE Echorecs, so better than any emulation pedal
Costing 2k, its target customer is probably considering getting a classic echorec already
Volante costs 1/5, has a smaller footprint, is stereo, offers a dozen of extra functionalities
I'd recomend either VOL or the Boonar for most people that want an echorec soundalike
The others are great too but miss the iconic individual repeat head activation experience
Other echo pedals can emulate that sound, that Boss is a great example. Multi-purposes
Keep it up! These videos are pure gold and guys are all amazing (including the public) 🤟

I have to say I feel like Volante is still king. And I'm trying to be unbiased best I can, since I own it. I'm always on the lookout for tape, drum and their emulators. And Volante still feels like the most complete package. Not only it's incredibly feature rich, sounds incredible, it just feels like a love letter to that particular sound.

As much as I love preamp color (you might get from an Echorec) I thought the cleanliness of the Volante really shined here. And nothing else gives you the same panning control and stereo possibilities. (Still liked the T-Rex as well.)

Wow that is an incredible unit. Hats off to T-Rex! I’ve had a Boonar and a Catalinbread but I currently have the Volante for the stereo goodness on my board. It is the only Strymon pedal where I wish it didn’t have as much of the Strymon sound. Would love it to be a little more raw at times, but for a my midi board, it does everything I need.

    • @LoKi6922
      @LoKi6922 7 месяцев назад +2

Not cold. It’s hard to put into words but Strymon pedals have a polished sound to them. People love it or hate it. I generally like it but I think a spinning disc delay should be a little less polished.

  • @michaelthimes
    @michaelthimes 7 месяцев назад +2

The T-rex sounds exquisite definitely want to hear the balanced I/O. Also - fingers crossed that Strymon release a plugin of the volante. While I sold the pedal because I’ve moved to plugins for all time based effects - I do miss the tone of the strymon. But the tone of the T-rex is next level. Frankly, I don’t see a need for a vintage unit. This, an echo fix and a FT TTE would be three ace pieces for a studio.

Gentlemen! Just returned from Miami Beach to hear this brilliant episode! (Dan, the food was sensational!) I just went back and watched Tom Bukovac, John McBride, Ebo go through a bunch of vintage delays over at Inside Blackbird. One was a vintage Binson. Without other prompting, John raised the point about noise. He switched the Binson channel off and on a few times to demonstrate (and even seemingly reached to the console subconsciously and turned it off while they were talking). John's enthusiastic comment about the Binson and noise was that it was worth it. They agreed that in the mix, it isn't what you notice. Now, naturally, and to Mick's point, a studio environment is different to live gigs. There are so many things you can do during mixing to control that noise. Again, it was an original Binson from Milan, with masking tape labels in English over the original Italian controls labels. Cheers, guys.

When you guys have done real tape vs, I've always felt the magic of the real one being bounds above the modern digital recreations even from the 3000 yard view of youtube viewer. I'm not really feeling that magic difference here. The Boonar especially was holding it's own on the T-Rex, so much so I think I preferred the digital one. Well done DSP drum delay makers.

This is one of the better comparisons in a real world , i have the Binson echotec valve version and the boonar , the binson stays at home , the boonar on my board , both sounding great in the context of a band , most of the great sounding gear like the eventide H90 are hardly usable in a live setting , the boonar does and easy to adjust in the mix, i was very interested in the Trex but it still lacking the warmth and vibe of the old Binson, my two cents anyway

On the Strymon "sheen", run an OD into the Volante, then through an amp EQ/tube reverb, then sit all of that in a live mix with cymbal wash and buzzing SVT style ODs from a bass player, and its PERFECT. In iso, it might be too pretty, in the heat of battle (with no in ears) it's just right.

Of all the amazing stuff that I aspire to or have acquired, the Echorec is one piece of which I am truly unworthy. Ironically it was Hank Marvin who inspired mini-me to be a guitar player, but it is fairly apparent that music is not my strong suit. T Rex are pretty heroic for giving these to the World and they actually make the Echo that I aspire to- next summer I believe that I will score a pair of Replicators to complete the Analog Echo section of the rig, God willing and the creek don't rise. 🎸
