Ultimate Analog Delay Shootout! Space Echo VS Echoplex VS Echorec VS Plugins VS Pedals!

  • I mean, someone had to do it right? The three most iconic vintage analog delay units of all time VS the three plugins VS the three corresponding guitar pedals. The ultimate shootout! Video also features how to properly interface them in a studio environment (or on stage). For consistency sake, all tracks were pre-recorded, using the same guitar, vocal and drum stems, to exclude unnecessary variables, allowing you to focus solely on the delay tones themselves. I thought hard about splitting this video into three parts but decided you NEED the timestamps of all 27 WAV audio files at your fingertips to decide which sounds best to you. Which are your favorite? Remember, "unique is better than perfect" and there really is no "best" here among these devices. Please select 4K resolution for the best experience.
    Use the timestamps to hop around or watch it in full. Check out the next Binson EM6 Video (a pseudo part II of this video) here at JML Recording too. Thanks for your support!

    I think the OG Roland Tape Units (the 201 & 301 especially) remain King. 👑
    They lend a beautiful colour and character to guitar, vocals, drums - anything & everything.
    The Echorec has a particular rhythmic vibe, but it’s more of a one-trick effect … you couldn’t use it on everything, like you could the RE units.
    The EP-3 is TOO clean, to my ears … no strong character or vibe (the delay). People seem to like the preamp; I prefer the way the drums hit through the RE unit, personally - and I assume that is down to the Roland RE preamp (also much revered) … ? 🤷🏻‍♂️
    In general, the plug-ins did a significantly better job of emulating the overall tone/delay vibes of the original units, I thought … and the pedals seemed to do a better job of emulating the ‘effect stunts’ of the respective unit, ie self-oscillation and shifting the spindle on the EP (again, generally speaking).
    The og RE-201 and RE-301 remain King, for mine. Radiohead and Brian Setzer (and many other artists) ain’t no fools!

    Very nicely done! I have some Binson Echorec examples on my channel that include some NOS remade units. Nothing matches a good working Binson in my opinion.

    Wow what a great video! Superior quality review of these devices and plugins. Thank you Thank you!! I have been looking into getting a vintage tape delay for a while now and you have provided amazing examples of what I can expect. There is nothing like this on the YT💪 please keep the vids coming✌ P.S. this vid is brimming with so much info I'll be watching it quite a few times😉

    20:22. The internal modulation pot maybe the component that lends this little unit more credence…as well as increasing the internal preamp pot.

    So many flavors to have in one studio. It’s cool to see how well the pedals and plugins hold up. I can see them all coming in handy for different appliances.

      I agree. My takeaway wasn't "oh this sucks and that rocks," but more that each one would be useful in different scenarios. I was however quite enamored by the EP-3's preamp.

    A lot of big name artists have used Binson Echorecs. They were expensive af back in the day (still are). Vangelis used them too in the 70s/80s. I think people liked 'em back then because they were cleaner sounding than tape echo, and were probably a bit of a status symbol too.

      @JMLRecording  8 месяцев назад +1

      For sure. I revisited all of my analog delays this week actually and the ep-3 won again. My echorec is super special to me but it is not versatile, and to me, it is a one trick pony (sound wise). It has its vibe and you cannot subtract from or add to it. I’ve owned 5 in my life and they all pretty much sounded the same once serviced. Very unique. A space echo sounds warm and silky like the Evans and the echoplex is punchy and quite clean but the Echorec is kinda tunneled and extremely colored. Vibey for sure but not clean like the others. This is partly due to the tube path and partly the oiled drum. Reamping into it and coming back DI cleans it up a bit imo. Either way, it’s a unique flavor that proved the hardest for the pedal format to clone in this shootout.
      Thanks for the input!

    Good comparison. Maybe try the Re-202, it has more features and sounds in it than the Re-2 that is closer to the Re-201 and Ive read that the Bell Epoche Deluxe is the better EP3 pedal.

    That fuzzy distortion that pops up a lot is due to using an active DI... should really be passive for these vintage delays.

    • @JMLRecording
      @JMLRecording  5 дней назад

      Yes, you are correct. The rule of thumb is to use a passive DI on active instruments and active DI on passive stuff. I believe that’s what I did here. Since the all these delay devices are powered, it should be a passive DI. Though there’s always an exception and the ear should have the final say 👍

    I'm not sure it was exactly fair to test the Echoplex delay pedal without its preamp partner...

    • @JMLRecording
      @JMLRecording  4 месяца назад

      A fair point indeed. I should have used the ep boost or ep101 before it. In hindsight, if I reshot the video I would have. When this was shot I thought that pedal had the preamp in it. I didn’t know that was a separate pedal altogether. Thanks for the great comment though!!
