    As a biologist with a lab research background, this is fascinating and I don't see it as a failure whatsoever. You managed to capture mycelium inside the box. I'd mix up, rehydrate it with a spray bottle of distilled water and place it somewhere in dark moderate temperature to develop further. Not all colonies bloom fiercely. However, mold loves to spread and there's more than enough there to get something started. Thanks for sharing this process done in a traditional way.

      I've been implementing this technique in redford michigan for years and I'm finally seeing result. The soil was destroyed in my area.. The salt every winter doesn't help at all. Huge obstacles to overcome.

    Wonderful video chris. This is probably the most difficult product to get consistantly. Thats how nature works.
    Want to add something here.
    While you have demonstrated how to find natural leaf mold in the forest and collect it in the rice, many viewers would be wondering what to do if they have no access to forest leaf mold nearby. Our teacher taught us an alternative.
    1. Drench the soil to be used for collecting IMO using LAB or rice wash water (this should be preferably under the shade of a tree)
    2. Dig it a little (one or two inches)
    3. Place the collection box in the shallow depression with cooked rice loosely spread out (You have shown this clearly in the video)
    4. Cover the box with straw, leaves and other organic matter and wait for a few days till the fungal mycelia form.
    Its always worked!!!

    • @DrVivek-ub6bf
      @DrVivek-ub6bf 4 года назад +9

      @@annsiguenza9108 Its easy. Make LAB solution. Soak dry leaves in following for 24 hours.
      LAB:salt:brown sugar: water
      5:1:3:1000
      Keep it in shade, lid covered
      In 24 hours you will see lots of bubbling
      Longer soak is also OK upto 48 hours, or just wait till the bubbling dies down
      Remove the soaked leaves and keep in shady place covered with a sack to prevent moisture from evaporating, or just a plastic drum and cover the lid
      Within five days the leaves turn black and full of mold. You can use this mold to extract IMO-1. It works great
      This is the quickest way of making leaf mold.

I think I'm going to dig down just into the loamy level, place the burlap bag on a layer of sticks to let air underneath it, and replace the leaves and forest litter back on top of it.

I also made one from a box I placed Among a reed thicket in a wet land area with the idea that diversity is key. So many ways to use this technology and I love the idea of food full of life. @@bluejay3945 it will be anaerobic. The difference if the good bacteria will over take the bad if done correctly. The best way to tell is by the smell. If it smells putrid, not good. If it smells sweetish and not terrible good. When your making the seed stock, the stuff in the rice or whatever substrate tou are using the prepopulated bacteria is what your after, which is already going to be a beneficial balance evidenced by the health of the old growth or whatever surrounding it. It's not too difficult to tell. I have had some batches go bad but it's super obvious when it does. It usually has a very bad smell.

    But won't the cooking process kill all the micro-organisms in the FPJ and the OHN that was added to the rice(4.15) BEFORE cooking it? Generally high heat is used for disinfection by killing bacteria, viruses fungi etc.
    Can somebody shed some light on this. Thanks.

    I'm looking for a video to give a practical explanation of what exactly it is you're doing and why. You use a lot of references like LAB, IMO or FPJ...i have no idea what these are. Getting soil fungi and putting it in your garden seems about as straightforward as digging up some fungi in the forest and mixing it in with your garden soil...where do I start trying to understand what you're doing here and why? How is it different than digging up fungi and transplanting it? I watched your 'Korean Natural Farming in a nut shell' video but it still didn't answer those fundamental questions. Thanks

    I am an agronomic soil scientist. A word of caution about aqueous vegetative extracts "compost tea". First: the finish extract contains very little, if any, nutrient value in lab analysis. When compared to groups receiving an equal amount of water on the same schedule the two groups are indistinguishable. Secondly: these malto-lactic fermented solutions can be dangerous. E. coli, salmonella and even cholera have been incubated this way with deadly consequences in Korea and Taiwan.

    hey man. I just took my IMO1 from the bamboo forest. my IMO was greenish white. not sure if it was because I used white corn (cooked) instead of rice. I left another container but using rice instead.

    1st three batches all had lots of red/pink dots? Even the JMS formed the red dots on the potato, different woods. It doesn't smell bad. All had pale grey hypha, 2 had dark grey spots. Guess a microscope is needed.

    Chris ... my wife and I are so excited to start KNF ... we are going to try to do it as container gardening. We are a bit overwhelmed with all the processes and have watched all your videos... is there an order that we apply FPJ, IMO, LAB, etc. How can we apply this awesome way of gardening from scratch and in containers ... we have tried to find more info, but you seem to be most thorough on the subject ... are there any books on the subject, we haven't anything... thank you for all you are doing.

    So for a standard rice cooker , the rice to water ratio is 1:1.5 (1c rice to 1 1/2 c water) so for this one I would probably use 1c rice to 3/4c water 👍

    Just make an open top lid for the box that pinches the paper in between the two so you're not wasting energy stapling things.

    finally took my first collection. It wasnt perfect because i didnt put security around my collection pot, so the squirrels knocked it over i beieve. still had 24g of usable material. already mixed it one to one with brown sugar.
    can i now take that and put it in a tea, or do i have to make I.M.O. 3 first?

  • @HalfReaper

    If you get a perfect collection couldn't you just continuously feed it (preserve like a 1/4 of it) and use it to produce more perfect collections which will in turn save you the travel time and also increase the odds of a perfect collection?

    • @gingerbug7425
      @gingerbug7425 4 года назад

      Eventually your culture would domesticate. Seperate perfect collections would provide a better diversity. If you want to grow out your collection to apply it to a bigger area, just advance through the IMO2-IMO4 process or LIMO
