    Bit of a difference from my old 58 pattern webbing in 1984 and SLR. ..or SMG..LMG..GPMG.. never used the L96 sniper rifle. But I loved the 9mm Browning. But am so old I remember firing the SMLE 303 as an army cadet in the start of the 80s just thinking I went from the 303 to 7.62 to 5.56. but the best British army rifle I ever shot and only one shot. The Brown Bess musket.

    I was on the formation parade of the Royal Irish Regiment ,discharged in 02
    Man the kit has changed in such a short time even the the rank has changed I used to be a private not ranger, but really good to see the new kit I had the mk 6 helmet when in prone it was a menace , my med kit was in a respirator pouch (Team Medic) in the 80's we used to buy kit from boots to jackets we used to say any idiot can be uncomfortable we were very comfy. We even bought our own off duty Ppw's some guys carried a uzi me glock 19 but loved my browning 9 mill. Yeah kit and equipment has come a long way and no sign of slowing down. We are receiving some high tech kit this year to start training with, to help us when deployed. Funny to hear that lads were even buying Gucci kit back in the 80s. Yeah “Ranger” has been adopted well with everyone here. That’s what makes our Regiment so good is all the history it has from our past Regiments. Looking at doing a few videos at a later stage on the history of previous units who made what we are today. One on each, to spread the word to generations who might not know. UDR, Irish Rangers, Royal Ulster Rifles, Royal Irish Fusiliers, the 87th and 27th to name a few all really interesting stuff. Looking at one a month on here focusing on History once I get some routine back.

      they showed up in combat trousers and T shirt and trainers we the usual weight weapon helmet and they asked us were we Irish Army Ranger Wing we then asked Dose Royal Irish not give it away . Do officers ever get to use the Sharpshooter rifle or the GPMG? Also are officers able to go for external specialty training such as Sniper qualification? Cheers in advance.

    • @Rangermedia
      @Rangermedia  5 лет назад +5

      James Adams so if you go Infantry officer you will get to use both weapon systems in technically your phase 2 in Brecon. Platoon commanders battle course. Everyone in your platoon so students on the course will fill all the roles in the platoon ie sharpshooter and machine gunner as well as other roles like section commander, platoon Sargent and your actual role platoon commander. Once you’ve passed the course and you head to your Regiment then Your in your role as platoon commander. Don’t get me wrong you could fire them on range days with your platoon but you just wouldn’t be in these roles on exercise or operations. Usually the sniper course is just a route for others ranks so not direct entry officers. The platoon commander for an infantry sniper platoon is a Clsgt. You can go down the route of patrols platoon commander as a direct entry officer, this post is captain and once you’ve had experience in your Regiment. Extremely important job so there’s usually competition for that role.

    • @Rangermedia
