I've made these using yarn, raffia, and jute. They are very sturdy. Also, made baskets using oak splits. I like the way he uses as many natural, traditional materials as possible.
@@GO_NATIVE_FARMS I grew up 45 minutes from the Eastern Cherokee Rez. Our required art course to graduate included Cherokee finger braiding, corn husk braided mats, and rug weaving. Our teacher wouldn’t let us go into town and buy wooden dowels; we had to go out in the woods and find the right size diameter and length sticks for the size rug we wanted to make, and she taught us how to lash the corners and set it up. I didn’t have to take the basket weaving to graduate, so I didn’t, and kicked myself for decades. Then the Oklahoma Cherokee Nation brought some folks out to the Seattle At-Large community annual picnic one year and I finally learned the basics! I’ve got the reeds and a big home supply store 5 gallon bucket for the water. I just need to set aside a couple hours to get started on either one (but this time with dowels because I don’t have time to go find sticks and sand them down with my teaching schedule this fall).
@@GO_NATIVE_FARMS I am very blessed in how my mom’s tribal Nation makes sure we are all connected on at least a monthly basis. My dad is Muscogee and Seminole, and they don’t really have any outreach to At-large community members.
