His stay fit part is one of my favorite video parts I always loved the vibe but like he was saying it’s subjective. Vans the man and this has been a great listen once again
I grew up doing bmx when van Homan was on top of the sport and I still do it a little and was just thinking about what happened to Homan, and this pops up, he was always known for being kinda Jacked I'm like I bet he still is hahaha
Thank you. 🙌🙌 There’s a lot of gripes about interrupting and talking over one another, which I understand, but I really prefer the casual, friendly bullshitting conversation feel that a lot of these take on. You can tell when dennis and I are geeked out with the guest.
@@OurBMX sometimes friends interrupt each other. It happens. Can try to be as structured as possible but sometimes the best spots are found going somewhere unplanned. 🤙
I love this podcast but you have to do better about not talking over your guests. They're usually legends and we really want to hear more of what they have to say.
I rode with van woman once in cincy and he took a picture or me doing a lookback in the ghetto and said hell yeah!!! nicest dude, best day of riding in my life. even got a group photo with his arm around me. fucking weird.
So unassuming for a guy who has done some of the most unbelievable things ever on a bike and continues to make sure BMX is represented well in the Olympics.
Miss ya bud! Haven’t seen you in ages. Glad I got to live Some of your legendary sections in person thank you for always being cool and convincing me that eating turkey sandwiches would allow me to manual handrails easier LOL I actually started eating the same meal as you thinking it would help my riding before getting on the Wawa pickle and cheese vegetarian diet.
somewhat missed opportinity to really dive into the life and history of a mt rushmore of BMX caliber person. you spent half the time talking about japan, olympics, talking over one another. no hate just really disappointed of the lost opportunity. would love to hear more about the behind the scenes of coming up, sponsorships, breaking down his biggest clips. it sometimes got there but nowhere close. pull up some clips, talk about them. not to compare to the 9, but they utilize a format that really lets the guest speak and the hosts around open it up. it's just kind of scattered. van will forever be the goat edit- just want to add, breaking down the kona gap and disceting it was absolutely hilarious and classic. i was left wanting more of that. way more. would LOVE a second go around that's all. just input and constructive criticism, no hate at all. love what you guys are doing. would love to see more old heads like byrnes, derek, nyquest, and maybe like dave parick, taj, ROBO. can't believe how niche this area is, it seems, but it's gold at the same time
No worries. Honestly, I agree. We treated it a bit more casual (alcohol didn't help) than we should have and Van definitely deserves a round two with an origin story/serious podcast.
LOVED THIS INTERVIEW first off. but I got MAD beef with what van said at 1:28:00ish: passion for BMX will not get you a job in BMX, networking will! this industry does NOT work like regular jobs. If someone's never seen your face or knows someone that has, they won't give your application a second look, believe that. You gotta get out there to events and meet people, post shit online all the time, DM folks asking questions, comment on posts giving compliments etc. NETWORKING!!!!
Legend!! Good to hear he's still doing awesome. Love the idea about refilming old parts as an ode to the part, but easier probably to pick a rider and then reproduce all the bangers rather than the whole part - Van's Criminal Mischief banger, Stay Fit banger and Holy Fit banger along with some other memorable clips from the vid could be cool to see.
32:30 It is not an accessible realm of BMX. I'd rather jump the Mega Ramp just once... But in fairness the Olympics should be something someone actively strives for. People build their own gymnastics facilities or pay great amounts for their kids to go to certain places to train. This will likely be similar over time.
I had The Fit series one, Then The Fit series 2 Van Homan,S&M pitchforks WTP bars, Fit Stem 2, kink sprocket, Odyssey Hazard lites and 2 profile hubs, profile cranks of course it was some of the first euro bottom bracket. I loved that bike.
Hmm idk, theres this secretive part of bmx and hell if people find a sick spot sometimes they want to keep it personal but go find your own gems bro it's fun to explore
32:10 Ryan, you always make this argument, and it's always very flawed... Just because San Diego doesn't have a Fise styled course doesn't mean it doesn't belong in the Olympics/doesn't represent BMX. You should instead ask why AREN'T there more courses like this available to ride? But also, so many others places in the world DO have training grounds like that. And if someone wants to be in the Olympics enough, they'll move or go wherever it takes. It's not for the average rider. It's for the top athletes to compete and prove their ability. No hate directed towards you. Just need to stop making this comparison.
I disagree. Look at skateboarding in the Olympics; it represents something attainable and available to every kid in the country/world. In comparison, BMX looks like a WWF event when they’re riding a course that literally does not exist in the entire country. I hope that changes, but there’s no denying that the cart is before the horse.
@OurBMX I still think if someone wants it bad enough, they'll find a way. Live in San Diego? As you said, Clairemont is an option. Woodward West is 4 hours away. No money? You can work there and get sessions for free during camp season. Phoenix is 5 hours away and just opened up an indoor park with a box jump and quarter resi. Options like these aren't convenient if you wanna stay in somewhere like San Diego, but we're talking Olympics here. Big sacrifices are to be made if you wanna be one of the top riders in the world. I believe you can apply this mindset of traveling to progress anywhere in the USA.
Those are definitely good examples/arguments and I don’t really disagree. Buuut, I’m not saying that the path is impossible. Just that the gap is wider than it should be and what’s seen in the Olympics doesn’t represent a majority of real-life BMX riding that happens in the world. Years leading in, there was a battle behind the scenes between FISE-style courses and cement X Games/Vans Pro Cup-style. As far as I was told, the UCI decided to work with FISE because they were the most organized and funded, etc…which makes sense. I, personally, feel it should have been cement parks as that is what’s most common across the world. It’s fine if you disagree and I appreciate the comment, but I’ll probably keep using the example if the topic comes up again. 🙌🙌
We haven’t done any promo, but there’s stuff in there the new shop. I think we need to update it on here. 🤦♂️ I appreciate the support! shop.ourbmx.com
Fudger seems like he’d be a fun dude to drink beers with after a day of riding bikes , I think he was referring to with the 6 grand contract with osato and the primate if I remember it right, I might be wrong, you guys should get Dave Osato on the show
the Primate was Osato's signature frame for Wethepeople, not Schwinn. If I had to guess I'd say Jay Miron or Brian Foster probably made the most money on that Schwinn team. Maybe Joey Garica too because he did very well in contests.
@@2Swift4u I feel like I remember someone said it might have been moeller say that osato was making 6 grand a month at we the people back in the day , when they where talking about how pros don’t make much compared to the early 2000s
33:52 - I totally disagree. All the other sports, or at least 99% of them, are practiced in the very same 'terrain' on every Olympic game (track & field, football, volleyball, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, whatever!), and they still attract a lot of attention. The reason some (or most) of them are boring is because they have reached their limit and there's no room for creativity, whereas in sports like BMX, skateboarding or surfing there are NO limits! The ramp may be the same but the riders have an amazing freedom to do whatever they like, and so make it not boring. Having to 'adapt' to a new environment is a street mentality, and of all the BMX disciplines, street is the least fun to watch nowadays, because no matter what the setup is, everybody just end up doing the same tricks, just different combos, and even these are already alike. Today's street is barspins, manuals (rear and front), tailwhips, grinds, 180s and 360s (or 540s, whatever). Learn these tricks and you're a street master. Yawn.
Yeah all the weed smoking beer drinking couch Surfers get old BMX is turning into something real in Japanese culture is more focused on decency and the sport itself it's a whole nother world and I really friendly and amazing one we're in the Olympics now it's about to get real
I'm kinda bummed you didn't start from the birth of Van. Great content, but I do feel it wasn't as well prepared as others have been. Nothing but love, I'm not trying to be a downer just want this to be all it can be.
I’ve thought about a tribute video part before that would be sick. Or like call it “tributes” and only get clips that were from or in other peoples video parts. Haha 😂
Man this could have been way better. Dennis just talking the whole time and then y’all just watch road foools. Wasted what could have been great story time.
Thank you for this. Also thank you Van for everything you continue to do for BMX

That was awesome. Van has always been my bmx hero!
What a humble dude, a total legend. Im asking for a part 2 one of these days! There is so much more of course. Thanks guys
Dennis is probably the only person the could recreate a Van Homan part on his own
Facts dude is a monster and so chill about it
Dennies talking to Homan as a IDOL/Legend in the flesh is AWSOME!
I grew up doing bmx when van Homan was on top of the sport and I still do it a little and was just thinking about what happened to Homan, and this pops up, he was always known for being kinda Jacked I'm like I bet he still is hahaha

Gives it some tension when that happens. This is probably a good audience for it.
I love this podcast but you have to do better about not talking over your guests. They're usually legends and we really want to hear more of what they have to say.
Dennis legit interrupts guests all the time
Modelo's didn't help.
Bring Demarcus back! Asks a question, sits back and let's the guest talk.
Honestly they were disrespectful towards him.
+++ Great podcast. Respect the legend! Let the man speak!
Can't wait to listen to this one. I appreciate this podcast and all of your amazing guests.

Sounds dope, yeah, euro BB's we're practically unheard of then. I think Ruben was the first person I'd ever seen use them and get them some exposure.
