The muted colors are a stylistic choice, not a printing limitation. Plenty of books (both for kids and adults) in the era were full of bright colors. We were coming off the peak of 60s hippy psychedelic artwork after all. The muted colors and very grounded realistic look might even be a response to that style, but that's pure just speculation. It certainly made the books stand out in the crowd back when I was a kid.

I find it extremely funny when straight people try to argue that a gay creator’s stories and characters don’t have gay in them, because like??? Of course they do, being gay isn’t just a flag on someone’s wall, it’s part of their every day life as much as being straight is part of a straight person’s life. If it’s written from a gay lense of course it’ll be gay in some way! As a gay creator myself I can’t fathom this type of argument. All my creations has some gay in it even if there are no romantic aspects and in ways that maybe only other gay people will pick up on solely because we view life in similar ways. Straight people can’t see it so itäs not there?? Okay maybe you can’t see it because you life life in a fundamentally different way? Anyway, awesome video! Glad more people are talking about the gay frogs!

It's a lot more deep and wholesome than I remembered, and I really appreciate Arnold Lobel for his work in developing a beneficial kid's book series, while expressing himself at the same time. mm okay I have an idea, if frog and toad was written by a gay guy it’s possible it was popular in the lgbtq community at the time, Vermont was the first state to legalize same sex unions and that lead to lots of gay people coming here, my parents included and I read this book as a kid, this would’ve been the late 90s early 2000s, just a wild coincidence for me that this book was popular in Vermont

The point of the swimsuit story, in my opinion, is to help children develop the ability to be comfortable in their own skin and the way they look. It helps teach self-confidence.
The story illustrates that if you are outwardly expressive about your insecurities, you bring more attention to them. People (other children) are more likely to hone in on your insecurities if you make a big deal out of them in the first place. So why not be confident? (As is displayed in Toad's 'walking back home' illustration)
As we grow older, we can develop more nuanced thinking in regard to self-confidence and freedom of choice that is sometimes accompanied by subjective silliness in the eyes of others. This includes the inherent foundation of embarrassment in this way being a social construct. But those are very complex things to grasp.
The story Lobel wrote provides a solid guideline into grappling with those feelings in the social context that children exist within. The way we handle those feelings typically evolves as we become adults. But I think the story is a perfect introduction to handling them for the intended demographic - kids :)
