  • What Makes the Honda Fit So GREAT?: The 2012 Honda Fit is the Car You Didn't Know You Needed
By Carter Gillespie and Aaron Gaghagen
Sometimes great Hondas can sneak past people because they aren't the fastest or fanciest. Luckily for us we picked up a 2012 Honda Fit and Carter stole it for a couple weeks. During this time Carter's eyes were opened to the wonder that is the Fit. He's used to his fancy Acura RL or TLX or his track cars, so a stock Fit is way different than what he is used to. How did he arrive at the conclusion that everyone should own a 2012?

I bought my pre-owned 2012 Fit Sport back in January 2015. It has 37k miles on it and now has about 89k. It's still going strong! I only have had to replace the battery ONCE (whatever battery they installed before I bought it was incredible, even leaving the dome light on overnight several times throughout the years); have changed the oil myself several times, as well as the transmission oil a couple times; drained the brake fluid; and simply filled up the coolant a few times and it's still going strong. Really good investment. Honda just makes such good vehicles. The only con, I guess, is that you can feel the road fairly well, but it's not a big deal, there's enough suspension and you get used to that kind of thing.

I'm not sure what the underlying issue is, but with a sample size of 2 (one east coast US, one west coast), both 2nd gen fits I've dealt with prematurely wore down their driver's side brake pads. Passenger side was at maybe 3/4 life. That, and tall people can't see the speedometer are my only complaints with the car.

I'm able to pack 8 x wheels+tires, 2 totes of spare fluids+parts, 1 tote of camping equipment, a jack, and a 5 drawer tool chest in the rear while still having the whole front seat available. These things are soooooo good as track cars because you can bring so much with you, especially if it's a 2-3 day event at an event that is hours away from home. 27 track days and 80k miles of ownership (244k total) and I've never needed a tow from an event.

The 2nd gen sport model has great sporty suspensions for handling, you can definitely do 20-25km/h over speed limits on windy mountain roads (you can keep up with sports cars easily), on steeper hills going 100km/h might be the max I would do (hearing 4000+ rpm feels like I'm killing the engine). But I've got no problem doing 110-120km/h on freeways, and 140km/h for passing. For max fuel efficiency, I felt like 90-100km/h is great which is just the speed limit here in Canada on most highways (and around 60km/h in cities).

I'm going to sound like a dork for saying this but its whatev...
I'm actively collecting all 3 versions of Hondas equipped with SOHC VTEC L15 engines in the US market. I already have 3 GD3s (2 were too cheap to pass up) and a 2016 CR-Z to mark off the L15A and LEA cars... Just need a GE8 to finish out the collection with its L15A7.
The GE8 on paper is the most utilitarian out of the 3 gens of Fits stateside and would be the most ideal daily. Plenty of storage with 10 cup holders, 2 glove boxes (the upper one can be heated/cooled if you import the vent duct), and a hidden storage bin under the "40" rear seat that is accessible in "tall mode". Its still relatively analog without Honda sensing BS and smart key along with still simple to maintain. Finally, you don't have to worry about the carbon build up and oil blow by issues that the GK5's L15B1 has thanks to GDI.
Would love to snag a GE8 to finish the trio. Currently having a supercharged GD, a N/A or "charged" (since its a hybrid) CR-Z and eventually a turbocharged GE would be so nice.

It can be slow at times when like merging onto the freeway or going up hills, but I enjoy driving a slow car fast around around the city grocery shopping and what not haha. My paddle shifters helps with the acceleration, compensating for lack of manual, but definitely wish it had more power overall out of the box. They were on EM1 Civics and 2003 7th gen Civic EX. The only real difference is the tire size. Although some people claim the ones on the 7th gens are more polished, we don't see the difference.
