There are numerous eyewitnesses' accounts of Armed forces carrying out untold sufferings on Naga civilians during the early 90's. On mere suspicion they would arrest innocent Naga civilians and subjugated them to the most inhuman methods of torture. My mate's uncle still bear the scars of these torturous acts from that time. His head's crown part is scarred and bald due to one torturous act that was meted out on him by army personnel. He was tied upside down with his head touching the concrete floor, then the army personnel would viciously kick his head. It's a miracle that he is still alive today, although in a frail condition. Many of his friends were simply gunned down while they were working on their fields. Their dead bodies would later be carried to their respective homes not in a dignified manner but like pigs tied to bamboo poles while their guts and brains would drip and fall on the way.

There were stuff kept above the bodies with the intention to hide and they were sitting on it when the villagers came searching for the missing persons upon hearing gunshots. And after confirming the horrifying truth , the angry villagers obviously retaliated leading to more shootings and deaths.

In Manipur alone since 1979 there have 1500+ extra judicial killings. Court chose randomly 6 cases out of these and found all 6 to be fake encounters.
Just imagine how many innocents have died like this in whole of NE since AFSPA curse started upon the region.
Also so many women were raped were armed forces, Manorama’s case in 2004 is just one example.
Nothing happens to the guilty, they just go for trial under military court and later live scot free.

I feel that AFSPA has similarities to Colonial act and unless this is abolished it will be difficult to gain back normalcy. Despite the regrets there was no commitment from the Home Minister to punish those responsible for this cowardly act therefore it seems that AFSPA is more precious than life. Here I think that the Major who led to this tragedy must be stripped of his position and this should be made as an example to all in charge of such operations. Here his decision to fire at the pick up truck carrying the miners at 4p.m.when visibility was there should have asked the vehicle to stop and thereon checked the vehicle but he did not do so and also the army trying to unclothed the dead and put on camouflage clothes to give a wrong impression was caught red handed by the president of the BJP unit from that area and the fact that even the SDPO had to flee because of the firing from the AR jawans says it all. I think that Assam Rifles should be given a new face and integrate them to the main defence not Paramilitary. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you for your coverage of North East and bringing the Regions History to all of Mainland India.

The army couldn't cooked up a story because the villagers arrived before they could leave, I think. Otherwise, it's quite common in north eastern region to cook up a story. When I was in class 8, a young man who probably had some links with insurgents ( actually many people from extreme poverty used to have such links) was arrested while he was watching cricket while we were playing. He didn't offer any sort of resistance, he was completely unarmed, not even wearing a shoe. They carried him some 200 metres away and we were shouted to vacate the place. Soon, he was surrounded and we heard gunshots. The next day, the newspapers headlined he was killed in encounter and recovered so and so. I don't think most of the armed forces are of these type, but there are many officers and their favourite members who indulge in such type of activities either to get quick promotion or gallantry awards or in certain cases, due to hasty decisions. The AFSPA has been in force for almost 70 years in Manipur without achieving anything while causing violence and creating terror in the minds of people. People are very much Indian here, so they shouldn't be alienated further.

The HM Amit Shah claims a mistake of oversight on the Army's behalf while seated in New Delhi, on the other hand villagers who were first on site speak of attempt to conceal and frame, as observed by the discovery of naked corpses hastily being dressed in fatigues and guns being planted. Who anyone chooses to believe is a matter of morals and principles. The one thing that is inarguable is that these were innocent, poor laborers.
Nagaland has been a land under siege for decades now and encounters and operations have been seared into the public consciousness. Any outsider who seeks the truth need only ask one question. What is different this time? It is all well and good to talk about national integrity, neutralizing hostiles, and regrettable mistakes, but to those on the receiving end only regret and rage reverberate. Louder than gunshots, hotter than the sting of widows' tears.

No apology expressed....just a regret by the Home minister. This is inaccessible. Please don't try and appease us just like that.

The greatest feat of solidifying peace and bringing about a honorable solution to the decades old naga political issue, would be repealing the draconian and inhuman act of AFSPA.
Modi and BJP govt with majority in the lok sabha has the opportunity to act. The concerted efforts under modi can have stronger conciliation with the naga people if this act is repealed and talks continue.
Thnk you sir shekhar ji for covering a contentious issue.
India whilst being the largest Democracy in the world has lot to answers to it's people.

    Sir ,
Let’s make one condition clear respectful to Nagaland .
India remains undisputed - Undivided .
May I rest my humble case .
Every condition/s could be discussed by the people in power in both regional and country capital /s .
It really pains me about this festering Naga issue .
    Good wishes from London

I am using this platform to voice a concern regarding the payment options available to prospective clients like me. I am surprised that net banking is not available as a payment option. Print's finance team is also not forthcoming enough as to why this platform is not available. I am sure Print clientele will increase if net banking is also available as a payment option.
