My uncle was shot at and had two bullet marks across his chest and back from 65 (across because he was 90 degrees from the shooter, and two because a bullet each tore through his front and back). His anecdotes used to be a lot like this. A general had written a long time ago of the ethos of the Indian army, where in the absence of the regiment pandit, the regiment maulvi calmly took over and conducted the Krishna sermon. Also, another anecdote, Muslim NCO's from the Madras regiment who were held captive in Pakistan had a lot of trouble from the Pakistanis who never believed that a Muslim cannot speak Urdu/Arabic, and the Sikh officer would be the go-between and do Tamil/Punjabi translation.

Just to add to this, there is a moving story from Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw who led the Indian forces in the 1971 war - a man who was known for his treatment of prisoners of war. He was called to Lahore by the Governor after the end of the war and as he was shaking the hands of the staff, one of the men took his turban off and laid it at the Field Marshall's feet. He thanked him for his generosity towards his 4 sons who were POWs in an Indian camp. In their letters to their father back in Lahore, they wrote about all prisoners having received Qurans, prisoners sleeping in barracks while Indian troops slept outside and so on.

@Munna Bhai M.B.B.S So a genocide becomes justified?? The Mukti Vahini committed mass genocide and gang rape against the Adivasis also in Chittagong hill tracts. And why would the Biharies support a bunch of militias who stood for Bengalee nationalism which excluded them??
@@edokan the way you portray biharies as innocent, i really wonder do you know them well enough or not! When operation searchlight began in march 25th, many of the biharies took up arms along side Pak soldiers. First of the atrocities carried out at Dhaka University (Jagannath Hall), Rajarbagh Police lines. There's some colonies around the Rajarbagh Police lines where I've been living for 20 years. It's a well known history among us (mainly to those who are the residents here in the colony) that then biharies residing in these colonies took up arms & attacked Rajarbagh Police lines with weapons supplied by the Pak forces. Yes, I agree Biharies faced a serious retribution. But you have to know India took 90,000 PAK POWS. If India left them here, maybe the atrocities would've been commited towards 90,000 soldiers not to the so called innocent biharies. I must also add here that we even punished some of our own bengali people for supporting Pakistan back then. It's a shame for pakistanis that their Bihari brothers suffered for their atrocities yet in 50 years they never even tried to take them back. So much for supporting Pakistan i guess 😅 and you ask why would the Biharies support "a bunch of militias" who stood for Bengalee nationalism? Firstly, we're the native people here with lineage going back thousands of years and a small group of people who came 20 years ago didn't matter much. and lastly, "a bunch of militias" gave birth to an independent nation defeating a state's military. I hope Pak army never forget the monsoon in Bangladesh.
SG's words at the end reminded me of a docu-series I watched recently about the Vietnam War. A North Vietnamese general was interviewed and he started by saying "Soldiers never talk about who won and who lost in wars, only the ones who never fought talk about winning and losing. In war no one wins, there's only destruction all around". He's a tough guy but you could just see the pain in his face when he said those words, as if the entire war is flashing in front of his eyes while talking.

Amazing 70+ years later East Pakistan is now Shonar Bongla. Interestingly, Bangladesh allocates just 1.1% of its National GDP towards Defense Spending leaving enough budget for other human development. Thats a blessing in disguise for Bangladesh which is now ahead of Pakistan economically.

Shekhar Sir, this has to be the best “Cut The Clutter” episode I have watched. It is journalism at its finest and your storied experience shone through all the time as you effortlessly took us all back 50 years in time. The human factor in war is always an afterthought for the general populace who were not directly involved in the war. Victory, Defeat or Stalemate are memories that stand etched in our minds when we recall wars but soldiers and their families would recall those moments differently. They would view them in another dimension, through a “personal lens” as they had a front row seat, often with lethal consequences. In today’s episode, your brilliant journalistic storytelling put us, the viewers, in the passenger seat, right beside the soldiers as they went about their business. Thanks so much.

In Bangladesh, money is not wasted on defence and on nuclear weapons - unlike Pakistan's, where hate for India and Hindus, in particular, is consuming it. And then it is ethnically more homogenous, one language, one script. But the percentage of non-believers is steadily decreasing even in Bangladesh - from 30% to 7% now. It will be 0% pretty soon I guess. Do we want that in India?
The fact that Hindu population has reduced significantly in Bangladesh and attacks on Hindus are a norm, proves that Bangladesh is Bengali speaking Pakistan.

Having said that, I came to notice that you've said the Liberation War only lasted for 13 days. We Bangladeshi's and Mukti Joddha's fought for 9 long months. Of course, India join us on the 3rd of December. The war LASTED FOR 9 MONTHS, not 13 days!!!! In these 9 months, we lost approximately 3 million martyrs. Thanks. Please correct that information if possible. Thanks.

All those values are being forgotten sadly, Pakistan isi funded brainwashing groups have got a grip of your country, spreading deep fundamentalist ideals that goes against Bangladesh's whole foundation.
Edit: I think the uniqueness of Bangladesh is it's culture, don't lose it, some country wants you to lose your culture and join them voluntarily, don't let it happen. Consider me a well wisher from the other Bengal.
We Bangladeshies always have a very very soft corner not only because India was with us in independence but also because we share same culture and always will be. Books written before 1971 by the writers from Bangladesh always used to have characters from Tamil Nadu or Bihar or Delhi. Whereas Kolkata and Punjab was like we're one in a bunch of trees. Meghalaya and assams are still like our home. Politics differed us but we're and will always be united. Happy Victory day. ✌

I was young boy of 13 years of age sitting inf ront of the President VV Giri in 1972 ( republic Day Parade) when the four PVC were given postumosusly to three Viz . Lance Naik Albert Ekka , Sq. Leader Sekon, Lt Arun Khetrapal and of course Major Hoshiar Singh who smartly walked to get the honour. I was just a feet away sitting of the carpet and watching Genl. Sam Mankeshaw, Air Marshal PC Lal and Admiral SM Nanda speaking among themselves after winning the war. The memory of scenes is still etched in me. My father was in Defence Ministry and was incharge of V1 and V2 enclosures then in the Republic day parade.I am 62 now. But the occasion was inspirational to me and I did write NDA exam but could not qualify .

We need people like you. God bless you and let you guide us for many many more years. The world needs people like you badly. Thanks again for such a great wonderful episode.
I can't imagine the pain Bengali people have suffered Just because of there language, colour and culture.
Forgive But Never forget. Shame on 🇵🇰
and don't forget the Bihari and the Adivasi genocides also.
West Bengal is also full of Bengali people in case you did not know.
Same is going on in India with Hindi imposition
So much for supporting Pakistan i guess 😅
and you ask why would the Biharies support "a bunch of militias" who stood for Bengalee nationalism?

Shekar Ji, Great nostalgic remembrances. All I remember as a young kid from that period was
downing of Sabre jets by IAF pilots, listening to short wave radio BBC news and a camp outskirts of my city where Bangladeshi refugees lived in Tents (like Palestinians) and the 5 paisa Refugee Stamp we had to affix to each envelope.
We take pride in saying that India played a major role in liberating BANGLADESH, Do history books in Bangladesh give credit to India for our role in their freedom struggle. Many of the young Bangladeshis claim that they fought Pakistan and secured freedom.
They don't.
They do, at least, most of them

Thank you so much Mr. Gupta for such an interesting and detailed episode, my father is also an ex- Indian airforce officer , i am sure he would love to hear this story.

To be honest as a Bangladeshi I think that's an insult to Bangladesh because Bangladesh declare war against Pakistan on the 26th Of March 1971 and get our victory on 16th December 1971. Thanks.
mukti bahini, the bangali resistance force, backed by indian government, from east Pakistan, killed non-bangalis (primarily West Pakistanis and biharis) in the aftermath of the bangladesh liberation war
