Incredible Story of Col Sajjad, Bengali in Pak Army, Who Gave India Secrets that Helped Win 1971 War

- 50 years ago in August 1971, a 20-year old Bengali officer serving as a Lieutenant in Pakistan’s elite 14th Para-Brigade, stationed in Sialkot, crossed the border carrying in his boots critical military documents and vital battle information which, months later, invaluably helped the Indian army win the war between India and Pakistan. That officer’s name was Lt. Col. Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir. Today, in an exclusive 29-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, he recounts and relives the almost unbelievable story that made him one of the youngest war heroes of 1971.
Col. Sajjad - as he now is - tells the story of his escape from Pakistan and why he believed he had to do this. He recounts how he had to hide in a gorge to avoid firing and deliberately did not surrender to the BSF for fear they might “trade him” with the Jhelum Rangers but chose instead to be captured by the CRPF, very close to the Samba Highway.

Listening to this interview I could not have imaginened those days that, this kind of thing could also happen, a young Pak lt.taking such a drastic unbelievable step, to save mother land, and it's fellow citizens, crossing over to Indian side of border,a really perfect stuff for Bollywood.
Respected Col.Saheb , may almighty bless you with long happy and healthy and prosperous Life.

Brilliant Interview,A classic narration can be made into a full wa r movie .
You are right.. don't worry , planning for a film and Sajjad who is actually not Sajjad is just here to give interview. these are first steps of film making because they know but you don't know that Pakistan is also making a film "lost forever" and to counter it they are going to produce a movie.
Being a Bangladeshi I'm proud of you sir.

Very nice interview. Was wondering 2 -3 days back while watching 71 war documentary , how many war heros of 71 war would be alive since it's been 50 years and average age of a soldier would be 30 years. Here we could listen to a hero who was 20 yrs old that time and he can still move people to tears thinking about that time and lamenting the loss his parents. I Wish Good health to Col Sajid. You are doing a great job recognising war heros

Superb interview, for those who say India got freedom in 2014. You have to remember the amazing things that we have done for other nations. We are fortunate to have wonderful leader's, who made us noble in world stage. It's sad one man is trying to take all credit for it. Thanks for the interview.

Colonel Sajjad will make an extraordinary movie, believe me. Here is something that's simply mind blowing. Would be nothing less than blockbuster.
This was an incredible interview & what amazes me more is that Bollywood has not thought of making this into a movie over the last 50 years.
Now they will with Akshat Kumar as the Punjabi protagonist who gave these secrets.
@@newsjunkieish hahaha
You will get much more interesting stories of bravery, if you start reading about other Bangladeshi freedom fighters. It was a do or die situation for us. So the fighters had to do things which others in normal circumstances cannot even imagine. My 18 year old uncle fought for 9 months and was martyred with 11 bullets. My 18 year old nephew plays games all day 🙄
This is was untold story safety reason for col. Sajjad.
They offered Amitabh to play is sheikh mujibur and offered abhishek to play as young mujib. Bangladesh did not approve it. Bangladesh said please don’t stir the wound.
What comes forth at once is the humility and simplicity of Col Sajjad. An example to us all.
We were upper primary students then. We used to hear a lot of stories about killings and refugees pouring into India. The Indian News Review in the theatres was showing moving images of Bangladehis. I remember very well the 'Bangladesh tax' (10 paise) levied on cinema tickets. After the victory the college students in our town took out a huge procession in which we children shouted slogans. All that we knew was India defeated Pakistan and vivisected it. The whole nation was jubilant. Elders in our families got glued to radio sets and felt elated at the turn of events. Later we realized that national pride was at its zenith in December 1971, as never before or after. The sacrifices of East Bengalis are to be written in golden letters. Thousands of Bangladeshis like Col Sajjid had scripted a new chapter in the history of liberation struggles.
Thanks Karan and the Wire for such an interview. There are thousands of heroic stories in our war of Liberation. Almost every single person suffered in 1971. But, we are a grateful and dignified nation. Col. Sajjad carried that spirit. Hats off to him.
Thank you Col Sajjad for your service to our motherland.
Mr thapar absolutely amazing interview.
Can't be judgmental about col sagat's defection,,our people also followed and joined Netaji subash chander bose(INA)..
That be that ,you brought out that piece of history that most would have overlooked...
Most people know the story of a paf pilot flt lt Matuir rehman and pilot of Minas both honored by their respective countries after the war..where rehman wanted to defect to India in his T33 and pilot offr Minas failed his attempt.both died in the crash because young Minas fought with the controls and crashed the trainer aircraft...heros for their countries.

Touching story! Great interviewee. Impatient interviewer, as usual. Thapar is so interested in the military story that has been repeated so many time that he completely missed the human angle. Col Sajjad, it appears, was open to discussing the cost that his (and others' too) family - mother, sisters, father and brother - paid for his heroics deeds but Thapar wouldn't let him. We missed an opportunity to hear the untold story of millions of common Bangladeshis who fought for the independence of their country.
he is more or less interrogating him as if he is a Pakistani agent who was captured, Karan Thapar is a weird fellow tbh.
Important thing of col sajjad message is that legacy of 1971 should be remembered and good neighbourly relation strengthened and India as a big brother should treat BANGLADESH with dignity and World Guru image should not be forced upon.
thanks well said
Really incredible. A true warrior , freedom fighter of his country. I hope Bangladesh will ever be friendly with India. Indians are proud of the way Bangladesh is making economic progress and settled its disputes with India. There will of course be some pro Pakistani rogue elements. The nation will prosper if it keeps,up secular. The nation could be religious which is to be regarded as personal without mixing it up with administration, governance and politics to,prosper. Best wishes to Bangladesh.

Incredible story of courage and dedication
Many of my relatives were solider in Bangladesh fighting with Pakistani army , the Pakistani army had killed at least 4 millions Bangladeshi and raped hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi women, my uncle told me they found naked Bengali women in the bunker of Pakistani solider , Indian solider through their blanket shirts and even turban for these poor Bengali women , it was such an tragic situation in Bangladesh, the Pakistani general TIKKA KHAN openly declared in 1971 we need Bangladesh not Bengali .
Story of Bangladesh proves that….India was with humanity…..
Somebody's hero can at any time be called as somebody else's quisling!

Outstanding Boss
Karan, you did a good job for a change
Being a student of history my Question is?. Hussain Shaheed Suhraward raised the issue of "United Bengal" two or three times during the period 1937-46. Why Mr Nehru didn't help Suhrawardy in attaining his dream of United Bengal, instead rejected the idea when he contacted to Mr Nehru ?Where as Mr. Jinnah expressed his willing to cooperate with Suhrawerdy in attaining his political dream?
An excellent point very few people know about it. Perhaps Nehro wanted to snatch West Bengal.
Bangalis dont know this history about how Nehru played with them not giving them the united Bangal while Jinnah was all for it Banglais has a short memory and basically boot likers of their masters.
Nehru was cunning… He should not be the PM for India…
The reason United Bengal issue raised by Sharat Chandra Bose and Suhravardy was put down by Congress because Nehru didn't wanted to balkanize India and wanted as much as territory with India.

Thanks to Indian armed forces huge contribution during our freedom struggle 1971. No we have not forgotten. Yes my beloved Dhaka, the city of my birth is named after the Temple of Maa Dhakeshwari (Durga). Coming from a Muslim family; I am proud of this history and the beautiful name of the temple and the city. There is no point of following any religion if it cannot teach you humanity, tolerance, peace and harmony. Apart from few incidents here and there; we the Bangalis from Bangladesh irrespective of our religious background love to live together in peace. I guess for us the Bangalis at times, we love our food and culture are more important than our religions. Amar shonar bangla ami tomai onek beshi valobashi. Joy Bangla Jai hind.

Mr. Karan Thapar, I'm from Bangladesh and always an admirer of your wonderful presentations and interviews. Especially, we know from your interviews with different pesonalities about Indian democracy, rule of law and the press freedom. Do you know that consecutive Indian governments have been associated with undermining the democracy in Bangladesh? Our last election was even stolen by Sk Hasina regime overnight prior to election day! Astonishingly India and China have been behind this government. The US and democratic world are totally against this fascist regime because of destroying all of our institutions!
If Indian democracy is on life supported as mentioned by Mr. Siddart Vardarajan,Bangladesh democracy is about to be graved!
May I request you to get into the deep why our friends who helped us to gain independence in 1971 behind a party instead
of the people of Bangladesh? Still in your country you have voting rights but for the last 10 years Bangladeshi voters had no rights to cast their votes since this regime has become North Korean Kim like authortarian thug!
