- If you’re one of my younger viewers, you may not know much about this story since it took place eight years ago, but you need to understand that what we’re about to discuss is considered by most people as the biggest tech leak in history. And that probably sounds impossible since Apple is known for being the most secretive company in the world, I mean, they have multiple locks on labs with unreleased products, they have armored doors, they constantly change system passwords, and they even have their own security force patrolling their campus at all times for intruders and spies. And if that wasn’t enough, every prototype they built was kept under surveillance with restricted access only to people who were directly included in the products development.
And this is why most Apple employees are just as shocked as we are when the company introduces a new product. There was even a story about a worker being fired for showing an unreleased iPad to another Apple employee. So it’s pretty hard to imagine that a super secret iPhone prototype would appear on a random bar stool twenty miles away from Apple’s campus. But that just proves that no matter how hard a company tries to be perfect, it’ll eventually make a mistake since companies are just made up of humans, and humans are imperfect.
So this mistake had something to do with an unreleased iPhone 4 prototype, a tech news website called Gizmodo, and a very angry Steve Jobs.

Notice that Apple wouldn't have cared if concepts of it were leaked, they were angered because Gizmodo got a working upcoming product. It ruined any hype of suspension regarding the phone

If Steve was that pissed, and he seemed to be.. the guy who lost it has to be dead lol “still working for apple...” suuuure, they probably mean he’s buried under an apple tree at their campus, thus still employed by apple as fertilizer.

Well, I'm quite certain Gizmodo made a pretty decent scapegoat of itself with which to draw Job's wrath.
Undoubtedly, misplaced prototypes happen and Apple knows this and accepts this risk in performing field tests. It doesn't seem that Job's was angry at the engineer, so much as the individual that sold the lost phone to the press (Gizmodo).
I don't feel particularly sorry for the police raids and financial losses that occured when the respective proper (and decidedly legal) courses of action are to turn the lost property over to the proper authorities and to not knowingly purchase lost property.
I think the guy that found it should have mailed it to Apple. Or done so to Steve Jobs. It would have turned up to them at that point. Surely they would take more care if given proof

So the "genius" didn't believe the guy's story about the prototype which is understandable. The guy could have literally walked into an Apple store and showed them the prototype...
More direct than that: he found it at a bar near Apple HQ. He could have just dropped it off at the security desk in Apple's lobby.

I forgot how much of a big deal this was. I actually still own an iPhone 4 because it’s my favorite design. It never gets used, but I like having it.

I was in high school when this happened; my graphic design teacher (who also loved Apple) pulled up the Gizmodo page on the projector, showing the whole class. I had to pull up the same page on my own computer at the same time just to confirm that it was real. That was seriously an exciting day for me.

Dang, what a story. I remember when Gizmodo broke the news and it was all everyone's mouth. I will definitely read into Brian's AMA. By the way, I'm waiting on some Hollywood producer to turn this into a movie. David Fincher would definitely be the one for this; add Trez Reznor and Atticus Ross for the OST and you've got a badass movie.

I was a regular Gizmodo reader back then, I was so amazed by this while it was happening it was such a big deal. Gizmodo was barred from life from Apple events for this and were bitter ever since. The only thing I could think of for comparison would be someone finding a copy of Avengers End Game today.
You can’t blame apple for banning them, and they really have nothing to be bitter about since they were literally making unauthorized leaks of a prototype product from a company that is very serious regarding unreleased devices. They should have thought of the consequences before they made the article
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that even though he is a huge fan of Apple, he isn’t afraid to share Apple’s failures and imperfections.

It wasn’t Apple that ruined Hogan’s life. It was the publicity that followed throughout the time the phone was in his possession. Most of the fault falls on Gizmodo for not only them not honoring their deal with Hogan, but throwing him under the bus in follow up articles.

The iPhone 4/4s is still my favorite design and SO much easier to open and replace battery, etc.

I think Steve knew what he was doing with this story. He realised what’s done is done but it could help build Apples mystique, the fact someone’s door was kicked down was mostly for dramatic purposes and to make Apple seem powerful. There was an aura of fascination around Apple at that time and Steve certainly used this to build that and while an image of the iPhone leaked, an image of Apple was painted.
The image, if you don't watch this video, is that Apple is ok with Leaks, and that ultimately makes Apple products seen cool and exclusive.
If you watch this video, it's clearly one of the worlds largest companies bullying a guy who couldn't defend himself.
My iPhone 4 from 2011 is my centerfold of my iPhone collection. Pristine even with the wifi antenna defect. Great video again, man. Love them.
God I remember all of this. Was living in Orlando, FL at the time working at Disney World. I had bought a brand new Late-2009 MacBook Pro because I was just getting into video editing and was running a copy of Final Cut Studio 3 Academic Edition on Leopard. I wanted an iPhone so bad but couldn’t afford it so instead was using an LG enV 2 on Verizon. My roommate was huge into Apple and had the 3GS and was talking about how he was going to pre-order the 4 when it was announced. It was awesome getting to see the iPhone 4 in such detail even if it was disabled through MobileMe.

Woo, that was a roller coaster. Although I was around at that time I was mostly focused on PC tech and didn't get my first smart phone until 2013/2014. Heck of a story.

All Gray Powell needs to put on his resume is “I lost an iPhone prototype, Steve Jobs found out, and I didn’t get fired”. If that isn’t proof that you are a great engineer, I don’t know what is.
Either that or it was a controlled leak. Stir up some controversy and get some free coverage? Why not? 🤔
What surprises me the most about this is that the engineer kept his job. Nowadays you can pretty much guarantee the Apple executives would want to make an example of him.

I really don't believe that guy REALLY went through ALL that effort to identify the phone owner. He probably made all that shit up to avoid responsibility. He saw the phone, yoinked it, didn't realize it was an unreleased prototype.

Today is October 9th, 2018. The day the Pixel 3 was released.
Apple should know that lost and/or abandoned property is not stolen. I’m not quite sure just HOW they got a warrant and were able to use a PRIVATE police force. Aren’t those very limited in what they can do? I would have skipped town and taken ALL my stuff with me if I had the 4 prototype. There were definitely MANY privacy laws broken by Apple in this situation and I would have ABSOLUTELY sued them to high hell. Actually, I may have sold the prototype to Samsung for a pretty penny. Probably for tens of millions. Oh well. It’s been 8 years and only one of us was unfortunate enough to cross Steve Jobs.

Gizmodo really did that guy dirty. He didn't get the bonus and had to cover the legal fees? That makes being a good Samaritan who just wants to return a phone to their owner a lot harder.
