EVERYONE Said I SHOULDN'T Do THIS To My Nissan GT-R!

- In todays video I do some DIY maintenance on my 2014 R35 Nissan GT-R!
When I bought the car, I had the shop do an oil change just to make sure it was ready to go. I was a bit intimidated when I first bought the car to do it myself because everyone said it would be so much work on a car like this.
Changing the oil on my Nissan GT-R was actually easier to do than my Nissan 370Z! Only one under-tray had to come down, and that had less bolts than the under-tray that gets removed on the 370Z for the oil change.
Once that was off I simply removed the drain plug and oil filter to let it drain. Once it was drained I re-installed the oil pan drain plug and put in the new K&N oil filter. Filled it up with about 5.3 quarts of Mobile1 Full Synthetic 0w40 oil, and the GT-R was good to go!
I'm not sure how much Nissan will charge for parts and labor to do an oil change on the GT-R, but don't waste the time and money at the dealership for them to do it. This takes less than an hour and couldn't be more simple to do.
I'm sure the time it would take to drive to the dealer and back, you could have this done yourself and save a good $200 or so. And have the pride in working on your car yourself ;)
Now that I changed the oil in my Nissan GT-R, it is good to go! I went about 5,000 miles on this oil which is fine for full synthetic. A lot of time people recommend 10,000 mile intervals for synthetic oil. But I figured it couldn't hurt to go ahead and do this now.
Overall I spent about $75 on the oil and filter. So I think that is very cheap annual maintenance for the car. I actually did this video before I had my car out on the airstrip racing against the McLaren 650S. Because I was dong that, and will be taking the GT-R on the race track later this month. I wanted to go ahead and change it now. As it sits, I've done a drag racing event, a ton of launch control runs, and several 100 mph data log runs on this oil. So it had a little abuse under its belt and to get ready for the airstrip event and race track day, I wanted fresh oil before hand.
Here is a link to me racing my Nissan GT-R against an 800 WHP McLaren 650S if you missed that video!
• Nobody Thought My Niss...
With all that said. If you own a Nissan GT-R, do the oil change yourself. It is way too easy to not do the work yourself! :)

Pro tip. When you are draining the oil. With the oil cap, filter, drain bolt, and dip stick removed. Dump half a new quart of oil in the motor to push even more of the old oil out.
Good video!
Please, stop making these clickbait title... Just upload it normally, we will watch it anyway
Dark smoke flows way better, matches the wheels and paint way better than the light smoke tint
That's what I'm thinking
Great minds
I think You should open the oil cap and dipstick while draining the oil
Non the less great job
When draining the oil on my R35 I like to get out as much old oil from the oil pan as possible, this can be accomplished by raising the drivers side higher using the floor jack when draining. Also for an added note you can purchase the mobil 1 0w-40 5qt jug at walmart for less than $30 to save a few more $$
Frank Thomas wow I’ll have to do that next time! I saved the 3/4 full quart I had left over. So next change I’ll just buy that 5 quart and use 1/4 from this one
Your girlfriend getting her hands dirty , you are one lucky guy.
haha oh yeah!
I agree, seeing her with those painted nails helping out I thought was cool.
I agree.
I'm with you, I enjoy and find it relaxing changing my own oil and doing my own tune-ups. I also like knowing it was done right. Haha
I've always used Mobil 1 and it wasn't until you got underneath the car that I realized why you didn't use the Mobil 1 Oil Filter too.
Love that throaty sound of the GT_R
Yeah that bolt on the K&N makes them worth it. I love working on my car myself. Just makes me more proud to do it. Anyone can throw money at someone do do things for them, but it takes the fun out of the experience. I really love the Armytrix system ;)
Dark smoke and you are a lucky man to have a women in your life that helps work on YOUR cars
Mahfuz A Haha yeah, she loves working with me on the car!
Lucky one indeed
I only use kn filters because of that nut at the end. Makes life a crap ton easier when changing oil. Great stuff bud! I always see people arguing about oil. Oil is oil. As long as it's a reputable brand, one should be alright. If you want *not necessarily need* more protection then amsoil, royal purple, redline, or Brad Penn is the way to go
On my R6, it had a Yamaha filter on it when I bought it. It took us an hour to get it off since it was so tight and had nothing to grip. The K&N is so easy to get off even if someone cranked it down. I've seen a lot of oil tests showing they are pretty much all the same. Nissan recommends Mobile1, so I'll stick with it lol
Mate when you check your oil on the dip stick it’s still black in colour. Next time when you drain the oil make sure the engine oil cap is remove and make sure it’s on a flat surface. Your cars still levelled on stones...should be clear gold oil colour. Black means too much old oil still inside. Hope this helps!
My local Nissan dealer it's $220 for an oil change. Thats using standard 0w40 Nissan oil. Recently did it myself using Motul 300V oil and Nissan OEM filter. Total cost around $80.
Not too bad. Motul doesnt seem to ever be discounted lol. Got my stuff on sale for like $35 total a few times with the filter
Wouldnt it be best to fill up the oil as the car is raised? And turn it on and wait like 5 minutes and check if theres any leaks i saw you put everything back and lowered the car then put the oil you not worried for leaks? Via oil filter and bolt( not saying you didnt do it right) i usually run my honda as its raised to see forbleaks then i put undertray and lower and work on seeing that the dipstick os good or am i doint it wrong?
Yeah that's a great way to do it for sure. Depends on what you want to do. I owned this car for almost 6 years and never had a leak doing an oil change. But certainly good to fill it slowly and double check. I just changed the oil for the first time on my Lamborghini. And I triple checked all the plugs before putting the under trays back on. So whatever you're comfortable with.
If you want to stop getting oil everywhere when pulling your oil filter . Put a piece of cardboard between the filter and the undercarriage, it'll use it like a slide and drain right into the drain pan. If you use 0-40 Mobil one then only use European formula , it's the only.one with zinc in it still. Nissan also doesn't recommend using mobil one anymore, use motul, AMS oil, Castrol or something that still uses zinc . Also if you have a tune , use e-85 and use bigger injectors , you should change it every 3k, even though it's synthetic. You do get blow by running 18 psi and e-85. Where do you think the fuel goes? I'll give you a hint, your oil pan.
That brass washer on the drain plug is a one time use crush washer. Oil will leak out of there. I got a bag of like 20 for a couple bucks from the dealer.
Brian the type of dude to make a video with a title “get these hp gains with this oil filter” 😂
You are a real car guy 🤣 you even work on your own R35 on most videos, its not always owners would do that on their R35 , keep up the good videos!
Thanks! I'll pretty much always work on my own car :)
Please add some oil into the filter before placing the new item into the GTR, also use only 5 Qts of oil. The GTR manual indicates that it will have a better performance.
You're definitely lucky having a having a Nissan GTR and it was fun watching you change your oil and also you are right about it being pointless for that drain plug cover being right there.
Aaron Martin TV haha thanks. Yeh idk who would change the oil without replacing the filter too. Especially on this car. Would of been nice if they made a bigger door down there with just a few bolts so you could get to both
You are bang on. Oil change at the Dealership is $300+
That's crazy! Such a rip off!
Lyndon Hodgins no they don't take money from you at the dealership, they give you money and a hug for being a good boy changing the oil
$220
Lyndon Hodgins try $200
Thank you for your demonstration.
Glad it was helpful! GTR has been a super easy car to maintain!
I'd say Ms. Bros deserves a pink GTR of her own after this.
Dark Smoke FTW.
And it ain't even close.
lol, that seems to be the popular vote
Dope! I’m too lazy to do my own oil changes
bro so when are the downpipes getting installed? My flex pipe keeps going out it’s the second time I’ll make a video so you can hear it
Dark smoke on the lights. I was told Nissan doesn't recommend Mobile one anymore since they changed their formula. I use Motul
I Have a 2017. The Nissan service department guy told me the same thing. But I think it was only for a while and then they returned to the original formula? Any input or updates that you have heard of?
@@willc9222 no recent updates.
The grey looks so good for this car, I have the black on atm, I think I want to get my car painted in a darker grey like a gun metal.
Oh cool!
question. is the oil filter the same for every gtr? i see one for sale but it says fits 09 to 12 gtr. it's the same engine. why wouldn't fit the 13 gtr?
I'm not too sure. I just go with the one that it calls for with a 2014
You can use break cleaner to spray all the oil that gets every where it’s the best way and it’s fast
You should really fill the oil filter as much as possible to prevent no oil starts.... cleanup from draining is easily handled with a can of brake cleaner, and a rag. What you can't get with the rag, the brake cleaner will get.. just drain it into the oil drain pan.. worked I a shop, this is what we did to locate leaks, and to clean up the undercarriage after messy oil changes..
killahjeep Good tips! Thanks
Hand tighten the oil filter?....shouldn't it be torqued down like the sump plug?...my M3 has to be torqued down on both, just saying.
Supercar Qatar I was always taught to hand tighten them. I’ve never had issues in the last 9 years of driving
Hey Bro. Maybe when you drain it, instead of setting it level by dropping the fronts again. Maybe you can just lift up the rear with the jack stands still in the front. Saves some labor and time 😁
lol other people have said that. I didn't even think of that
Are you going to buy a low level scissor lift since you have the space in your garage? It beats jacking it up and putting it on axle stands,
Dddd Cccc I want too! Once I buy my own house I’ll do a lift system.
I think you left the part out where you dropped the thingy mah bobber on my head
I do not recall that happening...... I'm an expert...
I have video proof 👀
Nicole Watson I have the raw clips 😉
Easy stuff...You've saved a couple of bucks right there!
Ponani Nyoni-23 Yeah so simple even for a car like this
So much help on the oil change what with your girlfriend and Mattie! Don’t know many girlfriends that would get up under there, lol. You saved a bunch of money doing it yourself. I think I would go light smoke or stock on the side markers. Good job!
David Nilles Haha yeah the help was appreciated 😀. I’m still undecided on the tints lol
Awesome...keep up your good work bro. Respect you.
Spectaculair dark smoke !! I like that..!
its a socket. A bolt is a different thing entirely.
Plastic grocery bag over the mount/bracket/thing of bolts to create a channel for the oil to run down to the drain pan. You could use the red shop rags too but unless you can drop the rags off to the dealer for cleaning, it’s a waste.
Stock but dark smoke looks good
dark smoke for sure. where did you get the film? got a brand you recommend?
I ended up doing dark all around. I bought it from metro restyling.com
"Bros FOURR Speed - not bad but for the next time don't forget to apply a bit of oil on filter gasket and prefill half way your new filter with fresh oil before install as you will prevent dry run for a few sec. before filter get filled itself.
Pole I put some oil on the rubber O-ring. Didn’t think about filling the filter with anything tho.
Next time just raise the back with your jack to level it, much easier
PR M5 dang that’s a good point!
Dark in front, light in rear. Did you measure volume of old oil?
Yeah about the same amount came out as I put in. I'm used to turbo cars burning a bit of oil, but over 5 quarts came out.
From what you did I can’t see why your oil change would cost anymore at the dealer than my Nissan Titan truck. It takes about 6.5-7 quarts. The dealership always sends me oil change coupons for $20.00 semi-synthetic or $35.00 for full synthetic. I can’t do it myself for less than that so I take it to them. Of course the idea is for them to find something wrong with the car while you’re there but I’m always on top of any maintenance so they never find anything.
The sad thing is, GTR tax. Nissan literally screws over GTR owners just because it's a GTR. No matter the service, they triple the normal price for GTR's just because they now owners who bring their cars in will pay it. For you Titan, thats just a normal vehicle and sounds like a great deal taking it to the dealer. But the GTR doesn't get the normal things lol. DIY is the way to go for this car if you know what you're doing. And I save a ton of $ ;)
OK if I was paying more for the same services as everyone else I’d be insisting on VIP treatment to go along with the VIP prices. VIP lounge, nice lunch, dinner...something:)
Kevin Knotts Thats Nissan for you! They screw over the people who bought their flagship car 😅
Anyone use brake cleaner to clean up oil residue after an oil change? I use it on all my oil changes and it leaves the working area super clean. Great vid, cheers.
I do all the time.
dark in the front light in the rear unless its the lighting from being in the front of the garage vs the back i cant tell
hey love the car, ill have at gtr one day, i was wondering, what do you do for a living?
Dylan Case Thanks! Here is how I was able to buy this car. ruclips.net/video/m4FKKlAGdEk/видео.html
Mobil 1 in a GTR what ?? Its the worst man ... I advise AMSOIL, this is just the best by far...
Nissan recommends mobil 1..
I only use valvoline 10w30 racing oil (High Zinc)
And he's using a trash k&n filter
Bros FOURR Speed if you daily drive a brand new no hard stuff only daily basis does it still consume a lot of oil
Bros FOURR Speed also if I daily drive mines to work only no racing no hard stuff how many times do I need to put more oil
Great video man!!! You did a awesome job on your oil change!!! I love the light smoke better! Do you and your brother like hocking loogies? I do it's a guy thing lol! I can't wait for y'all next video.
Does the GT-R burn oil?
Not really. Maybe less then 1/4 quart every change. Most turbo cars burn a bit
Ooooo noooo dirty paper towel were the oil filter gasket sits baaaad idea lol
Great vid, and i looked on jalopnik and some one had said their oil change was 2k.
Wow! That's a complete rip off! When I bought it, my friends shop did it for me for $20. Nissan is stupid if they actually charge in the thousands
are you going to do the trans fluid change yourself?
usually a bad idea to change trans fluid so early
KlutchDr When the time comes, I’m thinking to do it myself
very nice, it only cost me 17.95 at the dealership for my full synthetic oil change so I'll stick to the dealership lol
stang killer haha nice. Is that including the oil and filter?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed yup and nice check of everything, originally its 49.99 but its a special the dealership does every Friday, love it
@@BrosFOURRSpeed and recommend the dark smoke looks much better, got mine ghosted with the same color as the paint and nice led strip running down it
Wow! I'd stick with the dealer for that too at that price ;)
god knows what he put there for oil lol
I like dark on the darker color car.
The light one's better for me
Wonder how hard is changing other fluids. Didn’t expect a gt-r’s oil change to be that simple
V random Oil is definitely easy. I’ve seen videos on the transmission flush. It’s pretty extensive. When the time comes, I might still tackle it myself tho
Bros FOURR Speed i can see you doing that. All i can do now is wait
V random lol I’ll have to see when I need to do it. It doesn’t look too hard. Just time consuming
@@BrosFOURRSpeed drivetrain fluids every 10k miles bro.
Light smoke or stock
Can you research and do a transmission and diff oil change?
Michael Zeiss I’m planning on doing it myself. It’s a bit extensive. So I definitely need to do more research on it. But I’ve seen vids of people doing it.
I change the oil on my Mercedes as you do.cause in Australia it cost 1200.00 for the oil change. You wouldn't believe it. Rip off man
Wow thats crazy! I think Nissan wants like $300 for this!! Insane!
Do the dark tint on your light reflectors
And you should do the tail lights dark but leave the center circle in the tail light clear untouch..
Dark smoke looks better
I didn’t know that GTRs only take around 6 quarts! I thought it would be more.
DOWORK EXOTICS It’s pretty much the same engine as the Z
Do GTR’s always have that much valvetrain noise? Low key worried for ya😂
Yup. The transmission rattles while idling. Definitely one of the annoying things about it lol
dark tint is better. Do they tail and headlights too!
stratusedge2k7 I tried the tails, but it was a hard piece to wrap. I might give it another shot. But I’ll want to remove the lights first
@@BrosFOURRSpeed have you tried nite shades? I know the spray is permanent but it's an option.
stratusedge2k7 Haven’t thought of it. But definitely an option
really used a break bar on the drain plug and filter 😭
Light looks more cleaner
Some pointers for you my guy. Mobil1 is junk, use royal purple or redline oil. If your not on e85 change oil every 1500-2k miles, the fresher the oil the better. Buy a Greddy magnetic oil plug. Fill your filter with oil, your putting a lot of air through the engine at start up.
Nissan Dealer quoted me $299 parts and labor. $199 if I brought my own oil and filter .
Lenn77 dang. That’s a rip off
where did you put your jackstand?
under the lower control arms where it bolts to the frame. And I kept the jacks in place under the jack points
You should put in oil in filter to help with the start. Before you install in half fill and put in.
Clean
Glad you enjoyed this video!
dark smoke front, light smoke rear
craig g not a bad way to go. I was thinking of that too
Use brake cleaner That way you’ll have your car so clean No oil on
Mobil 1 is straight garbage. Get some Motul.
Use Amsoil!!
Dark smoke all the way
9:19 *heavy breathing begins*
Yup. Heard them too. Love the observation.... what kind of people ARE we? Exercise coaches? Respiratory therapists? Anesthetists? Scuba divers? 😮
William Campos all of the above?
Dark smoke tint
GTR is GTR !
very true
You should get some Vossen VFS-1's
Dark smoke!
I think you forgot to tighten you oil filter, I think you only hand tightened it.
Johnboy I did only hand tighten it. That’s what I’ve always done.
You should always do an extra 1/4 turn after hand tight. Took my car to the mechanic once and the oil filter came loose, causing it to leak heavily on the road and seized the motor. Rather be safe then sorry and tighten her up. 🤘
So everyone said to not do an oil change on your car?
Time to get a new wheel
Please be careful in your GT-R. A 54 year old man was killed in a GT-R in Nashville, TN when someone threw a chunk of concrete off an overpass into his car.
I saw that, that is awful, I don't understand why someone would do that.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I don't know why they did it, but that car was definitely targeted. At 4 AM on a Tuesday morning, I have a hard time believing it was juveniles. There's a lot of jealousy and hate in the world today, so just be careful with your car.
ɹǝɔʞๅǝss ɐqɐupou Yeah whoever did that needs to go to jail for life. That’s horrible
@@BrosFOURRSpeed So sad, the guy was actually a Nissan employee. He was on his way to work at the Smyrna, TN factory.
@@user-pt6io2cq9n Dang that definitely sucks. Whoever did it will end up getting what they deserves.
Maddie need to have car too.
Light smoke 100%. The Dark looks darker than your paint and doesn't look as sleek. Too ricer...
Brandon Casso true. I’m still torn
Dark on front light on rear...
It looks like you might have spilled a little on your yellow lab
lol
I will never bring it to the dealership
Cause i have no gtr 😪😭
Dark infront light in back
EVERYONE TOLD ME to STOP making CLICKBAIT TITLES on my videos!!!?!??!!
Light
Nice. Why did everyone say you shouldn't do that?
Everyone said to bring it to the dealer because it's 'hard' to do maintenance on a GT-R. Turns out, it's just a normal car.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Yeah good call! It's still just an engine, with an oil plug and a filter. haha :D
Uh oh safety hazard here I see that you got two skinny wood blocks holding the rear wheels and that the car jacks in the front are not set level they are at slope. The car can move forward and fall on you killing both you and your spouse this is very dangerous. At the very least you should get wheel chocks to secure the rear wheels and place wheels under the car toward the front for backup in case if something goes down. Or just get car ramps. All these are affordable ways to provide safety to you and your people.
IneedMoney I agree with what you are saying. But with the car in park, e brake one and the wood pieces in front of the rear wheels. It’s not going to move. Also I’m on flat ground in the garage. And the jack stands were on the cement and in a good secure spot under the control arms. And the floor jacks were still in place under the jack points. Safety is number one. But many things would of had to go wrong for the car to move.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed - Thanks for the reply. I thought the second half part of floor of the garage is at a slight slope they are not completely flat at least that's how it was with my new house when I had one. I didn't realize you still had floor jacks still on there supporting the car yeah that certainly helps.
IneedMoney If there is a slope in the garage it’s very slight. But I had a bunch of precautions in place that it would be super unlikely for all of them to fail at the same time. But next time I won’t put the jack stands on the lip of the garage floor.
I LOVE YOUR SPIRIT, BUT YOU HAVE A LOT TO LEARN. IS THIS A STOCK HORSE POWER CAR. JUST SO YOU KNOW TREAT THIS CAR LIKE IT'S A "RACE CAR", AND REMEMBER EVERY TIME YOU LAUNCH THIS CAR SITTING STILL YOU ABSOLUTLY RUIN THE ENGINE A LITTLE MORE EACH TIME AND THE TRANNY. THE MOBILE ONE YOUR USING IF YOU BOUGHT IT AT WAL MART OR AUTO ZONE IS NOT THE MOBILE ONE YOU THINK IT IS. IT'S COMMERCIAL GRADE SHIT. OK FOR REGULAR CARS BUT NOT A GTR. MY GTR WAS BUILT BY SWITZER PERFORMANCE IN CLEVELAND. THEY WERE THE FIRST TO BUILD BIG HP GTRs PROBABLY 16 YRS AGO. MINE IS 1400 HP, AND HAS "NEVER" BEEN LAUNCHED. BAD ,BAD, THING TO DO.. YOU NEED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR LOCAL MOBILE ONE DISTRIBUTOR AND ASK TO SPEAK WITH THE RACE DIVISION HOT SHOT. HE WILL SELL YOU (RACE OIL), TOTALY DIFFERENT THAN STORE OIL, AND FORMULATED FOR FORMULA ONE , NASCAR AND DRAG RACING. A WHOLE DIFFERENT ANIMAL OF OIL. WHAT STATE ARE YOU IN. I'M IN CLEVELAND. I HAVE BEEN RACING SINCE 1964 AND HAVE DONE ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE GOING TO DO 50 TIMES ALREADY. MY PARTNER 13 YEARS AGO HAD A LITTLE 911 PORSCHE CALLED THE SLEDGEHAMMER!! IT'S ON U TUBE AS 911 SLEDGEHAMMER. JUST A STREET CAR DAILY DRIVER WITH AIR CONDITIONING STERIO RADIO STREET CAR. DROVE IT TO NORWALK DRAG STRIP WITH STREET TIRES, NO BURN OUTS, DROVE IT ONE TIME AT 9 SECONDS. SO I THINK I KNOW JUST A LITTLE ABOUT "CARS". DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING THE TRANNY OIL ON YOUR OWN. "THANKS". REMEMBER THIS. WORKING ON THIS CAR IS "NOT" LIKE WORKING ON YOUR PICKUP TRUCK.
Shoot my dealer quoted 760+ for a oil change
wow thats crazy! Dealers rip GTR owners off all day long
Did you even have Maddie helping you dispose of the trash?
John Pace She did a great job braking down that box to fit in recycle 😅
*Clickbait* titles are dumb.
When you say clickbait, do you mean the title and thumbnail were misleading or catchy?
Because people literally contently told me I should never do an oil change myself on the GTR. They said its super difficult and needs to be done by Nissan. And I found that it was way too easy of an oil change to waste the money letting a dealer do it.
