  • This fun and easy 5 minute lesson has helped me teach several young children to BLEND the letter sounds and get reading. This is the most highly requested video I get about reading. I hope your child has their AH-HA moment with this method. . . The most important thing is using HANDS ON MANIPULATIVES, practicing phonological awareness just before the lesson, and very very very important - correcting the child if they do not say the sound EXACTLY when you touch it.

    Full Story:
    This 3.5 year old lives in a bilingual, highly literate household with access to children's books in English and Korean. Child regularly gets books read to her (almost daily, alternating Korean and English). Parent had consistently used "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" for about a month, with the child unable to move past lesson 4. The child was too young to start the book, but the parent wanted an early start. The child can recognize 5-10 letter sounds, but couldn't blend them to form a word. I did a preliminary lesson with the child and realized despite being bright and motivated, she didn't have certain pre-reading skills to support her reading so she was getting frustrated with the 100 easy lessons book. Basically, she needed to play around with spoken English until she realized words were made up of different sounds. I made a plan to began lessons with the child, and on the first day she was able to blend. I will not reintroduce 100 Easy Lessons to the child at the moment -- we will sing songs, poems, and play games that support pre-reading skills instead. We will continue to learn new sounds and blend them, but I will wait until the child naturally wants to string sentences together.
