Saying you are going to have grits is like saying you are going to have rice or potatoes. There are thousands of ways to make them, and everyone likes something different. if you stuck a bowl of white rice on the table, you probably would not be too impressed, but give you a list of things you can choose to add and the story changes.

this kind of breakfast was common when people did a lot of manual labor.. this kept you going and not hungry until late dinner and gave you enough energy to do all that work through the whole day.... you worked so hard that you burned tons of calories and need a big breakfast like this to do all the work.... now that most people don't work like that, it's more of a weekend breakfast...

I have never been to Loveless Cafe and not sure where it is at, but I have heard about the food for years, especially the biscuits, A hashbrown casseroles are made differently everywhere. It looks like that casserole has shredded potatoes and cheese mixed together. They probably have other ingredients that I can't see, but I do see the shredded potatoes & cheese. When I went to visit my grandmother in Alabama, I woke up in the morning to the smell of bread baking, the aroma of coffee, the sound and aroma of bacon frying, and more. I ran into the kitchen to see if I could help with any of the cooking and was so shocked. I had never seen anything like it. My grandmother was taking a pan full of biscuits out of the oven, had bacon cooking in a skillet, potatoes frying in another skillet, and sausage gravy in another. On the table was a ham that she had sliced several pieces off of, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, cornbread, and some pancakes. She said she wasn't sure what we would like for breakfast, so she "cooked a few things in the hopes that we would eat something." WE PIGGED OUT AND ATE ALMOST EVERYTHING!! My grandmother was the most greatest and most amazing cook! I hope one day you and your family will be able to come to America, stay for several months, go to many places, and try the food from each region. Until then, may God Bless and Protect you and your family always and shower you all with many wonderful blessings.

Southerners eat biscuits with any meal! Growing up, we had biscuits with the vast majority of our meals-they’re fairly cheap to make.
You might enjoy another reactor’s video that goes through his first time with biscuits and gravy. The channel is Patrol Nation and Lyle is Australian. Not only was it his first time eating biscuits and gravy, he makes the biscuits and gravy himself. I think the video is titled something like “Aussie tries biscuits and gravy.” Cheesy grits are awesome! You do have to cook grits properly-they must be salted! Grits are somewhat like polenta.

    • @protorhinocerator142
      @protorhinocerator142 11 дней назад

Home made biscuits are the best. Like you said, they're cheap to make. You make a bowl of batter and bake the biscuits in the oven.
Butter on top, obviously. Cut them open sideways and watch that steam pour out. Then put some butter on the inside too. DO NOT use cold butter. Get some room temp butter and slap it on there. That's the way.
If you have any breakfast meat like sausage, ham, or bacon, you can put that inside. Fried egg and cheese are good too.
Or you can spread jam, jelly, or preserves inside. Maybe fresh fruit as well. I can't resist black berry preserves in a biscuit. That's just too good. Strawberry also. Do it.
Get creative and try a variety of things to eat inside a biscuit.
If you have some kind of thick stew get a biscuit to sop up the gravy at the bottom of the bowl. Biscuits are great for sopping. That's why so many Americans eat biscuits and gravy. It's a perfect match.
A biscuit done right is golden brown on the outside with just a little bit of crunch to it. The inside must be light and flaky. Not heavy and hard like a scone. It should almost melt in your mouth and magically disappear down your throat.
Flour, eggs, and a few other common ingredients and you could be eating biscuits today.
I'm sure there are videos for making the perfect biscuit.

Grits. Ah, grits. Okay, so take some corn kernels and put them in lye until the husk bursts and the kernels double or triple in size. You can eat it like that (usually canned) called hominy. Or, they then dry and grind it into....grits! Best grits are cooked in chicken stock and have almost equal amounts cheese as grits. Neither hominy nor grits have much flavor on their own. You need cheese and bacon if you want savory, or honey or syrup if you want to sweeten them. Very neutral flavor.

The reason it's important to get or make very good biscuits is the butter. The butter has to be the right temperature and has to be mixed in in the right way and with the right timing in order to get proper salty moist flakiness of southern American biscuits. The method and temperature have to be right in order for the fat and moisture in the butter to be properly distributed in the biscuit to create a crispy exterior and a moist, flaky interior. If it is done carelessly and the butter is all just mixed into a homogenous dough blob, they just taste like scones. Real, proper southern biscuits are so much better than scones.

Crisco or lard also works in biscuits. I don't do it because I'm in healthcare so I can't bring myself to eat pure lard at home, lol 😂 but my granny always used half lard half butter in her biscuits and they were the absolute best.

Not a traditional Southern breakfast but definitely looks good. More like a weekend brunch thing than an actual breakfast in my opinion. To me a traditional Southern breakfast plate would be 1 or 2 biscuits open face with sausage gravy, hash browns, bacon, a side of grits, and a plate of sliced tomatoes when they're in season. That's a farmers breakfast lol

For thousands of years, food has brought people of different cultures together. America has someone from everywhere and that contributes to how amazing the food is. You are more than welcome, my friend, to come here and try some. In most places if people know you're in America for the food, they'll have suggestions. Sometimes they'll even buy you dinner at "the best" restaurant. My favorite diner in any place in America is a place in Pueblo Colorado called The Black Swan. Chinese food and American food. Only place that has french fries, grilled cheese, tobasco sauce, fried rice, and they even did some things that weren't on the menu for me in the past. I haven't been there in years. Hard to get the time to go down there.

mimosas are common for 'brunch' when you (more commonly women) meet friends out around 10:30-11:00, usually on a weekend day (commonly Saturday). it's some kind of juice (usually orange juice) mixed 1:1 with sparkling wine of some kind (usually champagne). you CAN get drunk on them if you have too many, but if it's just 1, then you'll be fine.

Grits are kinda’ like polenta, but much coarser and need much more time to cook. I do 1 part grits to 5+ parts water, with the occasional splash of milk/cream, then butter, salt, WHITE pepper and - if available - a small Parm rind. Cook slowly, whisking often, for at least one hour. Amazing. Serve with anything, regardless of the time of day.

BTW, It's Not a lot of Butter. Americans eat butter like Cheese. And Unlike in Europe the Biggest American Meals are Breakfast and Dinner/Supper, with Lunch being the smallest meal. Americans usually bring lunch to work, and it can't be big because we can't take a 'Siesta'. We just go back to work after it. So an early breakfast 5AM to 8AM is shared with our families, and it fortifies us all for the day. And than a 6:00PM to 8:00PM Supper/Dinner is the evening meal that we also have with our Families, just to wrap up our day up together and to break-bread with our loved ones. Breakfast & Dinner are the times we discuss things, spend quality time with our children, tell stories, and share important lessons. Lunch in America is just eating.

The drink is a Mimosa....orange juice and champagne or proseco. Alcohol is not typical breakfast drink. But for a special occasion or for brunch ( brunch is typically a mix of breakfast and lunch foods and served between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Typical American breakfast is eggs, & bacon or ham or sausage or steak., toast or an English muffin and potatoes ( home fries or hash browns). But most people have both parents working so breakfast is usually on the go. Kids have cereal or pop tarts or an egg sandwich or a breakfast burrito....things that can get heated on toaster or micro and eaten on the go. I worked in a diner so people either left the house an jour early to get a sit down breakfast or grabbed a coffee to go and a fried egg bacon and cheese sandwich on a roll to go. Weekends are when most people sit down to a nice breakfast. Then there will be pancakrs , French toast or waffles, omelettes ,oatmeal grits. Of course we make and freeze everything so we can buy these things frozen and nuke them to rat on the go......fast food at home. Donuts and coffee are another quick grab.or bagels with cream cheese. Brunch is the best meal though because you can get some of everything and have a drink with it. FYI.....grits don't have much taste on their own. They need help with things like butter, salt and pepper, jam or cheese. Lots of people, me included will EST last nights supper.for breakfast, like cold pizza, spaghetti, pie, meatloaf etc. Whatever is in the fridge. 😂

Mix 2 cups self rising flour with 4 Tablespoons butter. Add enough buttermilk to make a very soft dough. Pat it out on a lightly floured surface to two inches thick. Cut into desired shapes ,place in buttered pan, and bake at 400 degrees F. for 12 to 15 minutes or til golden. Serve immediately! Enjoy!

As others here have said, grits is a ground corn porridge similar to polenta. In Italy, polenta is usually served with some sort of sauce or condiment. So is grits, even if it's only lots of butter. They are pretty flavorless by themselves.

Another adorable couple! I nearly fell over when the lady (Jessica I believe they said) started doing a little happy dance at the table because the food was good... My husband laughs at me all the time because I do something similar, accept I go full goofy with it and do what we have come to call my "happy toddler dance". This is not something I ever decided to do on purpose, it just come naturally to my silly self and it was so strange to see someone do something so similar! 😂
ETA: Ha! I posted too soon! He did a happy dance too! Now I need to eat there one day! lol

Oooh…they’re at the Loveless Cafe! It’s well known across the country for their amazing biscuits and breakfast. It’s not a chain, and it’s been around for a very long time. This is a lovely couple, you might want to check out their other videos, especially when the go to Italy to surprise his family. A mimosa is orange juice and champagne, Prosecco or another sparkling white wine. This would usually be a weekend breakfast, really more like a brunch. People who are going to do manual labor can usually eat a big breakfast, not probably not as big as this on a daily basis.

Grits gather the flavors of their surroundings. Butter, salt, and pepper a makes basic side dish. Shrimp and grits is fresh shrimp sauteed in butter (may add onions, peppers, garlic, and sausage) topped with the shrimp...grits are the main dish for brunch or dinner. My in-laws make grits with sugar and butter.

As others have said, this is not a typical everyday American breakfast. Be more for going out for brunch after church on Sunday. For everyday, I usually cook a slice of bacon or a pork sausage patty and two scrambled eggs with spinach, green onion and cheese for breakfast. Have it with a medium salsa on the side. Haha. American's love of Mexican/Southwest flavors (the salsa) has invaded breakfast and been common accompaniment now for decades.

We sometimes will do an alcoholic drink for breakfast. Mimosa or a Bloody Mary. Mimosa is champagne and orange juice. Bloody Mary is tomato juice and vodka with lime/lemon, celery, Worcestershire sauce/hot sauce, etc. Grits on the pulled pork is probably good because of the cheese and spice in the grits. Yes, grits are basically cornmeal mush, but plain is good, enhanced is better.

Grits are ground corn meal simmered and served many ways. It's somewhat similar to polenta but isn't quite as cooked down as polenta. Like pasta, rice or potatoes, grits are a good neutral base to pair with any addition you can think of.

Southern food seems very rich and comforting. There is no skimping on fats and carbs. I would think that amount of food for breakfast is a once in awhile thing.
We are in the northeast state of Vermont.
Oatmeal with fruit, fresh baked bread toasted with orange juice, eggs, pancakes with Vermont Maple Syrup only!
    Pastries and coffee…..Fresh Fruit.

Most memorably in Coronado near San Diego. If you haven't seen Coronado, it regularly rates among the best beaches on the planet.

Most people that don't like grits have eaten undercooked grits. Grits are supposed to be creamy not watery or you can still taste the actual grit. For Europeans it should the consistency of Polenta. No SUGAR, butter seasoning ( most people think only salt & pepper) and cheese

Where I come from people mix fruit juice 50/50 with Sprite.
"Hashbrown casserole" is a fairly vague description; compare "noodle casserole" or "rice casserole". We don't really know exactly what it is without more detail. From context, I assume it's a _breakfast_ casserole, so it probably has things like sausage and egg in it, but that still leaves a fair amount of room for variation. (In general, casseroles are for the Midwest and South what curries are for India. There are a LOT of different ones.)
Grits are a hot cereal made from ground corn, yes. In certain areas (mainly in the Deep South), grits are the most popular hot cereal; but nationwide they're probably the third most popular, behind oatmeal and Cream of Wheat, but probably ahead of Malt-O-Meal, I'd guess. Some people also use leftover rice as a hot cereal, warming it up with milk and flavorings (e.g., brown sugar).

The Loveless Café used to be in the middle of an old motel. The motel wrapped around the outside, and then the Cafe was in the middle. I hear that at some point it was renting “by the hour“ back in the day….now all that remains is the café. But they do make some really authentic and delicious southern food, most everything is served family style, like whole fried chicken on a platter. The lines can be long, as it is a very popular place.

The main flavors in Southern cooking are Butter, Salt & Pepper, which are all great things, but historically very difficult to obtain. Butter must be churned, so one must have purchased an expensive milk-cow. Salt needed to be mined from deep tunnels out of prehistoric sea beds, again expensive. And Pepper was imported from Indonesia, which took 6 months to get to Europe and cost more money than people usually had. A poor European surf living 900 years ago, would be flavoring their food with grass, berries, & fermentation. So we have it good.

Last I knew they were from Tennessee or something like that and considering a move to NYC. Also they travel a lot to Italy and France. Other than US places.
Edit: Correction this is when they went to Loveless cafe. You should check out their new one. The did and old fashioned food video recently. That is really good. Look for that.
You should check out 'Pasta Grammar' which is another Italian except she hates everything!! She is Italian and he is American. Her husband makes her eat nasty American food and forces her to eat it. It is a funny channel and light hearted channel.
