Broke the screen on my 55" Panasonic Plasma during a move. I was devastated. Picked the A80 as one of the finalists as a replacement. Informative Videos like these reaffirmed my decision to buy it. The A80K is out but the A80J is currently $400cdn less. What an incredible TV.

I went back and forth for a month deciding whether to get the C1, G1 or A80J. I decided that picture quality was by far the most important criteria for me. Everything else was a distant second. I wanted the best picture out of the box because I wasn't going to pay someone to calibrate my set. Despite being a heavy gamer who owns all the consoles, I decided to go with the A80J because of Sony's superior XR processor. I've had the TV for a few weeks now and I still get a big ass grin on my face every time I turn it own.
How has image retention been? Was a little let down to see, at least in his review, that it held it longer than the C1. Netflix and regular 1080p updscaling look really good? I’m coming from a TCL R635 in the living room and will be replacing a 2017 TCL P607 in the bedroom with possibly the A80J. Hoping to be a drastic difference in quality than even the R635. Will easily be better than the P607 but hoping to get that “this is what I’ve been missing” feeling from all content.
@@retrogiant3382 I notice it once in awhile but it's not very often. Depends on the circumstances. Definitely got that wow moment when upgrading and it hasn't left. Probably comparable to when I got my first lcd coming from crt. Also the upscaling is superb.
Great review. I have seen many in my research to find the right TV for a room that gets a fair amount of light. The A80CJ (Costco) leaves me amazed every time I see high definition, especially HDR, content. Thanks for the review with a tremendous amount of useful information.

I'm not much of a game player, but I went with the LG C1 due to it being VRR ready BEFORE release, the completely glossy screen and having 4 HDMI 2.1 ports. I have no complaints about the video quality of RUclips, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. I did make sure color temp was set to warm up 50.
My 2020 Sony A8H ethernet port recently stopped working after a bad storm. The wifi still worked though. I put in a warranty service repair and they ended up breaking the tv completely. Apparently every EU-based A80J reviews I’ve seen shows Sony for some reason use the old panel for A80J, however in other markets like US & China, A80J actually has the newer EVO panel with much higher HDR10 peak brightness (my D65 calibrated 77A80J can reach 780+ Nits on 5% window, 740+ Nits on 10% window and 170+ Nits full screen), personally I think 77A80J with conventional anti-glare coating is infinitely close to A90J while being the best large-sized premium OLED TV on the market in terms of price-performance ratio.

Hi ,I'm getting confused now with this TV,some reviewers are saying motion stutter is awful and this reviews says it's one of the best.im ready to buy and just want to ask people who have this TV.Thanks Vincent you are one of the best.
I have the 77 inch a80j and I feel the stutter when all motion interpolation features are off. I'm not sure what LG C1 is like but seems like they give the user more control over the level of interpolation. Sony only gives you 3 different settings under motion interpolation & black frame insertion. As I said, I haven't compared but I have a hard time finding a happy medium between Stutter & SOE on the A80J. Maybe Im just more sensitive to stutter.

Great summary of A 80J! Thanks. Despite all the progress, these high end TVs do not support the gigabit ethernet port. The ethernet speed (not the wi-fi speed) that these TVs support, is limited to 100Mbps only. Since the ethernet connection is more reliable and stable than the wi-fi connection, it is always preferable to stream 4k and above content through the ethernet connection. When do you think we will see TV manufacturers implementing gigabit ethernet ports?
I am happy to see that A80J has better near black handling as I can not tolerate the A8H's terrible near black artifacts and gamma. Once I saw the terrible near black performance of the A90J, I ordered C1 as a replacement. Good to see the A80J might be an option.
a80j 65" has non Evo version stronger pink vigneting starting from 4% and down to 1% near blacks as well apearing vertical banding lines quite few , I consider Evo panel versions better in near blacks vigneting & vertical banding, mostly truth is like that . I have 1 month a80j 65" all is clean fabulous just sometimes near blacks pink tint in left upper corner appear, regarding vertical bands its rare and visible split second on panning near black shot and also rarelly :) whites are clean and bright colours too no DSE so better I keep panel, that little stronger tint left upper corner in near blacks is unfortunate , I wish it to be at least 50% lesser, its not strongest but above mild appearance rarelly of course 😃 next year all panels will start to be EVO I think great for near blacks

I love your videos. Been watching for years. You made me dream of an OLED. I now have the A80J and it's a great display. The one thing I have a hard time deciding on is the peak luminance setting. Coming from Pioneer Elites and Sony HD CRTs, every setting but off seems kind of obnoxious to me. I can tell the display was meant to have it on though. Is there a reference to calibrate it with or is it something you just set by preference? Where did you set it during SDR calibration? I have the S&M UHD disc but I don't think there's any material to set peak luminance by. Any help would be appreciated greatly! Keep up the great work Vincent!

Thanks for your video, very informative. I just bought this TV "listed as brand new" on the weekend here in Toronto Canada. But I would like to ask somethings that I am confused about. First, after watching yours and other unboxing videos on You-tube I noticed that Sony TV boxes mostly had 2 nylon straps around the cardboard box that needed to be off. My TV box did not have these two nylon straps. Second, in the unboxing videos I watched including yours I noticed 2 cardboard releases at the bottom of the box that are designed to allow you to pull the box straight up and off the TV. My A80J box did not have these releases at the bottom of the box. I had to cut away the box and lift the TV itself out of the bottom of the box. Lastly, I noticed that in some videos there were two label stickers on the TV screen to peel off. My TV only had one sticker label, the yellow energy guide sticker. As you have likely figured out now, I am concerned that I got tricked into buying a refurbished TV. If this were true, it would be shocking as the retailer I bought this TV from has been in business for 65 years and has been an official certified Sony dealer for most of that time. My question is, since these TV's are built in different regions is it possible that my issues are simply a variation in packaging standards. The TV does look great and seems to work fine, but I would still feel cheated if I have been sold a refurbished TV rather than a new one. If you can shine any light on my issue that would be great. Thanks..........
Epic info and review as always. Purchased the A80J. Can someone tell me the definition of a hardcore gamer though? I game a fair bit, but what is a hardcore gamer that needs crazy low input lag?
It's a nonsense speaking of hardcore gamers in relation to tvs, as they will always choose a monitor for several reasons. That said, Sony tvs behave excellently with games and have the best picture quality bar none. You made an excellent choice.
Apparently people care less about the fact that 2021 Sony TVs cannot properly display HDR @120Hz, than they care about the fact that 2020 Sony TVs cannot properly display resolution @120Hz? Vincent is the only one shedding light on the limitations of the MediaTek 5895 SoC.
Sony XR uses a newer chip, the MT 9950, hence the proper 4k 120 right out of the box compared to x900h. This new chip is the same one used in the new 2021 8k Samsung which run 4k 120hz hdr vrr just fine. It's definitely not the chip that's the problem. Sony is just lazy.
@@QuackEasy - That's incorrect. Vincent demonstrates in numerous videos (including this video @08:20) that Sony is still using the inferior MT5895 chip. The Sony XR processor helps to achieve proper native resolution @120Hz, however due to the limitations of the MT5895, no HDMI 2.1 Sony TV to date can properly resolve HDR @4K120Hz.
Hi again Vincent. I'm in the group of people that doesn't like the matte coating on this TV (looking for 55"). How would you compare this TV and the G1?? For me G1 is even cheaper than a80j.
Soundbars vibrate a bit to make the sounds - so I guess it's stuffing a vibrating unit between the legs to give the most pleasurable outcome with the input source stimulating that area for maximum aural effect..
HI, thank you very much for the elaborative review. I noticed the comments about the 77inch model not having an antiglare finish on the screen. In store i was able to see the 65 and 55 inch models and both have it. But I need a bigger size (the 77inch) so if it doesn't have the same anti glare coating it will be a no go for me...
I'm looking for a 4k eye-friendly TV. Can you adjust the Sony A80J to be eye-friendly? I read that OLED TVs can get really bright, to the extent that it hurts your eyes.
Another awesome review and good to know that the A80J is a great alternative. It's curious that the A80J has better "out of black" gradation compared to the A90J?
Hello can someone help me with something please. 2 questions 1) Why setting HDMI range to limited instead of full makes the picture look sharper and overall better 2) Why you can turn HDR off and on both at Ps5 settings and the TV options as well? i find myself playing with both of them and i get various results . Should both be on? One off and one on? I dont get it
When you discussed the limitation of the MediaTech (sp?) chip and need to be in either 4k/120 or DV, is that something that might get fixed via firmware later?
Do you really need 120HZ with Dolby Vision will most games use it doubtful 2022 Bravia might support it but if they don't that sign it won't be used much.
Hi Vincent. I wanted to ask you about the 77 inch Sony A80J and A84J. The only picture difference between the two models is that the Rich Colour Enhancer feature being added to the A84J. I've heard that this feature only actually works in the Vivid picture mode (which I won't use). I wanted to ask you opinion as to which model is better or is the picture quality exactly the same on both?
I downloaded the manuals for both the a80j and a90j and was surprised that the 65" a80j can the stand be put in narrow mode (27.25" apart) but 65" a90j can't. I keep my TVs for a long time so to presently I plan to buy either the 65" Sony x95j or Samsung QN90A on Black Friday and not an OLED, not because of price but burn-in concerns. I am worried about my playing a lot of material with black bars either at the top and bottom or right and left and from what I have read online, this over time can cause the pixels on the sides to be brighter than those in the middle because they are turned on less. From the a80j manual pg 6: The following are examples of images that may cause image retention: • Content with black bars either on the top and bottom and/or the left and right sides of the screen. (for example, Letterboxed, 4:3 screen, Standard definition)................To reduce the risk of image retention: • Fill the screen by changing [Wide mode] to eliminate the black bars. Select [Wide mode] other than [Normal]. I am not going to distort the picture by watching material in wide mode. So I am looking to purchase a non OLED that has an ATSC 3.0 tuner. I have a minus infinity interest in gaming and in the real world, nothing is perfectly black.

Same here! Exactly why I chose it. Games look phenomenal on it
How has image retention been? Was a little let down to see, at least in his review, that it held it longer than the C1.
Netflix and regular 1080p updscaling look really good? I’m coming from a TCL R635 in the living room and will be replacing a 2017 TCL P607 in the bedroom with possibly the A80J. Hoping to be a drastic difference in quality than even the R635. Will easily be better than the P607 but hoping to get that “this is what I’ve been missing” feeling from all content.

"This feels like a middle year for Panasonic in the TV race. The lead in image quality they had in 2020 has become more or less eaten up. Of the two top-class TVs we have tested so far, we prefer the Sony A90J, with its smoother, nicer scaling and the best motion handling on the market. There is plenty of quality on those points here too, but not enough to maintain the leading position. The main news in JZ2000 is about quality of life improvements for users who just want a good TV without unnecessary fuss."
Just like the 77C1, all 77A80J have the latest, more efficient OLED panel from Guangzhou.
So does this mean the HDR peak brightness can reach LG G1 levels?

Great summary of A 80J! Thanks. Despite all the progress, these high end TVs do not support the gigabit ethernet port. The ethernet speed (not the wi-fi speed) that these TVs support, is limited to 100Mbps only. Since the ethernet connection is more reliable and stable than the wi-fi connection, it is always preferable to stream 4k and above content through the ethernet connection. When do you think we will see TV manufacturers implementing gigabit ethernet ports?
It was my impression that an adapted Ethernet/USB connection is the work around for that. It is an under $20 solution.
WiFi faster than Gigabit ethernet port now this TV and A90J use Wi-fi ax aka WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2
I got a usb Ethernet adapter. Averaging 300/300.

Great review I'm getting this TV

Hi Vincent. I wanted to ask you about the 77 inch Sony A80J and A84J. The only picture difference between the two models is that the Rich Colour Enhancer feature being added to the A84J. I've heard that this feature only actually works in the Vivid picture mode (which I won't use). From the a80j manual pg 6: The following are examples of images that
may cause image retention:
• Content with black bars either on the top and bottom
and/or the left and right sides of the screen. (for example,
Letterboxed, 4:3 screen, Standard definition)................To reduce the risk of image retention:
• Fill the screen by changing [Wide mode] to eliminate the
black bars. Select [Wide mode] other than [Normal].
I am not going to distort the picture by watching material in wide mode. So I am looking to purchase a non OLED that has an ATSC 3.0 tuner. I have a minus infinity interest in gaming and in the real world, nothing is perfectly black.
Great review thanks. So the A80J doesn’t have the new so called EVO panel like the A90J, in the US many reviews say it does? Is this going to be like the LG C1 where some have it and others don’t?
In the 77 inch it does I believe
@@swa99a10 Thanks hope that’s true as it’s the 77 inch I’m looking to buy
@@its1me1cal from what I understand seems like all the 77 inch a80j and c1 have them.
In another video in the comment section Vincent said it doesn't.
Hi Vincent. Would you mind reviewing the new Qled lineup from TCL? I believe it's the C728? I am interested in their 2.1 functionality. They say they work better than last years Sony so I would be happy if you could confirm that. Thank you :)
Hey.. Can you review TCL's C825 Mini LED Tv launching in India , its claiming to be IMAX enhanced. Thank you!!
Vincent, you need to get US sponsorships because you review basically the same products in the market here.
Brilliant review as always.
One request: more receiver and prepro reviews in the context of video handling, please. That is sorely lacking in the RUclips space.
The British Empire extended wide and far, although some of the terminologies do not translate into Texican :)
@HDTVTest Vincent, if you had to do this comparison by percentage, how much % would be X90J LED to the A80J OLED in image quality?
I'm trying to decide between the two, and I'm leaning towards the X90J because I will use it a lot with my computer and want to avoid image retention.
Thank you.
Literally says in the title.
@@xbone8950 X90J is a different model 🙄
Where is Sony’s VRR (on PS5 and A-series TVs)?
Just purchased from Curry's be aware there is 2 variants of it normal a80j and the a84j which adds Google assist button to turn off voice control and a colour enhancer and mayb the option to put you. speakers directly into the back.price was the same between the two but the aj84 is £50 more as we speak with £100 off so £1599.looking forward to getting it 👍

ISSUE RESOLVED: 100% on Sony A80J 77inch
In March Sony released a new TV update that allows the VRR on Sony A80J. Today I installed the TV update and reinstalled the latest Nvidia Drivers. As I expected this was never a driver issue. it was an issue with the Sony A80J software. My issues resolved themselves after the TV update. to get VRR enabled I had to reinstall the Nvidia driver.
Now Sony A80J has VRR enabled as does Asus Strix 3090 in Win10.
I am a happy man. the issue was screen smear and tear and flicker.
Vincent, in choosing a 4K player to go with the Sony A80/A90, I have heard that the Sony 4K players (x700, 800M/2) are “locked” in player led Dolby Vision and thus do not work well with the new A80/A90 which use TV led DV. Do you know if this is true ?
Assuming the Sonys are "locked", what 4K BR players wouldn't be? Panasonic UB9000 or UB820?
@@jmacd4027 The Panny’s use TV led (apparently they switch based on info from the TV?). The old oppo 203 you could choose between the two. I have 3 4K players , the two Sony’s and the Panasonic 820. I noticed that the Sony 800M/2 DV seemed darker vs the Panny 820 when used with my new 83A90J, which started me on this quest to find out why… so I’m trying to confirm what I have heard from various sources…
@@kojak99100 Thanks very much for your reply. I'm upgrading right now & I'll go with the Panasonics.
@@jmacd4027 The UB820 has more features than the Sony’s to help justify its higher price… plus it’s a safer bet for DV until we can get the real story on player vs TV led.
@@kojak99100 Thanks! Same as UB9000?
I bought a A80J, I love it... is there any way to add a small subwoofer and use the TV speakers? I cannot figure a way.
Isn’t the A80j different on the 77 inch? Would image retention be better on the 77 inch?
Does the semi gloss screen handle reflections better than the glossy one? From the video it looked like maybe it does when he showed the difference with the A90J 🤔
Yes
@@Habdabi 4 months later someone answers my question haha! I've had the a80j for a while and the semi gloss screen is excellent at handling reflections 👍🏻
When can we expect your calibration picture settings video for the A80J ?
I’m interested in purchasing this TV. I was wondering if I would need a separate streaming device or if the TV operating system itself handles that just fine? Thank you.
I have a 65" A9G that I got at a clearance price. I was thinking of trading it in for the Sony A80J 55", downsizing because of price. Can anyone tell me is the A80J really that much better than the A9G?
dont do that mate not worth it especially with downsizing:) maybe if You are watching a lot of sdr in daily conditions in bright room then A80j would be better tv but only if you watch mainly in such conditions
I don't think it's a good idea, keep the 65"
why would anyone downsize? if you cant keep the same size or go up in size its not worth it
Nah you're caught up in some fomo. Keep the A9G
Smaller size is a no Bueno
It's so frustrating choosing a tv nowadays, watching YT Reviews/Tests/Comparisons since march - there are sooo much people saying different stuff about the same tv models, it's crazy. I just went with a 77" a80j and hope i'll be satified :-/
And, are you satisfied? :D

@@Electrojudaz nice, then I ll buy it too. I dare you, if it sux! 😆😆😂😂 jk
@@derek4177 LoL! COME AT ME BRO!!
No it's really a nice tv, Menus are snappy, tv boots up really fast, the sound was a huge surprise, for beeing such a flat-ass tv, the bass is dryer than excepted plus the mid's are crisp, so are the high's. Picturequality for the price is just "wow". Only down coming from an lcd is that i have the brightness mostly on max. But otherwise Get it.
@@Electrojudaz lol yea i got a soundsystem anyway, but thanks for the infos.
Oh and yes i know about the brightness, thats just a general "OLED" thing, but I usually only watch in the evening anyway and it seems like the peak birghtness is just enough either way. :)
I already ordered it hehe
How do you not mention the peak and full-screen white window nits? In your other videos, you had a growing white window and ABL is one of the remaining weaknesses of OLED panels, so it makes extreme sense to include this metric.
10:13 “stuff your unit between the legs” 🤣
I had the chance to trade up to a 65" 09 from 08. I find the difference significant. Due to getting a killer deal from BB $2766. US. My 75 year old Mom in law was staying with me the weekend it got swapped out. She commented on how more vibrant it looked. I noticed it as soon as they fired it up.
I'm thinking about going to A90J in a 65' but the A80J in the 65' also looks great as well! I'm wondering if I if I won the panel lottery with A80J because this TV has an amazing picture in SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision. I think the A90J is most likely brighter, and has more depth along with detail in the picture. Does paying the extra $1200 justify the difference? I'm not sure.
@@avg0062 Ist got the 080 then went to 090 which is much better IMO. I lucked out Thx to the price drops on the 080. I got 1500 cad knocked off the original price on the 09.

was thinking of buying an A80J 65inch, how is it picture quality compared to Philips oled 806. i cant find any comparison videos on youtube.
You forgot about the G1, how does it compare to it?
I really want A90J and wondering when it will stop being sold at Best Buy? I cant afford it just yet. Will the price drop any further? Thank you!
I hate my Q8FN--which has been my sole TV for 3 years. After tormenting myself over this, the C1, and the x90j, I ordered this. Waiting for it Thursday. NO OLED (TV) experience so slightly worried I'll find it too dim.
What do you think? I’m in a similar position still rocking my Q7FN and looking at the A80J
@@martythecat5727 I like the A80J much better. It was a good--if costly--choice. I was worried it wouldn't be bright enough but it's actually fine. It just isn't INSANELY bright like the Q8FN. And the colors are perfect. They don't "pop" quite as much because they are much more realistic. No matter how I tried, I could never seem to dial out the slightly exaggerated colors of the Q8FN. So like if you're watching baseball or football the grass actually looks like real grass. On the Samsung it always had this slightly neon/kelly green look. I spent so much time playing with settings but on the Sony I've barely touched them. I mostly have it set to Standard and the out of the box Standard settings look perfect to me. Also the blacks are of course perfect being OLED.
@@BookClubDisaster that’s good to know. I think I’ll make the change soon. Glad to hear you just sit on standard, i always hear people changing the picture setting depending on what they are watching - I’ve always been a one rounded setting. Any chance you wall mounted? If so how far out is it? Also what size? I’m looking at the 65 and curious about the matte finish. Thanks for the reply.
@@martythecat5727 I have the 65 inch. I don't notice much difference between the matte finish and a glossy finish but I haven't done a side by side comparison. Also it's the first OLED TV I've owned so I can't comment on how reflective the non-matte models are. I have it on a stand so I can't help you with mounting. Sorry.

And compare with C1 and A80J
LG still the only OLED on market that can game at 120hz w/Dolby vision on?
Before winter 2021 there will be no upgrade for Sony.
Not properly LG has huge problems with HDMI 2.1 gaming features and fact Sony hasn't implement them shows want to get them right.
Pretty much. Sony has no incentive to offer it or a game mode in Dolby Vision for obvious reasons..
DV is gamechanger, even for games not mastered in the format.
Once DV mastered games start dropping its going to be ridiculous.

whats your opinion on semi gloss finish regarding picture quality?
Great video, I did buy a Samsung Q95t, but sent it back, the front came away from the back after one day, and it was way too bright on most things I watched, and sd content looked worse than the 10 year old led Toshiba I have at the monent. I was thinking about the A90j, but I have seen good reviews for the A80 j, considering the price difference, is it worth the extra over the already great A80 j ?
I am not into gaming at all, so those features are irrelevant.
Richer sounds, in the uk, give a 6 year warrenty with all their tv's
I went for the 65 inch A90J, no regrets, brilliant picture and sound to match.
A80J vs LG C1 please!
the internal disney plus app of the sony a80j shows only 5.1 Audio output, but no dolby atmos. Why does the App not support atmos ? Is there a solution?

Vincent, what do you think about the picture quality of this model in comparison with Panasonic HZ 1000?
How big of an issue is the aggressive and none customizable asbl ? I have heard both that it's a deal breaker and that it's not noticeable. What is your opinion?
Wondering when VRR is coming. Sony needs to get there act together.
I have my eye on the x90j. Not a OLED. But seems good for the price i want to spend without the burn in problem. I only hope they manage to put gsync/free sync in there also if they can for the x90j. Not advertised in coming thou. only a wish. Also a fix for the artifacts.
I wonder the reason not putting the new HDMI 2.1 standered for all the ports. Likewise for receivers. It's backwards capable. Do they have a stock wile of the HDMI 2.0 or something to stiff us like that.
I am Just waiting to the end of the year for the update. Then decide.
Sony claims that will be in wi ter 2021, however in 2020 the claimed the same to thoe 2020s line... still no upgrade.
