Let me have it! Am I nuts? Do I need more coffee? (the answer is always yes). Anyone feeling curious about TCL’s 8K 6 Series? Hit me up before I jump into the studio to record another video!
When will we see a review of the LG QNED TVs? Will the 8k (99 Series) be necessary or will the 4K with older processor be good enough? I have a plasma tv with burn-in, so I’m weary of OLED. Or can I pull the trigger on the Sony A80J and not worry?
@@kylemaroun6903 I was worried about burn in too… nevertheless I tried my first OLED about 2 years ago (65A8G). No burn in or image retention issues at all. (I don’t game on it). So that gave me the confidence to get the A90J. I think this generation of OLED’s is much less susceptible to burn in than the early generations were.
Totally agree about the OLED brightness complaints being overblown. My Sony is plenty bright and I found the deep blacks and better overall picture quality to be the deciding factor over an LED.
..for every other situation you need to "move" or extend that 203 margin further into higher luminance.. so that you still can perceive what is happening (just like when you are listening to music in the car in a noisy environment).. but.. What happens when you watch 980nit content with a 750nit panel?
..well it gets worse the nit count which was already lacking in the begining is going to get worse due to degradation every single year we are using it.. at some point we are going to be watching a 450nit panel trying to show detail from 1000 or 4000 nit content.
I bought my A80J 65" a month ago and I'm in love with the picture quality and features of that TV. Paired with my Sony 7.2 a/v system is like having a movie theater at home. A90J might be "better" but its price is too much, at least for me. Once you have the A80J at home you will be amazed and will not miss the A90J at all. And let me tell you this, in real live A80J is so bright that sometimes it is hard to look at the screen when there is too much white on the scene. So I don't know why someone would want anything brighter than that, unless you're used to watch TV with sunglasses on. Also don't judge it by the quality of the image coming from your cable box or Internet tv provider. It will be 1080p at best but even with that it looks fantastic. Try watching 4k HDR or even 8K from RUclips and other sources and that is where this TV really shines.
See this is how i feel too, i don’t know why people say they are dim, either they aren’t using the right settings or they just like really really bright pictures. I’m used to a more Natural look where i don’t need to squint my eyes in bright scenes
@@dcdread5983 I cut the cable but with RUclips TV and other internet sources it does great. Also this TV has an automatic function that enhance the image quality if the resolution is not optimal. I don't have any complains
That's the shame of it - cable has terrible picture quality and it's where most of us still watch most of the content... It's 1080i at best but the bit rate makes it closer to 480p and 720p... Also set your cable box to 1080i, not 1080p. You don't want the cable box doing any upscaling - you want your TV to do ALL the upscaling.
I bought the 65A80J a few weeks ago and I love it. Upgraded from a 50 inch HD Vizio M-Series. Man I couldn’t be more pleased. Finally enjoying 4K and HDR. I’m binging old shows and dusting off old Blu-rays. And I’m with you Caleb couldn’t justify right now shelling out $4000+ to enjoy greater brightness. These TVs shine not only in contrast but those specular highlights even in SDR. That processor just makes shiny things pop along with doing a hell of a job handling low quality stuff. And though not an A90J the A80J is plenty bright. And as far as audio quality I use my home theater system anyways. I’m happy with my purchase. Thanks for the comparison and sensible analysis. Hope you hit those million subscribers.
I performed the side by side comparison myself in the store a month ago and couldn’t see enough difference to justify the additional price. We went with the A80J and as it was already on sale I got a 77” for less than the price of an A90J 55”. My wife is very happy with the selection - my biggest success metric. Your review was right on. Good work!
You must have been looking at the wrong tv or not looking hard enough . Even me with my bad eye sight can easily see the huge difference between the two .
@@evegtrrz28 Obviously you bought the A90J so you need to keep telling yourself that. I compared the two & then bought the A80J & everybody who has seen it so far has been blown away by the image quality. Could I afford the 90 ?? Yes, I could easily in fact but the almost $2000.00 increase in price seemed like a ridiculous waste of $ to me........
Wow, we went also with the A80J 65". But I don't know if this two models integrate the Bravia Core Channel. ¿Have you been able to configure this streaming service on yours?. Thnx
This is it. I'm buying an A80J. I've had a PS5 since launch and was waiting for the right 4K/120 Sony TV to replace my 1080p/120 Bravia from ten years ago. Thank you for the video. UPDATE: I got one and I love it!
Awesome video! I’m still rocking my 60” plasma (2013 Panasonic TC-P60ST60.) The panel currently has 14,550 trouble free hours on it, and still looks stunning when viewing high-quality content. The only problem has been that the optical audio out port broke (literally crumbled) over a year ago so I can’t use the soundbar any longer. I am seriously considering upgrading this Fall to the Sony A80J 65” OLED. From all I’ve read, if you love the look of plasma then OLED is the only thing you’ll be happy with.
Bought the A80J 77" 8 weeks ago. LOVE IT. My only advice is to hardwired the internet instead of using wi-fi, why? Sony also includes Bravia subscription, which streams IMAX Ultra 4k Atmos between 50mbps-100mbps. HBOMAX and Netflix also offered 4k Ultra Dolby Atmos, but a bit compressed, still you want the fastest speed for the best Ultra 4k quality. I tried using the wifi feature and Netflix, HBOMAX, and BRAVIA TV suffered from buffering when streaming Ultra 4k and picture quality changes from 4k to 1080 depending how busy your wireless wifi is working.
I have a 77" A80J in the living room, 65" A90J in the bedroom. They are virtually the same TV to me. When I first got the A90J and set it up side by side, I could notice a HDR brightness difference. But now in daily use in different rooms, I can hardly tell the minute differences.
Hey Caleb! First off, thank you for what you do, I love watching your content and you definitely help the decision-making process. You did ask once for suggestions about what we'd like to see, and maybe it's just me but I think it'd be beneficial to actually mention prices at the time of making your videos. Like in this instance it would've been useful to compare both prices of these TVs. That's just one man's humble opinion. Keep doing what you're doing!
I bought the A80J and it’s the best tv I’ve ever bought and I agree completely with your evaluation of the 2. My only regret is not saving enough to buy the larger tv but I couldn’t wait my previous tv was blown out by a power surge so we are budgeting now for the larger next time. Thank you for all your insight and opinions.
Bought the A80J65 the first week it began shipping. I upgraded from a 2016 Samsung LCD. A80J has been fantastic. My TV sits on a stand that is only 40 inches in width so the A80J's flexible stand settings were a big consideration. I use the default Cinema settings with the Netflix setting for HDR. The image is stunning. Also, very happy that Sony went with Google TV for the interface. Other companies with proprietary UI will have to adopt this at some point. The Sony A80J currently is the number one TV in this product category when considering Picture, Features, and Price.
I have both. The A90 is brighter and gives a sense of more depth. But the A80J is still bright enough and brings out more detail by not over brightening the images. Winner...A80J hands down.
I bought the Sony A90J 65" for $2.2k new at Best Buy this weekend. Excited to finally use it once it's delivered in a few days. Only $200 more than the Sony A80K 65" and Samsung S95B 65".
I think your reviews of these TVs are spot on. The picture quality is undeniable. I bought a 65 in A80J I think this best picture quality I've seen on any TV. For a TV the sound quality is great, no more turning the sound up and down hear the dialog. Sure you can spend the extra money on the A90J. But for the average viewer the A80J is a better bargain for a great visual impact.
Had the A90J just returned for the A80J to save some money, yes it's a bit brighter but that's it and I think the A80J is better built kind of odd but true and the motion I thought was better on the A80J. it's a no brainer for me having owned both the A80J is the right choice to make!
I was debating between the 65” A90J and the 77” A80J and I opted for the 77” A80J and I couldn’t be happier. I have an external sound system so any audio is irrelevant to me. The maximum amount of brightness possible from a TV also isn’t too important to me as I prefer a more natural calibrated look that doesn’t get brighter than the sun haha! The A80J checked all the boxes for me. I was also able to get it for under $3,100 “out the door” so that was awesome too.
I was having the same debate but decided on the 77” A80J as well. Would you happen to know how the tv does with live sports from a cable source? I may pull the trigger before football season.
@@dcdread5983 I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with it if you get it. I specially bought it at this time (before Black Friday) to be ready for the football season! I have only watched one NBA Finals game so far and it looked pretty good. Honestly, I did feel like the players looked a little sharper on my 13 year old 50” Samsung plasma, but it really is the signal being pushed to the TV. This was before I calibrated it. I have it all dialed in for cable at this time and I’ll let you know how it looks after watching the game tonight!
Bought the A80J. I looked at them both. You can see the difference in some content. If they weren't side by side, I would not have noticed it. I really can't say the viewing experience justifies the way higher price.
Great video! I know you did the A90j vs the C1, but I’d really love to see a comparison between the Sony A80j vs LG G1 as these two TV’s seem fairly similar with closely matching price tags (unlike the A90 vs A80). Thanks!!
Great videos & channel. I am actually in the market for a new OLED tv and this video was very helpful! I did have a tech question for you however. I am running a Panasonic DP UB820-k 4k player and an Apple TV 4K through my Sony 3.1 HT-Z9F sound bar using the eARC. I use Rocketfish 8k ultra high speed DMI cables. Is this the best way to achieve the best sound and picture quality? Or should I be running the cables directly to the tv from the video sources? thank you in advance
These days it is virtually impossible to buy a "bad" tv. However, I bought the 83 A90J anyway. I am not wealthy, however, I have a good job and I save money when I can. Home theater is a very important quality of life issue to me and I could not resist an OLED at this size and this price. Just a few years ago, a 77 inch OLED was over $25K. Also, my local brick and mortar A/V shop treats me very well and always gives me an extremely fair trade in value on the last TV I bought from them.
@@jaedin716sw So sorry Jaedin716sw - just saw this. Very happy with my 83 A90J. It was a bit quirky the first year, but always remedied by a restart. It's basically flawless now. My one complaint is how it handles Dolby Vision from blu ray discs - I always end up switching my OPPO 203 HD Blu Ray player to HDR as it looks superior every time. No issue with Dolby Vision from all the streaming services - just on Blu Ray discs. Again, sorry for the delay in responding to you!
Hi Celeb, Great comparison as always! As I mentioned in one of your old reviews of Sony A9G, I've got the A9G 77 inch and I'm very happy with it. Yes, I do like the new adjustable stand of A9J but quality wise I believe they are very similar when you don't take the brighter panel into consideration. For that, I have the LG G1 Oled and I'm okay with having different TVs as they all have something unique to offer. Thank you once again and I can honestly tell you, you are offering very valuable information for those that are about to make a purchase of a new TV set sitting on the fence about what they should do and I really appreciate that. And I'm sure a lot of folks would have agreed with me. Keep up the great job, Celeb!
Considering I'm still rocking a Sharp Aquos LC-40D78UN which debuted in 2010 that I probably bought in 2011 or 2012 and mostly pleased with it, I think the 65" A80J will be good enough.
I agree! I work in an electronic store, and see these side by side. I love the A90J. With the price though I would buy the A80J. They are both excellent TV’s!
Same. You'll LOVE IT! Heatsink is peace of mind for me. Game hours on it and watch live sports and not one inkling of image retention. Heatsinks work so good I think it should be a standard on every oled made.
Do either of you have it mounted on the wall? Or do you have your respective TVs on stands? If mounted, did you use the mount provided (if it comes with the tv) or did you go and buy another one?
@@icycannonball I bought a entertainment center from Wayfair for my A90J and waited on it and put it together and then a week later went and got the A90J because I specifically wanted that low profile stance it has I LOVE THAT LOOK!
@@icycannonball I'm having it mounted above my fireplace, replacing my Vizio P75-c1. You have to buy a wall mount if you aren't going to use the provided stand.
My old Sony (KDL-55W90A), which lasted me 13 years (served me well). Have now brought the A90J 65 inch. Wow, how 13 years have changed TV production. Loving the OLED, sound, and ease of use. Very happy with my purchase. Hopefully this will last me the next 10 years also.
I mean all previous master series oled tvs offered nothing extra besides better color accuracy and a tiny bit of sound and was still the same price gap and cost more at release then even the a90j does the a90j is brighter has better accuracy out of the box better sound comes with a heatsink has 32gb of storage instead of 16gb like the a80j I mean imo all warrants the extra price people only look at what they want to all of these things cost money the heatsink alone is a chunk of change and it clearly works well as it dispurses short term inage retention faster then any oled out as of now
@@reviewforthetube6485 bro. Sit and wand compare the two tvs side by side. You can't tell the difference. For 1200 extra? Ill pass. Guarantee you cannot tell them apart
@@youngjedi9199 you can absolutely see the difference. Go watch b the installers video for hdr. Yes most of the time they are similair. But people who want a lambo don't go ahhh well it's only a bit better so I won't get it. If you want the best you get rhe a90j of not get the a80j as it's a very close second. Yes thwy are very similair. But the extra money for a heatsink to ourther help image retention and allow for those smaller highlights to be even more booster is nice. The full screen brightness is a bit better. The color saturation is a bit higher as Vincent pointed out from HDTV test. The sound is a bit better. You don't have the coating ob the front of the screen. You also grt better calibrations from factory. And has 32gb instead of 16gb and comes with the new controller. Yes I know you can buy the controller if you want lol. Imo that's all worth it. It's alot better then it used to be between the lower model and there master series. The a8g vs the a9g the a9g only had calibrations and sound. At least this time there is more on the table.
@@reviewforthetube6485 I sat at a best buy for two days before making my decision. One day the sony rep was there and he was super knowledgeable. Certain times we both forgot which tv was which. They are both magnificent. If you want a do it all tv you go with Sony. If you want a gamers Masterpiece you go LG. Even the the rep at Sony said so. He indicated the same small details but honestly it isn't worth it in my opinion. For your car analogy it's like this, I have a Porsche 911 turbo with the A80J but I can get a couple more bells and whistles with a package upgrade. Overall I'll pass. I don't want a Porsche for it's interior. I want it for the turbo and gearbox. If you want me to fork up another 50 percent it's gotta be spec'd to do so. Sound doesn't matter to me. If you buy a tv of this caliber you should have an adequate sound system.
@@youngjedi9199 please don't bring up judging a tv in best buy when in display mode as we call it torch mode lol your an average consumer saying there is no difference based of a setting on 2 Sony tvs meant for display lol
I watched them side by side at the store and couldn’t get myself to justify the price difference for the A90J. The A80J looked just as great so I went with it.
I couldn't decide, so I bought them both. The a90j for my bedroom and the a80j for the living room. Fortunately they were both on sale! I love them both
The center channel on A80J can be use for the new Home Cinema products from Sony. Like HT A-7000 and HT-A9. Combining these with OLED picture quality is fantastic.
Thanks Caleb. I purchased the A80J after following your other videos , then this one made up my mind totally. Thank you so much for your in depth analysis and reviews. Always look forward to them. By the way , what is the steam punk looking movie that you played during the comparison? Gotta have it. Thanks a lot
I got the 65" A08 with the extended warranty credit at BB when my XBRA1E could not be completely repaired. Due to getting a killer deal ($850 CAD diff added including extended warranty & taxes) I exchanged for the 09. There is no comparison IMO. As soon as they turned on the 09 I can see the quality difference. I play files right from an SSD drive. Having said that some shows looked better on the 08. Still I am very happy with my decision overall.
I got the a80j, it replaced my x950h and I love it. The odd thing though, even in hdr, it looks the same for daytime. At night, I love that I don't have the halo effect of the qled on loading screens. My room gets bright in the day but not overly bright so the OLED still stands out (it actually gets brighter than the Hisense I had)
@@whitecrowuk575 the gaming features of the LG are obviously incredible (VRR mainly) but the A80j is a sharper, better, more natural image that doesn't crush blacks (Lg seems fuzzy watching the same show in the other room) and the Sound on the a80j is so incredible its night and day. you barely need to consider a soundbar. the lg c1 sounds thin even at high volumes.
Why did you return the qn90a??I bought the A80j and I regret it, it’s so fucking dim, I wall mount it and everything, I’m debating on returning it for the an90a, but that’s gonna be a big drag to do all that, now I know what I like I prefer bright image and color than perfect blacks.
I just bought the A80J (65”) at £2300. I looked at the A90J (65”) at £3500, but really couldn’t justify the difference in price. Not when 8K is on the horizon. I felt I might as well keep that money and put it towards a new 8K TV when there are more options on the market. 1000nits would have been nice. I’m not so bothered about the central sound channel, as I use B&W speakers which are nothing like Sony voicing.
Can you make a comparison between the X90j and the A80j? I have the x90j but im still in the return window. Not sure if the A80J is $700 better then the X90j
@Caleb Denison Hey Caleb great videos and great new post covid look! I am hoping you can answer this - the smaller versions of the a80j have a matte finish but the 77 inch has a glossy finish. Is that the same glossy finish as the 83 inch a90j - and the reason I ask is because the 83 inch a90j seems to handle reflections really well suggesting that perhaps something extra was added but I have no idea. Similarly no one seems to know if it is the same with the 77 inch a80j. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the video. I’ve always had the opinion that the tv really doesn’t matter when you don’t have another one to compare it to. I’m sure if I had a C1 or A80j in one room an a90j in the next I’d wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
The A90J is much better TV than the A80J. The A80J is a great TV for the money because it gives you a great picture especially in 4K viewing. However, the A90J takes you to the next level because of the EVO panel which is brighter than A80J.
Excellent job as always Caleb! I absolutely love the A80J at 77" however if you can swing it and really want the extra few percent of performance and peak brightness of the A90J I feel it's worth it but more importantly it's nice to have the option this year to choose. Hope all is well my friend
Hey love the videos. I'm looking to get a new TV in the next few months. Leaning Sony as I've got a ps5 and i know that certain features unlock on bravia TVs. 55" is the size of choice(pause). In the UK, A80J can be had for £980ish, no A90J or K here, while an LG G2 55" is around£1299. While upper end A95K is £2199. Aside from price which of these three do you recommend? Will the A95K go down in price one A95L is out?
Nice TV. OLED probably is the future. Sony will have to develop the next big thing in panel technology. To me Sony still feels special. I can't afford to buy them all but I can partake in rampant consumerism by watching product reviews like this one. Thanks for the heads up! Thumps up!
hello, congratulations for your channel, but you help a lot with your advice, I would like to ask you which of the two models is better Sony A80L OLED vs Sony A90J OLED
Hahaha loved the “burn in” whisper section! Keep up the great work, another top quality video 👍 You summed up a lot of really hard topics into easily digestible moments that truly make you step back and think about what tv is best for me. Incredible!
I got the A80J because wall mounted wasn't an option and the stand is too narrow. So weird the A90J didn't accomodate for smaller stands considering it's heavy price tag.
Thanks for your video, very informative. I just bought this TV "listed as brand new" on the weekend here in Toronto Canada. But I would like to ask somethings that I am confused about. First, after watching yours and other unboxing videos on You-tube I noticed that Sony TV boxes mostly had 2 nylon straps around the cardboard box that needed to be off. My TV box did not have these two nylon straps. Second, in the unboxing videos I watched including yours I noticed 2 cardboard releases at the bottom of the box that are designed to allow you to pull the box straight up and off the TV. My A80J box did not have these releases at the bottom of the box. I had to cut away the box and lift the TV itself out of the bottom of the box. Lastly, I noticed that in some videos there were two label stickers on the TV screen to peel off. My TV only had one sticker label, the yellow energy guide sticker. As you have likely figured out now, I am concerned that I got tricked into buying a refurbished TV. If this were true, it would be shocking as the retailer I bought this TV from has been in business for 65 years and has been an official certified Sony dealer for most of that time. My question is, since these TV's are built in different regions is it possible that my issues are simply a variation in packaging standards. The TV does look great and seems to work fine, but I would still feel cheated if I have been sold a refurbished TV rather than a new one. If you can shine any light on my issue that would be great. Thanks..........
In my mind, and having viewed both extensively, I'm convinced that the REAL difference between the two "sets" is the 83" vs. 77" difference, that the A80J can's match. For that reason. and that reason only, I purchased the larger A90J. With regard to picture quality, in and of itself, the A80J is a far better value, in my opinion !!
Thx for this comparison Caleb! I have been thinking about getting the A80J and your reviews have helped a lot! Keep up the great 👍 work on this channel. ☀️
@@teknerd yes I live in ATSC3.0 heaven in the DFW area. But I don't have a HDR TV yet! As more programing opens up, it shall be time to buy. It wasn't prudent in the past.
@caleb did you notice the a80j having a bit more dimensionality than the a90j in certain situations. I've seen the two compared in other videos and that certainty seemed to be the case
While I am not "Mr. Deep Pockets," I am very much leaning towards getting the A90J. It's not because I just have that much money, but because I tend to buy the best and make it last. I'll be replacing a 55" Sony XBR-HX929 that I bought as soon as it released way back in 2011. I also plan to wait until November and watch prices like a hawk to get it cheaper, assuming past model year price drops around that time prove to be an example of what happens this year. I feel I can justify the extra (but sale priced) cost of the A90J if I'm going to get the next 10 years out of it. (Frankly, I still love my HX929, but I've been pining away for an OLED TV since 2001, literally.) Also, I do love the idea of using the TV as my center speaker, especially with the positive things I've heard about how well it directs the audio from the appropriate place in the scene. I just need to figure out what to do with my current center channel speaker.
I had planned to get A80J, glad to see you agree. My concern was mainly heat, I have heard the A90J gets significantly hotter, you can heat your room with it! I do with the A80J had the center channel input, but I probably wouldn't use it anyway since I have a dedicated system.
I bought the Sony A80J in a 65 inch for $1799 and the picture quality is amazing! I thought about purchasing the A90J but I couldn't justify an extra $1000 for HDR brightest. A80J is a great TV ! Motion can be a bit of a concern, I turned of the cinema motion, and set motionflow to custom, and clearness to 1 and smoothness to max because I watch a lot cable TV. However, if one likes to watch 4k's and Blu-Rays the cinema motion should be set to high. One thing about motion is suppose to be smooth. These settings are my experience and I think just make the motion tolerable.
I was leaning towards the A80J because the A90J was too bright at times. I was surprised when you mentioned this. Guess i will be buying an A80J when Black Friday comes around. Thanks Caleb.
I agree with you on the A80J and the price difference relative to the available sizes of the two models, I would get the A90J 83” but Sony priced themselves out of what I would spend on a dang television lol, great review. I know it’s great because I spent an hour in Best Buy staring at them side by side 😂
Love the vid. I just bought the Samsung QN90A but not impressed with watching cable tv or even Netflix! Tried to play with settings but like you HATE! Soap opera effect. Is the Sony A80J better for streaming and cable tv watching?
I’ve been looking at both of these sets, and although I’m certainly leaning towards the 80J to save some dollars, I heard that the 80 is more light reflective then the 90. In the living room, screen reflectivity can be a problem at various times in the day. Could Caleb or any others weigh in on whether this is an issue to consider?
I bought the 77A80j I'm zero complaints other than having to manually switch audio output from tv to sound system to get surround sound over the optical output. & Wishing my wife watched less cable tv on it. Simply put: Sony hit it out of the park with these oldes.
Need new tv's to furnish a house we just bought and went with an 77 A80J based largely on your recommendation, you’re my favorite of the AV guys on RUclips. Keep up the good work!
A80J all the way. unless you've got loads of cash to throw on 5% increase in performance. also, hurry up with the X90J re-review Caleb! 😭 better yet, X90J vs X950H too. ;p
Love your reviews Caleb! Thank you! Based on your reviews (and a host of other review sites that are not as interesting or.concise as you 😀) I am waiting for delivery of my 65" A80j - I bought it because I loved the idea of the speakers in the screen but I am wondering about the need for a soundbar. Again, based on your reviews I bought a SonosBeam 2 but it would not work with my 2016 Samsung (kept losing the connection because the proprietary Samsung software kept overriding the sonos)so I had to return it. I bought the soundbar because I want clearer dialog and more punch but it didn't seem to make as much difference as I had hoped...does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I would love to see DT do more smaller screen size TV reviews. I need to replace a terrible 49” TCL Roku TV and there are so few small screen (less than 55”) reviews out there. I know big screens are super popular but smaller sizes are much harder to find quality information and reviews on.
I tried the U8G and did not like its motion and processing. It also had a bad HDMI port so I returned it for the A80J and it just amazing. Also my A80J is really bright. To be honest my perceived brightness is not really different than the U8G and it makes cable and all SDR look almost native. It is amazing,
Let me have it! Am I nuts? Do I need more coffee? (the answer is always yes). Anyone feeling curious about TCL’s 8K 6 Series? Hit me up before I jump into the studio to record another video!
Where is OD-Zero ??? Would love to see TCL vs Samsung for king of mini LED.
I think you nailed it.
@@kojak99100 OD-Zero is probably end of year, if it shows up at all. Everything is late, lately. And more expensive.
I wanted a brighter OLED and got the A90J . The best looking tv I have ever seen. Everyday I'm impressed!
Totally agree about the OLED brightness complaints being overblown. My Sony is plenty bright and I found the deep blacks and better overall picture quality to be the deciding factor over an LED.
Yeah it's just a marketing trick. And also a lot of RUclips presenters push the idea you need brighter. My a90j is more than bright enough 🙏
..for every other situation you need to "move" or extend that 203 margin further into higher luminance.. so that you still can perceive what is happening (just like when you are listening to music in the car in a noisy environment)..
Would you happen to know how the tv does with live sports from a cable source? I may pull the trigger before football season.
See this is how i feel too, i don’t know why people say they are dim, either they aren’t using the right settings or they just like really really bright pictures. I’m used to a more
Natural look where i don’t need to squint my eyes in bright scenes
@@dcdread5983 I cut the cable but with RUclips TV and other internet sources it does great. Also this TV has an automatic function that enhance the image quality if the resolution is not optimal. I don't have any complains
@@AbrahamLaria Sounds good...I appreciate your honest feedback bro!
Good work!

Yo Caleb excellent comparison!
Thanks, man! We need to get our live stream on soon!
Would you happen to know how the 77” A80J does with live sports from a cable source? I may pull the trigger before football season.

You forgot about the anti-reflective coating on the A90J XR👌
Surely the A80J will last you for years?
Bought the A80J65 the first week it began shipping. I upgraded from a 2016 Samsung LCD. A80J has been fantastic. My TV sits on a stand that is only 40 inches in width so the A80J's flexible stand settings were a big consideration. I use the default Cinema settings with the Netflix setting for HDR. The image is stunning. Also, very happy that Sony went with Google TV for the interface. Other companies with proprietary UI will have to adopt this at some point. The Sony A80J currently is the number one TV in this product category when considering Picture, Features, and Price.
Also planning to upgrade from my 2016 Samsung tv ! Wonder if I should wait a little more :)
I have both. The A90 is brighter and gives a sense of more depth. But the A80J is still bright enough and brings out more detail by not over brightening the images. Winner...A80J hands down.
Interesting point.
As usual mate, I agree with your assessment. For the vast majority of people the A80J is the best choice.
Cheers

And in europe that size you can get for just 5600 usd. Almost two times more expensive...maybe on european models parts are made of pure gold :)

Hahaha loved the “burn in” whisper section! Keep up the great work, another top quality video 👍 You summed up a lot of really hard topics into easily digestible moments that truly make you step back and think about what tv is best for me. Incredible!
And what about the burn in issue???
A90J owner here, agree with the review, the A80J makes the most sense
Brother. Now, I’m completely confused.
I went with the A80J 77". As beautiful as the A90J was, it just wasn't worth twice as much to me. I'm loving my A80J wall mounted.
This video was awesome by the way, I love the “which tv you should buy” section. That was a very detailed opinion.
Should I upgrade my a9g to this new a90j? Could you compare this two TV, please:)
I thought you were going to talk about Burn In. Maybe I missed it. Was there something to mention about that with either of the models ?
My Question is 77 or 83 inch if you are sitting almost 5 meter away from it? Is 83 inch worth the higher price? Thank you!
In my mind, and having viewed both extensively, I'm convinced that the REAL difference between the two "sets" is the 83" vs. 77" difference, that the A80J can's match. For that reason. and that reason only, I purchased the larger A90J. With regard to picture quality, in and of itself, the A80J is a far better value, in my opinion !!
the real difference is actually the heat sink which allows the A90J to have much less image retention and it allows it to have a longer lifespan..
Thx for this comparison Caleb! I have been thinking about getting the A80J and your reviews have helped a lot! Keep up the great 👍 work on this channel. ☀️
He came to the same conclusion that I did. I just watched this video on my 65" A80J.
Wow, this is the most honest TV review of side by side comparisons ever.
Do they look the same for watching live sports, since 99% of sports broadcasts are in SDR?
@@teknerd the big pro basketball game was broadcast on HDR the other night.
@@teknerd yes I live in ATSC3.0 heaven in the DFW area. But I don't have a HDR TV yet! As more programing opens up, it shall be time to buy. It wasn't prudent in the past.
Trying to decide between these two. Thanks for comparing
(Frankly, I still love my HX929, but I've been pining away for an OLED TV since 2001, literally.)
Also, I do love the idea of using the TV as my center speaker, especially with the positive things I've heard about how well it directs the audio from the appropriate place in the scene. I just need to figure out what to do with my current center channel speaker.
A80j is a great oled TV at great price.
Yes trying to decide on the two TVs or g1 what’s your take?
WELL HOPEFULLY YOU GOT THE PREMIUM OLED A90J AND NOT THE LOW BUDGET LOW BRIGHTNESS G1....
Difference is $100 as of 10/11/22 @ Best Buy.
Could Caleb or any others weigh in on whether this is an issue to consider?
just to be clear ur saying u heard that 80 is better at handling light in a bright room than the 90 ?
No, I heard that the 80 was more reflective than the 90, i.e. the 80 is worse than the 90 in that respect…
@@chriskangis6683 sorry didnt know u responded, would u say the 90 is on par with most leds in a bright room
I've ordered the A80J right before watching this video, those comparisons are telling me that I made a great choice, thanks for the content !
SONY has really brought the 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 this year with their TVs
Yeah bank accounts of their customers just burn 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I bought the 77A80j I'm zero complaints other than having to manually switch audio output from tv to sound system to get surround sound over the optical output. & Wishing my wife watched less cable tv on it. Simply put: Sony hit it out of the park with these oldes.
It will be perfect if Sony releases a 83" A80j!!
THIS!
Or a 77"" A90J
I really want A90J and wondering when it will stop being sold at Best Buy? I cant afford it just yet. Will the price drop any further? Thank you!
Great video! Most importantly………how the hell have you lost so much weight?!
😭 better yet, X90J vs X950H too. ;p
Yes RE-review!
First class video - A80J is definitely the smart choice
Take it from someone who bought the A80j, the Samsung qn90a is the best chest A80j is dimmed
@@tracer073 don't understand what you are saying? The A80J is not bright enough?
@@gosman949 that’s exactly what I’m saying, it is not bright, vivid mode is the only mode I can stand watching it on
@@tracer073 bright mode is not for aficionados! You must be in a bright room. Luckily I installed solar powered shutters on my skylights! Just knowing that someday I would be getting a OLED. No fancy theater room for me. Just fancy shutters! Tax deductible because they are solar!
@@gosman949 it’s in my bedroom, with two small windows, mi bedroom is not bright
I just bought this TV today! Looking forward to Sunday Ticket Football friends and fam. Go Rams!
there were 2, so "this" doesn't really help
Went with the 77 A80j over the 65 A90j. For me it was a no brainer, it saved me a little money, gave me a bigger screen, and the a80j itself was bound to be a huge upgrade over my old LG C7.
what is your viewing distance on the 77?
I was having the same debate but decided on the 77” A80J as well. Would you happen to know how the tv does with live sports from a cable source? I may pull the trigger before football season.
@@dcdread5983 I've been watching the NBA finals, at first from Directv then ATT TV. Both honestly look really good, once I adjusted the motion settings everything was clear and looks great. Can't wait for football season
@@rawrj Sounds good...I appreciate your honest feedback bro! Yes, I’m so pumped for the football season!
does the 77 have the adjustable legs that can be brought further in to go on a smaller stand?
Thanks for video, it is really helping, my question is about calibration, do i need to consider calibration for the A90J and A80J, or just out of the box is fine enough
I've been swaying between both sony tv's and keep changing my mind I will only be getting a 55" t.v either way.
Was wondering you opinion! Is the better buy the A90J 65”or the A80J 77” if the prices are the same for the two TV’s? My eye to picture distance can be between 8 ft to 11ft! Seeing the two sets about same price online not big box stores! Would like your opinion if possible as I am ready to buy! Ty
“
In the same boat!
I would love to see DT do more smaller screen size TV reviews. I need to replace a terrible 49” TCL Roku TV and there are so few small screen (less than 55”) reviews out there. I know big screens are super popular but smaller sizes are much harder to find quality information and reviews on.
Most of it trickles down within the models themselves.
Hey Caleb, the choice is between a calibrated 83” LG C1 and the 77” Sony A80J. Where do you come down?
Loving my A90J!
stating the screen size helps!
@@jrnumex9286 It’s a 55 inch in my bedroom I have a 77 LG C9 in the living room.
I tried the U8G and did not like its motion and processing. It also had a bad HDMI port so I returned it for the A80J and it just amazing. Also my A80J is really bright. To be honest my perceived brightness is not really different than the U8G and it makes cable and all SDR look almost native. It is amazing,
