    ►VIDEO DESCRIPTION◄
    I noticed my front and rear tires nearing the end of their tread life, and decided to shoot my thoughts on my "new-ish" Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R tires. I wanted to get my experience out there to help clear up any discussions bouncing around regarding these tires.
    My story starts when it came time to replace my beloved Bridgestone Potenza RE-11's in the front of my Nismo 370Z. Unfortunately, Bridgestone had stopped production on the RE-11's and was now pushing their RE-71R's as a formidable replacement with improved handling and capabilities all the way around. On the fly, I decided to give them an expensive try... and the video here explains my experience as a performance minded, but still daily driven car enthusiast.
    This is not a video about exact lap time improvements from model to model of tires. Its an examination of my experiences with daily driving with these tires, and how the transition from other performance tires compare to the RE-71R. There was more than meets the eye, and sometimes these details just don't make their way online for others to see.
    Want to purchase these tires for your daily driven performance vehicle? Watch this video first!
    Thanks,
    Justin

    Thanks for the interesting and informative review. I own a 2019 370z sport coupe with about 18K miles on it and I was seriously considering the RE71s when it came time to replace the OEM Bridgestone Potenza S007 that were on the car. Those tires were great, in all respects and I wanted to replace them with the same when they ran down but the problem was that it would have been very expensive, ~$1, 400 for the tires alone. I looked for alternatives and used Tire Rack's information to compile a spreadsheet of all the aspects of tire performance and characteristics that mattered to me, a list of about 22 tires. I wound up going with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, a tire that is not cheap but on a cents per mile, based on anticipated tread wear rate, that would make it competitive with other performance tires. Here is my comparison of the Michelins to the OEM Bridgestones:
    • the Michelins are quieter and less harsh riding than the Bridgestones
    • the wet performance of both tires is excellent
    • the Michelins will wear longer than the Bridgestones
    • the Bridgestones have stiffer sidewalls and seem to be better damped to respond to bumps and road irregularities
    • related to the above, the Bridgestones seem to be more responsive and accurate in their steering response.
    Because of the last two qualities, I'm not going to go back to the Michelins when these wear out. I will probably go back to the OEM Potenzas. I think the PS4S is a tire desired more along the lines of a high-performance touring or GT type for something like A BMW.

      Thanks for your comment and support Anthony. Yes. Agreed! I was researching on the fly at the tire shop and found very mixed reviews (mostly very good), but wet performance was super ambiguous. I wanted to post this video especially for those consider dailying on these tires in places it rains a lot (like Houston, Texas for instance). They are sold in most tire shops as if they would be fine for these conditions.
      This video isnt a dig on the tire, its just perspective from someone that wants to cut through the Bridgestone marketing, tire sponsorship testimonials, and initial tire review BS. This is a reflection of a long term review, and unbiased as they come to make sure people are getting exactly what they paid for and the most out of their performance vehicles.

      Thanks for your comment Steve! I really was TORN on the move to the Bridgestone RE-71R's. I found mixed reviews on wear and ESPECIALLY mixed reviews on wet performance. I can speak from direct experience that even with light to moderate wear on the RE-71R's over a short time, the wet performance curve dropped rather steep after a short amount of use (which is unfortunate). I have had a couple of "oh s***" moments in moderate rain conditions (not when brand new... but after a little bit of time after purchase).
      I decided to do this video, because even though this tire is an absolutely FANTASTIC dry autocross/weekend tire, its still sold by most national tire supply stores as an everyday performance tire (which it is not in my opinion and experience). I hope people find my video here to at least consider this before buying.

    Interesting Review. I ran these for a while as daily tires when they came out in 2015. I didn't have any problems with wet traction until they were about half worn. I did find that they are at their best when closer to new with dry and wet performance. After some heat cycles from the track days, they're still good, but at max you'll get RE-11 performance. I agree with your overall assessment though: These aren't meant for daily use. I have the Conti Extreme Contact Sport on my "street" wheels for my Z and they have been excellent. Safe wet weather handling, decent with road noise and drivability. They also don't break the bank. I have a set on my Daily WRX and happened to track on them just for fun, they hold up for about 3 laps but get tired after that haha. Still good fun.

      @@NVSTRZ34 I should clarify they're (continentals) only good for the first three laps per session, but I would recommend them to a novice to intermediate track driver. Something like a RE 71R shouldn't be used until advanced level in my opinion. The tire has so much grip, it can mask bad habits. Also, when they fall off the cliff during a session (overheating), they'll change the car balance to very loose.
      the 71s don't work on the track in the cold though. I did a day in 40F and was basically power sliding out of corners.

    No way on Pilot Sport 4S. I've had the older super sport and I have run the 4S. Michelins have soft sidewalls. For the lack of a better word, I will call it steering lag (think of turbo lag). Yes, the RE71R wears quickly. So do Falken RT615K+. Any tire that is going to grip well is going to wear quickly. Is the RE71R a bit much for a daily...maybe.

      Thank you for your question and support! I am sorry that 5 days has passed. I don't always get updates in the RUclips app that comments have posted. Here are my thoughts. The PS4S are better all around tires. Period. There are gives and takes, but there is a reason many many top tier supercars, etc. run them. They are absolutely amazing tires all the way around. From what I have read, the RE-71R's have better dry performance (in general), but for a daily driver and weekend racer, the PS4S are an AMAZING pick and I am a believer now seeing/feeling them in person (different car than my own).
      I haven't tested the PS4S in the rain (which I call out in my video here is a weakness of the RE-71R here - as well as the tire life - can't stress this enough), but I hear/see there is no all around BETTER substitute.
      When I pick up a set here soon, I will for sure double back on my thoughts side by side, but I have absolutely 0 hesitations picking up a set for my car for daily driving and spirited driving sessions.
      Let me know if there are any other questions or comments.

    I have a 370Z Nismo. I run the Continental Extreme Contact sport. Mostly because of the cost of Michelin options or Pirelli P Zero. Like the Potenza RE71R in your review- every single bump in the road seems to be felt. Maybe not buying such a thin sidewall would help. Thanks for your comment and support Richard! I personally like the meatier tire look on my Z so I run large'ish tires. Actually, I will be dialing it back a little bit on the next set because I definitely noticed acceleration was impacted because of the extra tire mass, and its hard to find the same tire sizes in the tires I like without breaking the bank now (but still retaining a lot of the performance). Let me know if there are any other questions or comments.
      Thanks,
      Justin

      NVSTRZ34 so about 7k until they’re good but should be replaced for wet conditions.. thanks for the quick reply.

      @@ogcameo37 They actually started losing some rain conditions handling a little bit before, but I think your comment is still directionally right. It was a progressive loss of feeling that accelerated over time (from around 5k till now). Now, I take it easy in the rain. Hope this helps 🤘

    Don’t put track tyres on a daily driver

    • @NVSTRZ34
      @NVSTRZ34  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for your comment and support Ryan. Agreed. However, these tires are not usually sold as a strictly track rated tire. They are sold as streetable & performance capable all season tires for sports car enthusiasts by most big name tire shops out there. This video is meant to educate others about falling into this trap by inadvertently purchasing a tire that is not necessarily a good street driven tire long term. Other than that, they are a fantastic choice if you are looking for a dry performance tire 100%. Thank you again for your comment.
      Take care,

      I've heard good things about the Firehawk Indy 500's as a decent performance tire.

    • @cammando117
      @cammando117 4 года назад +1

      I went from R-71R for firehawks. They are not in the same league. The firehawks don't grab, hook or launch as good as the 71R's that being said I would rather buy the firehawks 1 instead of the 71R's twice

    • @anthonylusano6906
      @anthonylusano6906 4 года назад +1

      Correct - the Firehawk is not the RE-71R. The RE-71R is much stickier than the Indy 500. I have owned both. The Indy 500 is impressive for a 340 treadwear tire and the price.

    I run the re71r on my supercharged grand prix and ended up getting 30k out of them with some very harsh burnouts. Definantly a very tourque friendly tire.

    Unfortunately you are blaming the tyres for your poor suspension setup. Stiff suspension should be reserved for the track. When you are on the street you need softer suspension or you are going to keep wrecking high quality tyres on shitty roads and cause unnecessary wear on components i.e. engine mounts. Noisy ride is because you have stiff springs that dont allow your struts to do their job. Looks like you run ebay coilovers or something of equivalent quality. I can tell by the way your car is on jackstands and you have no downward movement. That type of suspension setup is garbage for street use cause of the shitty roads. You dont sound like a hard street driver more like a old man driver with the occasional spastic moment when you open your car up. Change your suspension and you will make a huge improvement to your tyres and ride quality. Thats why other people dont have the same problem as you using the same tyres lol. I run different setups for street. I learnt this a long time ago in the 90s. Forgot to mention, the RE11 might be gone but the RE003 is there.

      Respectfully, you're off on your judgement and general commentary. The coilover suspension is Fortune Autos on Swift springs (farrrrr from the eBay brands you have mentioned). They are also not set super stiff at all. Additionally, aggressive treads and compounds in the tires add to the road noise way more than suspension.

      Thanks for your comment. Yep. Slightly worn RE-71R's in the rain are no fun in my opinion. Better options out there for everyday drivers. Although, the tire kicks butt in dry conditions.
