"We threw away our chances" - Ex-UFO legend Pete Way chats at The Rock & Blues Custom Show

  • I talked with rock legend Pete Way before his set at (a noisy!) Rock & Blues Custom Show. We spoke about fronting his own band, being a hero for the likes of Steve Harris and Nikki Sixx, and why UFO should have been even more successful than they were. (Apologies for the background noise - the stages around us were rocking!)

    The fact that Pete Way is even alive today is a miracle. He is right about UFO throwing away their chances. Phil Mogg & Michael Schenker should've learned to get along better. That being said, their music was soooo great & its weird how some bands make it huge with not so great songs & other bands don't make it big with great songs.

    • @michaelehrhart9413
      @michaelehrhart9413 5 лет назад +11

      I think an unbiased investigation would reveal that Michael Schenker is a headcase. A genius in the 70s and still a very good guitarist today, he has done nothing but be negative towards Phil and Rudolph for years. If he would just shut up and play guitar.

    • @walterevans2118
      @walterevans2118 4 года назад +6

      Unbiased ?.....Come on....Michael is a sensitive artist & a purist musician who was always in it for love of creating with his guitar...Never the fame or money... Perhaps he felt aggrieved with his brother for re-writing his contributions out of history & Phil, well, he shouldn't have punched Michael ....But I wouldn't call him stuff like that.

      Your right. Better management as well would have helped. But it baffles me why UFO weren’t absolutely massive. Great songs, great albums, some great guitar playing. Pete Way would survive a nuclear blast!

      The thing is - UFO was huge - back in the 70's - and have endured virtually non-stop since then. The legacy is solid. I think the chemistry that made the late 70's UFO so good is what also doomed them. But I very much have enjoyed every incantation of UFO - especially the Chapman years - but I even like Misdemeanor and High Stakes and Dangerous men. I have to admit liking UFO better with Pete on Bass - the current guy is ok but he lacks charisma in my opinion.
      My heart is broken that Pete Way, Paul Chapman and Paul Raymond all passed away in 16 months - but I'm very happy that they all played a large role in shaping UFO's legacy. While what could have been may have been better than what was - what was/is has been pretty effing good. We all have our memories of concerts but the good thing is there are lots of audio and video out there to enjoy forever - until our time is up - so enjoy what you love while you can. RIP Mr. Way - you are my favorite musician ever and have given me countless hours of enjoyment. You are definately missed.

    Michael Schenker couldn't have pulled the rug out from under UFO's feet at a time any worse than he did. Late 70's-early 80's - The New Wave of British (and European) Heavy Metal was a HUGE scene just happening. It was exciting and loud and crazy. Lots of awesome bands showed-up for the very first time, and already established ones like UFO were LITERALLY on the verge of complete super-stardom if Schenker had stayed with them. Talk about choosing the WRONG proverbial fork-in-the-road as far as the outcome in the timeline of history. "No Place To Run" would've been a completely different album and even bigger than Scorpions "Lovedrive", "Animal Magnetism" and Judas Priests "British Steel" , Leppard's "On Through The Night" and Maiden's "Killers".

    • @ChicagoBeaver
      @ChicagoBeaver 2 года назад +3

      I think you have some good points there, especially about 'No Place to Run." I bought that album when it came out and since there was no internet or anywhere to get real time news of the rock world, I had no idea what happened to Michael. It wasn't til decades later that I found out how destructive Michael was and how bad he abused drugs (mainly coke). I think if he would have stayed with UFO, he would have probably died bcz of his destructive lifestyle. After "Strangers in the Night," you are correct, they could have become a supergroup but instead UFO went into a collapse. I don't know the exact story but it was sad to hear about Pete passing away.

    • @adamwarlock3530
      @adamwarlock3530 2 года назад +2

      I agree. I remember how disappointed I was with No Place to Run. I may have listened to the whole LP from beginning to end only once, when I got it. I knew Schenker wasnt in UFO before then though. I lived in chicago and Rock Radio station had announced it and broadcast a concert featuring Paul Chapman. Had Schenker stuck with UFO, they wouldve been at the top of the charts, that's for sure.

    • @lindalee1247
      @lindalee1247 Год назад +1

      Michael is totally to blame for UFO not being bigger. Unprofessional at every turn while blaming his behavior on everything and everyone else. They all lost out-Michael and the band were no ones without each other IMO.

      @@lindalee1247 Communications had a lot to do with it, I'm sure. In the beginning, he didnt even know a lick of English. He probably wasnt as close to the other guys as he shouldve been. Plus, Phil even said himself he bullied Michael. Bad choice, considering the band owed most (if not, all) of their success to Michael.

      No he wasn't....Michael was a sensitive artist which sometimes caused problems in a band environment but I think PETE recognised this & always cut Michael some slack for it.....Pete was a GOOD guy in that respect. A peacemaker who tried to keep things together.

    • @walterevans2118
      @walterevans2118 4 года назад +7

      Another thing about Pete is that from an early stage in UFO he recognised Michael's genius & worked really well with him as a fellow music writer...The stuff they co-wrote was timeless QUALITY rock which still moves people....The live stuff they did as a unit around Strangers in the Night was just FANTASTIC...Pete & Andy Parker would just lock in together as this unstoppable pulsating movement rhythm section giving Michael a blank canvas on which to improvise his emotional/melodic solo genius...& I LOVE the footage of Michael & Pete going toe to toe and you can see them almost reading each other like ESP when the improvised stuff changes direction & segues off into new territory....Sends shivers up my spine seeing & hearing that stuff in Rock Bottom.

    With 2/5 of the best lineup of UFO dead it seems so sad that this band never did achieve the kind of success they deserved. But I wouldn't blame Pete or Phil for that. Nope, it was flaky Schenker and his attitude and unprofessionalism that caused UFO to not reach that type of success. People brag on Chapman, but if he was THAT good UFO wouldn't have suffered so miserably when Schenker left. People didn't want to see Chapman and a lot of people just weren't interested in UFO after Michael left. Even when they got together in the 90's they couldn't keep it together because of him. As for Pete, I'm surprised he lived as long as he did when you consider what he did to himself in the mid 90's and early 00's with the heroin and other drugs.

    • @colonelhogan1827
      @colonelhogan1827 11 месяцев назад

      Well, how far do you think they wouldve gotten with Mick Bolton? Michael is who made that band any good. Phil bullying him is what ruined it. After 5 years, you'd think they would know what buttons not to press. I'm sure Michael was no angel. But, he did earn some of the privileges he wanted. Had they been more respectful to him (Phil in particular), things couldve turned out better.
