Apple recently announced their new iPhone lineup and the devices are ruffling some feathers, but not for the reasons you might think. The issue many people have is with the device’s names. Which are iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. So, why are people upset about this naming scheme? Well, they believe there’s no reason to call the iPhone a “pro” product. And that by doing so, Apple is watering down the word pro since the iPhone is clearly a consumer-level product. But I take issue with this argument, and in this video I’m going to explain exactly why.

The problem with the name "Air" is that literally all their macbooks are thin and light enough to be called "air". The MacBook Air is heavier and thicker than the 12 inch macbook, making the name "Air" useless and redundant. Even the MacBook Pro is thin and light enough to be called the MacBook Air.

Honestly, this could be a thing though. HD Audio isn't supported (as far as I know) on iPhone, so an iPod Pro could serve as a dedicated device for this, similar to how Sony is selling devices meant just for it. Although, that'd be an incredibly hard thing to market

Audio engineers actually have to listen to music “professionally”. They need audio players that can play FLAC files, (lossless compression audio format) and have whole bunch of built in audio hardware that iPods never had (high quality DAQ, different size headphone jacks, etc). Look up the “FiiO M15” music player. That is a “pro” audio listening device.

10 minutes?? Let me summarize. People didn't bother to still look poor after spending 700$ on a so-called budget phone, so they made the budget model like it is the main one now and upgraded the name of the old line, to make it seem rational getting more expensive later. As simple as that.

The 2018 iphone lineup was also extremely cluttered, iPhone XR, iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max etc. I still don't like the "Pro" suffix for an almost entirely consumer product, however Ali is 100% correct that they added the Pro moniker to the successor of what started out as the original iPhone product and kept the to calling cheap budget phone as just the basic "iPhone" to not devalue the brand, but to also indicate that the Pro model is the superior product. As a consumer it seems silly to me to call a product that 99% of buyers will use to take pictures of their cat with and scroll social media a Pro device, yeah I get it it's got the best hardware and COULD be used for actual video editing and such, but it is and always fundamentally will be a consumer grade product. As much as I don't like the naming nomenclature I 100% thinks its a brilliant way to market it and it probably convinces some extra goof balls to buy the "pro" model because they believe if their instagram photo of their starbucks latte has higher image fidelity then they might get hired by BuzzFeed or get a call back from the modeling agency.

The thing that annoyed me with the iPhone 11 was they 'normalised' their lower spec phone at the higher price. Allowing them to charge more for the Pros. Effectively duping most people to not release the 'normal' line of iPhone was the Pro line.

If a product offers extra features specifically for people using it in their PROfessions, then it's pro.
I love iPhones, but the name is but the name is just Apple needing to justify charging over $1000 for a phone.
To summarize the entire video if you don’t have time: they needed to get rid of the budget suffix “R” because iPhone XR sounded like a budget phone. So by having just the name iPhone 11 (which is the new “R” basically) and the suffix “Pro” they can differentiate the standard offering from the premium offering. This way we have “the new shiny iPhone” that is good enough and “the new shiny extra iPhone” if you really just need that bit more. Rather than last year’s naming scheme the iPhone XR (we want more people to feel included but it sounds budget so they might think it isn’t as good even though it basically has the same processor and other differences you won’t notice) and then the ‘proper’ iPhone XS, which is the ‘normal’ new iPhone. So after watching this video - thank you to the creator - I now know that the name Pro was used to clean up the product naming system and more easily make a purchase decision, and also feel better. I feel it also respects the power of the iphones more. By removing the “R” name which has a ‘budget, cheap option’ ring to it, people can feel their phone is powerful enough and up to date, which really it is . I mean even the iPhone SE from years ago is good enough, especially with the speed bump from iOS 13.

iPhone 11 Pro is actually a downgrade. No 3D Touch, the A13 is just as fast or even slower than the A13 and it overheats. There are only 2 improvements: the camera and the battery life.

The only problem I have with the naming of the 2019 iPhones is the “Max” suffix on the bigger model. It’s just unnecessary and it sounds dumb. Dropping the “Max” suffix would bring the naming in to greater congruence with the naming scheme of their other products.
Because there’s two different sizes of MacBook Pros but they don’t’ have an extra suffix to delineate between the two sizes. Same thing with the two different sizes of iPad Pros. If you need to refer to a specific model you would just cite it’s screen size. “I bought 12.9 inch iPad Pro” or just, “I bought the bigger one”
Also...it just sounds stupid. So dropping it would alleviate the stupid as well.

They could've used the "s" suffix instead, since they could've done wat they did with the iPhone 8 and not have a secondary improvement the following with the "s" name
the S suffixes are for phones that are just an improvement over the previous phone (e.g. the iPhone 7 to iPhone 8), with mostly the same design and minor changes

The original 13" MBP was a tank. I used it onstage, for years. I ran GuitarRig and several other pieces of software and it handled it all, without latency. I had an all-digital rig. People were surprised when we showed up with nothing but laptops and a small rack. Good times.

I'm an IT consultant. I have done all kinds of IT things from C/C++/Perl development up to private cloud and Linux administration today. The laptop my company gives me to do all my PRO work has always been less then I want, but I made due with what I had. Currently our "standard" corporate laptop is an HP elitebook 840 G5 with Windows 10 Entperise, Intel core i5-8350U, 8GB 2400MHz ram, Full HD 14" display and 128GB SSD storage -- which incidentally is the FIRST time they've given us a laptop that uses SSD. If they doubled the memory and storage, I'd be happy. I use it for work, therefore it must be called a "Pro" laptop I guess.
And it sucks. Even Apple makes laptops more powerful and capable than this. Granted they'd charge twice the price, but Apple does make 'em. My point? That "Pro" is just a marketing buzz word. Yes, "Pro" did used to me a faster, more capable machine able to handle demanding compute and networking tasks. But that's not really true anymore. Today it's just marketing jargon.

I would say this helped simplify the lineup and shifted focus to the XR (or now the 11). Sure, the 11 Pro is smaller, but using the word "pro", consumers now know that this is a more advanced products and that what they're looking for is the 11. The word pro is there merely to differentiate between regular and high end, nothing more.

I think the problem with naming the new high end iPhones with pro is they didn’t add any new pro features to signifying it taking that next step. The pro name only is added because they wanted to make the cheaper iPhone the regular one not just the cheaper which is great but they could’ve at least made it easier to use the iPhone as a professional device with something like usb c. I think it would been better to do this naming with the IPhone X with its new redesign
People have too much time on their hands. If Apple calls their next phone the iPhone SuperMax Protastic Elite, then its their right to do so. I really think the 2020 phones, which is rumoured to be the next redesign will be the real PRO phone,. USBC, Promotion, No Notch, Inductive Charging. I like the new names. It’s much better then IPhone XR, and iPhone XS Max. It’s definitely a PRO camera array on the iPhone 11 Pros.

This is exactly correct! As a premed student I need to access programs with complex molecules in organic chemistry and biochemistry, programs that are impossible to run on my iPad Air. Also, the majority of doctors I work with use iPhones to access patient history, X-rays and even MRIs. Aside from that, the fact that I can edit 4K video on my iPhone but not my first 2012 MacBook Pro says a lot about the iPhones 11 PROs capabilities.
Although i am watching this video in may 2022, i must admit that i was very informative. Overall all the videos that i have watched on your channel Greg, are very informative and as i am a huge apple fan, i have learned more about apple and understood things i couldn’t explain myself. i always used to consider “Pro” in the iPhone as “Better Than the Normal Model”
Given the impact the iPad Pro has had on many artists, I'd say they've more than earned the right to the "Pro" qualifier. What disappointed me about the iPhone "Pro" was no Pencil support. That's a missed opportunity; it would be the greatest reporter notebook out there. I mean, it's a screen big enough for note-taking, but no Pencil support.

How about this: remember back before smartphone cameras were a thing you’d either hire a camera person or have to carry a camera system AND handle all the editing YOURSELF on a computer? Now, any flagship smartphone can handle all this in a form factor that fits in your pocket. You can basically do some “pro” stuff in the palm of your hands.

for me the "Pro" is just an extra name that indicates that it is a better version of the basic model, not an adjective indicating that it is the "pro version" for professionals, it's just a nice name that Apple put to sell more. So much so that several other companies name the slightly better versions of their products Pro
