Apple TV 4K HDR/ Dolby Vision issue fix; turn off “Match Dynamic Range”

  • My setup is Apple TV 4k 2017 1st Generation and LG CX TV.
    I am unsure if the given issue applies to 2nd and 3rd gen Apple TV 4k, but worth the try.
    I am sure "Match Dynamic Range" did work at some point, but it isn't currently working for me, and need to be turned off.

    All you are doing is telling the TV to display everything in Dolby Vision or HDR when you turn off Match Dynamic Range and change the format to 4K HDR or 4K Dolby Vision.

    I have the latest Apple TV & I don’t have that problem only thing I have is the blacking out for a few seconds on the match dynamic range… Dolby vision is darker so bright lights in videos don’t cause glares and to much brightness where light blocks out some of the scene 😂

    You have to put your format to 4k SDR and match dynamic range to on because if your tv is always on DV even on the main menu when you start a DV movie your apple tv have nothing to match so it show you hdr instead of DV.

      Thanks. But I have tried on my setup. If I am in 4K SDR mode, I am not able to enter Dolby vision at all with or without match dynamic range on.

      @@evanthehulk You're saying that when you have it on 4kSDR and Match Dynamic Range On and Match Frame Rate On, your tv doesn't enables DV ? Because that's the way you should have the settings on TV just like OP said..

    • @evanthehulk
      @evanthehulk  Год назад +1

      @@Randii225 correct. On my setup, I cannot enter Dolby vision with “4K SDR + match dynamic range on (match frame rate shouldn’t matter here but i have it on)”.
      I know the intention is that above is the supposed correct setting to be. But it is not working for me for my setup.

      @@evanthehulk That is very odd. I’ve hooked up 4K TVs on various TV brands with this settings and everything works normally. Strange 🤔

    I agree with your assessment. I have the 2022 ATV 4K and have the Format set to ‘4K SDR‘ and match dynamic range/ frame rate turned ‘On’. I noticed my Samsung screen was very dark watching scenes from ‘Silo’ on Apple TV+. Once I turned off the match dynamic range, it corrected the dark screen problem.

    If you turn off match content you’re not letting the Apple do it for you automatically

    • @evanthehulk
      @evanthehulk  Год назад

      Right, that should be the intent of match dynamic range setting. However, it is not letting the Dolby vision or HDR10 to show up properly with my setup. So if ppl saw the same HDR issue, I recommend disable match dynamic range and try.

    I have an Apple TV 4K 2021 and a Sony Bravia X95K mini led. And when I first set everything up Dolby Vision was working. Then about 2 weeks in it stopped giving me that as a picture option. So I bought a new HDMI thinking it was my current one. But now I turned off "match dynamic range" and I have Dolby Vision back for watching Amazon Prime and Netflix.
    Thank you for the help sir.

      Sam, thanks for the comment here, it helps the community. It is a good data to have, even with newer model 2021 Apple TV 4K and Sony X95K (2022 model), this issue is reproducible and can also be resolved via turning “match dynamic range” off.

      @@evanthehulk Also the same night, after I left my comment here on your video, I was watching Amazon Prime and all of a sudden. I got the spinning circle on my Apple TV. I thought I lost internet connect or the show was buffering. But no it was stranger than that. My Apple TV turned the "match dynamic range setting back on" and I lost my dolby vision picture setting and it went back to my back up custom picture setting. I backed out of the show I was watching, went to settings and turned "match dynamic range off" and got dolby vision back and continued watching my show. I just found it so strange that the Apple TV turned that setting back on that I had turned off. I didn't pay $2,000 for a top tier TV to not enjoy the benefits of Dolby Vision.

      The best way to ensure is to watch a known Dolby vision content, some TV when watching Dolby vision content will pop up Dolby vision on the top right corner.
      Also if you go into picture setting under television’s setting (where you see standard mode, movie mode and etc), sometimes you can tell if it is Dolby vision there.
      Sorry cannot give a more precise way to ensure, as every tv is different.

    Hi, can you use apple tv 4k without having any other apple devices like iphone, ipad etc. I have Sony TV with Dolby vision and Denon Klipsch home theatre for Dolby Atmos, and was thinking of buying Apple TV 4K for best TV streaming experience, but I do not have/own any apple devices, so just want to know if i will be able to setup and use apple tv 4k for streaming with full features, UHD Dolby vision & Atmos.

      Hi, Yes you can use Apple TV without owning any other Apple device like iPhone, iPad, or mac/macbook. You would need to create an Apple account/ iTunes account so that you can download app from Apple TV.

I do have Apple ID, created when i downloaded apple tv app on Android TV, had to go through the hassle of installing itunes on windows laptop. I have one last question, I currently enjoy Dolby vision and Atmos via xbox one x, so is it ok to use the same xbox hdmi cable for apple tv 4k device, or do I need to buy any other hdmi cable specific for apple tv 4k for full Dolby experience.

    Colours on my Apple tv look washed up and a little out of focus. But they good when viewing through normal tv. What could be causing this? My tv is a 2017 LG UHD 4K. Thanks.

    • @evanthehulk
      @evanthehulk  Год назад

      Here are something you can try.
      1. Use you LG TV build in app, watching same content. Let’s says Netflix, does it look different to Apple TV? Assuming so then.
      2. See if you can change a hdmi cable, if you are buying a new one. Make sure it is hdmi 2.1.
      3. On the LG remote, see if there is “…” or info, and see if you can tell you are in 4K mode/ UHD.
      4. *Very important* on your LG TV setting Picture/ additional settings/ hdmi ultra HD deep color, make sure you turn it on for all HDMI ports
      5. Your 2017 LG TV should support Dolby vision and HDR(HDR10), but I would go into Apple TV setting video & audio/ format and change from 4k Dolby vision, 4K HDR, 4K SDR, 1080p Dolby vision, 1080p HDR, 1080p SDR to see when you see wash out image and when you don’t to narrow down the issue. I will also try different HDMi ports to see if it make a difference.

      SDR for what? What’s the point of having an OLED if you watch in sdr?

      I think this comment is legit. Apple TV setting to 4K SDR is affective for the apple TV home screen, but when playing HDR/ HDR10+/ dolby vision video content, it does still switch to HDR/ HDR10+/ dolby vision. From my research most ppl does suggest 4K SDR. But myself can't tell a difference really.
