The game stopped making sound so I'm pretty sure they cut the audio.

Edit: only made sound when the used their tongue or caught a fly, and sometimes it would make sound when something happened in the game like when the time of day changed

Frogs and Flies is the greatest competitive game of all time. Though it seems they never flipped the difficulty switch to find the best mode where you have total control over your jump.

I always come back to this episode because Frogs & Flies was one of the very first games I ever played as a kid on the Atari. Used to play vs my mom and we'd get pretty competitive.
Years later. This is the first game I remember. I was afraid they were going to tear it to shreds. If they turned the difficulty harder they could swim lol.

I wish I could go back in time and see little Danny (back when he looked like Finn Wolfhard) hanging out at the local video arcade, absolutely crushing it at Crystal Castles, Centipede, and Space Invaders. :)
the special candle on the hannukiah is the shamash, which is used to light the other candles. the hannukiah is the word for the menorah used for hannukah, as there are also the original menorahs, which are just used for general lighting and only have 7 candles, while the hannukiah is used for the hannukah ceremony and has 8 candles symbolizing the 8 days of hannukah, plus the shamash.
Not to teach Dan about his Jew-eyness, but the one that's for lighting is the "shamash," and a Hanukkiah is the 9-branched version of the Menorah that is specifically brought out for Hanukkah. The 7-branched one is used year-round, and (from my understanding) has one lit each day until Shabbat, where the center one is lit.
Frogs and flies was one of my absolute favorites when I was a kid. This brings back memories of my sister and I playing. I'm so glad to see Dan and Arin enjoyed it!

I remember playing Frogs and Flies as a kid fairly often when visiting my grandparents. But I never knew about the prequel to that game. It's impressive how well some Atari games hold up after all these years, too. Seeing how much fun you can still have with them when playing with others.
I'd love a compilation of all the times Dan quotes, "you're arrogance". It must have happened on dozens of grump episodes

Frogs and Flies was my jam back in the Atari 2600 days. You should try the game mode where the frogs' jump paths aren't as set. You can fall in the water, if I remember correctly. It's fun!
Dan saying "MUNCH" is my favorite thing ever
If you switch frogs and flies to mode B, you can control the height and distance of your jumps instead of being locked on a set jump path. Makes it even more fun

Frogs and flies was my favorite game on Atari. However, I remember that there was a way to choose how far you jump. Maybe that's not possible without the giant joystick.

Fun Fact. Frog Pond was never released. It never left the prototype stage and was abandoned. I actually have a repro of the game in the box with manual that I got as a prize long ago.
Use game select on Frogs and Flies. It takes the frogs off the rail they are on and you can do custom jumps and even fall in the water.

Menorah just means lamp in Hebrew and is typically used with 8 branches, the hanukkiah is 9 branches and used specifically during Hanukkah. Sometimes the 9th (shamash) branch is removable. The more you know...

This is the true beauty of Atari 2600. The simple, one-on-one competition games. There were a ton of them, too. They may be primitive. But, simple can be fun with friends. Makes me wonder if they'll keep going with these. Maybe a video on Freeway, which is basically the fore father to a modern arcade game named Crossy Road.
And, highly agree. These simple games could be modernized for smart phones as short distractions at a super cheap price. Say, twenty-nine cents. Probably make millions.
I have an Atari portable classic and Frog Pond is my favorite. Well I actually like them all but I gotta tell you Frogs and Flies is fun and hard.

It's a lot of fun seeing you guys play older games like this. Have you considered playing any more C64 games? You might be interested in Forbidden Forest - one of the first "horror" games to exist, around 36 years old, yet it contained a rudimentary day/night cycle. It was scary to my 6yr old self 😂
I think you'd also enjoy some of the games made by Thalamus (like Retrograde). There's also Scarabaeus (absolutely indecipherable puzzle exploration game).
